Analyzes the development and social significance of the myth in Grecian society in addition to describing the exploits and physical attributes of individual gods and heroes.
Overall a pretty enjoyable book. I enjoyed the author's use of photos and historical artifacts to support their claims and enhance the reading experience, it made the reading more enjoyable and exciting. The book focuses of Greek Mythology, this makes the book intriguing in it's own way, not only does the author help the reader understand the mythology, he also relates it to current terms. Something that I found impressive, was the author's ability to describe an image, "Opposite right, Heracles with his family. The decorations are oil-flasks are often either sepulchral or domestic, reflecting their two chief uses. The genre scene of the son reaching out for his father from his mother's lap is given piquancy by the application to Heracles, not the most domestic of heroes" (Pinsent 83). What this showed me was the relation between the image, and the myths, this is an important distinction to help the reader. In conclusion, for me this book was a really good read and helpful for me to learn more about Greek Mythology, though I do not know if everyone would enjoy the book in the way I did.
Greek mythology has been around for a very long time, Greek mythology is the religion of what the Greek people believed in but seeing into it now it's a fascinating topic. There are many gods in the belief of them there are Zeus and hera witch are the two gods that brought life to other gods like there children Ares, Aphrodite, Athena, Atremis, Apollo, Hermes and you also have the brothers of Zeus such as Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Hestia. The last location was Mount Olympus when they were “alive”. They were praised as god-like beings because well they were but they had a religion like this because they believed certain seasons and the earth was controlled by gods and goddesses that protected the civilians and the Spartans. The author of this book is John Pinsent and he made some other mythological books like the Romans and the vikings but besides that i rate the book 8/10 because it was boring at a few parts but still a good way to learn about the myths of Greece.
For a pocket guide I found this really hard going and it took many short bursts to get through. You really need to have advanced knowledge of the myths and legends of Ancient Greece to get anything out of the text as it’s so brief and sketchy.
It's a good book if you have background knowledge of Greek mythology. The myths and figures are presented quite logically throughout the book, though there are "side myths" that are thrown in between, or that kind of interrupt the main story being told. This can get a bit confusing and can sidetrack you, but otherwise, if you stay concentrated and are able to discern what is more/ less important for you, you'll find the book satisfying, especially when it comes to the quantity and quality of visual examples.
This book was by John Pinsent. The author intended to show what the meaning of what life meant and looked like to the Greeks. He greatly explained how each story applied to how things work in the world through their view. I liked reading the stories and what they imply to. I do recommend this book to those who like to learn about other cultures/religions.
Saw this recently online and remembered that I loved reading this in junior high. I'd borrow from the school library and read over and over. Was fascinated by the Greek and Roman gods as a tween. I was such a nerd.
