An off-duty detective gunned down. A dead woman. A missing student. And now, a former policeman in search of his past. Dead or alive, something connects these people, and it's up to D.I. Carl Sant to discover what it is.
A series of cold-case inquiries leads D.I. Sant and his colleagues to investigate a botched assassination plot dating back to the 1980s. The deeper they dig, the more secrets are revealed, including shocking connections to the infamous National Front.
Meanwhile, the memory of former P.C. Tanner, survivor of the assassination, is recovering. Sant must find Tanner and figure out who is behind it all, before his superiors lose their rag and more lives are lost.
Dan Laughey was born in Otley and bred in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, a hop and a skip away from the Leeds setting of his Chloe thrillers featuring no-holds-barred Detective Inspector Carl Sant. He now lives in nearby Guiseley and shares his time between England and Thailand, home of his in-laws. He lectures at Leeds Beckett University where he teaches a course called ‘Youth, Crime and Culture’. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Salford University and an MA in Communication Studies from the University of Leeds.
I recently reviewed book one in the Carl Sant Murder Mysteries, Chloe – Lost Girl and enjoyed it so much that I downloaded this book, book two immediately. Chloe – Never Forget begins exactly where book one ended, it was like it was just a continuation of the plot and not a new book.
In Chloe – Lost Girl there were a few loose ends not tied together by the end of the book, one of the reasons I was glad that book two was already available and why I needed to start it right away. This book aims to tie those links and complete the puzzle. This does not work as a standalone, so you need to read book one first or you won’t understand what is happening.
This time Detective Carl Sant is still trying to connect the dots from his murder investigation of an off duty officer on a bus. He believes that there is a link between the shooting of the officer and a shooting in 1984. He needs to contact a retired PC – Officer Tanner who now goes under a different name. However, Tanner was injured and is still trying to regain his memory of the incident. As well as the shooting, Carl Sant is still searching for missing student Chloe Lee from book one.
If I am completely honest I actually preferred book one to book two. The first book I was always attached to and eager to read, nevertheless, I was still interested throughout this one especially to see how all the pieces of the plot fitted together.
There was plenty of action, surprises, and twists and turns throughout and whilst I enjoyed the ending I had already worked it out a few chapters earlier but my discover didn’t ruin it for me, luckily.
If you like crime fiction/ police procedural’s then both books are worth a read. Just make sure you read book one first. Author Dan Laughley does recap some events but it’s always better to start at the beginning.
This is book #2 of the Carl Sant series. This book does pick up where the first book in the series, Chloe: Lost Girl ended, so I would recommend that you read book #1 first.
Picking up from the end of the previous book in the series, this book takes us straight back into the investigation of the murdered off duty detective which happened in the first book. D.I. Carl Sant has bodies piling up and also a former policeman who can’t remember what happened. He still needs to find what links everything together though. Carl Sant is a great lead detective and I really like him as a character. He continues to be as determined and gritty as he was in the first book to try and help him solve the case. Working with his team, Capstick and Holdsworth continue to be likeable characters and work well with each other.
The book is fast paced, and the story is as gripping and addictive as the first. Based in Leeds, the location was fabulous and whilst I’ve never been there, the writing put great pictures in my mind of what this city was like, not just today but in previous years. I loved the way both books directly follow each other, with no gap in between for unseen things to happen, making sure you capture every single thrilling moment. It is jam packed full of tension and suspense, and the storyline will keep you hooked to find out just what the hell is going on!!
I would highly recommend not just this book, but both books of the series. I would also love to see these stories as a TV program, as this is just the kind of thing that would work really well on the big screen! This book ties all the loose ends up from the first book, whilst also tying up the loose ends that it makes on its own! A fantastic thriller of a book with a completely unexpected ending! Would love to see more of Carl Sant in future books!!
Following on from Chloe: Lost Girl, the story picks up with PC Tanner, now known as Nigel Fleming. Unfortunately he cannot remember the incident about which he is being questioned ... well, not at first.
As time passes, the mystery of the 'are they connected or not' cases becomes abundantly clear. Of course, Sant was right, but someone is determined to make sure he doesn't finally join those dots.
This is a speedy read, with the tension escalating as Sant gets closer to solving the mystery and there are plenty of twists and turns on the way.
This is reminiscent of the TV series Line of Duty, with the corruption of high ranking police officials at the core - exciting, frustrating, tense ... all those magical ingredients that make a thrilling read are thrown into the mix here. (Though the phrase 'bent copper' is not said ;) the implication is well and truly made)
As Fleming's memory returns, he wants revenge. The matter of his priming, and who is involved adds more intrigue. You won't see it coming - it's sublime storytelling. The far right element is both eerily familiar and scary, and brings an added layer of unrelenting disquiet to the already sombre atmosphere.
Back at base, Sant is being fobbed off, pushed every which way by his superiors to avoid him making the necessary connections. The mood between Sant and Lister is grim, but oh so fascinating. Capstick is growing into his role and has much to offer despite his own doubts and the odd 'interesting' mistake. Along with Holdsworth, who continues to be strong and effective, the author has created a very believable working environment and set of relationships. This team are determined to crack the case - regardless of what those higher up might think.
To be honest, as the end drew closer, I began to feel a little disillusioned with the outcome. Wishing that Sant had not let the guilty party get away with it. But, that's how I was meant to feel because there was another twist to come.
Clever writing, indeed.
This was an engaging read, keeping me totally enthralled, rooting for Sant and his team, and desperate for a solution. If you enjoy a thrilling police procedural story, then you can't go far wrong with this.
