A good read. Okay not the best in the series even though I didn't guess the culprit but because it just felt a bit rough and unfinished. The characters are as great as ever but I'm surprised at the main character's defeatist attitude. She fights for the women in her care but not for herself or her means to help them. Strange! One of her checks has been offered a part-time waitress position but the person responsible for her training is all to eager to pick fights with her. Plus an unexpected arrival of a private investigator has her worried. Especially when a man turns up and says the he's her half brother and threatens to take everything away from her (how? Surely her parents wills were specific in who inherited what). The death of the waitress has suspicion thrown solidly at her boarder. How can she help to clear her name? A lottery fraud, a crooked scheme, break-ins, a kidnapping and threats are woven into a read that is good but not great.
The reader is the one who is blindsided, with no clues leading to the solution of the murder. Too much Christianity. Glad it was short. Left wondering about the half-brother story.
Divine Blindside is the third book in Hope Callaghan’s awesome Divine Cozy Mystery series. This heartwarming series is full of inspiration, hope, and second chances. This well-plotted mystery is a clean read, with affable characters. I’m enjoying getting to know the delightful cast of characters, watching them grow, and learning their backstories. There are lots of twists and turns, along with multiple suspects to keep readers engaged. The reveal came as a surprise to me. I highly recommend this series.
Joanna “Jo” Pepperdine recently opened Second Chances in Divine, Kansas, a haven for women who have recently been released from Central State Women’s Penitentiary. The women, who are down on their luck, have nowhere to go, and Jo provides them with a second chance in life, teaching them how to maintain vehicles, manage their finances, and job skills among other things. In addition to Second Chances two stores, Divine Baked Goods Shop and Second Chance Mercantile, where the women work, which help subsidize the halfway house, there are two gardens that are cared for by Gary, Jo’s gardener, that help feed the residents and provide additional income. Delta, a talented cook and second in command, previously worked as a prison cook at the penitentiary. Nash, their skilled handyman who teaches the women how to build and repair things, has feelings for Jo. Gary, who instructs the women on successful gardening, and Delta grew close while she helped him heal from a physical attack, and they’ve started spending time together.
Everyone is looking forward to the Divine Fall Festival, decorating for the festival and season, plus the baking contest Delta hopes to win. Delta claims winning will put their bakeshop on the map and everyone is enjoying being her recipe testers. Marlee Davison, Jo’s friend and the owner of Divine Delicatessen, hires Sherry Marshall, one of Jo’s residents, to work for her. Janet, who’s tasked with training her, isn’t happy and does everything she can to cause problems for Sherry. After the two women have an argument, Janet heads to the Four Corners Mini-Mart, where she works part-time and causes a scene before she quits and storms out. She never returned to the deli, and Marlee assumes she made good on her threat to quit, but one of the busboys spotted her car behind the building while taking the trash out. Marlee went to talk to Janet, but found her in her car, a victim of foul play. Unfortunately, Sherry becomes a suspect, and Jo is determined to prove her innocence. Jo has fought hard to put her tragic past behind her and the appearance of Miles Parker, who claims to be her half-brother, causes her great distress. Jo doesn’t hesitate to inform him that her parents are both deceased and that she has no siblings. After explaining the relationship his deceased mother had with her father, he tells her that he’s researched her background and is surprised she’s using her massive resources to fund a halfway house and that he’s going to enjoy living in Divine and running her impressive businesses. Now Jo is living in fear that her past and wealth will be revealed and that she will not only lose the farm but everything and everyone dear to her.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I am really enjoying the Divine Christian Cozy Mystery series. This book reads fine as a standalone, but I recommend reading this series in order so you do not miss any character development or the wonderful story of Joanna Pepperdine's mission to help females who have been released from prison. When one of her residents is under suspicion of murder, Joanna promises to hire the best lawyer money can buy if it comes to that. There are a lot of things happening in this story besides the murder. There is a disappearance of a local resident, a ring that is stealing lottery tickets, break ins at the deli, and a private investigator that shows up to give Jo some bad news. I enjoy the characters in this series. There is a group of very strong women who stand up for others. In this book, Jo seems to be unable to stand up for herself and her actions really surprised me. We find out about Jo's background in this book and it was very interesting and explained why she does what she does. The mystery was interesting, but some of the other stories took precedence along the way. I did not have any idea who the murderer was, but when it was revealed, it was plausible. The story is rated as Christian Fiction, but it is subtle without hitting the reader over the head. This is another well-written and plotted mystery with a character development and life in Divine Kansas added a great story. I will definitely look for more books in this series and do not hesitate to recommend it to Cozy Mystery lovers.
