Allene Whelan is scavenging through the ruins of the apocalypse when she finds a magical tarot card, triggering a dizzying tailspin into the world of the unseelie sidhe and their sensual magic.
A new paranormal romance series from New York Times Bestselling Author SM Reine.
Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy and paranormal novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.
If you would like to know the instant my next book is available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a wicked cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil
Okay. For those of you who haven't read anything in S.M. Reine's Decentverse, you're missing out. It's a batshit crazy urban fantasy romp that has more twists and turns than the legendary labyrinth of the minotaur (that's not an obscurely subtle reference to anything that happens in these books, btw. I just like minotaurs and these books are crazy. CRAZY GOOD, PEOPLE. But also crazy. Like, WTF just happened and how did I not see that coming??? OMG THIS IS SO GOOD! crazy.)...I lost my train of thought with that aside, but all of it's true so I'm not going to go back and change it. Not a word. It's crazy. And good. And crazy.
I think the point I was trying to make is that if you're not reading this series and you enjoy a rollicking urban fantasy romp, you should check it out. You get a massive, interconnected world chock full of werewolves and fae and gods and demons and magic and it's ridiculously engaging. RIDICULOUSLY.
Anyway. This series takes us back to shortly after Genesis. The world has reset and it hasn't quite found its rhythm again. The fae courts are doing battle with the True Kingdom, people are still being rebirthed spontaneously into their new forms, and things are weird.
In this center of it, Allene meets Leander, discovers she's integral to defeating a prophecy, and tries to find her place in this new life. I'm curious about Keane (I want to know what makes that Raven Knight tick). I'm delighted with Leander's...ahh, maybe I shouldn't mention this part. Let's just say I'm happy with the path he's decided to follow and leave it at that.
AND THAT ENDING. I'm going to be slowly dying inside until the next book. THINGS ARE HAPPENING AND OMG!
There’s a cute little intro for Knave of Blades that gives readers a time frame reference. This book starts not long after Genesis – an apocalyptic event in the Decentverse that changed everything. As with all series in this immense world created by S.M. Reine, Tarot Witches: The Raven Knights Saga can be read as a stand alone series, but I’m pretty sure, once you start, you’re going to want more. Trust me, I’ve been delving into this world for years and I still get excited when I find out there’s going to be a new release. Each series in this world is just a little bit different and gives you a totally different perspective. Not all of them are quite as full of “smexiness” as any of the books that deal with the Tarot Witches, but what do you expect from Sidhe? 😉
Allene’s life changed, just like everyone else who survived, after Genesis. That was nothing compared to how it changed after finding the tarot card, the Knave of Blades. Once she finds Leander and Keane, things get even crazier… or sexier… and a little dangerous and… Well, let’s just say a lot happens in a lot of really interesting ways.
Readers learned a lot in Knave of Blades, but there’s still a lot of questions, especially after that ending… Cliff hanger isn’t a strong enough term for how things were left on that final page… especially after… well, you’ll just have to read Knave of Blades to find out.
There was so much to love about Knave of Blades. The supporting characters were what I’ve come to expect from this author… witty, strong, well developed and with just enough mystery surrounding them to keep things interesting. I loved the little connections that were woven into this one – those are the things that make me itch to re-read previous books in this series to see what I missed or other little hints I can pick up.
So… start here or visit S.M. Reine’s website to see if anything else catches your fancy, but please do yourself a favor and give one of this author’s books a try. You’re welcome 😉
I received Knave of Blades in exchange for a fair and honest review.
First off this is an amazingly sexy book. It is a continuation of the Tarot Witches series but also a new saga. Being familiar with SM Reine is not necessary to throughly enjoy this book. Allene was minding her own business and surviving as a scavenger in post genesis Portland, Oregon. Alone as usual, the sound of a car in the abandoned neighborhood shocks Allene. She runs toward the sound and finds a horrific scene. One very large man was beating another very large man while a van full of kids burns. The 2 big guys disappear and another man rushes to rescue the kids. As she approached the van blowed up. Most of the kids got out and the man was injured. She rushed forward to drag him back from the van and her life changed. After the man came to and left with the kids she checked the van for anything of value and came across a tarot card that sent pleasurable vibes and a vision through her. The following day she goes to sell it and bumps into the handsome man she rescued from the day before. He is there to rescue the man getting beaten yesterday and she foolishly volunteers to distract the Nightmare demon running this place. She makes good small talk until the sirens go off and the demon attacks her. She is swallowed in darkness and fear but then she begins to change. As she transforms all darkness is abolished and both men emerge and take her to the Autumn Court. His name is Leander, her handsome rescuer of children. She feeds off sex and must use her power to rescue the whole world.
