The Edge of Temptation

Rate this book
From USA TODAY bestselling author J. Saman comes a sizzling hot new full-length STANDALONE romance

It starts out as a bet.
A way to forget about my latest in a string of bad relationships and move on. I know it’s a mistake. My head and heart are just not into the game. Especially when I have a terrible knack for picking the wrong men.

Then I see him.

The gorgeous man in the dark suit, drowning his sorrows in a glass of scotch is only supposed to be one night of fun. No strings. Zero expectations. No one gets hurts. Sounds perfect, right?

And when I wake up alone the next morning, it appears I’ve gotten everything I was after. That is until I find the shiny gold cufflinks he left behind. Oh, and discover that he's my new boss.

With our ugly pasts still heavy on our shoulders, it should be easy to stay away from each other. To be one hundred percent professional. To ignore the way his heated glances set my skin ablaze, even from across the room. Yep. Impervious is my new middle name.
Even if tempting is his...

2 stars. This is a good book if you’re into the widower trope. Unfortunately, it’s not for me…and it’s especially not for me when the hero isn’t actually ready to have someone new in his life.

This hero is still deeply in love with his first wife. The whole book is full of thoughts about her, his love for her, his feelings of guilt over liking someone new. I highlighted a lot of his inner thoughts about his first wife, and they just made me wish that the story was written only from the heroine’s POV.

I never felt like the heroine was anything besides a sad replacement for his first love. 😢 And all that in a romance book - just doesn’t work for me. It’s wayyyyy too realistic for me, and that’s not what I personally enjoy.

He never really wanted to love the heroine, he tried to actively stop wanting her. His comments are frequent and often times brutal about his desire to be with his dead wife. I don’t think this hero was ready for love, and therefore, I never really fully bought into their love story.

The book otherwise was written pretty well… and I do think that if the widower element wasn’t so prevalent, I would have enjoyed it.

SWE, Hero still deeply in love with his dead first wife. He’s still in mourning for her, but can’t resist his pull towards the heroine. Hero has been celibate since before his first wife’s death. Heroine is recently (2 mo) out of a relationship with OM who does cause some drama. There’s no real OW drama but I felt like the first wife was a specter between them for the entire book. No cheating, no scenes with om/ow.

This is a sweet and simple romamce story. It starts with ONS then continue to awkward morning after in the OBGYN office where the doctor is Caroline's ONS. Then a dinner date where Caroline finds out her date is her new boss.

There is sweet banter between Carolina and Jonah. Their conversation is reflected a real courting conversation. Then on the climax, there is stalker gone mad.

What a wonderful and nice story. Its not OTT and its not cheesy. I wish there is more depth on the story and more on the character development.

Overall I enjoy this story OK.

Kararsız kaldığım bir kitap. Kötü değildi bunu biliyorum. Eğer detaylı düşünmezsem sevdiğimi bile söyleyebilirim. Karakterleri, olay örgüsü fena değildi. Okunabilir kesinlikle ...

Hatta sevdim ❤️

Halle bir hemşire. Yeni bir işin hazırlığı telaşesinde.Bilin bakalım yeni patronu kim? Jonah 🤭 Çalışanımla yatmam, aklım hâlâ eskide ama sen başkasın Halle diye diye geçiyor hikâye. Kötü değil okunur işte 🙈

I grabbed the Illicit boxset just to get this beauty. I'm a big fan of J.Saman and devour her books when they come out. This story was no exception.
It's a tale of love after loss, with gorgeous doctor Jonah a widow of a couple of years. He doesn't expect to find love again and it feels like a huge betrayal of his deceased wife when it creeps up on him.
Halle is definitely not seeking a relationship either. Her ex, a hacker, landed her in hot water and she's not about to fall lightly after being forced to find a new nursing job.
But the chemistry between this pair of medics can't keep them apart. Even when a huge conflict of interests rises between them.
One of the things I love best about Saman's writing is the excellent pacing. This story flowed, building up the connection between Jonah and Halle while delivering a page-turning plot.
The helplessness of the blooming love had me clutching my chest with heart pains (the good kind) and I so badly wanted this couple to work out.
If you haven't read any of this author's work, you're missing out.

