En "Feminismo" Deborah Cameron realiza un recorrido completo y muy aclarador por la historia, desarrollo y actuales debates (sin rehuir algunos de los más controvertidos, como el de las "madres de alquiler" o el de los atuendos de las mujeres musulmanas) de este movimiento social. Partiendo de una doble definición de feminismo como movimiento contra la discriminación de la mujer y movimiento que se funda en la creencia de que las diferencias que históricamente se han creado en torno a hombres y mujeres pueden y deben ser eliminadas, la autora habla de las distintas "olas" del mismo (actualmente estaríamos en la cuarta) y va desgranando debates, autores, situaciones, etc., a lo largo de una acertada selección de temas. Así, Cameron examina la relación y problemática del movimiento en los ámbitos del trabajo, del sexo, de la dominación y de la cultura, entre otros, para considerar finalmente sus desarrollos futuros y la creciente amenaza que suponen partidos y líderes emergentes que pretenden criminalizarlo.

About the author

Deborah Cameron, is a feminist linguist, who holds the Rupert Murdoch Professorship in Language and Communication at Worcester College, Oxford University. She is mainly interested in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. A large part of her academic research is focused on the relationship of language to gender and sexuality.Cameron wrote the book The Myth of Mars And Venus: Do Men and Women Really Speak Different Languages?, published in 2007

Η ατζέντα του φεμινισμού χωράει πολύ πράμα. Είναι σαν μια ματριόσκα όπου ανοίγοντας μια κούκλα ανακαλύπτεις ακόμα μία μέσα και μετά άλλη μια μικρότερη κ.ο.κ. Όλες αυτές οι κούκλες είναι σαν συγκοινωνούντα δοχεία, το ένα χύνει λίγο από το περιεχόμενό του στο άλλο, προκαλώντας μια ατέρμονη συζήτηση. Πχ το να είσαι γυναίκα είναι λίγο διαφορετικό από το να είσαι γυναίκα έγχρωμη, λίγο ακόμα διαφορετικό από το να είσαι γυναίκα έγχρωμη λεσβία κ.ο.κ. Είναι εντυπωσιακό πόσο περίπλοκο είναι το ζήτημα του φεμινισμού, ξεκινώντας από την αδυναμία σωστού ορισμού της λέξης καθαυτής μέχρι το πόσες κουβέντες και θέματα μπορεί να επισύρει και πόσα «κύματα» και εκφάνσεις του έχουν εμφανιστεί στα χρόνια.

Παρότι καίω τον εγκέφαλό μου κάθε φορά διαβάζοντας πόσες κατηγορίες έμφυλου προσδιορισμού υπάρχουν (διεμφυλικοί, άφυλοι, queer, non-binary, genderfluid etc) και στην προσπάθεια να τις κατανοήσω, αντιλαμβάνομαι ότι κάθε ένας τελικά μπορεί να βλέπει και κυρίως να βιώνει από τη δική του σκοπιά τις διακρίσεις που γίνονται∙ κάθε φορά ο θιγόμενος είναι άλλος.

Το να είσαι γυναίκα, ακόμα και σήμερα, μετά από τις διεκδικήσεις και «νίκες» των φεμινιστικών κινημάτων που ευδοκίμησαν κατά καιρούς, ενέχει ένα άχθος επιπλέον, προερχόμενο από διάφορους παράγοντες κυρίως κοινωνικούς, και μεταβάλλεται καθώς μεταβάλλονται και οι κοινωνικές επιταγές κάθε εποχής.

Η συγγραφέας προσφέρει με αυτό το πολύ καλό δοκίμιό της μια συμπυκνωμένη και αρκετά νηφάλια εικόνα της ιστορίας του φεμινισμού, με γεγονότα, παραδείγματα και απόψεις από πολλές σκοπιές. Ρίχνει στο τραπέζι όλες τις παραμέτρους φροντίζοντας να τονίσει κάθε φορά την πολυπλοκότητα του ζητήματος και χωρίζοντας το αντικείμενο μελέτης της σε θεματικές όπως η κυριαρχία, τα δικαιώματα, η εργασία, η θηλυκότητα, το σεξ, ο πολιτισμός, συζητώντας στο τέλος τις ρήξεις και τις προοπτικές.

