Jimmy Bhatia and his friends are your typical young engineers turned IT (un)professionals, stuck in the rat race with no end. They drink, smoke and diss about their managers and leads. Until Jimmy finds a little escape in the form of ‘The Club.’ But when does the universe ever lets you rest and escape? It’s 2008, and the recession hits the economy! Jimmy’s friends lose their job and one by one he starts losing them too. Now it’s up to Jimmy and a few other IT guys to take a stand against the injustice. Their enemy, a bone-crushing white collar job and the depressing corporate slavery environment! But can a few IT guys change how the world works? A story of revolt against the whole industry, this book deals with the youth, their hopes and dreams, friendship, heartbreaks, addiction, suppressed anger, death and a dangerous idea of annihilation! Assignment Destruction: Story of a few IT guys, is a gripping narration of revolution and self-discovery.
Assignment Destruction. ~ This is the era of 9 to 6 jobs where students move from college to work in IT and finance firms, often killing their dreams of becoming a writer or an artist. Our minds are conditioned from childhood that Engineers and Doctors are the know-it-alls and if you study the course, your life is set. They couldn't be more wrong and we realise it only once we start spending our lives behind desk jobs for years. Assignment Destruction is one such book which talks about the lives of IT professionals. ~ The story is about Jimmy and his friends who all work for IT firms and are somehow getting by each day. Working under an ignorant boss, heading to work on weekends, clocking in 13 hours of work everyday ; this book talks about the fate of young generation who are trapped within a cubicle. The story is real for the most part where the author is completely honest about today's work life. Jimmy's life is full of action, drama, romance and also quite filmy. Jimmy discovers a club where people gather to have fun and show their creative sides which are mostly hidden under their boring corporate faces. It seemed very much like The Fight Club, a movie which is one of my favourites. ~ However, I did find the story a little shallow and also couldn't help but notice references to causal sexism. The author says 'The whole world economy was down. Just like a teenage girl on her periods' and 'He was a downer, a negative nancy, a cynic, a woman going through menopause'. This was disturbing and not even the least bit funny. There were few grammatical mistakes as well. I have stressed about how casual sexism and statements that are insulting are being taken lightly and this book falls under the same category. The plot was unique, all it missed was a good execution. ~ Rating - 2/5.
'We can either blame our pathetic lives on our parents, society, the education system, this country or we can accept the fact that no one else but us alone are the masters of our lives and whether it turns out to be good or pathetic is solely based on the decisions that we make.'
'Assignment Destruction' is a story of few IT guys who are stuck in their '9-6' or' 9 - forever ' jobs and finds it difficult to break out from that rat trap. We are taught from our childhood that we should be scoring good grades in our 10th , 12th and graduation and then get a good job. Some people may be genuinely interested in IT but all the other just land there some how because they didn't get a job of there choice or are not capable enough to pursue what they actually wanted. This is what we can see in this book through many characters .Jimmy Bhatia is the protagonist of the story. But all the characters have there own importance.
The characterization of most of the characters were good. But what i didn't like is that the female characters played no role except for playing the love interest or some other kind of interests. They should have given little more importance in the story. The plot is really good and Author was able to cleverly merge in with some of the major economic slow downs, scams(i liked the reference of the company which rhymes with 'Natyam' :P) and some of the shocking events happened at that point of time.
The story has a very slow pace in the first half but speeds up and gets thrilling in the second half. A lot of characters and story inside story adds to its content and makes it more interesting. I may recommend this book to everybody except kids because it has a lot of abuses, cuss words and inappropriate stuff for them. For others it will be surely a fun read.
The story is about Jimmy and his friends, who work 9 to 6 in an IT service company. They are the kind of employees, we see in metro and bus, the kind of people who wear formals to impress their bosses, and we can see only one expression on their faces, that is anguish & frustration, they people we generally call Engineers. So Jimmy and his friends are working their asses off, without any breaks or promotions. But, one day their lives turn when they came to know about “THE CLUB”, where a bunch of engineers meet and organize parties, drinks, dance, stand up comedy, basically everything to forget about their workload. Jimmy and Rohan (one of Jimmy's friend) join this group to relax a bit, but amidst all this the country goes in the depths of a recession. How will they deal with these hard times? They have many dreams, just like every youth, but the question is, will they ever live a life they desire? Read the book to know these answers.