I listened to the audiobook of Divine Blindside by Kim Niemi. She has narrated all three books in this series and I have come to love the characters that she voices. Jo is immediately recognizable as soon as I hear her voice. Her expression and emotion when performing this story is well done, was with her being able to sound soothing, sad, resigned and indignant all in a matter of minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this audiobook upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
All 9 of the books in this series were fantastic. If you are looking to read mysteries and amateur sleuthing, this series is for you. Also, the main character of the book (Jo Pepperdine), as well as the residents on her farm all depends on God to help them through their troubles. There is praying at the dinner table and turning to the lord for advice. There are also 2 angels mentioned in each book which gives me the good kind of child every time they appear. These giant men are Divine’s angels and they protect Jo’s land and the good people on it. Ain’t God awesome to send His angels?! Yes, he cares for us that much. I realize this series is not non-fiction, but I do believe in angels and I do believe God cares for us even when we don’t care for ourselves.
This series is different than any of the other mysteries and sleuth books I’ve read in the past in that not every book has a murder in it. Sometimes there is just a mystery and troubled times that fall upon Jo that she has to dig into to get answers. And each book (except the 9th) contains at least 300 pages which to me is really cool because I definitely didn’t want this series to end! What else is different about this series is that Jo owns a farm and houses women who have been recently released from the local prison. Jo is helping the ladies recover from being criminals to being people who can survive in society. She has a halfway house. So, this has definitely been different, because of course Jo has her challenges with the ex-criminals and with helping them get out into the world on their own.
If you want some positive reads, some Jesus and hope, some angels, some family and friendship, and some plain old goodness and the good guy winning in the end - you need to read this series! 5 stars!
Hope Callaghan's writing style immediately hooks me when I read her well-crafted stories. The Divine Cozy Mystery delights the reader with the Midwest setting of Divine, Kansas - the Midpoint of the continuous 48 states, stereotypical and intriguing small town characters, and blocks of unique stores. As a cozy mystery, the story is never too preachy with just the right blend of spiritual elements (prayer and scripture). As a reader, I enjoy how Hope Callaghan summarizes what happened previously, and then throws the reader a new idea or red herring. This helps the reader remember what has happened in previous books and makes the reader speculate who dun it. Hope Callaghan in a non-judgmental way addresses small town stereotypes, as well as contemporary issues (Seond Chances, a halfway house for released female convicts and small town prejudices against these ladies). Hope Callaghan weaves in elements from her other series: an older sleuth, surveillance equipment, second chances, and a scrumptious recipe.
Book 3 Divine Blindspot reveals Joanne Pepperdine’s secret past, hints at two different romances, and has the reader begging for Book 4. Who will win the Divine Fall Festival Baking Contest (Sherry or Delta)? Will Joanne and Delta find love? Will Miles return and create havoc in Joanne Pepperdine’s future? The Raspberry Dream Bars are divine! “Sometimes Family wasn’t the ones you were born with, but the ones you grew to love, the ones you counted on to support you, the ones who had your back when the going got tough.”
I love the way Ms Callaghan uses real life experiences in her books while also using scripture as encourage while going through trials. The Divine Series is the best of the best! Jo gets some shocking news from her past that may effect her being able to keep the farm! With this situation going on she continues her regular routine taking care of the girls she wants to help. She has decided that maybe she is sheltering the girls too much by having them work only at the farm. She talks to her friend, Marlee, who owns the local deli and Marlee hires Sherry. Unfortunately Janet, the lady chosen to train Sherry has a very repulsive attitude toward Sherry from the very beginning. Janet works part-time for Marlee and part-time at the local Mini-Mart. Unfortunately Janet also has attitude problems at the mini-mart. Eventually someone has had enough of her attitude and Janet ends up dead-making Sherry a suspect. Jo, Marlee and Raylene do some investigating of their own and the number of suspects grow. I found this book to be jaw dropping suspenseful and captivating. I can hardly wait to begin reading book 4 of this series
Joanna (Jo to her friends) runs Second Chance, a halfway house for ladies recently released from a local prison. She takes personal pride in her success, and tries to make each lady feel special. Her ownership of Second Chance Mercantile, along with the Divine Bakeshop give them a working participation in rejoining society. Delta is her friend, chief cook and bottle washer, and is ready to enter a baking contest in town. Nash is her right hand man, and works along with her retired farmer friend Gary who grows the best produce in town. She has decided resident Sherry could try waitressing at Marlee's Divine Delicatessen in town. This adventure finds unsavory characters, baking contest entries, murder, and a potential life changing situation. It is fast paced and an enjoyable easy read. Hope Callaghan does not disappoint.
One of Second Chances residents is a prime suspect in the murder, an No and her friends must work to find the murderer. Thrown into the middle of the chaos is an unknown man claiming to be Jo's relative with plans to take the farm as his share of Jo's father's estate.
Delta is working hard on developing a winning recipe for the annual one-off competition at Divine's Fall Festival. Could there also be a romance brewing for Delta?
Following the twisting trail of evidence to solve this murder, Jo and her friends uncover the identity of the murderer. This one almost stumped me, but I had a sneaking suspicion about who it was. Hopefully it won't be too long a wait for the next installment in this series!
When Jo Pepperdine opened up her farm and then opened her farm as a halfway house for women needing a second chance in life, she never dreamed it could be taken away from her. When a stranger shows up and tells her he is gonna love living in Divine Jo's world starts rocking. Add to that one of her ladies is a suspect in the murder of a coworker that no one gets along with, and Jo feels the crush.