Jonah and Halle.

I met the two in Doctor Scandalous by J. Saman, which I didn't realize I was supposed to read after I read this series. So here I am, righting my wrongs.

I liked it. I definitely didn't love it. There was too much extra writing for the story that was told. I would have liked it better if it was more compact.

Still, Halle was a nice character to get to know. And Jonah was equally enjoyable. The two meet in a bar where Halle's friend force her to get back in the game. And they choose Jonah specifically, for her to get back in the game.

I did like the plot itself, although I think the mystery could have been worked on. The book would have been further elevated then. Still, it was dealt with appropriately. The sequence of scenes was good.

I would 7 on 10 recommend to those who are looking for a pleasant and satisfying read. (Might be a bit triggering if you have survivor's guilt or have lost someone special and the pain in still sharp)

Catch you on the other side.

This one feels kinda average. He's a widow of 2 years and a doctor. And she has recently broke up with her boyfriend. He's a doctor and she's a NP.

“You want to know the ultimate white lie, Carolina?” I stare at him expectantly, but my brain is screaming at me to walk away. “That I didn’t find an incredible woman in a random bar in the middle of Boston when my heart was crushed into gravel and hers was formed into solid steel. That we’re not so absolutely right and yet so very wrong for each other. That I don’t want to say fuck it all to my carefully crafted rules.”

So, I’m one of those rare people who actually likes dead wife trope (mostly for its angsty potential)! This book had both MC’s pushing and pulling away and masking their feelings as much as possible. The problem with that is that there was no overt rejection. No one’s wearing their heart on their sleeve, so no gut punch. 😢

It could’ve been so good! 😭I also felt like the book dragged in places and I skimmed some.

I was introduced to J. Saman by reading the Boston’s Irresistible Billionaires series, and I’m such a mad fan that I have begun my journey through her back-catalogue.

This is the first book of The Edge series, and it’s a sweet, sexy, slightly angsty romance full of longing and fantastic chemistry, and I really enjoyed it.

Jonah and Halle meet at a bar one night when she approaches him on a dare. They end up spending a wild night together and in the morning they go their separate ways… until Halle rocks up to her new job as a nurse practitioner and discovers that Dr Jonah is her new boss. Jonah never gets involved with employees, so as drawn to each other as they may be, they agree to keep their one night stand a secret and be completely professional with each other. But that soon proves to be impossible.

“You want to know the ultimate while lie, Carolina?” I stare at him expectantly, but my brain is screaming at me to walk away. “That I didn’t find an incredible woman in a random bar in the middle of Boston when my heart was crushed into gravel and hers was formed into solid steel. That we’re not so absolutely right and yet so very wrong for each other. That I don’t want to say fuck it all to my carefully crafted rules.”

Oh, I loved the feels in this book! You have the angst of a forbidden relationship, which I love, but there is significant drama that they’re both dealing with that complicates their growing feelings for each other. Jonah is a widow. He is still grieving and very much in love with his wife, and never had any intention of moving on and becoming involved with anybody else. And Halle’s last relationship ended in disaster when her ex-boyfriend turned out to be a criminal hacker who landed her in a dangerous position with his enemies. She is closed off and protective of herself and is nowhere near ready to let somebody into her life again. There’s a lot of drama swirling around them, but in the middle of it all is the most beautiful, natural and honest love story as these two – despite their best intentions, fall madly for each other.

I love her. But this isn’t just love. This is what being in love feels like. This crazy, all-consuming rush. This powerful swell surging up from within me. This clenching of my chest and tightening in my stomach and smile across my face. This need for her to be mine. It’s not possession. It’s not claiming. It’s more than that. It’s knowing she’s my everything.

The chemistry simmers from the very beginning, but the love story feels like a slow burn as they carefully figure it all out. I loved the character development and the way they openly dealt with their issues while finding their way to each other, and I loved seeing these two get their HEA.

Such a gorgeous read, and I’m so excited to continue on with the series.