Oh my gosh, this book was fun. It was like a step back to the original Tarot Witches, except completely new and kind of unexpected. You don’t need to be familiar with any of the backstory to read this - and if I’m being honest, I only remember bits and pieces myself because it’s been a while since I read the other books. There’s characters from the originals, but they’re not the main focus. Instead, we’ve been given a new selection of characters to fall in love with. And hello, it’s sidhe magic, so how could we not fall in love? I’m so intrigued by this Keane/Allene/Leander triangle - all such interesting characters in their own right. I can’t wait to find out more about what makes Keane tick, and I especially look forward to Allene discovering more of her *ahem* powers. What? It’s a sexy book. Sue me. I also loved the conflict between the True Kingdom and the Courts, because if you’ve read other books in the Descentverse, you’ll know that not everyone thinks so highly of the Courts. I always find the shift in perspective so extremely interesting, depending on whose story you’re reading. I wasn’t even mad that this one ended on a cliffy either. Know why? Because it means we’re getting more!!
WOW - just wow!! another brilliant book to start a new series from this amazing author!!! Its riviting, sexy, intruiging and such a compelling read!! The character and story left me breathless and begging for more!! Must read!!!
I received this book from the publisher and author in exchange for my honest review.
Tsssss! Can you feel that heat? Boy this book was HOT! Steaming HOT! I will admit I tend not to read much PNR, but I love Sara Reine's PNR worlds and this is definitely was one to get caught up in! Although this book does follow on from the previous Tarot Witches series, which I loved, you don't have to have read them to begin this one.
Allene is a scavenger in the aftermath of Genesis, picking up everything and anything that she can sell from the abandoned houses of Portland, when she hears a sound that does not happen very often in this post-apocalyptic city. After investigating and seeing certain things, she discovers a tarot card - the Knave of Blades. Only when she tries to sell it as a distraction to something else happening, does she begin to Rebirth. No longer is she a mundane human - she is something more and oh my, are her powers interesting! She soon finds herself in the world of the sidhe and has to learn, understand and deal with everything thrown in her path, even if the decisions she now has to make were not ones she would have made before her Rebirthing.
I loved the characters of Allene, Leander and Keane and the love triangle that appears to start. I can't wait to find out more about Keane and his reasons for being "unavailable"! The relationship between Leander and another was intriguing too - looking forward to seeing how this moves forward after the events in this book and especially after the ending!
This book was seriously sexy and would definitely recommend it if you're looking for some very hto action!
Thanks to Sara and Angie for sending me this copy to review!
I'm a big fan of SM Reine's work mainly because of how smooth her entertaining stories are. Whether I'm devouring three books a day or suffering from a slump, it's never a struggle to get into her books after the first page. Dialogue is her strength, I think, and she does a great job at building her story around the people interacting.
Knave of Blades introduced characters without it being too overwhelming, and I was able to follow along the main characters' own paths. The world she's built in the Descentverse is addictive for its use of the classical 'monsters', but she adds her own twists to make her world unique. Allene was an interesting character to read about. Reine is very straight-forward with her writing so it wasn't hard to get into anyone's POV. Meeting Allene for the first time through Leander's POV was a great way to leave a good first impression. It set the tone for me in how I should perceive her. Leander's character was something I enjoyed because he really struggled the most out of everyone else, specifically emotionally. Without spoiling anything, I'll only say that he, like the others, handled themselves very well in acting gracefully and mysterious. Showing just enough to keep you intrigued without revealing all their cards.
It's crazy how so many things happened and yet it still felt like it ended before I wanted it to. It was a good, balanced mix of post-apocalyptic suspense, sexual excitement, and fantastical wonder that kept me reading until the end. I definitely want to check out the series set before and after this one to delve further into the other characters mentioned, and I highly recommend you check out this book. If a future-one-at-a-time-type of RH (reverse harem) is not for you, I'd recommend any other of her books.
In this topsy turvy world that the author has created, I often have times keeping the timeline and characters straight. That being said, you can definitely dive in wherever, because my previous experience with the world, while beneficial for recognizing names, is totally not helping me predict any outcomes.
