Kipp Kindle, Tobias Treachery and Cymphany Chan live in Huggabie Falls, the weirdest town on Earth, so weirdness is pretty normal for them. But when unbelievably scary things start to happen, even Kipp, Tobias and Cymphany have trouble believing what’s going on. Why is everyone running away from their worst fears and where did those fears suddenly appear from? How can a dinosaur that doesn’t even exist be about to chomp Cymphany in two? And is the evil Felonious Dark reformed like he says he is, or is he the one behind the unbelievably scary happenings?
With all the madcap humour and breakneck adventure of The Extremely Weird Thing that Happened in Huggabie Falls, this hilarious sequel will have young readers laughing out loud and asking for more.
I received this book via Netgalley in return for an honest review. This was a really fun middle grade story about a weird town and three kids that seem to find ways to save the day, regardless of what weird stuff is going on. I loved the humor of the author, and the asides he had within the story. Really fun. Reminded me a bit of Lemony Snicket stories.
Deel 1 was het grappigste boek dat ik ooit heb gelezen. Totdat ik dit las. Ik ga geen spoilers geven dus ik hou het kort: Deze reeks is geniaal, briljant, geweldig! Zo hilarisch!
Thanks to @netgalley and @text_publishing (with a little help from author Adam Cece and illustrator Andrew Weldon), for the digital ARC. All opinions are my own.
Welcome (back) to Huggabie Falls, where every street is Digmont Drive, vegetarian piranhas infest the lake, and the middle-school teacher keeps turning herself into a pencil sharpener. | When the Dinosaur Fearers Society club visits town and is promptly eaten in their porta-potties by a deux-ex-machina T-rex, fearless preteens Kipp Kindle, Tobias Treachery, and Cymphany Chan (yes, almost everyone in Huggabie Falls has delightfully campy alliterative names) understand it's time to save the city from destruction once again. Sure, Book #1's antagonist, Felonious Dark may be a reformed villain, but he *is* an identical triplet... | A top-hatted mad scientist has imprisoned the town's biggest wuss, phobiaphile Conrad Creeps inside a haunted ghost train ride. There, Top Hat and Felonious's brother (Felonious Dark Two; we don't meet third triplet Al I guess until Book #3) are extracting the anxiety from Conrad's brain to create arachnid fear-balls that creep out the entire town by manifesting their worst fears. Soon the Huggabie Falls residents are terrorized by diarrheal pigeons, flying pianos, and annoying beatnik poets. | It's up to Kipp, Tobias, and Cymphany to befriend their worst fears (invisibility, a homicidal Brussels sprout, and an unspeakably scary crayon monster) to set an example for the adults and lead the good guys to victory. | Loved: The long-suffering, cantankerous 4th wall-breaking narrator who strongly disapproves of (among other things) know-it-all readers and those who read the second book in a trilogy first. Oops! The good news is, UNBELIEVABLY SCARY THING can be a stand-alone, and is interesting and hilarious enough that I'm sold on the first book. Just as soon as I can snag a new bookshelf. | Give to: Fans of Lemony Snicket, Pseudonymous Bosch, and anybody who loves absurdist humor in kidlit.
Caveats: The narrator's sidebars may be tough for a kid with attention issues to stay on track.
THE UNBELIEVABLY SCARY THING THAT HAPPENED IN HUGGABIE FALLS will release Jan 31, 2019 in the UK and Feb 12, 2019 in the US from Text Publishing Company.
Dear the equally spectacular, devilishly handsome and stupendously modest author
First I would just like to say a big thank you for approving me to be able to have a pre-release book, because it is very rare that anyone gets to do this. I really liked how scarily hilarious you were being from your perspective as the narrator! And I am sure that this will somehow make its way into the last book of the trilogy. Was it on purpose that you made chapter 13 as chapter 14? And if so.... why? At the end of the book when you mentioned the Dark family I knew that Al would be the bad guy in the third book, well ...at least that’s what I predict. After seeing the cover of the third book at your launch I just can’t wait to get my hands on it! Over all it is not just my favourite book of the series so far, it’s my favourite book I have ever read. It’s so good, the scariness is the reason I dropped it in the bath. One thing though is if you wanted to make it even scarier you could simply include my brother. It’s still AMAZING so I’d rate it 101 out of 10!
What a wonderful book! Parents spend a lot of time and money trying to get their children to read. They just need to give them these books! I loved the stories but the real experts were the 7 and 8 year olds I read them with. They give them a 10+. A great series to get your kids reading and talking about the stories.
The way author started the book is marvellous. And those cartoons also engaging. This was definitely a great book and I’d recommend it to kids it was funny and bright and the way it was written was just great. It’s also a book that both boy or girls could read and love. A good engaging book for middle school kids . It’s funny and full of action — enough to appeal to a wide range of children. Many thanks to NetGalley and Text Publishing for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
"Awesome!" according to my grades three, two, and pre-schooler!
The second instalment in Adam Cece's hilarious middle-grade series takes us back to Huggabie Falls, where Kip, Tobias and Cymphany have to save the world's weirdest town from something unbelievably scary. Readers will love revisiting the amazing characters of Huggabie Falls, including Mrs Turgan, the teacher who is also a witch and prone to turning students into vegetables, and Felonious Dark the (now possibly reformed) evil henchmen.
This is a particularly good book to read aloud to kids, as the authorial asides are great fun and often slightly ridiculous, and had everyone giggling. I especially enjoyed reading my new favourite character, Brussels Sprout with a really bad Scottish accent.
Clever and engaging, this is a book that I would gladly share with young readers. It’s funny and full of action — enough to appeal to a wide range of children.