4 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Amy Melissa Bentley and Sean Hardisty, and it’s a good one to listen to.

“To nights we’ll never remember with people we’ll never forget.”

I did not see that coming.

This is the second book I’ve read by J. Saman and it was so good, I really enjoy her writing. I also loved the couple, their chemistry and specially the plot. It was such a fun read, the suspense wasn’t nothing special, and yet, angsty.

I am so excited to read the rest of the series.

Halle dumps her fiance, Matt, two days before he gets arrested by the FBI for hacking. Unfortunately for Halle, the FBI comes to her work and she got hauled in questioning.  Time to get a new job.   Just before she is about to start, her friends convince her to dip her toes into the menpool again which turns into a wild one night stand. Imagine her surprise when she finds out that Jonas, her fling, is now her boss.   Jonas didn't want anything but one night away from the pain of losing his wife two year before.  But Halle is not a forgettable type of woman.

The Edge of Temptation is about two people who aren't looking for love, one due to loss, one due to heartbreak is the perfect romance beach read.   With the right combination of relationship building, fun banter, and sexy action, this story is a low angst read that is sure to hold your attention beginning to end.

J. Saman's characters are developed in a very real way with Halle's need to find her balance after getting out of a ho hum relationship that ended with drama.  Halle is a level headed woman who has her life in order.  She is mature, smart, and funny.  Jonas is broken emotionally by the passing of his wife, a woman he loved and he hadn't thought of moving on.  Stuck in his memories and grief, he is a man who doesn't know how to let go and feels he is betraying his wife's memory.

There is a good amount of push and pull between Halle and Jonas as they fight fate, interesting side characters and J. Saman included a side plot of suspense when Halle starts getting followed, which added nicely to the story rounding out a well written and paced romance.

I'm usually not into the dead wife trope, but I decided to give this a try, and surprisingly, I ended up liking it.

Jonah lost his wife two years ago and is currently sitting in a random bar on the anniversary of her death, drowning his sorrows with alcohol when he meets Halle.

Halle has had a string of bad relationships and has sworn off men. But when her friends push her to get back in the game, if only for one night, she eventually relents and walks up to Jonah.

What was supposed to be a one-night stand gets complicated when Halle finds out that Jonah is her new boss at her new job in town. The two try to keep their distance, trying to remain professional and forget the chemistry they felt. Jonah is still stuck in his past, and Halle doesn't want to end up with the wrong person again.

I could feel the chemistry between these two from their first encounter, and I liked the ease with which the two got along. I liked Halle and her feeling awkward approaching Jonah, and I liked how Jonah put her at ease. I liked the banter and sweet and cute moments between Jonah and Halle.

There was a lot of push and pull from Jonah's end because of his past and the regrets, guilt, and grief he was holding onto. He felt like he was betraying his wife since she was his best friend and first love. The conflict he felt was understandable, and as the story progressed, we saw Jonah slowly make space for new love in his life. That shift happened over time, where he slowly starts letting go of that guilt he felt over moving on and wanting Halle. I just wish the shift had happened a bit faster.

I could also get Halle's perspective about how she was tired of falling for the wrong men and didn't want to dive headfirst into this with Jonah, especially knowing his past and his feelings for his dead wife. But at the same time, she couldn't help but get attached to Jonah after spending all that time with him when things felt so right and easy. She did have conflicted feelings about it when her feelings got too real, and that was definitely a little heartbreaking for her when all she wanted was for someone to choose her.

I do wish there was a bit more of a show than a tell. I liked the two together, and there were conversations and moments between them that showed the development in their relationship, but I wish certain topics were discussed on the page. Like the reason why Jonah felt guilty over his wife's death and why he felt like he deserved to be alone and suffer. And if we'd gotten a little more insight into Halle's past, her parents, and how the loss had impacted her.

I enjoyed the spice a lot in this. Something to do with the British accent in the audiobook that worked wonders for me. Especially every time he called her 'love'. *Swoon* And with all that dirty talk?? I was a goner.

