Art is excellent, though lacking a certain flair. I think the problem is too many long-shots, often hyper-detailed, and not enough closeups that convey emotion and character. That said, there are many well-composed panels of crowds, soldiers, and dinosaurs.
The writing is also good — clear, focused, fast-paced, mixing humor and action. My complaint is the same as with volume 1 — the setting isn’t that interesting. I hope and expect that the next volume, set beyond familiar shores, will provide greater opportunities for imagination.
The goal of this book is the acquisition of Fouquatou’s locks. One of two ingredients needed for the potion which will free the trolls from captivity. Only problem — the venerable sage is ashamedly bald.
Last volume, Arleston established a character whose power is growing hair. In the opening scene, the ill-tempered leader of the troll hunters barbecues her brother, so when the trolls dodge children and soldiers to kidnap her, hoping to make use of her abilities, she is happy to join them, both to get revenge on Halmsly (and the entire complicit establishment), as well as to experience adventure, her original motivation for joining the troll hunters to begin with.
SPOILER
The heroes, including a half-troll named Profy whom they met in the woods after killing his pet, head to the capitol of Eckmul, with Halmsly and the troll hunters, led by the sensitive nose of Nostrildamus, following their trail.
In town, Waha and Trolanne convince a local sage to hire the trolls as gardeners and persuade the guards to imprison the troll hunters, using wits rather than brawn this time.
On the day of the great festival the heroes launch their attack. They overcome the freed troll hunters, a giant insect, and a raging tempest, kidnap Fouquatou and steal a lock of his hair before dumping him in the sea, and depart for the distant volcano by boat.
But Fouquatou and Halmsly are unlikely to let them escape so easily. Arleston also sets up a further complication — a great alignment of the 3 moons that will affect gravity.
All the LOLs! Still following the tribulations or Waha and Teträm, now joined by Pröfy on their quest to get a hair sample from a bald venerable... Yup, doesn't get any better than that!!