We join Leander, now a sidhe post-Genesis, who is one of the higher-ups in an anti-court “True Kingdom” group. It seems very glamorous, being the rebel fighters of this story, but early on we watch their co-leader try to kill some kids – instant side shift! Now firmly on the side of the courts, or at least people who don’t kill kids, we meet Allene, a scavenger mundane just trying to survive. While checking out the wreckage of the kid-killing mobile, after watching the True Kingdom big bad drag off a court knight, Allene discovers a tarot card. If you’re familiar with this world, you know these are bad (kind-of) news, or at least signal some big trials.
A lot happens pretty quickly – there’s transformation, lots of dirty, smutty goodness, and a mix of betrayal and rejection. Roll all that together, and you’ve got an epic showdown with sexy results! We don’t get a really neat, nice HEA at the end here, either. Beware – there are cliffhangers! I can’t wait to see where this goes next!
First and foremost: SM Reine continues to amaze and delight me with every book she puts out. Knave of Blades is no exception. Really, the best description is "WOW!!!!"
This book is the first in a new series, The Tarot Witches: The Raven Knight Saga, and showcases just how versatile of a writer SM Reine is.
In this book we get to see how Allene, a previously mundane woman, deals with her transformation into something magical. This book can be best described as steamy with a lot of heart. I can't wait to read further books in this series!
For those who are familiar with the descentiverse, this book is a perfect continuation of the original Tarot Witches series and takes place two years after the events of that series. You will also see some other beloved, and not so beloved (ahem, Titania) characters from the previous series.
For those who have never had the privilege of reading any of SM Reine's books before, Knave of Blades is still a great book that can be read just fine on its own and just might leave you itching to read more.
Knave of Blades by SM Reine I was given a copy of this book for and honest review. Ok, as always Sara grabs you with her books. Knave of Blades was can’t put down, sit on the edge of your seat awesome! This is from her Decentverse series and takes place a few years after Genesis. Alleen is a mundane that didn’t turn after Genesis. She woke up in Portland and scavenges for a living. She meets up with some hot fae males. Leander and Keane. Aaaaand the excitement begins There’s a prophecy, (it’s always exciting when there’s a prophecy) called The Fenrir, that will be brought on by Macsen, (who is Leander’s bestie). The son of Morgause, who is the leader of the True Court. The 5th fae court, that is trying to bring the downfall of the rest of the Courts. There is sex, because you know…Fae!! And Allene gets to have multiple partners so this make for some steamy reading. I can’t recommend this book enough! So, go and get it! You won’t be sorry!
Not since the sixties have I seen such sexy flower power! Sorry, that's all you get, no spoilers! Just this is mostly Ms. Reine's usual story with twists and turns in the fantasy world within our own. Familiar places with unfamiliar buildings or beings.
This one is a bit more erotic than most. If that's a turn off for you, maybe skip and read some of her other books. If not ENJOY!
I like reading about the Tarot Witches, even if this one finds herself in new places with bizarre but fun abilities.
I want to say more but don't want to ruin the adventure of reading it yourself.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. It comes live to Amazon tomorrow. Hope you get the chance to read it. It is a new series within many series(s) and I think it could be a place to start on Sara's writing. I still advice starting at the beginning with Six Moon Summer.
Allene is a scavenger after Genesis, she is just coasting by trying to keep to herself. Until she finds a tarot card, The Knave of Blades. It turns her life upside down, to say the least.
This book is hot, intense, and was slightly out of my comfort zone and I loved every minute of it! I won't give away all the details but the concert scene was freaking fire!! This book is full of feelings and emotions that take you from one end of the spectrum to the other in a matter of minutes.
Between Keane and his mystery, Macsen and his darkness, and Leander and his loyalty, I wasn't sure who to root for, who to hate, and who to do away with completely. I was torn until the end, then I was happy but still curious then shocked that we are just left hanging... until next time.
Wow. Buckle up - the Tarot Witches are back, post Genesis, in all their Fae sexiness.
Delivered in the confident style we have come to expect from Ms Reine, this is a fast paced, chemistry filled romp through the opening volley for this new series. Obviously, there is some scene setting and background building, but not in an intrusive way. This is very much driven by the characters and their interactions and although there are the inevitable world domination plans ruminating in the background, I was, on this occasion, able to follow them. Yay me!