I loved the girl gang in this book right from the start. They were all so supportive, called each other out on their bullshit, didn't judge, and were always there for each other no matter what. Even when they all knew things might not end well with Jonah, they didn't make Halle feel weird or dumb for being with him. They hoped for the best for her, but were also ready to support her through it if things didn't work out.

I liked the side plot of someone stalking Halle and how all that played out. Although it wasn't too deep or all that surprising. However, that situation towards the end kind of felt like the push Jonah needed in a way.

Definitely excited to read the rest of the series.

Ok, vem da more bit mal drame in napetosti, sam to me je res zmotl 🤷🏼‍♀️

I did liked it and the narrators did a really good job, but i don't think it was very memorable.
I appreciated how open both the hero and the heroine were with each other. But the heroine really annoyed me when she was always jumping to conclusions about how he was not there for the long run, especially because i feel like she was the one always stating t. I know that she was afraid of being hurt, but damn girl easy there, he was totally smitten with you he just needed time to come to terms that it was okay for him to love another person and be happy after is wife died. And you guys had known each other for just 1 month...
Anyway, i'm defenitly interested in reading more from this author.

So good that I tore through this bad boy in a few hours. Halle and her friends are done with her "anti-man" ways and convince her to go talk to the sad, sexy man at the bar. So who would think these two set the stage for a page-turner full of more obstacles than the Olympics, sex that caused smoke to come out of my reader and two characters who feel so genuine even though both are dealing with their own issues.

Jonah will own your panties. Even with the loss of his wife and thinking that he'll never love again, what he goes through for Halle and the force of love and protection, will have you feeling hotter than a snowman in the desert.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.

This book manages to run the gamut of emotions. From funny, emotional, grief, awkward to action and drama.

Halle just broke up with Matt, a hacker. Her friends push her to hit on a random guy.
So she does, awkwardly.
On Jonah.

Jonah lost Madeline, his love two years ago and has not been able to move on. He’s at the bar on the two year anniversary of her passing, looking for oblivion.

Instead Halle finds him and he laughs and feels that spark again.

But there’s plenty of drama with her ex Matt.
Recommend.

So good. I read this in one sitting. It doesnt happen often that you meet a person and feel that connection that you cant explain but it feels right. Been there before and its wonderful. You have to read this book. It really makes you think about what makes you happy and actually doing it. They were both in a emotional wheel that didnt stop until they hit the brakes. Life does that to you and then laughs at you when you finally get the joke.

Wounded Hearts

Halle is still in her post breakup hate men phase when her friends bribe her to strike up a conversation with the sexy broody guy at the bar. Jonah lost his wife to cancer and isn't sure he'll ever have room for another love. Neither one looking for a serious relationship. Then surprisingly Halle ends up working for Jonah and their instant connection is hard to break. Throw in some exboyfriend drama and some steamy scenes and this book was a great quick paced read.

The Edge of Temptation was FABULOUS! Halle and Jonah's one-night stand, office romance is sexy, sweet and thoroughly entertaining. It's written in dual POV and you can feel the uncertainly and angst that's inherent in this couples romance. Jonah is a widow finding himself captivated for the first time since he lost his wife. The heartbreak is real and well written. I read this in one sitting and highly recommend.

The Story That Would NEVER START

I mean these people think too much. Chapter five and it still hasn't started and is repetitive. Every miniscule detail of both their thoughts are painstakingly detailed. It's ridiculous!

It's unfortunate because it seems so Interesting. I also was offended by this author describing brown eyes as DIRT! Female had eyes like the sky of course. Male had green Jade eyes like grass so I guess she was on a nature trip or just ignorant enough to think that was okay.

DIRT! BROWN EYES ARE DIRT REALLY! Racist much? I already get tired of the blond blue eye obsession, where author repeats it fifty or more times in a story but this, wow just wow.

This was a really great book. I loved that there was a real plot and it wasn't just about sex, which I was afraid of upon seeing the cover. I got this book through my monthly Romance Book Box, so I wasn't to sure what to expect. It was so much better than I hoped, it's four stars because it really could have been longer. I feel like the books pacing was a bit rushed and there's some family dynamics I wish were shown and not just told. Overall though, would recommend :)
