Grace Hughes: kicked to the bathroom floor by her partner, her back and side aching from where he slammed the door on her frail body, fighting to regain her breath, she can no longer ignore a simple truth:
SHE MUST LEAVE OR HE WILL KILL HER
Grace is a prisoner in her own home but she has a plan to get free. Detective Sergeant Maddie Ives is going to help her. Maddie now works with a team specialising in getting abused women to safety. She tells Grace to keep a diary, to write everything down so it forms part of the compelling evidence needed to send her abuser to prison.
The detective doesn’t know how bad it’s got. Grace hasn’t been completely honest. But Grace wants to tell her what's really happening so Maddie can get her safe.
Maddie has a lot on her mind. A dead boy in a bath, a car bomber who wants to make a statement, and the return of a scarred DI Harry Blaker.
Can he and Maddie stop the bomber, find a killer and get Grace safe — whether she helps herself or not?
GRACE’S TIME IS RUNNING OUT. SHE MUST ESCAPE OR DIE.
HE WILL KILL YOU: The new unputdownable thriller from Charlie Gallagher. Maddie Ives’ toughest case yet.
Charlie Gallagher was a serving UK police officer for thirteen years where he performed many roles. Starting out as a front-line response officer, he was also a member of a specialist tactical team and worked as a detective in various areas, including elements of Counter Terrorism.
Charlie now writes full time. He lives on the south coast of England with his wife and two kids and, somehow, a spaniel, a tortoise and a two cats, one of which has far more twitter followers.
Grace Hughes is effectively a prisoner in her own home. Tortured and controlled by her horrifically violent partner, she dreams of freedom, safety and happiness. Detective Maddie Ives now works with a team specialising in getting abused women to safety. She tells Grace to keep a diary, write everything down till it forms part of the compelling needed to send her abuser to prison. Maddie also faces a car bomber who threatens to fight again. DI Harry Blaker returns from injury. Can he and Maddie stop the bomber, find the killer and get Grace safe?
Maddie and her team are under pressure to get Graces partner away from her and also to catch a bomber. There is a lot going on in this book. I liked how the stories were seamlessly sewn together. The story is well written and fast paced. There are parts of this book that might upset the reader. This is turning out to be another great series.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author Charlie Gallagher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
WARNING: Extreme physical and mental abuse, graphically written. May not be for everyone.
Grace is living a nightmare ... she's practically a prisoner in her own home. Her husband is extremely abusive. controlling, manipulating, violent, and gruel. When he leaves for work, he locks her arm in a vise, day after day after day. He throws punches that would knock out most men. He kicks, he slaps, he punches.
Grace is planning her escape and if her husband finds out, he will kill her.
Detective Maddie Ives knows Grace. She's been to her house several times, but Grace never opens up about what she's enduring. She tells Grace, keep a diary of the abuse, take pictures of her bruises in order to one day send her husband to prison.
Meanwhile, Maddie has her hands full with other cases. First of all, there's the car bomber who is randomly placing bombs underneath cars. But is it truly random.
DI Harry Blaker returns in time to get the word that he needs to investigate a possible blackmailer. The victim is a VIP and he was seduced in taking some inappropriate selfie of himself to send to an anonymous woman online.
What's the connection? Maddie is going to have to find out or more people are going to die.
This is an extremely well written crime fiction. The author is himself a serving UK detective investigating serious offenses. Due to his experience, the story is credible with characters that are finely drawn and memorable. It's a nail biter from beginning to end with every page filled with non-stop action.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Promotions / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this page turner. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and the author Charlie Gallagher, a real police detective.
My apologies for the delay, with nearly a 100 books to read from publishers.
Charlie Gallagher has been a serving UK police officer for eleven years. During that time I have had many roles, starting as a frontline response officer, then a member of a specialist tactical team and I am currently a detective investigating the more serious offences. My books are a series of thrillers and, rather unsurprisingly, policing is central to the stories.
DISCOVER AN ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING RACE-AGAINST-TIME THRILLER FROM BEST-SELLING AUTHOR CHARLIE GALLAGHER.
MEET DETECTIVE MADDIE IVES IN THIS SECOND BOOK IN THE SERIES THAT WILL HAVE YOU GRIPPED FROM THE EXPLOSIVE START TO ONE OF THE MOST SHOCKING ENDINGS OF THE YEAR.

