Lucy Langton was born in Boston but currently lives in Maine with her husband and their beautiful twin daughters.
She has a PhD in English literature from Columbia University. Her field of expertise was 19th-century British novel. After college, she went backpacking in Europe where she met her husband. It was love at first sight!
Lucy knew she wanted to be a writer ever since she was a little girl, writing stories from different eras to read to her little brother. Her first story felt like a dream come true.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys painting, eating pizza and baking… not necessarily in that order! She also identifies herself as the biggest Jane Austen fan!
Let me start off by saying, I love historical romances and I was so looking forward to reading this, but during the first third of the book I found I did not like the governess, Emilia. She is a bright cheery person however, she has several flaws I find suspect. She takes great delight in gossiping, she sates her curiosity even if it crosses line of propriety. For example, she is in the library and finds a journal written by the Earl, Joshua. She peeks and reads the first page and decides to put it back. She is stunned by what she read. She goes and has tea and can't stop thinking about the journal. She returns to the library and takes the journal. She is caught by Joshua who is furious (can't blame him). He tells her what he thinks. But instead of being embarrassed or feel guilty she becomes indignant and chastises him for leaving the journal out in the open. She did not feel regret, she just concentrated on the crazy feelings of excitement and confusion she got around him. I don’t know. She just started working for him and I think this is a bad start for her. I just do not like this woman. The next day, the Earl gives up some information about the darkness filling his home to Emilia. She is sworn to secrecy and is also told that the Earl fears for her and his sister’s safety based on what he told her. Again, Emilia is thinking about the physical attraction to the Earl and not the topics at hand. I don’t know. The more I read this the more I want to put it down and move on to something else. Okay, does Emilia ever think of anything other than these “feelings” she has for the Earl? OMG… I am 58% in the book and she is still mooning over the Earl. Will it ever stop? Now that I have finished the book, I like the overall concept of the story. I just wish there was more sleuthing and less mooning. I feel there is room for improvement. In the end, it was Emilia’s nosiness and curiosity that was able to dispel the darkness in Joshua’s home and his life. A happy ending.
Mr. Jealousy gets his comeuppance. Emilia💃💋, a young governess, starts her second placement as governess to the younger sister of The young, tall, and handsome, Earl of Cunningham, Lord Joshua Forest🐺🍆🌋.
The Earl🐺 has a secret that makes him dour and no fun. He found his parents murdered in their home, for what reason, never discovered, and by who, never found out. The mystery eats at his soul.
Emilia💃💋 is a bright light at the end of Joshua's dark tunnel, but he persists in having an incredible anger management problem! He wants her badly for his own, and his young sister loves her, but This seems to just make him all the more angry and nearly out of control at times. Take a Chill Pill, Dude!🐺🍆🌋
ARC Received from Author📚. I also got the book with KU.
Joshua🐺🍆🌋 is a tyrant and prone to tirades at times throughout this book. No one in the household, including servants, is spared from his angry outbursts.
That said, I enjoyed the two main characters and how Emilia💃💋 tries to placate Joshua🐺🍆🌋 when he flies off the handle, which occurs often in the book. She loves Joshua🐺🍆🌋 and it hurts her to see his obvious mental anguish from losing his parents in such a horrific fashion, and having to become the new Earl with a heavy burden of responsibility to his sister and to all of The people in his employ and all of those living on his lands.
Interesting book with Emilia💃💋 seesawing back and forth about accepting her role as a commoner in love💘 with a noble, and what she figures to do about it.
Had a promising start, but ridiculous really!!!! This novel was not great for many reasons! Characters development/storyline/jumping around & vague description on some whereas overly descriptive at other times! Author completely skips over facts or surprises us with others facts just to make the story wrap up! I finished it only to see it painstakingly done!!!! Will not be reading anymore from this series/author! Way too many (better) novels out there to only feel so so about this one in particular so in my opinion don’t bother I wouldn’t recommend this one!!!!!
Man was I disappointed :((( I had this on my kindle because I downloaded it for free at one point.
I don't know if this book is marketed as a Jane Eyre retelling, but I definitely thought that it was. Since I felt like it was a Jane Eyre retelling, I was super intrigued and excited to continue with the book. BUT once I hit the like 40% mark, the book went downhill for me.
One of the things that really bugged me was how mean the hero was, and how the heroine liked him despite that. Like I have no idea why she fell in love with him if he was constantly rude to her and even made her cry! That's a NOPE for me.
(SPOILERS)
Some issues that I had:
-This book was good until the mystery plot was added. Like I found it so dumb and anticlimactic. -A big issue that I had with the mystery part was when our heroine was interviewing the staff that used to work at the house. Like when someone is murdered in the house, everyone in the house gets interviewed after the incident. Why are these interviews happening YEARS after the incident? That did not make sense at all. -The part about the hero being engaged to the other female character, but wanting the heroine to stay in his house was so bad. Like the author did not even talk about how wrong that was. It was like the Earl could have his cake and eat it too with both of the women. EWW. -Something I did not like was how the author was not letting the Earl read the letter the heroine brought to him. A normal person would have read it. It felt like the author was purposefully not having the hero read the letter just to further the plot, not because it was something that the hero would actually do. It did not fit the character at all.
