From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler:
Ankarette Tryneowy is now the best poisoner in all the lands. Feared by enemies abroad and even those in her own kingdom, she has risen to the pinnacles of power and influence at the court in Kingfountain.
But when news comes that the rival of the Queen is dead, Ankarette must go on her most dangerous mission yet. To prove whether a war of succession fought years before is truly over or whether a new threat is about to emerge from the shadows. For some will stop at nothing to satisfy their thirst for revenge, even if they must reach beyond the grave to do it.
Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler took an early retirement from his career at Intel in 2014 to write full-time. He is a husband, father of five, and a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jeff lives in the Rocky Mountains.
First Jeff Wheeler is one of my favorite authors and it surprised me that this little 52 page novella was short and left some unanswered questions. When did she kill the kings brothers wife that let to her supposedly being put into the falls? And when did the King order her to kill his brother? There are more questions for which don't have any answers and where they could have been explained and make this more of a book than a little Novella.
The majority of the second novel dealt with Ankarette and John getting together. Then? Nothing. Not a hint or mention. I love this character and would follow her anywhere. But this omission of her love interest and switch back to wanting Thomas Mortimer seems unworthy of Ankarette. Like you’re planning to reconnect them after he stupidly threw her away. Especially since she’s still protecting the Queen while slowly dying.
At the end of novel 2, she was setting up a little cottage for herself near John. The King and Queen knew about them. Then, POOF! Really frustrating to have such a great character vanish.
52 pages? I bought an entire book and got only 52 pages, with an up in the air ending? No resolution?? I love the Kingfountain series, and have now read them all. This, however, was disappointing in how it ended. Great story, satisfying as far as it went…but only 52 pages? It would have served better as the epilogue to the 3rd one in this series, The Maid’s War. But even then it a bit flat either way with such an abrupt ending. Unfinished. Disappointing gimmick, although I appreciate the background to a couple of events with which it provided me.
Not as intricate or compelling as his other books in this series. Waited months for this very short book...😕😞I am very disappointed by this newest book. What happened, Jeff?
It's just ok. About the time I got into the characters,it was over. A disappointing read. I was following Me Wheeler so I know I must have read something in the past that made me want to follow him.
This was a very short story, but it was extremely beneficial in giving out information to help us better understand certain circumstances in the Kingfountain world. Now, I admit that I went about things all wrong. I had already read most of the Kingfountain series and a couple of the Poisoner spinoffs when I realized that I had missed a couple of books and that Mr. Wheeler had also written a new entry in the series.
For some reason, it is a huge pet peeve of mine to read things out of order and I truly read this COMPLETELY out of order. This is the last entry (to this date) in the Poisoner spin off before we then dive into the main books starting with The Queen's Poisoner. I enjoyed this short story, and it was packed full of info. The bad thing was that it had been so long since I had read The Queens Poisoner that part of me wanted to keep going and reread the series since I now had all of the new back story. But...alas, I can not because there are so many new books to read.
I am curious however about how Ankarette Tryneowy dealt with the poison issue that occurs from Lord Hux. I honestly can not remember and it is kind of driving me crazy. Oh well.
This book was a delightful insight into a different side of Ankarette, and one that filled more of the holes in the tapestry of her life. Having now read all of the Kingfountain series, I'm impressed by the links to the history of my country, obvious when you read the author's notes, but so wrapped in the plot and world of Kingfountain that I don't notice them until then. A fantastic author, and a series I shall be recommending far and wide.
I don't understand how anyone can be disappointed in these revelations. I was thrilled by the insight into the Queen's Poisoner. It filled in a lot of the gaps. I solute you, Jeff WHEELER, you are masterfull. Indeed, the Supreme Aldermaston! I can't wait to read the remaining 4 books of the Ransom Series.
I've read 19 WHEELER books in about a week and a half. Totally absorbed in Kingfountain.
Love most things by this favorite author, but this short conclusion(52 pages) to an otherwise great series didn’t work for me. It felt under developed and unfinished, leaving a lot of unanswered questions. I appreciate his taking inspiration for many of his works from actual historic events, but I would suggest he doesn’t write this kind of segment/story in the future.
