Barb

BARB is a Sci-fi Dystopian Romance Short Story/Novelette

My name is Barb, just Barb.

They tell me, I’m the last of my kind.

My mother was a product of the HGE Program, Human Genetic Engineering, and my father, well, I never met him. They killed him, a human male, before I was born.

I’m a hybrid, a genetically altered human, and a lone survivor of the Great Scouring. Scientists wanted to create something perfect, that’s what started the HGE program, but they hadn’t been prepared for the consequences of success. There’s no such thing as perfection, engineered or otherwise.

The war, just like all the others before, has left the world bleak. But this too shall pass; their thirst for blood never quenched for long. Now, I spend most of my days at The Cage, my sponsor’s club. The irony of the name isn’t lost on me.

It’s my cage and their cage. We’re all in this together, now.

Even Jared, the angry man with blue eyes, is with us. Until he’s not. He wants out, and it’s because of me. He wants to take me far away, but there isn’t anywhere to go. The war has touched every land, every man, woman, and child.

But there’s a secret, a small hope that may save us, or end us all.

Barb was fantastic. Quick to read and had a cool factor. Dystopian, but also different - great world building. Beautifully written and well-edited. The ending left wide-open possibilities for a series. I'd love to read more!

Wth did I just read? Omg this was horrible. There was no rhyme or reason for this plot. There wasn't even a plot. Made absolutely no sense.

N. Heinz never fails to create something different and unique, but this one takes the cake. If I'm in the mood for something that has meaning and substance, I look no further than this young lady's work. Great work and amazing growth in the writing style. She also proves herself a wonderful song writer in Barb. Can't wait for more!

This is a genre I normally would not read but really enjoyed. It really makes me think of a future Romeo and Juliet intense love with thing fighting against that love. This story keeps you curious and wondering. This story is very different and that’s what drew me in.

Writing a short story is a precarious balancing act with how much information to add or not add, slow or fast flow, and keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end. Ms. Heinz did an amazing job with Barb. Being able to pull emotions from the characters in such a way that I was laughing with them, furious with them, saddened for them, and more makes this a must read.

I will say, not my genre...but I gave it a try, loved it. Tragic, ruthless, the happiness of feeling emotions (love and pleasure) You root for the heroine and her angry man. This novella was a pleasure to read, I look forward to more of the spellbinding story. Well done, Nicole!!!

I usually don't read dystopian books because it just isn't my thing. I read this book out of curiosity. I actually like it as it dealt with the human psyche. Barb experienced life outside her walls for the first time. Everything is new and she is in awe. The ending indicates there will be another book.