Θεωρώ σημαντικό και ουσιαστικό να επανέρχομαι στους κόλπους του φεμινισμού και της θεματολογίας του, των ερωτημάτων που τίθενται κάθε φορά και του επαναπροσδιορισμού των απαντήσεων∙ άλλωστε πάντα υπάρχει σε καταστολή αυτό το ενδιαφέρον στο περιθώριο των οποιωνδήποτε ενασχολήσεών μου και το οποίο αναζωπυρώνεται κατά καιρούς και με σωρεία αφορμών. Γιατί κυρίως θεωρώ σημαντικό να είμαι/να είμαστε up-to-date στη μεγάλη εικόνα και όχι μόνο να εστιάζουμε πάνω στα θέματα που μας ακουμπούν/ενοχλούν/θίγουν προσωπικά. Είναι η αρχή της ανοιχτομυαλιάς αυτή, γενικότερα, που μόνο κέρδος μπορεί να φέρει.

Προτείνω το βιβλίο πολύ ζωηρά. Δεν είναι καθόλου υπερφίαλο παρά είναι πολύ καλά δομημένο και εύληπτο, ουσιαστικό και κυρίως «σημερινό».

«Δεν θέλω να δω έναν κόσμο χωρίς φύλα. Θέλω να δω έναν κόσμο όπου το κοινωνικό φύλο δε θα είναι προϊόν εξαναγκασμού ή καταπίεσης, και στον οποίο οι τρόποι να εκφράσεις και να επιτελέσεις την ταυτότητά σου και να σχετιστείς βιωματικά με αυτήν θα είναι τόσοι πολλοί όσοι και οι άνθρωποι της Γης. Θέλω έναν κόσμο όπου το φύλο δε θα προκαλεί πόνο αλλά χαρά.»

A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO FEMINISM

If you're wanting to learn more about feminism but unsure of where to start, this is probably the perfect place. Though you won't get a comprehensive history or a laying down of all the cold, hard facts, you will get an insightful overview of the enormous subject, illuminated from different points of view.

"Their [women's] desires should matter, and their boundaries should be respected. As basic as these demands might seem, they are radical demands even now."

Categories: Each chapter of this book illuminates a separate aspect of the feminist debate. This creates a very comprehensive base, even though each chapter doesn't go into much detail, it serves to bring attention to some of the important points in the debate.

Angles: In feminism, as in every debate, there are different perspectives and different angles. What I really liked about this book was that Cameron did a great job of including many different angles and not presenting one perspective as the truth above all others. It makes it easier for the reader to get a feeling for the subject and to expand their reading.

It's unfortunate that the title of this book will most likely cause a good number of people not to read it, given how polarising any "-ism" can be. But the main reason it's so unfortunate is because this book is a fantastic, well-balanced, sobering, and insightful examination of the current state of feminist initiatives in all their forms, as well as their history and context. Highly recommended!

Απαραίτητο ανάγνωσμα. Καταπληκτικό δοκίμιο, γραμμένο σε απλή γλώσσα, επιστημονικά τεκμηριωμένες απόψεις (σε αντίθεση με την αερολογια που κυκλοφορεί από όσους προσπαθούν να υποβιβασουν τον φεμινισμό) εξαιρετική μετάφραση! Στα συν, η βιβλιογραφία που παρατίθεται στο τέλος του βιβλίου καθώς λειτουργεί ως οδηγός για οποι@ θέλει να να εμβαθύνει στο θέμα.