Jeff Wheeler's Kingfountain series is absolutely the gold standard of fantasy that reflects royal intrigue and life in lands that absolutely captivate the reader. This is another prequel. Be sure to read the prequels before reading the series proper. I wish this series went on and on !
This a a short story that fills in some of the big picture that is the Kingfountain series. Though short, it is packed with insight into the events taking place leading the changes in kingship in kingfountain. It is also the story of the final play between Ankarette and Hux.
Reading about Ankarette is always awesome. A short work that kind of bridges the gap between Poisoner's Enemy and The Queen's Poisoner. The biggest drawback is that it is not enough. It doesn't really give us more insight into who Ankarette was. She impresses as she always does, but it is not enough. A collector's item.
This is a short prequel to the Kingfountain series which gives the back story of the Queen's Poisoner that figures so prominently in the early part of the series. I like the author's note because he is an avid history buff and a lot of our world history shows up in his plots. Again I saw veiled references to scriptures. I am not certain why the author would not also comment on this.
If you haven't read the Kingfountain series yet, and you love fantasy fiction, this series is wonderful! Heavily influenced by the War of Roses in Europe, it deals more with intrigue and uses magic as the vehicle to weave a tale that will keep you moving through the story to the very end. This story is a perfect bite to show you Jeff's world as a prequel to the novel The Queen's Poisoner.
Another excellent tale by the masterful author, Jeff Wheeler. Ankarette, on Eredur's Orders goes to Occitania to prove whether Queen Moraved is truly dead. Once there, everything spirals out of control. I highly recommend this book for all ages above 13.
A quick read to wrap up Ankarette's story before she becomes a secondary character in the Kingfountain series this is a prequel to. Overall a good story but it was a bit rushed and left a few questions unanswered. Like what happened to John? I loved their chemistry and wanted to see that explored more.
This book was super short! Ended so abruptly I didn’t even realise it was the end. While she did get her revenge it ended on a cliffhanger which I wasn’t expecting since i was hoping for some closure. I remember Ankarette appearing in the next Kingfountain series though… so on to the next series of 6 books.
As with all of Jeff Wheeler's books and stories they are page turners and you don't want to stop reading them until you have finished reading the last page.
A short chapter in the life of a resourceful woman whose role I had come to appreciate as Owen K.'s mentor and beloved friend in the first Kingfountain book. Good details as an addition to a great series.
Well written conclusion to Ankarette's story, this novella fills in the gaps and explains how Ankarette sought revenge on Lord Hux and King Lewis, and explains why she died in the original Kingfountain series.
I really enjoy the story's of Ankarette. Kingfountain series was the first books I read. I can always do with more on Ankarette what a great character. Thanks for the short story. Next time make it alttle longer.
I have always enjoyed Jeff Wheelers work and this story is no different. My only complaint is , it's to short. Well written, strong characters and It is active to the last page. This series is excellent.
Jeff Wheeler’s Kingfountain series is gold. Pure, utter, gold, and this was no less. Yes it is short, but I felt it was a nice way to wrap up Ankarettes story. Read it if you love his writing and this series.
A short ditty which reveals a tiny bit more of the poisoners story. I’m reading them all out of order which bothers me. I wish I’d known there were other bits before I’d started so I could read them in order! It’s hard work keeping all the storylines in place
More of Ankarette's back story laced with intregue and disaster. Not the happy end I was hoping for but as I had read the series this book is the prequel to I more or less knew that
Having read all Kings Fountain books, I am happy to have had all the blanks filled in. Knowing what comes next, it is sad that there is no cure for Ankarette
I Loved this series and how some of his other books connect. Such a great story tell and world builder. I loved that these where clean books that didn't have to turn trashy to have a great storyline! The audio books where also amazing!
for some time. I've wanted to know more about the queen's poisoner. These two novellas have been a great look into who she is and how she came to be. I want more of her story!
