Manny, short for Immanuel, is the new dictator of a fictional country called Tauligia. In addition to being uncommonly young, Manny also happens to harbor a shocking secret: he is utterly, completely gay.
Luckily, so is his bodyguard, Jean-Jacques.
J.J. is a red-haired Upamian whose race has been systematically discriminated against by the Tauligians. Amidst political intrigue and often ridiculous scheming, Manny and J.J. somehow manage to find some common ground ;) ;)
Furthermore, this webtoon is rather ample with diverse and endearing characters, as well as a captivating plot with numerous twists and turns that keep the reader fully engaged and invested in their final conclusion.
Highly recommended as a light read that also conveys an intelligent commentary on several contemporary issues.
"I wanted to find a humours and heartwarming way to distill some of the political issues i've been reading about over the past few years. Issues of sexuality, ethnic diversity, nationalism vs. globalism, immigration.. etc. A leader struggling with his own sexuality is a great character to deal with both personal and political issues! "
How do you manage to make fun of politics in such an inoffensive way?🤣🤣 I do wish there were more dictator-themed jokes though; those that are there are hilarious and I want more.
The characters and interpersonal storylines are surprisingly deep. Maybe not the main dictator-and-his-boyfriend storyline, it's too straightforward and mostly conflictless. But all the subplots tho?? All side characters deserve their own discussions. As of now, my favourite character is, of course, Margo. /like that scene when she chops off her hair? my heart dropped down to my feet and never climbed back/
I need more chapters, like, now. /And I also wish it wouldn't end with Many establishing democracy or something, because the webtoon would lose quite a big chunck of its appeal if it happens xD/
At first I thought this series would have potential to be funny, heart warming and not totally serious series. However I decided to drop this after 122 chapters because I just felt it wasn't for me after all. It's always pretty much the same scenario everytime and I felt it couldn't offer different changes on what I wanna see in the story.
Starts out as a cute love story with some political satire and grows into a complex, heartbreaking yet uplifting epic about accountability, power, and betrayal. Fantastic characters, complicated relationships, and very cute art. The ending feels a but rushed but I'm willing to let it slide because the story is just so epic overall. One of my top fav comics now!
I've been reading My Dictator Boyfriend for the past few months now and it has always managed to hold my interest and keep me curious to come back to read the continuations of the story/stories being told! There are only a few webcomics that I regularly return to and this is one of them! :)
Amazing plot. I was totally invested, especially at the beginning. The middle part was a bit stretched, while the ending was too hasted. It was a real shame since the first part was made so well!