Ενθουσιάστηκα με αυτο το βιβλίο. Απλό χωρις όμως να απλουστεύει το περιπλοκο ζήτημα του φεμινισμού, της ιστορίας του και των κοινωνιολογικων συνιστωσών του. Ουσιαστικό, τεκμηριωμένο, πλήρες, παρουσιάζει με ψυχραιμία το θέμα και την συζήτηση. Διαβαζω χρονια για τον φεμινισμό, αυτο είναι το βιβλίο που μεχρι στιγμής θα πρότεινα πρωτο απ'ολα σε οποι@ μου ζητούσε ενα σχετικό ανάγνωσμα. 2ο πολυ καλό δειγμα απο τις πανεπιστ εκδόσεις Κρήτης!

Αν έπρεπε να παραθέσω κάποια σημαντικά σημεία αυτό του βιβλίου, θα έπρεπε αναγκαστικά να τα παραθέσω όλα, γιατί πολύ απλά είναι όλα σημαντικά! Μιλάμε για ένα βιβλίο μέσα στο οποίο η Cameron έχει συμπυκνώσει την πολυπλοκότητα του φεμινισμού και τα δίπολα που δημιουργούνται, ακόμη κι όταν απλώς προσπαθούμε να φτιάξουμε έναν ορισμό για αυτή τη λέξη.
Ένα βιβλίο που σίγουρα θα βοηθήσει το άτομο να αποκτήσει μια βασική ιδέα για τον φεμινισμό, ενώ παράλληλα έχει μια πλούσια και ενδιαφέρουσα βιβλιογραφία για το θέμα.

Θα αφήσω εδώ μόνο ένα απόσπασμα, μόνο και μόνο επειδή σε όλες ανεξαιρέτως τις συζητήσεις περί φεμινισμού, έχω αναγκαστεί να το ξεκαθαρίσω σε συνομιλητές που νιώθουν να απειλούνται προσωπικά από τον όρο <<πατριαρχία>>.

"...όταν οι φεμινίστριες μιλούν για ανδρική κυριαρχία ή για <<πατριαρχία>> (χρησιμοποιώντας έναν όρο που στην κυριολεξία σημαίνει <<εξουσία του πατέρα>>, αλλά οι φεμινίστριες τον χρησιμοποιούν ως συνώνυμο της <<ανδρικής κυριαρχίας>>), δεν αποφαίνονται για τις αντιλήψεις, τις προθέσεις ή τη συμπεριφορά μεμονωμένων ανδρών. "Feminism is the radical notion that women are people." (Marie Shear)

This was a particularly good book to read on feminism. Its approach was quite holistic as it looked at various aspects of a woman's life (from culture to sex to rights to name just a few). It did this while also managing to keep a balanced view by looking at both those who agreed with a certain idea and those who rejected it. I enjoyed the many references to different books (which triggered in my mind a "to-read" list out of all the titles I found in this book), people or research projects. My only unhappiness about it is the little attention it gives to the LGBT spectrum. While it is mentioned, I feel that it would have been interesting to read more about it. Regardless of this, this book was highly enjoyable and worth reading for it was full of information presented in such a way that it bordered an academic book without having the dry style of such a text.

A serviceable short history and introduction to feminism, with chapters on domination, rights, work, femininity, sex, culture and 'faultlines and futures'. Cameron's strength is respecting diverse viewpoints and clearly summarising divergent feminist authors' and activists' arguments and positions. This comes at the expense of interesting, gritty argument so that the book remains a little bland. This may be due to the format: it's part of a series of short introductions, and possibly the publishers did not want a personal intervention or impassioned anger. (And what is feminism without our impassioned anger?) So, ultimately, useful but not as exciting as the author's Feminism and Linguistic Theory, her other books on her specialism (linguistics) or her blog and twitterfeed on women and language. The book is published by Profile Books and I regret having given my money to them. The last page lists the other books in their series 'Ideas in Profile': out of 13 books, 2 (two) (sic) were written by women (in addition to Cameron's book). No feminist-introduction-figleaf will make this okay, Profile Books!