I absolutely enjoy Hope Callaghan's mind!! Where do these stories come from? Her God given talent!! I can't wait for the next episode of Devine life!!!!
Joanna Pepperdine owner of a second chance home for former women convicts that need to be given a chance to change their lives around. Joanna, "Jo" as she is called tries to have them work and get back into society. Sherry almost ready to leave has been working at a job at the Divine Delicatessen when one of the employees is found dead in her car parked in the back of the Deli. Sherry being a suspect causes Jo to get involved trying to prove her innocent. With problems showing up in Jo's personal life and the murder, things get exciting with the usual twist at the end.
I gave this book a 5 star rating as you can be erased go at with a Hope Callaghan Christian mystery. I like the fact that there is always a small bit of romance thrown in with a good mystery. The story line similar to a half way house but more like a rehabilitation farm where the woman weren't ordered to stay there but wAnted a second chance in life. I look forward to the next instAllment to this story.
3.5-4: this was better than the second in the series, altho so much crime in such a tiny town is a bit unbelievable.
In this book, Jo is approached by a man claiming to be her half brother, which raises great concern about whether he can take her farm.
A server at Marlee’s cafe is murdered. Sherry, one of Jo’s women, had just started working there and had had an argument with her shortly before the woman was found dead in her car behind the cafe, murdered.
This is the third book in the series Cozy Mystery. This one was good at first and I thought it was going to be great but it was as if the writer decided they were bored and ended the book with who the killer was without keeping us, the reader in the loop. With mysteries, I feel, the reader wants to be apart of how the mystery is solved. Not just the beginning and during but especially the ending. Also, we still do not know if Jo has a half brother. That is left unsolved for hopefully book 4.
What a fun interesting read. I love following the progress these women are making,as they work to reenter regular life. Seeing their self esteem and social skills improve as they prepare for real life. This series reminds us to be kind to each other and not judge people before we get to know them.
I read this in one sitting and it left me begging for more! Though many questions were answered, so many more were raised. Would she lose the farm? Would romance ensue for one or a few of the residences? Which dessert would win????? Hope.....don't keep us waiting too long!!!!!!!!!
Once again Hope has penned a great clean mystery! Continuing with the halfway house for previous convicts, Jo's second chance working farm is the location of another mystery, including murder and a theft ring! I would recommend any of Hope Callaghan's books to anyone seeking, good Christian mystery!
I’m so enjoying getting to know Jo and the gang! I especially enjoyed learning Jo’s back story in this third book! What I like most is that when there is a problem, and there always is, the author always has the characters join together in prayer. Such a great example of what we should do in real life!
This book had some unexpected twists that you’ll enjoy! The ladies pull together again to help each other. I also liked how this book brought out so many’s objections of former convicts who have done their time and are now working towards a better life. This is a very good reminder to all.
Jo and Second Chance Ranch are having challenges. Sherry has gone to work at Divine Deli and has a conflict with her trainer. It could be that Jo has a long lost (half) brother, her dad's son. The mysteries and conflicts come together to make this a book I definitely recommend!
I like this book because it's never boring in this little town of nowhere. I love the main characters and the life they lead. The people are real with true to life problems. I can't wait for the next book. I want to know what the stranger says is the truth about them having the same father. Please hurry with your next book.
Jo gets a huge shock when a man shows up claiming to be family who wants everything she has. Then one of the girls gets a job in town and is drawn into a murder investigation. Jo, Delta, and Raylene bring their heads and faith together to solve the crimes and clear her girls name.
Sherry becomes the first one of Jo's girls to get a job in town. Janet doesn't like having to train Sherry, they have an argument then Janet is found dead. Janet may have been involved with stolen lottery tickets. Man claims to be Jo's half brother. There's a lot for them to figure out. Interesting story and characters.
This was a very interesting cozy Filled with lots of twists, turns and suspense. I look forward to the next episode. I loved the storyline and the cast of characters. This book is recommended for those who love cozy mysteries.
Jo runs a small halfway house for women ex-cons she believes can help start a new life. When resident Sherry starts to work at the deli and the employee she disagreed with turns up dead, Jo and her friends snoop to find the killet.
All 3 books keep me interested and guessing. Love hearing what each members of the family is doing, the religious part also. Great story, can't wait until the 4th one comes out.
I really like this new series and can hardly wait for book #4. Hope Callaghan keeps you engaged in the story right up to the last chapter, and then you are hungry for more. It was an enjoyable read.
It appears there are more episodes in the Devine Cozy Mysteries! The country side, close to a small town, avail Hope many scenarios to develop this half way home and people to come in and out of the series! I will anticipate many more good hours of reading!
Whoa! I was way off on this one! Hope got me good with the plot twist. I'll just have to be more discerning when I read the next part of the series! Great read!
So nice to find another author like Lorena McCourtney that is NOT ashamed of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Prayers. Scriptures. Faith. And mystery, how much better can it get? Try no sex, no cussing and caring about one another.....yep, got it all!!!
