I'm so disappointed because I had high hopes for it but I just found myself getting progressively more irritated with each passing chapter. If you look through my past reviews, you'll find that I usually try to find at least something to like about each book... Well, this time, I failed.
Here are my notes as I wrote them - I really cannot be bothered to form coherent sentences at this point:
- Unnecessarily long section on the importance of sleep which reads as condescension. We get it, sleep is important for our health and wellbeing - that could have been said in one sentence.
- Really basic sleep hygiene tips, nothing we haven't heard before a thousand times over (avoid caffeine before bed, switch off your phone, sleep in a dark room... again, we get it).
- Importance of breathing?? This has to be a joke. It reads like filler content. Nothing of value. - Realised I had drifted off due to boredom.
- Complex topics such as "positive thinking" are terribly oversimplified. If it was that simple, we'd all be doing it.
- The part where they repeat "[something] takes time" like ten times in a row - I get that this was repetition for emphasis, but WOW was it irritating.
- "Practise being extroverted." I believe what you mean is practise socialising more. Extroversion and introversion are to do with how you recharge, not whether or not you socialise with others. You can't teach yourself to be an extrovert.
- On forgiveness: "it made you stronger" - that's a swing and a miss. People who have experienced trauma do not need to be "thankful" for said trauma OR forgive their abuser in order to heal. It's not that cut and dry.
- Learning chapter: PRODUCTIVITY AND CONSTANT UPSKILLING DOES NOT DEFINE HOW "INTERESTING" YOU ARE. THIS IS ABLEISM.
- "Do yoga" ... honestly, I lost it at this point because fudge* yoga and fudge* people who recommend it as a catch-all solution to life's problem.
I wanted to read this book because it sounded like it would include some useful advice on self-care and allowing yourself time to recharge. What it actually is, is a productivity manual.
Nothing much new here although a few tips that made me think differently. It isn’t from uk, although not sure what difference that really makes to next sentence. Will these books still stop aiming themselves at people who live in nice places with disposable income and lots of time. I’m aware I’m lucky that I do. However telling someone surrounded by children/ caring duties/ multiple jobs that an hour a day ( if you add up all the tips) to your day with things that may help but will then impact on your ( potentially lack of) sleep time ( also important). Just adds the guilt on, which is toxic as we are told. A walk in the park is free. Some places wouldn’t be safe to walk in or walk to, or not possible with people in tow. I guess my rant needs to stop as anger is toxic....Anyway, a harmless book, with good intentions written simply. I’ve decided to leave the how to books alone for a minute. Many just make me think - really? Amazed someone so busy with so much intelligence who can juggle so many things didn’t think of that themselves. I must be a little in minority as it got a few more stars from others.