The book deals with the frustration of employees working in corporate Industry, the work load and their unsatisfactory salary.
**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** Book Review Assignment Destruction Mayank Sehgal. Published by papertownsindia. Jimmy and Rohan, friends from college, end up in poorly paying but pressurized systems on IT companies, where oiling and sexual favours get you ahead than your work. Their relief comes in terms of their induction into a clandestine society called "The Club" , a place where these professionals unwinded in curious ways! The rest of the story is a timeline of how their life goes haywire, when Rohan is sacked and recession hits India to lead to mass laying of. Rohan goes missing, the speaker of the book, the unknown I starts staying with Jimmy and sameer and anan, while some of them attempt suicide and go berserk at these kay offs. The clubs so designated leader Ram plans the assignment destruction, a mass destruction of the IT company servers, in a Rang de Basanti style (thats what it reminded me of) bombing that kills jimmy! The closure is what you must read this book to find out. I liked the bit where shweta loses jimmy and jimmy loses julia! The karma cycle, so to say. The life is recognisable with that of young professionals staying away from homes, trying to make their marks and also wanting to live their dreams! Love, lust, friendship, bikes, parties, hostels, job worries, family backgrounds all mix into this relatable book. 3/5* Two negative points: needed better proofreading, there are gender mixes and spacing errors throughout the book. And a monotonous tone in the middle part. Also dear author, I read the acknowledgements, contrary to your believes and they are heartfelt! @thebookoholics thanks for the review copy! #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookblogging📚 #bookstagram #bookbloggersofig #bookstagramkolkata #bookstagrammers #unitedbookstagramindia #Book_review #readbooks #books📚
I was quite surprised with the direction the story headed. It starts out with two IT professionals, Jimmy and Rohan, cribbing about their jobs and then them joining a secret club named The Club that carries on secret adventure-like missions and then Rohan losing his job and then a series of unfortunate events.
The turn of events in the story are totally unexpected and that's what makes the book interesting. In one moment Rohan and Jimmy are fooling around, cracking jokes about their heads and their pathetic and boring lives, and the next moment there's angst and major drama and everything turns gloomy and serious. This made it extremely difficult for me to restrict the book to just one genre.
There is heavy usage of modern slang in the book that some might not like, but otherwise the book has its share of humour, drama and action. Though, the first part of the story shows the fun side of Jimmy, our protagonist, the second part shows Jimmy's life going topsy-turvy after his best friend goes missing. The way the author has portrayed Jimmy's coping mechanism in the hectic Indian IT sector, makes the story very realistic. His relationship with his other friends and the Fight Club members and their pov about taking revenge on the IT companies for laying off employees makes the book an interesting read.
It's a story of few IT guys doing a white collar job. They are just like your gang of friends, laughter, alcohol, smoking, diss about their subordinates. They all find a little escape in form of 'The Club'.
Soon in 2008, as recession hits, they lose their job. Now it's time for revolution, rebellion for a good cause. It's time for Assignment Destruction. Now what is exactly assignment Destruction is something you gonna love while reading this.
What I loved about this book is their writing style. The story is in second person narration. Language used is very comprehensive. Story line is gripping as it deals with all emotions - friendship, dreams, addiction. It gives you a real punch of the corporate culture & also gives an important message - Do what your heart desires. Don't just run behind a 9-5 job. Just keep following your passion & believe in yourself.
A perfect charm to have on your bookshelf, assignment destruction eludes it's readers into the true act of revolution. After all, revolutions are the prelude to freedom. If you are someone who is just living without a cause, here's a lesson to understand what life means. The deeper you dive into the pages, the better you understand how your job sucks at every square. The book brilliantly deals with the emotions of love, denial, death and destruction. Every character represents a theme and every part stands to sum up for an event that in itself is far more than mere destruction. If you have read this far, there's no spoiler coming and you have wasted time enough not reading it. Better grab it while on your work and tell your boss YDGAF! GREAT WORK MAYANK SEHGAL! waiting for more of it as a sequel. Jimmy deserves it.
