God's Word for You

John 13-21 For You: Revealing the Way of True Glory

Rate this book
Expository Bible-study guide to the second half of John’s Gospel, showing how the surprising glory of the cross transforms Jesus’ followers. Josh Moody takes readers to the upper room with the disciples, to the cross with the Lord Jesus, and on to the empty tomb and the shores of Lake Galilee, showing at each point how gazing at the surprising glory of the God of the cross transforms his followers. This Expository Guide takes you verse by verse through the text in an accessible and applied way. It is less academic than a traditional commentary and can be read cover-to-cover, used in personal devotions, used to lead small group studies, or used for sermon preparation.

Always enjoy this series. Though the sections are a bit long for a short morning devotional, so I started reading just half a one each time.

This Easter it was difficult for me to feel real emotion. Worshiping at home and missing my local church is just not the same. I sometimes feel like my eyes have been covered, and we are all just in a state of drowsy sleep. In John 13-21 For You, Josh Moody helps us see God in all of his glory in the Gospel of John.

God’s Word For You

God’s Word For You is a series of books by The Good Book Company that seeks to take you to the heart of a book of the Bible and apply its truth to your heart. They attempt to be Bible-centered, Christ-glorifying, relevantly applied, and easily readable. I found this to be especially true of John 13-21 For You.

This volume was written by Josh Moody, Senior Pastor of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and President of God Centered Life Ministries. These roles are appreciated, as he helps us see the profound power and humble love that exemplify Christ in his death and resurrection.

Guide

In less than 200 pages, Moody gives us a guided tour of the book of John. We receive the promise fo the Holy Spirit, we feel the power behind Jesus saying that his kingdom is not of this world, and we are filled with joy at his resurrected appearing.

As is fitting for our current situation of COVID-19, Moody helps us see the importance of the resurrection and what it means for us to live in light of it. The themes of sacrifice and dying to ourselves take on new meaning when we think about how it applies to us during these difficult days.

Resource

What I appreciate most about this book series is the number of resources it has to offer. While it acts as a commentary, it can also be read as a devotional. Each section concludes with questions for reflection. These are usually personal application questions that are perfect for a small group study or Sunday School class.

There is a glossary at the back of the book with words that are specifically related to the book of John. These terms include doctrine, firstfruits, regenerated, and sanctified. I received this book and John 1-12 as a set - and I highly recommend reading both to grasp the full picture of John’s Gospel.

Passion

The Gospel of John ends with Jesus asking Peter if he loves him. There is a focus on love, feeding God’s sheep, and following Christ. It is a call to all of us as Christians, and when we see Jesus in his glory through the Bible and from this book, we are empowered to do the same.
