I am excited to read several of the stories in this collection, but so far, the only one I have had a chance to read is Aimee Easterling's Half Wolf, so here is my review for that, and I will update when I have time to read more.
I really enjoyed this fun, quick-paced read about an insecure half-wolf learning how to lead and protect her newly formed pack. I liked the characters and wanted to find out what would happen to them. I was quickly drawn into the story (great opening) and generally had no problem suspending disbelief. There was action, humor, mystery, drama, and romance.
I know some reviewers have complained about the main character’s mistakes and poor communication among the pack, but I think that made sense in context. A large part of the story is the main character’s development, both getting in touch with her own wolf and learning how to lead a pack, and you don’t get that kind of growth without making some mistakes. Urban fantasy offers plenty of powerful heroines these days, but I actually prefer books that allow the main characters to grow more.
That said, I am giving this a 4 rather than a 5 because I was occasionally a little frustrated waiting for the main character's understanding of the situation to catch up with my own. However, there were also a couple surprises that I didn’t see coming.
This is the first novel in Ms. Easterling's Alpha Underground series, but it stands well on its own. The editing was fine. Readers should be aware that there is some violence and one sexually explicit scene. Personally, I wasn’t uncomfortable with any of the content.
I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys character-driven urban fantasy/paranormal romance.