Rating: R for sex Sex: multiple scenes Language: very little, mostly taking the Lord's name in vain Violence: a punch and kick, reference to murder plans HEA: yes Would I read more of the series: no
----SPOILERS---- Emilia is a governess, and her two charges have grown old enough that the family no longer needs her services. They help her by securing her employment with the earl for his sister, Deirdre. The estate is run-down, there are only two servants, and everything and everybody is gloomy and oppressive. Emilia, over time, falls in love with the Earl, and he for her. He is trying to solve the mystery of his parents murder. After the night they consummate their love, she leaves to track down information from former servants so that Joshua can be freed from this weight on his shoulders. She discovers that her suspicions about Hugh and Lady Spencer are, indeed, true. Lady Spencer conspired to have Joshua's parents killed, and Hugh let the murderers in. Joshua sees to it that justice is done. Emilia then acts as mistress of the house, replenishing the staff and seeing that the home is restored. Joshua proposes, she accepts, and at Easter she is pregnant.
The plot wasn't very interesting, and the mystery of the murders not very mysterious. We don't see a lot of interactions between the hero and heroine, between the heroine and the sister, though we do see interaction between the heroine and the other two servants. The characters weren't well-developed. For instance, something was up with her dad, but it was never explained. I wasn't invested enough in the characters or the plot to read the extended epilogue.
I believe I have enjoyed other stories by this author but while this story had some good things it was overwhelmed by the bad. If it was ever edited it was done poorly. The hero’s name is mistakenly transposed with Hugh’s more than once, there are several typos and grammatical errors and some serious plot holes. The first part of the boom drags - why so much detail was needed for the house she was leaving was baffled. And there were other sections where the repetition and excessive (and unnecessary) detail bogged down the narrative.
How at 21 she could have been a governess “for many years” begs explanation.
My biggest issue was the the supposed romance. I have read other governess/lord stories but this one did not feel romantic at all in the first 2/3 of the book. At best he was cold and domineering, but at the worst he seemed like someone abusing his position as her employer and as a governess with no family or other prospects (laboriously repeated) she was literally at his mercy — not romantic or sexy.
The good - the mood and descriptions really did set the scene and make you feel you were there. At times the angst and tension was well written and Joshua’s character later in the book was better written.
But sadly the minor good points just didn’t outweigh the overwhelmingly bad. I downloaded this as part of a collection so I shall see how the other three stories are.
When the girls she has taught for years, Emilia finds out she will be taking a governess position at a neighboring estate. Approaching her new assignment as an adventure the first obstacle is her new boss, Lord Joseph. After the murder of his parents in their home a darkness depends on the Earl's home and his life. Entering the outside of the unkempt estate, it doesn't bode well for the interior. Her first contact with the Earl doesn't go well when he is abrupt and tells her she must obey him a all times and she is ordered to dress more modestly. Sensing there is more here than meets the eye she agrees without question. As the Earl becomes more controlling and they are fighting their attraction to each other darkness seems to cling their lives. Emilia decides to solve the mystery of the murders to release the Earl from his misery. She knows that when she falls in love with Lord Joseph there is no hope of respectable promises between them, but when he announces his plan to marry Lady Spencer her heart is broken. I could go on forever about the points in this book but I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
Emelia is taken on as governess to Deidre after she has fulfilled her current position, by Joshua , Deidre's brother. The household she now finds herself in is nothing like previous posts that she has been employed in and darkness and mystery abounds since the murders of Joshua and Deidre's parents. Joshua demands complete loyalty to himself and control over everything that goes on in the household including Deidre and Emelia's clothing. Joshua catches Emelia in the library with his journal and accuses her of snooping and doesn't know whether he can trust her or not. She tells him that she'd never do anything to bring harm to him or his sister. He then tells her about his parents and that the murderers had never been apprehended therefore he was afraid of something happening to his sister too. With the advent of Emelia into the household, things slowly change, bringing light out of the darkness in their lives. The mystery of the murders is finally solved and Joshua declares his feelings to Emelia.
ONE INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! OMG! Man, talk about hard hitting. A whirlwind of emotions and events that feed from the excitement and nerve racking tension that brings this bad boy roaring to life brilliantly. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and bumps here and there pull you deeper into this raging storyline and hard hitting plot. Throw in all the drama, intrigue, uncertainty, danger and suspense and you have one intense, page turning bombshell that grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish. The characters are complex and so believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are so graphic and detailed it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. You have no trouble picturing every scenario as it plays out perfectly. Lucy definitely nailed this bad boy 100% on point with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together flawlessly. Remarkable job Lucy, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
I received this book as an ARC copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my review. I did enjoy the book overall, but I thought the first two thirds of the story were a little dark, as well as a little wordy and repetitive. I got a little bit bored, until the last third of the book. That is where the story comes alive and gets exciting. The characters are well-described and the story does have a wonderful ending; love really does conquer all. I always enjoy an extended epilogue, however I don't like having to go online and enter my email address in order to be able to read it. I think the extended epilogue should be at the end of the book itself, after the epilogue.
