In Dangerous Company

Rate this book
In this Fourth book of The Dorset Boy series its 1802, peace is declared in Europe and India is in a state of change. The East India Company is gradually gaining control, but the problem of pirate attacks from their base at Réunion on East Indiamen ships in the Indian Ocean is getting worse. On top of that Maharaja Holkar, who is no friend of the British, has had enough of the internal bickering’s of the Maratha Nobles and is on the march to capture Pune and eliminate the Peshwa. With a daring rescue Marty helps Arthur Wellesley get the Bassein Accord in place. 1803 sees our hero back in Europe, just in time for the war with France to start up again. Put in charge of the Special Operations Flotilla, he discovers that being in command is very different than being number two, that failure is as likely as success and has its consequences. Ship to ship and shore actions, love, loss, revenge and a little business on the side, Marty and Caroline, Blaez and their followers move from one adventure to the next leaving a trail of destruction and pain for the French.

Biography
I am descendent of a long line of Dorset clay miners and have chased my family tree back to the 16th century in the Isle of Purbeck. I have been a public speaker at conferences for most of my career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries and was one of the founders of a successful games company back in the 1990’s.
Now in my sixties, and living in the Netherlands Antilles, I finally got to write the stories I had going around in my head for many years. Thanks to inspiration from the great sea authors like Alexander Kent, Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian and Dudley Pope I was finally able to put digit to keyboard and start writing the Dorset Boy series.
I make no apologies that I write for myself. The stories emerge as I write and I am often surprised by the twists and turns that they take.

Before you read this one, please realize it is a continuation of a series: you will need to read the series in order or the characters / plot may not make much sense to you. This isn't your typical historical fiction novel as it focuses in on the continued life and travails of a young man. There is good interplay between the characters and the author certainly knows how to tell a story. You will also get a taste of old-fashioned ship battles as well as a little bit of a history lesson. I am reading each of these in order, going to the next one immediately and can’t seem to put them down. I picked this up for “free” with my Kindle Unlimited subscription vs. the regular price of $3.99 – I certainly received more than $3.99 of entertainment value and I am sure you will, also.

Needs better editing

Lots of typos or the use of a wrong now and then. Some factual mistakes. In one place it was stated that they would turn Northwest from the Carolinas to get out to the Atlantic. I believe it should be Northeast otherwise you would run inland.
Some of the plots are little unrealistic and duplicated in the series, but after all it is fiction. And relaxing reading.
I will read the next in the series and I would gladly proofread the books but would need some renumeration. I am in the hospital right now trying to type this on my phone so please ignore any errors because I can't figure out how to scroll back on this phone to proofread my own review.

Really?

Like all the books so far in this series, the hero is a bit beyond belief. By age 23 he is a famous Royal Navy Lt, a Lord, enormously wealthy, land owner, shipping magnate, and never does anything wrong. A paragon of virtue and the most accomplished and deadly fighter.

There is a modicum of realism in the history, and a bit of detail about naval warfare, but the series is more amusing than exciting. No comparison to Lewrie!

This is the the 4 th book roof the collection that I have read .

The books are well written and annoyingly so addictive that you read them in a short time ,with some very late nights , and little conversation with other people . It is a pity that Christopher cannot write them as quickly as I can read them . I am looking forward to the next book .

Easy to read

I read the first theee book in the series and was glad to see that it was continued. Characters are liikeable if not complicated and the story line seems appropriate to the period

A Dorset hero, who would have thought?

Very good detail and conscious ability to describe places and characters, very Wilbur Smith like.
A fellow Dorsetshire native who had similar upbringing on the south coast.

Good stories but sloppy research

Simple mistakes of plot flow, like sailing to Falmouth and then anchoring in the Downs before going to Falmouth? Also anachronisms like bowler hats, kepi, Barclays Bank, etc etc

Too many annoying anachronisms

I was enjoying this book until the detective from the Bombay Police appeared, wearing a bowler hat. There was no Police Department in Bombay for about another seventy years, and the bowler hat didn't exist until about fifty years later.

Worth reading

I have read the series and will finish them. A problem in a multi series is after a while you know well most of the characters and their capabilities.

Great sea story

Somewhat different from most other tales of the seas. A good balance of fighting on land and sea with some mystery added in.

Another great installment

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one. I'm usually intolerant of violence but somehow this did not bother me

The continuing Adventures of the Special Operations Force

Book 4 is just as exciting as the previous 3, which is saying a lot ! And no doubt book 5 will continue to provide action, adventure and at times some humor. The missions assigned to Martin continue to be challenges that a lesser person, without the skills & determination, wouldn’t be as nearly as successful. The men of the Special Forces are just as determined and skilled as their leader so they are quite a formidable team.