Format: pleasant floppy pages, spine did not crack, matt cover that folds over pamphlet-style, nice lilac for the headings.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. A well-structured, non-shouty profile of ideas that give the reader food for thought in a very constructive way. Cameron did a great work putting together of what seems years of research presenting it in the form of a debate and structuring this book into chapters/categories (domination, rights, work, feminity, sex, culture and faultlines and futures).

To quote:

"For feminists it is not enough to say that individual women should have choices.We need to ask why things are arranged in a way that obliges women to make certain choices, and whether we could or should make different arrangements."

and

"Femininity is not just a cultural construct but a cultural imposition - a set of expectations, prescription s and prohibitions, which are enforced through a system of rewards and punishments." 👌

Πολλές πολλές σκέψεις. Αρχικά το βιβλίο είναι μια καλή εισαγωγή στο φεμινιστικό κίνημα, με κάποια κεφάλαια να είναι πιο basic και κάποια άλλα πιο προχωρημένα. Ιδιαιτέρα το κεφάλαιο πολιτισμός και το κεφάλαιο ρήξεις εντός του φεμινιστικού κινήματος μου προκάλεσαν πολλές σκέψεις και προβληματισμούς, με συνέπεια να πρέπει να ανατρέξω στις εκτενείς παραπομπές της συγγραφέως. Το συστήνω σε όλες και όλους!

At times a bit dry, but a really good summary of feminist movements and ideas in the past and today. Great critical analysis of different feminist ideas and perspectives in Western society- ranging from topics of work, femininity, culture, sex and more.

I highlighted so much of this book. Here are some quotes that made quite the impression on me .

“Many brands also produce girls’ clothes which are smaller than the clothes they sell for boys, beginning at an age when there are still no significant sex differences in weight and height”

So already in early childhood! we are telling girls they need to be smaller.

On masculinity vs femininity

“Masculinity is active, assertive, rational, strong and courageous; femininity is passive, submissive, emotional, weak and in need of protection. The qualities women are encouraged to cultivate are also the qualities that are used to justify their inferior social status”. Catch 22

χάρηκα που το διάβασα αυτό το βιβλίο, δίνει ωραίες αφορμές για σκέψη και χώρο για αντιρρήσεις - άλλωστε, νομίζω πως είναι στις στοχεύσεις του κάτι τέτοιο. νομίζω πως ως εισαγωγικό ανάγνωσμα είναι χρήσιμο και ευχάριστα ιστορικό. μερικές από τις δικές μου αντιρρήσεις αφορούσαν σίγουρα σημεία στη μετάφραση αλλά ίσως κι άλλα στοιχεία που πολύ θα ήθελα να συζητήσω. ευχάριστο και ενδυναμωτικό να συνδέεσαι διαβάζοντας με μια γενεαλογία γυναικών και αιτημάτων, διεκδικήσεων και αγώνων. ενδιαφέρουσα και η τεράστια λίστα των βιβλιογραφικών αναφορών για περαιτέρω μελέτη και ανάγνωση.

Ketika membaca buku yang menggunakan topik "feminisme", atau bahkan judulnya sudah sangat tersurat menuliskan "feminisme", ada perasaan khawatir. Khawatir kalau isinya ternyata berat untuk diterima hingga takut jika topiknyaa tidak sesuai dengan pemahamanku terhadap kata "feminisme" itu sendiri.

Itulah yang membuatku menjadi agak pemilih. Aku takut terjebak dalam konsep "feminisme" yang ternyata mengenai dominasi wanita.

Deborah Cameron sudah berulang kali menulis tentang feminisme dan kesetaraan gender. Kalau mencoba gooling namanya, maka beberapa judul buku muncul sebagai hasil pencarian. Maka, aku tidak kaget ketika Cameron bisa "menyederhanakan" apa itu "feminisme" ke dalam buku yang cuma 150 halaman ini. Tapi, jangan salah. Seratus lima puluh halaman yang disusun oleh Cameron terbukti cukup komprehensif bagi mereka yang ingin mengetahui coverage apa saja yang berada di bawah payung feminisme.