After reading Book 1, I was happy to be able to read this to find out what happens!!
We’re back with DI Sant as he continues on his search for Chloe Lee, the original case of a missing girl and tries to solve the murders which have been taking place which, he is sure, are linked….
Although his superiors keep warning him off, Sant is determined to find out what the link is and questions numerous people – whilst finding more murder victims. But is Chloe still out there? Will he find her in time? And we will find out what the link is?
PC Tanner, who was involved in the original shooting in 1984 (the event that Sant believes is the link) is still alive and recovering his memories. Will he be able to help? Will he remember who the shooter was? And what impact will it have?
I was completely sucked in to this and didn’t want to put it down. All the events from book one are starting to come together and we’re discovering more and more of the secrets which have been hidden. I was desperate to finally find out if I was right in my thinking and if justice would be served.
I love Sant and love the fact that he goes against his superiors because he KNOWS there is more to it – even though he could be risking his job. But he doesn’t give up!
I was delighted, and shocked by the ending and hope they’ll be a book 3!!
I was looking forward to picking up Chloe: Never Forget, as soon as I put the first book down. Dan Laughey has written a really fantastic duo of crime fiction, and I am very impressed.
This book picks up right where the first left off. I absolutely love how twisted of a ride this book is. Carl Sant is mid-investigation of these cold cases, and where it all leads was perfectly put together. I couldn’t put this down because I needed to know how it ended.
Like the first book, this is a bit slower, but again, the characters are fantastically written. I love when characters continue to grow in second books instead of tapering off.
These books should be read in order to get the full impact of the stories. Twists and turns around every corner, fantastic characters – I highly recommend checking this one out!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of a blog tour with Rachel's Random Resources. All opinions are my own.*
Will we ever find Chloe? I loved every page turn in this book, just as much as the first one. I read with greed as Sant and his colleagues in the police department created a fighting force, one which was paramount in finding out the answers to some of the cases that they were covering. There is believable determination between the characters, and the dialogue and dynamics helped to create people that were believable and likeable. The twists and turns made for amazing reading and I came away feeling satisfied as we sped closer to the ending. The pace was brilliantly handled and my attention was held by the many mysterious links, which were expertly threaded together creating a fantastic read! I was a fan of Sant’s in the first book and I loved him just as much in this next instalment. My only disappointment was knowing that currently there aren’t any further books. I would love to see more from D I Sant, and I hope that Dan Laughey takes heed of this. Brilliant writing, Brilliant story and superb characters! One fantastic book series….I highly recommend.
Chloe: Never Forget picks up where it’s predecessor left off. Carl Sant is in the midst of the investigation into the murder of Sergeant Dryden. Will he find the killer and the missing Chloe?
As with Lost Girl, I loved the Leeds references but this time round, there were more references to a bygone city. A city that I didn’t know as well so my imagination was challenged more than before.
The story took me along at a furious pace. I was chasing round the streets of Leeds, hot on the trail of Chloe and the gunman. There are bags of twists, turns and surprises along the literary way. I seriously needed to know the conclusion to this brace of crime thrillers.
I highly recommend reading both books to get the full appreciation of the investigation that faced Carl Sant. The two Chloe books are a great pair of books and I’m impressed with Dan Laughey’s leap into crime fiction.
Carl Sant is back. And he is determined to solve the dual mysteries of the disappearance of Chloe and the murder of a fellow detective and several others in a brutal assault aboard a city bus. Many twists and turns take you on a great ride around London and keep you wondering if your own sleuthing abilities are up to the tasks as your guessing keeps proving wrong. Right up to the final page, the author has in in his thrall, but then, what’s this? But you’ll have to read the book to get the final word! Well done agin, Mr. Laughey!! I was gifted a copy of this book by the author.
This is the follow up to Chloe – Lost Girl, and I really recommend that you read that book first, so you get up to speed with all that has happened in the story so far. This book starts to connect all the loose ends we were left with, as D.I Carl Sant and the team start to figure out the connections between the dead policeman, a missing girl and a dead woman.
This book delves further into the past as Sant finds clues that not everyone wants investigating. A great follow up to the first book, with lots of twists and turns. Highly recommended.
I read the first and now the second book in this series and still no closure! The story line is great, although a little too much of a history lesson for me. However I'm not going to purchase a third book in the hopes that I will get a conclusion to book 1!
Fantastic book. Could not wait to start after finishing the first one. Read in a day as I just couldn't put it down. Was not expecting some of the twists.
It’s one of the most thrilling books I’ve ever read. Albeit a bit slower than others it’s a well balanced book. The main plot introduced in the first book is resolved and then there is a final jarring twist. Well done.
Author Dan Laughey has penned another fantastic mystery in the Carl Sant Murder Mysteries and Chloe Never Forget is book two.
I have recently read book one – Chloe Lost Girl – and Chloe Never Forget follows directly on from that one so I strongly recommend that the books are read in chronological order.
Chloe Never Forget begins where the threads of the story left off from book one though Dan Laughey has thoughtfully included a fair amount of back-story.
I loved being back with my favourite characters – the dedicated DI Carl Sant and his partner in crime, DC Brad Capstick.
Once again, the pacing was perfect and with an effortlessly transitioning plot-line and there was always plenty of action going on, allowing no opportunity for boredom to take root.
I was desperate to know how this enthralling crime thriller would end and was pleased with the jolting and fulfilling conclusion. I hope that Dan Laughey continues with his foray into this genre.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Creativia Publishing via Rachel’s Random Resources. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
