THE DROWNED MAN Accidents happen to Charley Clutterbuck. Always just scraping by, living on his ramshackle boat, not above the dodgy deal here and there ... And when Jack and Sarah get involved ... they find themselves facing an unexpected danger as they uncover the strange truth.
THE GENTLEMAN VANISHES Bernard Mandeville loves trains. Every Sunday, the elderly and frail Bernard, in perfect attire, purchases a ticket on the Great Cotswold's Steam Railway, takes a seat in First-Class and revels in a journey from the past. But on one particular Sunday, in the midst of that short trip, the impossible happens. Bernard vanishes without a trace ... The family reaches out to Sarah and Jack who must make their own remarkable journey on the rails ... to track down the vanished gentleman!
#1 (#28 in series) A Dinner to Die For 4* 8/25-26/21 (113) Who's trying to 'kill' a new restaurant? A small restaurant war, a possible romance for Jack (though never mentioned after this story, neither Anna, the new restaurant's chef)
#2 (#29 in series) The Drowned Man 3* 8/26-27/21 (97) Accident or murder? (rather graphic description of the drowning); additional setting Gloucester
#3 (#30 in series) The Gentleman Vanishes 3* 8/27-28/21 (102) Missing person case; kind of locked room mystery; set around steam railway; many errors, 'solved' pretty early
Three terrific little tales; these short stories are getting more intricate as the series progresses, and perfect to read in between other books. The first concerns restaurant wars, the second is a rather nasty drowning and the third reveals the village has a vintage train line. The last was particularly good as there were lots of ways the plot could’ve become too silly or derivative but it avoided both. Sadly I seem to have caught up with all the compilations so may have to start buying the individual stories. No option for audible version on the GR menu. Can’t imagine these tales without Neil Dudgeon’s excellent narration (so much better than he is on Midsomer) plus the chiming doorbell introduction.

With characters like family, places like home, the Cherringham duo continue to unravel the curious plots around them. Another great story. To the Authors... I’m never quite sure how to say/think the “hmm” that appears from most characters lips at some point. Would be ok as a single character trait, but not uttered bu most people in the book. And ending statements with, yes? Or no? Bit odd. However I love these books to bits. Read everyone in order, it does help, in order, as the characters evolve as do the locations and reference to them. I hope Jack and Sarah get together at some point, plenty or hints but no action yet. Great books!!!!!
This was three interesting and great story combinations. I enjoyed each separate story and looked forward to solving the story with my two favorite detectives. My favorite was the last story which because of its ending. It was a great train ride indeed. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great detective adventure.
Loved every one of these books! Couldn't put them down. The characters are so real and the mysteries got better with each story. I definitely recommend this series to mystery lovers everywhere! 😀
I have really enjoyed reading all the books in the series. Wonderful characters, great mysteries, & writing! Looking forward to the next book with 3 stories that’s arriving in August.
Another satisfying time spent with Jack and Sarah. I love that the mysteries don't always involve death and murder. Each tale focuses on unraveling the well created puzzle.
I could remember a lot of the details, just not the sweet ending. I loved it even more this time being oh so familiar with Jack and Sarah. Alone or in a series, id recommend this cosy crime! Enjoy!!
As always, I really enjoy these cozy crimes with Jack and Sarah. "The Gentleman Vanishes" was especially good! These stories are even better when listened to thanks to Neil Dudgeon's narration.
I have read all the 30 Cherringham books and enjoyed them immensely. I can never wait for the next to come and I am never disappointed. Thank you for entertaining me.