Buku ini bukan menjelaskan tentang sejarahnya. Cameron memang menggunakan linimasa pergerakan feminisme sebagai jembatan untuk menjelaskan isu sebenarnya yang sampai hari ini masih diperjuangkan. Ia membaginya ke dalam tujuh bab: Domination, Rights, Work, Feminity, Sex, Culture, dan Faultlines and Futures. Tujuh bab yang cukup menjawab "memangnya, feminisme itu membicarakan apa sih?"

Selain ide dan bahasan yang menjadi cakupan feminisme, Cameron --ini uniknya-- juga mencoba membawa sudut pandang dari anti-feminis ataupun ultra-feminis. Ia menulis esainya sesuai dengan konteks dunia nyata: bahwa di saat ada yang berusaha memperjuangkan kesetaraan gender, ada kelompok yang anti terhadap gerakan itu. Cameron pun mencoba untuk menjelaskan mengapa mereka menolak ide kesetaraan gender. Bisa dikatakan, Cameron mengimbangi tapi tak lupa untuk mengedukasi.

Memberikan 4 bintang kepada buku ini sepertinya memang pantas. Aku yang sebelumnya sudah pernah membaca beberapa buku tentang feminisme merasa kalau Cameron memberikanku hal-hal lain yang luput dari perhatianku selama ini: femininitas wanita, hak wanita dalam masyarakat, hingga masa depan kaum wanita (meski sebenarnya, feminisme tidak cuma membela wanita saja). Dengan bahasa yang mudah dipahami, pembaca bisa langsung menangkap ide apakah yang disampaikan oleh Cameron.

Terlepas dari kontennya yang memang bagus, secara fisik, buku Feminism: Ideas in Profile menggunakan kualitas kertas yang tidak main-main. Setiap halamannya berwarna dengan ukuran tulisan yang tidak terlalu kecil. Tentu, pembaca akan menjadi lebih nyaman. Belum lagi, aku membeli buku ini dengan harga hanya Rp89.000 saja. Semakin tidak merasa merugi.

Apabila kalian melihat buku ini di toko buku dan tengah tertarik untuk mengenal lebih jauh mengenai "feminisme", langsung bawa ke kasir, bayar, dan baca segera.

¿Qué es el feminismo? Esta pregunta, comúnmente contestada con “la lucha por los derechos de la mujer en una sociedad patriarcal”, es más tediosa de responder de lo que parece.
Por años el feminismo se ha manifestado de diferentes maneras y a mano de unas cuantas autoras(es) que han sido silenciadas por atentar contra el sistema patriarcal; puesto que toda manifestación que va en contra de una estructura sólida es tomada como amenaza para todas sus partes que la conforma. Llegada la modernidad, podemos apreciar el surgimiento de las “olas feministas”, que progresivamente fueron dando pie a la desigualdad de derechos laborales, ciudadanos y sexuales. Sin embargo, este progreso tiene, en esencia, considerar a la mujer más allá de la “limitación de su sexo”, sino como ser humano; y con la llegada de los derechos humanos esta figuración aún no ha resuelto la desigualdad que sufre la mujer en diferentes partes del mundo.
Entender al feminismo lleva consigo, lastimosamente, a diferentes contradicciones, puesto que se toma como una “corriente del pensamiento o filosofía” cerrada (nada más lejano). Una visión más precisa sería considerar al feminismo como un conjunto de posturas en constante debate que busca diferentes fines concernientes al restablecimiento de la voluntad de la mujer.
La lingüista Deborah Cameron, en el presente ensayo, ilumina estas cuestiones de manera precisa, como una introducción y esclarecimiento sobre las disputas más comunes en el círculo feminista; no sin antes dar una introducción sobre lo que es el feminismo como pensamiento pragmático.

