My very first interaction with alcohol happened on the same day I realized that my father wasn’t perfect.

I was seven. It was a Saturday in the Summer and we had been invited to a family friend’s house for a barbeque. The whole family was going: myself, my brothers and my parents. Now, we lived in a neighbourhood where everyone knew everyone: you couldn’t walk down the street without having to stop and chat to twelve of your neighbours, all asking the same mundane questions – ‘How’s school?’, ‘My, you’re getting big! How tall are you now?’, ‘How’s your mum?’, ‘Did you enjoy the casserole I sent you on Tuesday?’ But once a month or so, we all liked to get together and throw garden parties: a chance for the kids to run around and play outside, whilst the adults sit on lounge-chairs, sipping Chardonnay.

My relationship with alcohol properly kicked off in my teens. I started going to parties, having a few beers, you know – the usual teenage experience. Back then, I didn’t know my limits: I would drink and drink and drink until I passed out, only to be awoken the next day to stories and photographs of my drunken antics the night before. It became so bad that the mere thought of a hangover the next day was enough to stop me from going out with my friends. I experimented with different techniques to try and reduce my alcohol consumption (and reduce the likelihood of a hangover) whilst maximizing the amount of fun I was having.
So that’s why I wrote this book: I realise that there are many others out there in the same predicament that I was in. Are you fed up of hangovers, but still want to go out? Are you concerned that you might be drinking too much, and what kind of effect this is having on your body? I’ve compiled a list of tried-and-tested techniques and approaches that will help you cut down your alcohol consumption, without impeding on your social life.
