In the distant future, on the planet Fortune, tech is low and times are hard… especially for those living in Nike's slums.
Gideon Quinn has barely set up shop as Nike’s—and Fortune's—only private facilitator when an idealistic young medic reports several patients have gone missing.
Gideon takes the case, and soon finds himself tangled in a cruel enterprise fueled by greed and vengeance that targets the most vulnerable of Nike’s population. And the investigation only grows more complex when a woman from Gideon’s past appears at his door with a missing person of her own.
Now Gideon is faced with a bitter To save the people no one else cares about, will he be able to bring home a man he’d as soon see vanished from the face of Fortune?
Fortune’s Fool is the second Gideon Quinn Adventure, a future fantasy mashup of steampunk, action, and noir. If you like action, down-at-heels heroes and comic banter, you'll love the world of Fortune. What readers are saying about Fortune's "Absolutely, unreservedly recommended." "I laughed out loud, several times." "Ms McClure and friends have a solid foundation for a series that I hope continues to produce new books." "…exceptional world-building,and characters which are continually fleshed-out which each novel…" "I'm already looking forward to the curtain rising on the next act."
I love this quasi-Steampunk universe and the characters that Kathleen McClure populates in it. It's a wonderful combination of mystery, sci-fi, and adventure all rolled into one. Whatever she writes, I want to read it!
I loved this book! Clean, funny, and touching with a great mystery plot, realistic dialogue, and wonderful characters. Gideon, Mia, Jinna and all the rest will steal your heart away. I received a copy of this book for review consideration.
At last, another story from Kathleen McClure about Fortune. This is the third of them and it is wonderful! Like the first two, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. (I know because I read the second novel first myself.). However, each story deepens one's understanding of the planet and the characters so I think you will want all of them. After all you don't find this quality of writing every day! As I started reading Fortune's Fool, I thought the same thing I always think with the Fortune chronicles. "Why can't more people write like this?" The writing is smooth, the adventure is intriguing, the plot is tight and moves quickly and you won't find better fight scenes anywhere. (Read the author's profile to see why.). The characters are interesting and likeable. The female characters are strong, not a shrinking violet among them. What sets these books apart for me, though, is the author's subtle humor shown through the snarkiness of the characters. (Think about the humor in the "Indiana Jones' movies, and that is what you get here.) With this book, I also realized how much world building has gone on. With my favorite authors, I get a sense of entering a familiar space and again meeting people I like. I had that same feeling with Fortune's Fool, I just sank back and relaxed, smiling as old acquaintances made an appearance.
A super good story continuing Gideon Quinn's adventures after all the shenanigans we all totally enjoyed in Soldier of Fortune.
I found the pacing of this quite different to Kathleen and her co-writer's other books, which was not a bad thing at all, i rather liked it. While the story mostly drives along in Kathleen's usual fast paced style we are also left with the crew back at Doyle Street who have no idea what is going on with Gideon -- and all the others who have gone missing -- while getting the cafe ready to open and having a baby. So it's quite nice to get these little breathers between the fast paced scenes involving Gideon and co. to catch our reading breaths.
And not only do we have all our favourite characters back and in the thick of it, but we have a few new ones to meet and enjoy reading about, yes, even those nasty ne'er-do-wells.
All in all, once again, brilliant writing, great characters, and great story telling. I just can't wait for Kathleen to add the finishing touches to the next Fortune book, The Crew Who Came in From the Cold, which i will be diving into with absolute joy.
And i'll say it again, like i say on all of books coming out of Outrageous Fiction, if you're looking for some great action packed character driven story telling then look no further than their website for all your reading needs. You shall be satisfied.
Characters were well developed, the plot was complex but moved consistently.
Usually, when an author adds topical references or tries to be clever, it comes across a bit hackneyed. Naming a restaurant ‘Macguffin’ and having a child cite various plays as examples of tropes...it was sublime. Late in the book, when a large man speaks of the book he was reading and references a hero’s journey...and it was completely organic to the story!!!
I will buy the next book without hesitation. Top quality writing, all around.
Love this series! Firefly-esque sci-fi/fantasy with a splash of steampunk. It's been a while since I read the earlier books - and I'm going to have to go back and read the whole series again! (-and I almost NEVER do that!) Honestly, I should probably knock off a star because there are some obscure references and a fair number of characters that aren't particularly well fleshed out unless you HAVE been introduced to them in the earlier installments - but I'm not going to. I AM going to suggest that if you are considering this series do start at the beginning. It will be worth it!
Gideon knows all about keeping your 'family ' close. so when Tiago says that some of his patients are missing, Gideon kinda ignores him. until Tiago disappears. and then Gideon. and he's supposed to save them all?
just a great wrap up to a really fun series. the characters interact so well with each other and their environment. this is fun for all ages. just dive right in!
A swashbuckling adventure with a wee bit of steampunk in a richly described world of a possible future for Humanity. The well-developed cast of characters continues to expand, the additions waiting in the wings to be called upon the stage as the plot demands and possibly in future books. Ms McClure and friends have a solid foundation for a series that I hope continues to produce new books.
This was another great adventure for Gideon your friendly neighborhood facilitator. I have to say that Gideon's plans, or lack thereof, leaves something to be desired but it his defense it works 🤷♀️. I'm already looking forward to the curtain rising on the next act.
