Star Stories: Constellations and People

Rate this book
Follow an epic animal race, a quest for a disembodied hand, and an emu egg hunt in constellation stories from diverse cultures

We can see love, betrayal, and friendship in the heavens, if we know where to look. A world expert on cultural understandings of cosmology, Anthony Aveni provides an unconventional atlas of the night sky, introducing readers to tales beloved for generations. The constellations included are not only your typical Greek and Roman myths, but star patterns conceived by a host of cultures, non-Western and indigenous, ancient and contemporary.

The sky has long served as a template for telling stories about the meaning of life. People have looked for likenesses between the domains of heaven and earth to help marry the unfamiliar above to the quotidian below. Perfect reading for all sky watchers and storytellers, this book is an essential complement to Western mythologies, showing how the confluence of the natural world and culture of heavenly observers can produce a variety of tales about the shapes in the sky.

Interesting topic, but very dry text. Explores the stories behind different cultures interpretations of the constellations. Orion, the Pleiades, Milky Way, the Chinese Zodiac and more. While informative, more like a textbook than just for casual reading.

Pikka sissejuhatust pole, vaid autor hüppab kohe lugudesse. Teos on üsna loogiliselt üles ehitatud, korjates lood teemade kaupa kokku.

See on järjekordne näide loodusest kaugenemisest.

Jah, need samad, millest on inspireeritud Lucinda Riley raamatusari.

"Tähelood" toob kokku erinevate rahvaste lood, legendid ja müüdid, mida jutustati tähtedest. Mulle see raamat meeldis. Kõige mõnusam oligi just selle kultuuriline mitmekesisus.

The amount of research that must have gone into this book is impressive. In addition to the myths familiar to Western Civilization, this book covers the myths associated with China, the Middle East, Native American tribes (including the ancient Maya, Aztec, and Incan civilizations), Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii, and Polynesia. There aren’t many illustrations, which is a shame, but it does leave the stories to stand mostly on their own without the reader feeling like they need to “see” the images in the stars first.

Apparently Orion and Orion’s Belt were popular star patterns, as were the Pleiades. There is also a chapter covering zodiacs. I never knew creation of the Chinese 12-year zodiac was based on a race, but suddenly the Jade Serpent, Black Ox, White Tiger, and Red Crane in World of Warcraft have so much more depth. The concept of the Milky Way as a river or road was also very popular, although some cultures saw groups of animals moving through the sky and other things. It’s such a shame light pollution renders it so difficult to see in modern times. The chapter on dark cloud constellations reminds me of cloud watching with my older relations, picking out shapes and using our imaginations. If the Milky Way was more visible today, I wonder if I would have found my own shapes there, too? Given the stories all come from the Southern Hemisphere, probably not, but it does make me yearn for dark skies so I try it. The chapters about polar and tropical constellations make sense in the context of the cultures of those regions, and it was nice to have them gathered together to make that point even clearer. The discussion of navigation in the tropics is fascinating, but doesn’t go into anywhere near enough detail that I think I understand how they did it. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, including star ceilings (essentially an overhead map of the sky), mega-constellations (filling the entire sky and dwarfing Argo Navis), and an interesting discussion on gender (Greco-Roman myths are decidedly misogynistic, but they weren’t the only ones).

Overall, the book is very readable, but densely written. You won’t whip through this as quickly as you would another non-fiction book of the same length, because there’s so much information packed into each paragraph that it takes a little longer to digest. The author has other books in the areas of archaeoastronomy and cultural astronomy, so I’ll have to see if I can locate copies of those, as well.

Mind on juba lapsepõlvest saadik lummanud tähine öötaevas.

See on seal täitsa olemas. Luban.

Anthony Aveni has skilfully woven together celestial stories and legends from a variety of cultures to provide the reader with a roadmap to the sky. He explains the impact that the constellations made on human behaviour throughout historical periods.

'The sky, too, has long been a canvas for telling stories about the meaning of life... Our contact with the sky humanised us. It encouraged us to use our imaginations to tell stories about who we are.'

Star Stories is inclusive of non-Western, indigenous, ancient and contemporary stories and acts as a lovely accompaniment to Western star stories and mythologies.
From the Greek and Roman myths to the Aboriginal People and their Dreamtime stories, Aveni presents a host of culturally diverse stories about the shapes in our night sky.
Whilst detailing mythological stories linked to the skies above us, this book also outlines constellation impact on farming, navigation, hours in our day, seasons and zodiacs.

A shallow dive into some of our most common constellations viewed from both the northern and southern hemisphere which provide a connotation and understanding of our world through stories passed down in generations from a multitude of cultures.

Written by a world expert in Astronomy, each reader will be transported into the starry night to feel and discover these generational stories about our constellations.

I enjoyed the book, and only wish it had more illustrations/maps to support the text. For example, in the fascinating section on the beliefs of the people of the high Andes, we hear about a creator storm god who was said to have arisen from Lake Titicaca, crossed over the sky, and entered the sea off the coast of Ecuador. It would help a lot to know that we are talking about a region lying along the line that runs southeast-to-northwest between the lake and the sea. (My knowledge of geography of this part of the world is lacking, but I'm probably not the only one.) Later we learn that during the dry season, the Milky Way runs northeast to southwest, but that "during the rainy season, the path runs southeast to northwest, and aligns with the Vilcanota River at either end, sending the heavenly water back to earth." It is neat how this rainy-season alignment has led to an idea of the Milky Way as a celestial river, connecting with the Vilcanota, but you have to be able to visualize all these directions in your head. And if you look up Rio Vilcanota, it is hard to find a map showing it, because it is the upper part of the better-known Urubamba. The book is otherwise easy to read, and a family member who has no knowledge of astronomy enjoyed it.

A great read. Aveni does an excellent and thorough job of presenting an overview of global constellation myths. What I particularly love about Aveni is his respect and love for the yarns we spin to help us understand our world. To him, science and knowledge keeping are the same in that they are both ways of explaining the unexplained. I think he does a really beautiful job of describing differing epistemologies in a way that is respectful and unbiased- no star story is more "true" than another. This book is a really great starting off point if you want to get into cultural or archaeo- astronomy.

Amazing book for learning more about the stories of stars and constellations from cultures more than just Greco-Roman. It is a very interesting read, though a bit densely packed, it took me quite a while to get through despite how fascinating the subject matter was. The book touches on stories from across all continents (minus Antarctica) and gives a good perspective on how stories differ across regions and which stars are visible across different latitudes. I really appreciated the diversity in the stories from this book, it was very nice to hear about stories of the stars outside of Greek and Roman mythology.

Typically, I am not a reviewer, but I had to come here to rave about Aveni’s writing. I am using this book as my main reference text in my research report for a class, and the material in here was so accessible, well written, and fun to read. If you enjoyed Stephen Fry’s Great Mythology series, I would pick this up. Without a doubt, as a treat for myself, I will be reading Creation Stories, his other book. Anthony Aveni, thank you so much for this wonderful book!

(Sorry about the grammar cuz I'm a Vietnamese reader)
This book is just fine. I see the richness of information in this but maybe because of my lacking in astrology and geography knowledge, i cant digest the information. They just slipped away like i havent read it yet 😭. I did enjoy all the myths and stories included, they were quite interesting and easy to understand. It's fine but never again would i pick an astrology book to my daily reading.

A soulful book about the stories that humans tell about the stars. While modern astronomers may dismiss ancients stories about stars as childlike attempts to explain natural phenomena, Aveni
reminds us that those star stories tell us more about who we are and what it means to be human than about the stars that they are meant to describe.