This is the first book I read by Lucy Langton and can say I was not disappointed. She wrote an emotionally intriguing story where the two main characters were captivating. Amelia always tried to find the best in all situations and the Earl of Cunningham is an autocratic, brooding, moody, and at times throws his bad temper around (which is assumed is attributed to the mystery of his parents death). This is a good first book for Mrs. Langton and can't wait to read more from her.
This story has a very good plot, but the writing tends to drone on in places. The forbidden passion of the governess and the earl is continuously drummed throughout the book where I started to get a headache from it. Personally, you couldn't get me near the earl with his cold demanding arrogance. Emilia is wonderfully warm, but very much subservient in her ways. I guess that is why she falls in love the with earl and his dominance. I would have left him curled up in a ball in the garden, if he had done that to me at the ball. I've read better governess and the lord stories.
What a great book! This one is a historical romance, with mystery, suspense, danger, intrigue, twist and turns and were the villain gets her due. The characters are complex and so believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. This book is the one that will keep you turning the pages! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, from cover to cover. I am looking forward to the next book.
This is my honest opinion n I received this book as an ARC BOOK
This is quite an amazing story to read. The intrigue never stops. This is my first read of Lucy Langton's and I'm quite impressed with her writing. She puts the words down so that you can watch everything you are reading. I'm not one to like an author repeating the same lines over and over just to make the story longer. Lucy Langton doesn't do that and I feel as though I can keep reading her work for quite a long time. Thank you Lucy 💖
This is a beautiful story, with wonderful charicters.A young woman making her way in the world by being a Governess. A broody young Earl, with a controlling personally ,who rules his estate with a iron fist. But Amelia's love will free the Earl, and set in motion to bringing the ones who killed his parents to the light and justice will be served. This story has a happily ever after. Thank you!❤️
Goodness, that was a tough read 😭 the characters were silly, Forest was a tool, Emilia was, well, silly. the plot had promise, but i found the writing superfleous, and not in the the Woodiwiss style that i can get behind. i found it painted the characters poorly and i didnt care for them. i only finished the book because i wanted to know why buddy was obsessed with everyone dressing modestly. 🤷🏽♀️
I very much enjoyed reading this book. The characters are wonderfully drawn and engaging. The plot is complex enough to keep your attention throughout, with plenty of twists and turns. I couldn't stop reading!
I can definitely recommend this book to you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I love a good happily ever after story and this is one of the best. Emalie’s personality is enchanting. She is the person to always see the good in any situation. When she perceived evil and not good the Earl should have listened to her. The story is interesting from beginning to the end.
This story kept my interest with a love story that endured. Love overpower the feelings between 2 people that society say shouldn't interact together. Then, add along a murder mystery with a powerful storyline, what a wonderful mix. Keep the exciting stories coming.
This book was interesting but rather predictable. I loved the description of the gloomy home. Did not like the scene in the forest. Seem to have jumped from no where. How did Hugh know she was there? The scene was not properly written even though it served the most important purpose of the book.
Very well written. The characters strong, but believable. The heroine strong, with love and understanding. The hero troubled, but touched by the heroines strength, caring nature and loyalty. Well worth a read.
It is a wonderful story. So heartwarming. Loved the mystery of it. Couldn't wait to read what had happened. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who loves a romance with a mystery.
The characters are so real! I was happy with them, sad, frustrated, in love with them. The descriptions of the people allowed me to know them. This is an excellent read!
Loved the storyline even though the Earl was so nasty in the beginning, until you realize all that he had been through. The governess knew something wasn't right, and falling in love with him. Changed his whole outlook.
Loved the way this was written, the common person to help those that have it all. But they really don't have it all! Happiness. Love this mysterious plot. I hope everyone enjoys this book as I did 😊
This story is about a women who came from nothing to marrying an important Earl who can't seem to keep his mind or hands off his sisters governess!! Enjoy ladies!
I liked Emilia. She is bright and courageous. She falls in love with the Earl (her new employer) but I didn't understand why. He may be handsome but he's cold and cruel. It's a strange story but worth reading.
This is an adorable book. The positive additude that Emilia has about everything is lovely. The relationship between her and Joshua is unhealthy they are from two different stations in life. But their love holds strong. Very good read.
This was a fast-paced, swoon-worthy read, that I found I did not want to put down! The story was original and exciting with characters that were realistic and likable. It is everything you could want in a delightful stroll through the pages of a historical romance and more!