For those of us familiar with the incredibly complex world that Ms Reine has created, this is a comforting return.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Allene has been scavenging through what’s left of Oregon after the apocalypse and when she finds herself upon an unexpected situation, she finds a unique tarot card, the Knave of Blades. When she touches the card, it awakens the magic she didn’t know she had inside of her and she becomes a deadly and rare seelie sidhe who is able to stop other seelie sidhe making her a formidable weapon.
If you haven’t read the tarot witch series do not let that detour you from this book because even though there are some characters in it from other Reine series, it doesn’t detract from the story and you won’t be lost at all. If you love hot and steamy sex scenes this is definitely for you! Seeing inside of Faerie is something that draws you into the imaginative world that this book offers.
Awesome awesome awesome We are a couple of years past genesis where many humans changed into new creatures when they were reborn. Allene is struggling to survive when she is in the wrong place at the wrong time but destiny just hit her full force when Knave of Blades finds her. She trys to ignore how it effects her when she uses it to try to help save a couple of side from the aweful smelly distasteful Nightmare Gutterman when all of a sudden she rebirths into a rare Sidhe herself, the ones she was helping grab her and take her to middle earth saving her in return for saving them. cant give away to much more without spoiling the story but awesome to be back in SM Reine's World oh how i have missed it while you were dealing with life and writing romcoms
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed the story of Allene, and this book was also a nice trip to visit some characters we haven't seen in SM Reine' s more recent stories. Love, betrayal, adventure, it's all here. I am not really into all the x-rated stuff, but the story is so enthralling that I didn't mind it so much, and it is part of the fae lifestyle. Another nice thing about this series starter is that you don't necessarily have to have read any of the other series the author has written, you can start with any series in her universe and know what is going on. I will say no matter where you start, you will always want more of SM Reine' s stories!
Well that book was certainly a page turner in more ways than one, talk about a sexy, steamy supernatural Sidhe tale. This book was definitely not what I was expecting and the author kept dishing up surprises throughout the book. Hot blooded sexed up Sidhe warriors engaged in some risque situations with a few twists and turns thrown in to get your imagination running wild, what's not to love. I could have done without the cliffhanger ending but that just means I have to wait and see how it all turns out. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
My God, this book was sexy. If you're not into sex, I do not recommend this book for you. This book is a part of the Tarot Witches world along with the rest of this wild urban fantasy story she's concocted throughout various series. It's a very quick read, the imagery is great, and the sexy people are quite sexy. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that I'd have liked it to be a bit more elaborate but I suppose that will happen over the next books in the saga. I also didn't believe the two characters in love were actually in love. It felt artificial. But that's just me.
This was a great read especially as it links on with multiple other series S.M. Reine has written and you can either read this as a stand alone or as part of the other interconnecting series. There is plenty of twists, mistrust, revelations, some smutty scenes to steam up the windows as well as plenty of action and mystery to keep you hooked. I can not wait to see what happens to not only Allene but also Leander, Keane and Macsen cause you know those guys intrigue me a lot ;)
I got this as a Patreon early bird. It’s brilliant! It’s been awhile since I was in this universe and to be honest, I’ve forgotten some of the characters and details but I enjoyed this anyway. The Tarot Witches are back with a new level and Allene is the first. This is another solid read from S.M.Reine with some steamy assistance from her sibling.
A fairy tale with a twist , or a twisted fairy with a tail ?
Allene didn't mind waking up alone states away from her life before the world died and came back altered , but picking through the scraps of suburbia Allen finds more than she could ever imagine in the ruins of a burnt out van .. Life and love will never be the same again .
I found the plot in this book to be well developed . The steam factor in this is definitely for adults only. Great chemistry between the characters. Hard to describe the plot of this book without giving it away. Looking forward to the next book in this Saga. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Giving it 5 stars cuz I like the story so much. The characters are, well, amazing, funny, having sex while being funny. or is it being funny while having sex. I like these better than the first tarot witches. Normally I don't like romance stuff but we're fighting for a cause here. Thanks. And I'm serious about the humor.
I liked the original series of tarot witches, but something about this one just didn't sit right. It just didn't seem like an S.M. Reine book. It was okay, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to re-read it like I do for her other books.
Bummer. The tarot witch series from several years ago was a favorite guilty pleasure. This addition would benefit from a great deal more character development. The whole thing was ridiculously rushed.
I received a free copy of this in exchange of a review. I had a harder time getting into this one for some reason but am interested to see where it goes from here.