A few IT guys, stuck in a rat race, decides to change the system and maybe how the world works. Sounds unrealistic isn't it. Yes the book is a bit too unrealistic. The book revolves around the lives of few youngsters who hates their 9-5 IT jobs, not just them, everyone hates the 9-5 job.
The narration is done by a third person, that is we go through the plot in the eyes of a third person, interesting as it sounds. A bit too unrealistic after it enters the second half. Unnecessary explanations and exaggerations of circumstances are made. I don't personally agree to the point that everyone hates their 9-5 job, like no, there are people who love their 9-5 jobs. The characters were a bit too sexists.
The plot, isn't that bad tho. A simple read and if you hate 9-5 jobs, you'll surely like the book.
Assignment Destruction , the name itself is very catchy and so is the plot.I am quite sure many IT people will pick this up the minute they read the blurb because it speaks a lot. I loved the whole story setup and the narration. All the characters are very interesting and they never seemed unimportant to the story development. Overall the story is bold and the narration is even bolder with a lot of emotions .The book speaks volumes of frustration and the monotony faced by most of the IT guys. I highly recommend this book..
Really unlikable characters, repetitive, boring and there's no plot. DNFed it. Yes. I DID NOT FINISH READING IT. The wannabe characters. The repeated themes and plot. Well, the writing seems to be trying too hard. With each character getting introduced, the story was becoming weaker and weaker. Instead of representing the woes and the actual lives of thw youngsters, more emphasis was given on how to swear or abuse or desperate attempts to show in such a superficial way to show how frustrated the characters are. So. Don't.
“Sometimes the protagonist you are rooting for is not a hero”. Self-satisfaction does vary from person to person depends upon their culture, mindset and whatnot ? their family background. The hardest challenge in life is to stay normal in all situations. We need to justify it why we didn’t reach the stage, If we stay behind the expected societal expectations and refuse to participate in their baseless rules we would be judged. Assignment destruction is really quirky that centres around Jimmy and Rohan’s PRO-life and how do they quench their unsatisfactory parts of their life having their own customised group called “The club”? It consists of a group of IT hippies with their own flairs and does offbeat activities to compensate for their frustrating 9-6 desk job and office politics. With all the routines like working and weekend mojo’s etc a huge storm swirls the IT Field in the name of recession and had impacted the Protagonist friends lives. And down the line, He loses his friend in a terrorist attack and all. From here the story takes its gear to its top-notch called “Assignment destruction” by the club. Did their schemed plot has worked? Whether few IT guys revenge against big corporates gone as it was planned? Or was it necessary to go such extent against big hypocrites? Read further to dig more. What makes the best of this book is the author didn’t intend to justify any moral through this story. He kept it subtle and cool in breaking the tradition. And made a bold attempt bringing some real-life events and gone swag in his debut novel. I was awed with his writing style and the narration does its justice. This story told in 5 different parts which are quite unique. It would be a huge hit if the sequences of the events blended at a few instances. The strongness of the characters is brilliant. Coming to the narration it has so much detail and characterisation. This book got me flip through the pages so fast. It was fascinating and readable. The pacing is perfect. The cover’s illustration with the details of scribblings and a biker at the backdrop painted a picture of it's out of the rut attempt.
The story revolves around Jimmy and his roommate Rohan. They're best buddies and work in the same office. They hate this mundane life and want to do something which does not involve sitting at one place in front of a computer screen and following your senior's orders.
There comes a phase of recession due to which company has to cut down their resources and the company is not getting projects from any client and as a result , many employees lose their job.
Rohan is one of them. He loses his job and is not able to handle the pain and vanishes somewhere. Even Jimmy does not know about his whereabouts.
He gets devastated and misses Rohan too much. And this is the time to do something different. To follow their dreams. Leave this job and do something which gives him peace.
Jimmy and few other IT guys come together to live life on their own terms. To do something which interests them.
Read the book and find out what happened with Rohan. Where did he go and will he ever come back ? And what struggles did Jimmy go through to achieve success ?

Overall Experience : My overall experience was very good. And I'm planning to gift this book to my friend because I know he can definitely relate to it.
