The Hook. Pick and Lens trilogy is an exploration of teens growing through their experiences and relationships. What sets this trilogy apart is that Matt and his half-sister, Lara, live in an unconventional relationship - with two mothers, their shared father having died in a car accident. The influence of that unconventional family background feeds into Matt and Lara's relationship and also into their relationships with others. Matt has fallen deeply in love with Heather who lives many hours drive away. Lara's very close relationship with her half-brother leads to moves to include her in Matt and Heather's relationship, but this is put on hold by the arrival of an Irish brother and sister, visiting for six months on an international school exchange program.

The characters are beautifully drawn through their words, actions and inter-relationships. This story has great joy but has some very dark moments. Events, for which they must take some responsibility, and personal discoveries challenge Matt, Lara and Heather and those around them.

Through the author's excellent writing, it is easy to take these characters into your heart - even when their thoughts and actions are less than wonderful.

This is a long book - and the trilogy itself is huge. However, if I could give it more than five stars. I would do so. I have grown through reading this book (and the rest of the trilogy) and I suspect most readers will do so.
