THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'The beautiful game has taught me a lot, but I’ve had quite a life outside of football too. This book is full of my best stories – kickabouts with jumpers for goalposts with Bobby Moore, mine and Sandra’s disastrous honeymoon to Torquay in a dodgy car and my funniest ‘Mr Pastry’ moments – as well as my thoughts on the important things in life. I’m finally sharing what I’ve learned on and off the from growing up poor in Poplar to the heights of the Premiership and even lying in a coffin with a load of rats on national television. It’s everything I know about true team spirit, hard work, tough times, why family are so important and why everyone deserves respect no matter whether they’re royal or sleeping rough – and, of course, the real joy of a jam roly-poly.'
Seems a decent fellow who has had an interesting life. Becomes a little repetitive and contradictory in his views as the book wears on but a fair enough stocking filler.....which is just what it was!
I was handed this book with the line,'Here you like football try this' so I did. It is unusual for me to read either biographies or autobiographies and so I was unaware that this was not the only book about Harry Redknapp but one of many, something that I didn't realise until I was looking for the book to do this review.
It may be because of this that it was a bit thin on the ground as far as stories/anecdotes are concerned and seems to make up for this lack of 'story-line' by repeating information. Mr Redknapp won 'I'm a celebrity' and told me enough times to ensure that I will never forget it, other things that I learnt by being told repeatedly include that he was born in Poplar, he was poor, he likes to help people, he likes a bet especially on the horses, he likes chatting with people. There are also things that he does not like and you get told that repeatedly as well.
There are one or two nuggets about real football that are not repeated ad infinitum (unlike bits about Bobby Moore) but overall this is not as much a book about football and Harry's part in it but more 'This is what I think by Harry'.
I've been wanting to read this book for ages and it didn't disappoint, I was so engrossed and could out the book down, I managed to read it in a couple hours.
It doesn't matter if you're a football fan or not, this is a great read, it tells you how he met his wife Sandra, how he got into football, what made him go into the jungle and how he coped with the experience.
Also how he felt when he ran over Sandra's ankle and how they have stayed happily married for so many years.
A light hearted read, that anyone will enjoy, as Arry is so down to earth and likeable, everyone will relate to him.
Former football manager won I'm A Celebrity..., hence this cash-in.
Harry's a diamond geezer from the East End. He's got a lot of time for people. He won I'm A Celebrity. He's from the East End. He's a diamond geezer. He'll always help people out. Did I mention he won I'm A Celebrity? Etc. Etc. And repeat.
Admittedly, Harry is quite an interesting fella and there is the odd good anecdote and observation, but really this does seem like it was thrown together quite quickly.
I really enjoyed this book… being a mum of 2 boys who both play and love football it was interesting to read about how it’s evolved over the years… especially as one of my lads plays for an academy and is just starting his journey!!
I could picture Harry talking as I read his stories and memories which I think is s sign of a good autobiography…. and it was full of funny and quirky moments which made me smile.
Easy reading to start me off on my 2022 Redding’s challenge ❤️📚
Fans of dear old Harry (being a Spurs fanatic, I firmly include myself among them) will not be disappointed with this, unsurprisingly you can expect plenty of anecdotes from his time in the game, his ruminations on modern life and experiences from his reality TV appearance which won him a new crop of admirers.
Another brilliant readable book by Harry Redknapp, the man is a legend so entertaining informative with anecdotes from his life in football management and the comparisons of the time he served in football to the way of present day footballers. A great book readable just like all the other Harry Redknapp books.
I expected this one to be less about football and more about Harry. I was wrong. Probably should have done my research first. I did enjoy reading the stories of what football was once like and seeing them as Harry remembered. I hoped for more of his out of football life, but with an ex football manager who spent over 30 years in the business football would be a main focus.
This was a nice easy read that covered all aspects of Harry’s life from playing to management and even winning the Jungle!
I enjoyed the fact that things weren’t in an order and he just dipped in and out of his life with different stories, particularly focusing on his playing career which was fun to learn about.
Easy reading. Lots of "things were better back in my day" that may not resonate with the younger viewer. Probably better reading for a footballing reader than a jungle reader but could work for both. Some of the anecdotes are genuinely funny and his great personality shines through.
A good insight in to Harry’s life. He comes across as humble, caring and down to Earth. Some of the stuff he comes out with is amusing and it was altogether a good read.
Fantastic book! If you’re a fan of anything football or even just Harry Redknapp you’ll love all the memoirs within this book! Great tales of historic events as well as some much more recent ones!
An entertaining insight into the life of Harry - football anecdotes, frustration with modern football, life in The Jungle, life in the fast lane but with a human touch by remembering his roots.
I'm a big fan of Harry. Hes great craic with many a tall tale to tell and this book is full of them! It does get a little repetitive at times but is an ok read.