Penned by Mayank Sehgal, assignment destruction is the book about the people working in IT field, their struggles and misfortunes. Jimmy and Rohan, the protagonists are not enjoying the job they have. Both of them discover "the club" where people from IT sector show their real talents. As they join the club, their lives changes. How will the club change their life? Will they follow their passion? Will they get the ultimate freedom?
Rohan, Jimmy, Aman, Sameer, Ram,. every one of the characters is the person you know in real life. Jimmy and Rohan's friendship is the core of the story. It's will written and beautifully developed. I loved knowing Jimmy. His sarcastic comebacks, sense of humour and, love and passion for the people he loves is the emotional connectivity to the story. Rohan is one of my recent favorites. His character is beautifully written. Each and every character is flawed and that is what makes them real.
The narration switches between first and third person. I usually don't read the books where the story is told through a third person's eyes, but I really enjoyed this one. It felt like a friend is telling me his friend's story and hence the informal tone and language don't bother.
The author is successful in portraying each emotions —I welled up on the emotional parts, I cringed where the author intended to make the reader cringe, I laughed in the funny parts. Ignoring the grammatical errors, the flow us smooth and easy, the pace moderate. I couldn't understand the part written in Punjabi. While that part might be an important connection between the readers and the characters, I feel it could have been translated. The sexist remarks and the objectifying of women too could have been avoided.
This is one of the books that captures the raw emotions. Pick it and you won't regret it. Overall a good read.
I always wanted to become an engineer but because of my hatred for science I opted for another career. But after seeing the life of an engineer, I feel happy that I chose Commerce :P . Also after reading this book I felt bad for engineers and their job timings.
The book is about the life of engineers and how they cope up with their jobs during the time of recession. The story is about Jimmy and his friends who were fully engrossed in their job of 9 to 6 in an IT company. They had no time for their personal lives and were always tired and exhausted due to their work. They worked like slaves and were always bitching about their boss. One day, Jimmy found about a club named ' The Club ' where similar people enjoyed each other's company and had a lot of fun. He along with his friend Rohan, joined the club and was enjoying making new friends.
But fate had other plans for him. Their lives flipped upside down when their country was hit by recession. Everyone started losing their jobs including Jimmy's friends because of which Jimmy started losing his friends. Jimmy was physically, mentally and emotionally drained. Being depressed, he sought relief from alcohol.
He along with his other IT friends pledged to fight the injustice met to them. They planned out something dangerous. What is assignment destruction? Can a few it guys change how the world works? Read to find out.
This book is an amazing read. The cover page is interesting and matches well with the plot. The characters were well built and I got connected to them instantly. The emotions were raw and so real. The twists and turns kept me hooked. The language used by the author is easy and understandable . The narration is smooth and the book is well paced. Overall I loved the book.

Fantastic read... Exactly what you need on a lazy afternoon
The author has done a pretty fantastic job in putting together this book of his. I usually don't rate books 5/5 unless they're exceptional. I, for one, surely believe that this book is any reader's delight. It has got all the aspects a reader would look out for, apart from some really really relatable and awesome characters. It's got a lot of action, a fair bit of adventure, a pretty good dose of humour, heartbreaks, farewells, bromance,.. you name it! This book is by far the most humorous book I've read till date (and I assure you, I've read many😅). It pans out in front of your eyes like a action thriller movie put on steroids with a fair amount of humour as a bonus. From being rib tickling at times to drowning you in sorrowful sympathy, in this journey, the very honest and harsh reality of the IT world is exposed in a savoury manner. The storyline is very well constructed, so much so that it almost feels as if you're standing just beside the protagonist and experiencing it first hand. It can make you ROFL or induce tears in your eyes or invoke some righteous anger and get your adrenaline pumping, all this apart from its main strength of making you turn on your grey cells and get your thinking hat on, owing to the life philosophy it preaches (mostly in the form of Led Zeppelin's songs' lyrics). So, choose a lazy afternoon and prepare yourself to Rock n Roll while on one heck of a rollercoaster ride!!

Assignment destruction starts describing from how the IT industry is destroying talents to how some IT folks decides to destroy the industry.
The book is well written and the language is easy to read. (Except the three pages written in Punjabi, I don't have a Punjabi friend and Google Translate also didn't help🤓). The characters, their daily routine life, pressure they face and the frustration they feel are clearly described. The narration is fast paced and the character development is well written for the debut novel.
