Starfire #2

Murder at the Ostrich Farm

Rate this book
Poppy Starfire is looking forward to a summer outing at Dawson Ostrich Farm with two of her favorite people, her brother Jasper and her dad. The day starts out well enough with souvenir shopping, cold lemonades and, of course, plenty of ostriches. But when one of the farm visitors is found strangled to death, the fun-filled visit takes a grim turn.

When evidence and quick conclusions lead to an arrest, Ruby Dawson, the farm owner's daughter comes to the Starfire Detective Agency for help. Miss Dawson is certain the police have the wrong man and she hopes Poppy and Jasper can find the real killer. The Starfire investigators soon find themselves surrounded with motives, possible suspects, scant evidence and, of all things, ostriches.

Note: This is book two of the Starfire Cozy Mystery Series and I have found it is better to read them in order, however they can be read as a standalone as well. This is a historical series set in the 1920's and is really great to read.

Poppy Starfire has looked forward to visiting the Dawson Ostrich Farm, along with her brother Jasper and her Dad, a retired Doctor. They head to Pasadena and are excited to get there. There are so many things to see and especially the Ostriches!

Poppy is the owner of The Starfire Detective Agency left to her by her uncle, and her brother Jasper works with her. They have solved a couple of good cases and look forward to more.

While they are having fun at the Ostrich Farm a couple of events occur that they see for themselves, one being a worker, Paul, being accused of manhandling a guest, a rich fat widow, that would have fallen out of a cart had he not chivalrously helped her, and two, the murder of said widow, though they did not see that.

The next day Ruby Dawson comes to their agency as she thinks that Paul is being framed for a murder he did not commit and is now sitting in jail. Paul is Ruby's fiance and she can't believe what has happened. They agree to take the case.

After visiting the site again they get to talk with some of the staff, and they all thought Paul was getting framed as well, and a list of other ideas, suspects, and not too much evidence to go on.

There is another murder of another worker two days later that makes Poppy, know that all is not right at the Ostrich Farm, and gets enough of a clue to see what she missed.

The book is well written, great suspense, I have to say the characters are all very well developed and I liked seeing Poppy, her brother and Dad, along with Poppy's neighbor Mrs. Dewberry who is a recluse. However, she is thrilled with the little notes Poppy slips in her mailbox every morning, as well as the bird feeders that Poppy's Dad made for Poppy and Mrs. Dewberry.

I loved the way this mystery turned out and can't wait for more! I gave this book 5*****stars!

Thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the Starfire Detective Agency series. I always enjoy books featuring different historical periods, and the Starfire books are set in the 1920's. Wealthy Mrs. Freemont-Keeler, Pasadena socialite, is murdered while on an outing to Dawson's Ostrich Farm. The police have arrested farm hand Paul Wilkins. Despite an array of circumstantial evidence, his fiancee, Ruby Dawson, daughter of the farm's owner, just can't believe he could be a killer. She hires the Starfire Agency to investigate and Poppy Starfire must find the facts to clear Paul. It's a fun read. Poppy attracts all the derision you would expect a woman working as a detective to get in the '20's (or even now). She's also wondering about the feelings her budding attraction to Kellen are stirring up. Then there is the the friendship with Mrs. Dewberry, her neighbor, she is working to grow. It's a charming book with a decent mystery at it's core surrounded by believable interpersonal relationships and nice period detail. I recommend it for light, fun reading.

I enjoyed this second installment in the Starfire Cozy mystery series. Poppy is a great protagonist, she is smart and sweet and an all around good person. The historical setting is well done and I loved that the author had the murder at the unusual setting of an ostrich farm. Although the mystery was well done it was pretty easy to figure out. Still overall I quite enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

This book is such a fun read! I enjoyed it immensely! Such a fun mystery that gives you so many clues along the way to deduct and reason away who you think is the murderer! Characters are fun and well developed. This is book #2 in the series, I highly recommend reading in order as the characters build with each book. Looking forward to more in this series.

Loved the story. The characters are filling out very nicely. Poppy and Jasper are becoming quite good detectives. And I love Poppys' interaction with her neighbor through her letters. I'm excited to see what murder they have to solve next, and will Poppy get her neighbor to come outside?
We shall see how that friendship develops, I'm sure. On to the next installment of the Starfire mysteries.

Such a cute book! The setting at an ostrich farm was very unique and I even thought Egor might have been the murderer for a hot second!

As usual, the characters are fun and the story is always entertaining. Can’t wait to read the others 🙌

A nice story that might have gotten 5 stars except that who the killer was was too obvious.