This is a gripping, stunning, fast paced, cleverly written, tight, exciting thriller.
So great when so many characters blend together into one gripping story, that I just could not stop, reading the last 30% of the book in one sitting.
Great characters, and as expected very realistic. Oh Gosh I just wanted to tell you more, but I can't you will just have to read it...
He Will Kill You is the first novel in the Detective Maddie Ives series by bestselling author and former police officer Charlie Gallagher; it's yet another highly entertaining, twisty and tension-filled read from him. There is plenty of action and a lot of violent behaviour throughout but not enough to be offputting. Once again the believability is there in terms of police procedure as Gallagher uses his former job to inform his work and make it as realistic as possible. That said, some of the happenings do require a hefty suspension of disbelief. However, if you can overlook that aspect you're in for a thrilling experience. After all, what is fiction for if not to escape from reality for a time?
Setting: Kent, UK. This is the second book in the series featuring D.S. Maddie Ives of Kent Police. She has been proactive in addressing issues of domestic abuse and has been working with abused women to encourage them to report their abusive partners. One such woman is Gracie, whose abuse at the hands of partner Craig is hard to read and had me absolutely fuming! But Gracie has a plan in place. At the same time, police attention turns to a series of bomb explosions inside a nearby road tunnel, causing two fatalities and many casualties. Meanwhile, a local businessman, with ambitions to become the next Independent Police Complaints Commissioner, is targeted by blackmailers. As the individual story threads develop, we also see more of Maddie's backstory, who is still romantically involved with a member of a family crime syndicate from her previous area, Manchester... I really enjoyed the first of this series - and this one was even better. The action was non-stop and totally gripping which kept me wanting to read on. Uncomfortable reading in regards to domestic abuse, which really made my blood boil for the victim, and which some readers may find a bit too much - so be warned! But it's not giving too much away to say that the abuser does get his comeuppance in one of several unexpected twists in the tale. Glad that I have several more books by this author, including ones in this series, on my Kindle - 9.5/10.
This was a real page turner that was quite visceral in parts. Grace Hughes is a battered wife who finally realises that she must leave her husband or he will kill her. Sgt. Maddie Ives is a police officer dedicated to helping women like Grace escape their abusers. Maddie has told Grace to keep a diary of her abuse and to take photos. Grace does all this but cannot leave until the time is right (you see why when you read the book). We are also introduced to inspector Harry Blaker who is returning work after injuries he sustained on a previous case. He is supposed to be on light duties so he is keen to help out Maddie. Suddenly the duties are not so light.
There is also a series of car bombings which come into play at the relevant time. The pacing was superb (flat out). I was swept up with Grace's drama, wondering if she was ever going to get away. Her husband had a particularly cruel way of restraining her and reading the section where she tried to get herself free was quite stomach churning. Overall a nasty, bleak bit of domestic noir that was totally gripping.
This is the second Maddie Ives book and while I adored the 1st one, this just wasn't quite the same. A very good read, familiar characters with most of the usual give and take between them, but the pacing felt a little off for me. It just seemed to take forever for all the threads to come together.... and at the end, it still felt like there was more than one loose thread (or dropped stitch) in the knitted pattern. How was Tony killed? What about Vince? For all the horrific experiences Grace suffered, her strength and determination felt off as well.... it was there when the story needed it but disappeared when it didn't.
Intense. Riveting. Emotional. Suspenseful. Addictive. Dark. Complex. This story has one shocking surprise after another. This book brings it ALL! Truly a MUST for your TBR list!
5 estrelas!!
This is the second installment of the series picks up about nine months after the first installment. DI Harry Bleeker has been on medical leave healing from his injuries from the last installment. DS Maddie Ives has been moved into another division and partnered up with another female detective, DC Rhiannon Davies. The story starts off with a bang – literally. A bomber sets off car bombs on a crowded highway. Yeah, that’s the way to grab a reader’s attention from the get-go.
The book summary introduces the primary storyline of a woman named Grace, an abused woman, who keeps a diary of her living hell in hopes that one day Maddie will read it and know what happened to her. There is a storyline about a 17yr old burglar who drowns in a bath of an apparent suicide. There is another storyline of a political candidate that is being extorted for money because of a sex video that was filmed of him. Then there is Harry coming back to work and appears to be floating for now, since Maddie already has another partner.