I would recommend this book for young fans of Lemony Snicket. The characters have some quirks, the storyline is comical and keeps the reader guessing. From an adult perspective, i found the rambling of the author distracting and I lost interest many times. I know it was intended as comedic, but as an adult I was not into it. This story might be good for young independent readers, or family reading a little bit at a time.
This was definitely a great book and I’d recommend it to kids it was funny and bright and the way it was written was just great. It’s also a book that both boy or girls could read and love. This is a part 2 and I’ve never read the first one which it was easy to jump in and not feel like I don’t know what’s going on and it definitely has made me want to read the first part. Also added bonus there will be a part 3 so that is exciting.

This is book 2 of the Huggabie Falls Trilogy. I did not read the first book before reading this one, however my reading was in no way affected. In book 2, the three friends, Tobias, Kipp and Cymphany are still trying to rescue their town. Scary things are happening again in their town and it's up to them to find out who is scaring the town's residents before everyone runs away.
When I began this book I was not sure of what to expect. These kinds of books can go either way for me. They could be boring and annoying or funny and interesting. This fell in the second category. For one, it was the perfect length for me. The writing was funny and and quirky in a good way. I just wish the author didn't make so many appearances in the book. It felt at times like he was a character in the book. That is how present he was.
All in all this was a very enjoyable book to read. As I write this, I've already read it twice and I may start it again once my long pending book list is finished.
Of veel verderop:
Well, I am off.. to finish reading this book and then the other books in this sure to be a romp of a trilogy (based on what I have read of this book so far). So you just have to wait on this ‘quick thoughts’ thing. Just kidding!
Here are my quick thoughts on this book. I first started reading this book a couple of years ago when I first saw it on Netgalley. Unfortunately, I was too late in starting to read it and it expired before I could finish. I recently picked it up again for I needed a dose of hilarity, and I am so glad I did. As the title says, this read is (so far) unbelievably scary (not really!), totally hilarious, quirky, and filled with fun characters as well as so many asides from the author making an appearance in his book (that might be distracting to some readers but adds to the quirkiness). Great for fans of Lemony Snicket.
Disclaimer: I got a digital review copy of this book from Netgalley originally and these are my honest opinions of the book. Please note that the review is based on a more recent reading of the book (library/personal copy)
I had to laugh every time the author questioned why someone would read this book without having read the first one. I'm one of those people he was questioning. Why would I read this book before the first? The book sounded interesting, and I didn't realize it was the second in a series until I was already reading it. Figured I might as well continue.
The good news, even though the author was confused, I'm ready to read the first book now and see how everything started.
This book had a ton of humor that I'm pretty sure I appreciated more as an adult than I would have as a child. The cast of characters in Huggabie Falls is all over the place, in a good way. It's like the opposite of those futuristic books where everyone is the same. I would rather have the variety. It helps keep things unpredictable.

Duly chastised by the author in the 1st chapter, I will look for the 1st book! It seems as though the book 2 can read pretty well as a stand alone, tho'. Middle grade kids, 4th , maybe 3rd grade and up will find this book a hoot! lots of fast paced action and lots of laugh! Love the shark in the bank vault! I bet kids will, too. I received a Kindle ARC from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
This book was so much fun! I needed it in my life right now, for sure! Being the mom of two kids, I can tell you they would love this book. Especially my son. There was adventure on every page. I am definitely going to have to take the author's advice and read book one. And I can't wait for book three!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this review copy.
I enjoyed the story and I really like the illustrations which complemented the story well. This is the second book in the Huggabie Falls trilogy and I’ll be looking forward to reading more of these books. I highly recommend to young readers. My son read this book during the Halloween season and said it was funny, not scary. He liked it but didn't love it. He said he would give the author another chance though.