This should be high on the list for those looking for poignant, well informed and reasoned feminist literature. Cameron intelligently and systematically dismantles opposition to the feminist movement while providing thought provoking and hard hitting realities. A favorite reasoned response to the standard knee-jerk reaction of anti-feminists saying “not all men” and “I’m a feminist, I’ve done my part, move on” is below. It helps provide a succinct response to reframe the discussion away from the individual level to the structural and institutionalized issue that striving for equality really is.

“It is important to clarify that when feminists talk about ‘male dominance’ or ‘patriarchy’, this is not a claim about the attitudes, intentions or behaviour of individual men. Rather, it’s a claim about social structures. A male-dominated/patriarchal society whose structures and institutions- legal, political, religious, economic - put men in a position of power over women. Individual men may choose to forgo certain rights & privileges, but that doesn’t make men’s collective structural dominance disappear. Real equality is about structures, not the personal morality of individuals.”

One of the better books on the general topic of feminism, Deborah Cameron takes the time to explain what feminism means, critiques the notion of ‘waves’ and promotes the notion of intersectionality whilst also recognising the yawning gaps between the haves and the have not’s, irrespective of gender.

The bulk of the book is split into 6 chapters; Domination, Rights, Work, Femininity, Sex and Culture. Deborah Cameron takes the time to set each chapter into historical context, with many references along the way. The conclusion does ask the difficult questions concerning the path feminism needs to take, particularly with regard to inclusiveness or, at least, recognition of differences.

A good supplement to anyone’s reading, written by an academic but not for an academic audience.

La obra de Deborah Cameron es, a todas luces, la mejor de las introducciones que se puede tener al feminismo.

Amplía, abarcando los grandes conceptos, conflictos, críticas e ideas de la agrupación de movimientos que componen al feminismo contemporáneo.

Detallada, compilando una gran cantidad de trabajos literarios, filosóficos, pero también discursos y momentos que ejemplifican y exponen la situación histórica y actual tanto de las mujeres como del feminismo.

Franca, apreciando las múltiples caras del movimiento, Deborah Cameron abre la veda de multitud de debates sin duda ni resquemor, reconociendo en ellos los puntos de vista más relevantes frente a la maternidad, la prostitución, el trabajo reproductivo, la participación política y cultural y la igualdad frente a los hombres, entre un sinfin de conflictos que se mantienen vigentes.

Amplia, detallada y franca, tanto la obra como la artista que la escribe. Un lenguaje directo sin perder profundidad y una composición textual realmente poderosa.

This is a great introduction to Feminism. It has historical data, states the movement's course during the years, speaks about the subjects that polarise feminists and generally makes a great job at exploring some questions with hard (or no) answers.

I didn't like the fact that Cameron did not take sides, but just stated the issues and arguments of difficult subjects. It also didn't do much about intersectionality, other that mentioning the problem and its importance.

Both those "drawbacks" are acknowledged in the book though, and the writer "warns" about her lack of investigation in those aspects of Feminism. All in all it was a great (and well written) essay of this topic that managed to describe a large portion of its concerns, without going deep into analysing them.

Feminizm nedir, ne değildir anlamaya yarayan tam bir giriş kitabı. Yedi bölümde feminizmin temel tartışmalarına yer verilmiş. Yazar bunu yaparken feminizm teorisiyle ilgilenen ya da politik hareketlerde yer alan feministlerin görüşlerini kullanmış. Genel anlamda her şeyden haberdar oluyorsunuz. Yer yer “o bunu dedi, bu şunu dedi, tartıştıkları şey de şu” şeklinde ilerlemesi bunalttı. Onun dışında ileri okuma yapmak isteyenler için sonda güzel bir liste var. Kitapta bahsedilen kişi ve kitaplar da tek tek açıklanmış. Kısaca feminizm hakkında pek bir şey bilmiyorsanız ya da düşünceleriniz karman çormansa iyi bir kitap. Ama sorularınıza cevap bulamıyorsunuz aksine yeni ve daha çok soruyla ayrılıyorsunuz. Ee daha ne olsun… Öneririm.