Most of the story flips back and forth between Maddie and Grace with an occasional POV from another character. At around the halfway point, there was an event that had me whooping HALLELUJAH!!! Even Maddie was whooping FANTASTIC!!! I can’t say though because that would be a spoiler. For a moment or two, I couldn’t stop laughing. This always garners a few strange looks my way whenever this happens when I’m listening to an audiobook while I’m exercising😊
Early into the second half of the story, Maddie and Harry begin to discover links to several of their cases/investigations that are starting to look connected, and this is when all the storylines begin to merge. The rest of the story takes on an intense tone and the end comes pretty quick in an even more intense, nail-biting, heart beating scene with Grace, Maddie, Harry, a car chase with teenagers, SWAT bomb team and a bomber!!! It kind of reminded me of an action movie scene. The final scene was kind of sad between Maddie and her love interest, Adam Yarwood.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Antonia Beamish and her lovely British accent. Beamish has a good grasp of that legendary British humor, delivering perfectly timed snark and sarcasm, for mostly the Maddie and Harry characters and occasionally DC Rhiannon and another DC named Vince.
I LOVED the first half of this book. Many different storylines and characters were continually being introduced, and I was immediately captivated by Grace and wanted nothing more than for her to break free from her abuser. Unfortunately, about halfway through the book, things happened that changed the main storylines (the big twist I suppose, hard to give anything specific without spoiling), and I kind of lost interest. The book became more focused on the police-chase aspect of the story and less on the civilians, which were the characters I personally felt most connected to.
The storytelling and pacing of the book were great to the end, and I think there are a lot of people who will really enjoy this entire book. I would certainly recommend it to people who are into police-focused mysteries. For those who aren’t, know that some of the jargon definitely went over my head and may be of concern to you – but there is a glossary in the back that explains all of the acronyms and police terminology, which is very helpful!
Disclaimer: this book was provided to me in ebook format by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books!
I had a triple-whammy of reasons not to request this book - the red coat cover, the abusive partner plot line, and the fact it’s not the first in the series and I don’t have time to catch up, but somehow the reviews must’ve convinced me - the dangers of browsing NetGalley after a few wines, I guess. I can’t decide whether I’m glad I did: is it a well told police procedural with an accelerating pace? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Not really. There is a warning at the beginning that this contains brutal violence, but once one has committed to a review it seemed too late to pull out.
DS Maddie Ives has moved to Kent and is doing a mix of undercover work to take down a burglary ring, and trying to help victims of domestic violence. A woman she has encountered several times before, Grace Hughes, is an obvious victim, but refuses to admit it. When a series of car bombs explode in a tunnel, the force’s resources are stretched, and Maddie and her newly returned colleague Harry Blaker, don’t have time to be summoned to assist a wealthy businessman who’s being blackmailed or a teenage thief who is suddenly petrified of being released. How are these cases connected and how far will she go to protect the innocent?
I now regret not reading the first book in this series, as I would’ve probably had a much better sense of Maddie’s background, even though they are separate stories. I don’t think I’ll be buying it though, or anything else from this author, as the level of graphic violence described here was too much for me. There is a fine line between showing how evil a perpetrator is, and gratuitously prolonged scenes of abuse and suffering, and this one crossed it for me.
I also didn’t get much of a sense of Maddie’s personality, and again this may have been better fleshed out in the previous book. She has a complicated love life, a disrespect for the rules and authority, and a willingness to take risks, but beyond that we get very little. I liked Harry’s character and wonder if he would’ve made the better protagonist for this series. There are some good side characters like Vince the strongman - someone’s review mentioned he dies, which had me worried, but he’s fine at the end.
The plot took a while to get going and then veered in an unexpected direction, and while I appreciate unpredictability, felt the links between the cases were all a bit convenient and that a fair bit was left unexplained. I’m really struggling with a rating here was I want to give it 3.5 and have to round up or down. I’m going for 4 stars despite my reservations, for good writing and a conventional third person past style.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc which allowed me to give an honest review. He Will Kill You is available now.
Author Charlie Gallagher's "day job" is in law enforcement and it shows.
Charlie Gallagher's insights and police procedurals are consistently on-point and over-the-top.