What I didn't like in this book is the characters are always boozing. Expect that I really enjoyed reading it. I would totally recommend this book to all IT employees.
My favorite quote from this book, "Cubicles are talent killer my friend."
Mayank Sehgal’s, “Assignment Destruction” revolves around Jimmy and his friends. Jimmy and his friends are working for some IT companies, and all of them are fed up with their daily routine. So, they try everything to escape from the routine, and eventually they come across, “The Club”. In the club, they find solace, but that solace was for some time only, because some time after recession hit, and most of the people in the club lost their jobs. Now, they all decide to go against the IT companies. Their enemy is not a human being, but a companies, so will they get justice? Or they will give up forms the rest of the story. The best part of this book is its story. As the story unfolds, it becomes more and more interesting and the reader looks forward about what will happen next. There are various twists and turn. The reader will be glued to this book once start reading. The narration part is also amazing. The development of the characters are also good. The ending is really unpredictable. Overall, it is an amazing book.
Information Technology is one of the sectors which provide employment to a big chunk of people. But in return, the sector takes the life out of these people. Assignment Destruction is the story of Jimmy and his friends, employed in IT companies, who move from unhappy to depressed to frustrated condition, as the recession crisis of 2008 rages on along with numerous other unforgettable events. How the frustration vents out, forms the story.
The cover page of the book portrays a fellow fleeing from a company cubicle to the mountains in a bike. This precisely summarises the book. However, I did not find the cover inviting enough. The story plot is good and so is the narrative. Jimmy’s character is fleshed out vividly whereas all others come and go in the narrative. One of the surprises was the switching between third person and first person almost halfway through the story. Was it really a necessity from the story or was it the author’s play isn’t very clear.
However, this change in person does not make much of a difference. The initial half of the book is fun and at times can sound boring. The second half picks up pace to give a thrilling climax, though I did not find it credible enough.
I recommend the book to those on the lookout for a quick read. Overall, a book to taste.
Assignment Destruction, debut novel of Mayank Sehgal is an astonishing book.
The book is about Jimmy Bhatia and his friends who are stuck with IT jobs. All of them hate it because it drains the soul out of them. They become victims of so called "office politics" and recession. So what do they do about it? Join the game of office politics? Or, Live life as they want to? Get the book to find an answer:)
The book is amusing, conversational and deep. The language is legible. It does contain strong language and analogies here and there which certain people might find offensive. However, I think that's part of the book because this book is about young people who are frustrated about work and life. We all do that, don't we? The author has chosen a subject that every youngster in the nation experience and has provided solution for it as well.
There's only one thing I did not like - towards the end of the book, there are couple of pages which are written in Punjabi. It was mentioned in the "pre-script" that a Punjabi friend could help in translating. I don't have one. So how am I supposed to know about the conversation. The author should think of his universal audience instead of just considering his acquaintance. Apart from this, it was a good read.
A perfect book from every aspect, it's a story of a few IT guys who took the step that not everyone has the courage to take. This book teaches us to understand the real problem in our lives. It's a journey and a rollercoaster ride which will leave you spell-bounded with its intense writing, perfect plot, and a perfect moral.
The story never gets boring, and the twists in between are enough to keep you glued up to the book. It's not a long read and once you read it, I might feel really short. Language is clear and the conversations are funny at times. It is one of my favorite reads now. What a book!
A book based on the life of an engineer by an engineer. We begin with the IT hub Pune. It tells us the story of a few guys who were frustrated and were on the verge of bursting out and quitting their IT jobs to pursue their passion. The story is having its twists and turns, some unexpected things will happen as you will finish the book. Even after all what happened during the story, it ends with a positive look on life. It had a lot of elements and factors which contributed to the formation of the storyline. It started pretty well and got its pace but as we move close to the end the story slows down and becomes stagnant for some time. Alongside, the way of writing was a bit complicated too. The portrayal of the life of engineers was accurate and I am pretty sure every engineer would relate to it. Overall, I would rate it 3.5/5
It's good, provides wholesome entertainment and keeps you going.