"He Will Kill You"(Maggie Ives #2) and "Deadly Houses"(Maggie Ives #6) are both fast-paced and gripping thrillers that showcase domestic violence cases and the horrific impact that domestic violence has on abused women, their families, and society.
Many of the author's chapters are not very pretty but they are pertinent.
Both books are part of the Detective Maggie Ives series that could easily be read as standalones.
Gallagher's Detective Maggie Ives is one of my favorite female sleuths. Her acumen and her brilliant "chatter" never cease to impress me.
I am "time-traveling" Gallagher's Maggie Ives series in no particular order and I hope to complete the entire series in 2022.
I listened to the audiobook that was read by Antonia Beamish, one of my favorite narrators.
As long as author Charlie Gallagher keeps writing Maddie Ives books, I will keep on listening!
A traffic jam in a tunnel and cars exploding and the story begins.
It took me a while to work out what the bombs had to do with domestic abuse and what the woman and child had to do with anything but come together it did.
Parts made for difficult reading but this stuff does go on every day somewhere so I read on.
Got to love Maddie Ives she is a feisty character but one I definitely want in my corner in times of trouble. This book humanised her as we had an insight into her romantic side. She and Harry are opposites working to the same standards and objectives they make a brilliant team and I can see how that is going to make this series going forwards.
The story is fast paced with plenty of grit and is unusual as the lines between victim and murderer become blurred.
This is the second in the Maddie Ives series and is even better than the first, although I wouldn't have thought that was possible before reading it. The book starts with an explosion in a road tunnel, caused by a bomb placed under a car. Then we meet Grace Hughes who is being abused by her partner Craig. Then, a prospective candidate for Police Commissioner is blackmailed for an unedifying video on a social media site and Maddie and her partner Harry have to untangle the interweaving clues to get to the bottom of it all. Once I had begun the book, I simply couldn't put it down, apart from a few minutes to try and distance myself from the horrendous abuse being doled out by Craig to poor Grace. It seems unbelievable but we all know that bullies like Craig exist and cause endless damage both mentally and physically to their victims. Charlie Gallagher brings their story to life and has to be commended for doing so. I told a friend that this book grabbed me by my eyeballs and wouldn't let me go until I had finished it. It was so well written that I was living all of it as I read and, for me, that is the sign of a brilliant book. If you enjoy police novels then don't miss this one, although you may have to put your squeamish stomach aside for the ride!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of He Will Kill You, the second novel to feature DS Maddie Ives of the Canterbury police.
Maddie is busy with CID work when DI Harry Blaker returns to work part time after the injuries he sustained in their previous case so, at a loose end, he takes an interest in her cases, notably trying to protect Grace Hughes from her abusive partner and working out why recidivist burglar Toby Routledge wants not only to confess to his crimes but be locked up.
I thoroughly enjoyed He Will Kill You which is a fast paced, high octane, tense thriller which grabs attention from the first page and never lets up. The novel opens with a bang, literally, when a car is blown up in a tunnel. The narrative is tense and gripping and really caught my attention. The second chapter sets the scene of a young woman threatening a receiver of stolen goods to recover war medals, again intriguing and the third chapter focuses on Grace and a domestic violence call out. This is a great piece of writing which depicts the fear and menace of the situation and police helplessness in the face of victim denial. Three strands of investigation, all offering intriguing possibilities and inviting the reader in effortlessly. I would like to say that I read it in one sitting but I can’t as I had to put it down and walk away at times because of what was happening to Grace. It is a credit to Mr Gallagher’s writing that I got so involved with Grace’s character and felt her pain, stress and anxiety. The violence is horrific but probably very realistic. Grace, however, is keeping a secret and what a twist it turns out to be, linking all the disparate strands together. Is the totality of the plot realistic? Probably not, but who cares when it’s such an exciting read?
Maddie Ives is definitely growing on me. In this novel she has grown into a caring, professional detective who is a little cavalier with the rules when they offend her humanity but it makes her a better protagonist. Her personal life takes a turn in the novel but it brings her closer to the gruff, not as uncaring as he seems DI Harry Blaker.
He Will Kill You is a great read with a twist as good as the vaunted “massive” so I have no hesitation in recommending it.
chapter after chapter, this book is mind blowing, will take your breath away and found i couldnt put it down, my favourite character has to be Maddie Ives in this book, what a cracking book it is, Mr Gallagher has made me happy again, every one of his books gets better and better