Everything will be going fine when out of a sudden, tears will be rolling down your cheeks. Apart from that, it primarily reflects the lives and experiences of people working in the Indian IT industry; which you may wanna have a go through before planning a one for yourselves.
P.S: It made me reconsider my decision to join the IT league.
Just one word ... AMAZING ! The book is the first work by the author and its just so amazing. The book keeps you gripped throughout the story and you will never find a dull moment nor you will like to leave it midway. The story will make you burst into laughter and will make cry. Its a must read for people who want to break through in life and make it big. Big cheers to the author.
I straight out liked the book. There are some plot points that I don't approve of but it is a worthy read. Story elevates in the end and gives a satifactory ending. Jimmy is a well laid out character so are his friends. Only problem is this engineering field is so much foraged that the book falls in the cliche. Its still better than most of the other works such as this.
AMAZING! It's a book which would make you laugh, cry, anxious and alot more in it's way. The whole experience of reading this would lead you to an image of what the writer wanted to deliver- the fun, the loss, the love. You would love Jimmy- I bet you! (and I'm sure I'm not gonna lose this bet)
Assignment Destruction - story of a few IT guys by Mayank Sehgal 🌸₹249 🌸210 pages 🌸 Publishers- paper town publishers 🌸 Fiction 🌸 Marketing partner- the bookholics 🌸language - English.
Blurb- Set in 2008 Pune, it is the story of a few IT guys who are corporate slaves at the hands of the whites. After studying nearly half their lives, they land themselves a white collar job they weren't meant to. The story is mostly about Jimmy and his friends. Doing a 9 to 6 job is just not there think they think that the cubicle is a cage and all their desire's are being crumbled by the tremendous work pressure. To cope up with the torture, Jimmy joins the club with Rohan. It was a relief from the mundane and monotonous life. At the club they talk about everything under the sky except for work. They did crazy things which give them a high better than any sort of drug but like all highs that came a low. Recession hit the economy and one by one all of friends starts losing their jobs and he starts losing his friends too. He fails professionally, doesn't get the girl loses his friends, a dead sister and has a fucked up relationship with his father. He is physically, mentally and emotionally drained. Being depressed, he seeks relief from alcohol. The rest is history. The story is all about one's self-discovery and revolution. It ends with a cliffhanger which leaves us wondering what really happened. What is assignment destruction? Can a few it guys change how the world works? Read to find out. My opinion- 🌸The cover page is intresting. It depicts someone running for the hills literally from the cubicle. There's a bomb on the desk and the name states- Jimmy Bhatia Corporate Slave? 🌸 A debut book holds a special place in the heart of the author. This was one such story. It had humour, sarcasm, bromance, adventure, plenty of action, tons of depression, lots of drinking, abuses, heartbreak and a one sided love story. 🌸 The blurb won't make you guess the impact this story will have on you. This is one of those stories you don't expect much from but then it blows your mind. 🌸 The language is lucid and simple. There is a part is punjabi which made things intresting and helped peek into Jimmy's background. 🌸 The narration is in third person but then shifts to first person. That was kinda difficult to catch at first but the story was smooth. 🌸 The characterization is brilliant. The back story of each character was well done and brings a real deal to the story. The characters of the girls howerever is really disappointing. I understand that it was more of a man's show but at times the texts felt bit sexist. 🌸 Oh it also has some amazing quotes. 🌸 I did cry at times. You will know when you get there( no spoilers). 🌸 This could have been a movie and i would go watch it.
Assignment Destruction is a book closer to the ground reality. Almost every other IT personnel like me could very well relate. Jimmy Bhatia, the protagonist of the story is trying to find an escape from his mundane reality and in doing so, he gets acquainted to ‘The Club’, which later goes against the white collar job and corporate slavery. Is there is a revolution waiting? What is Assignment Destruction? This is exactly the question which made me pick up this book. Most of the narration is in third person. With simple English, the lives of few IT guys is described and sounds very familiar to our daily lives. The exhaustion, the celebrations and the self-discovery is all a part of the wonderful journey. The nerve-twitching end of the story is a bonus. So, pick it up in case you’re looking to understand the struggle of youth with hopes, dreams, friendships, anger, death, and soul-searching.
