Eleanor Wilde Mystery #2

Potions Are for Pushovers

Rate this book
It may have been a ghost that led Eleanor Wilde to set up shop in a quaint English village. But now that she’s established herself as the town witch, Ellie’s contentedly casting spells on anyone desperate enough—or gullible enough—to request her mysterious potions…

Selling mystical elixirs and tantalizing tonics is a pretty good way for a fake medium to earn a living. Or at least it’s Ellie’s main source of income—until a villager turns up dead. The cause? Murder by poisoning. And though Ellie’s concoctions don’t include anything worthy of a skull and crossbones, suddenly she’s the prime suspect. Her only recourse is to find the culprit who did do away with Sarah Blackthorne. No one liked the mean old battle-axe. But did anyone hate her enough to kill her?

It’s enough of a mystery to make Ellie hang up her witch’s hat and take millionaire beau Nicholas Hartford up on his offer to keep her afloat. Except Ellie is not the kind of woman to lean on a man—least of all a man she adores but whose place in her life is uncertain. Besides, Ellie’s taken on two young witches-in-training—apprentices if you will—and both of them are convinced a werewolf is the murderer.

Just as Ellie’s wondering if there really is something otherworldly going on, animals suddenly begin to disappear—including her beloved cat, Beast. Now Ellie’s on the warpath to uncover the wicked truth about the people and the place she’s only just begun to call home…

Potions Are for Pushovers by Tamara Berry is the second book in the cozy Eleanor Wilde Mystery series. Like most cozy mysteries each book of the series does contain it’s own mystery to be solved so they can be read and understood as a standalone or in any order. Those that follow the series from the beginning however will get more character development from book to book.

Eleanor Wilde or Ellie as she likes to be called is a fake medium, well fake as in she let’s her customers continue in their belief of a ghost when she’s moving rats out of their attic. After an accident ten years ago in which Ellie survived but lost her mother that night and her sister was left in a coma Ellie has had to do whatever she can to pay the medical bills. She doesn’t think of herself as a con artist or fake when she is preforming the service she’s been hired to do but it’s a thin line she’s walking nonetheless.

Ellie has now set up shop in her small town since she became known as the town witch after taking care of a local ghost. Since she’s known as a witch she’s been making a living selling potions to the locals. When a murder victim is found to have been poisoned however local law looks straight at Ellie and her “magical” concoctions but when she’s proven to only use natural, safe ingredients she ends up right in the middle of the investigation again.

The Eleanor Wilde Mystery series is proving to be quite the fun and quirky type of cozy that I an always drawn to. With just a touch of paranormal mixed in with the “fake” main character it’s enough to keep one guessing and certainly engaged with the crazy characters and mystery. Definitely one I’d recommend to those that like a cozy that is outside of the box or genre norms.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

A charming and well written story with a slight super natural element. It's the second novel and continuation from an initial book about a modern day "good witch" with a mystery to solve.

I started this a while ago and then put it down for more pressing reads, but I'm happy I returned to it as I really enjoyed both the writing and the story. Sometimes, I like veering off from my usual reading habits to add some flavor.

I loved Berry’s first Eleanor Wilde mystery, Seances Are for Suckers, and so I looked forward to this one. Ellie, our protagonist, makes a living as a sham medium and pusher of herbal potions. She arrived in this tiny English town in the last book, hired by the wealthy Nicholas Hartford to scam his family, but they fell in love and so she stayed here. Business is on hold, however, until the murder of the local battle ax has been solved; until Ellie can sell her potions again, she can’t make a living, and the heat is on.

My thanks go to Net Galley and Kensington Books for the review copy. This book is for sale now.
The glory of satire is that the most tired, trite elements of a mystery can be trotted out and placed on full display, the more overdone the better. Add into it an overflowing supply of snark, swift pacing, a hint of confusion and the very teensiest, briefest moment of sentimentality and the result is, well, magical.

At the same time that Sarah is murdered, pets begin to disappear. A grisly surprise is left in Ellie’s herb garden, and her cat Beast, a menace if ever there was one, is nowhere to be seen. Cats, pigs…what’s next? Her sometimes-friend the local constable is irritated that Ellie doesn’t pass along the finer details of what she learns, but she points out to him that witches and law enforcement have a problematic history. Crackle crackle, she says. Burn burn.

The best new element is Lenore, a pesky but gifted adolescent that wants to job shadow Ellie. Together with partner Rachel, she embarks upon local werewolf research, and this thread makes me guffaw out loud multiple times. (At one point Lenore decides she’d rather be called Lenny because it sounds more like a gumshoe; my reading notes suggest that Rachel should then become Squiggy. Boomers will understand this reference if nobody else does.)

My affection for Ellie increases when she eats an entire chocolate cake. I’d been watching that cake since she received it, waiting for the typical cozy plot point to play out. Most authors would either have Ellie serve or gift the cake to another recipient, or have it smashed in some sort of hilarious accident before she got a single bite. Berry, however, is not your typical cozy mystery writer. It’s the slightly edgy bits that make this series so successful.

The series is written for adults, but teachers and parents looking for engaging reading for their own gifted adolescent should be fine here. There are no torrid sex scenes, no use of vivid profanity.
Sadly, my own review copy disappeared with no trace from my kindle, so I can’t access juicy quotes; happily. I did use the Goodreads update system, which provided me with the particulars listed above.

There are few authors that can make me laugh out loud every single time I read their work, and that alone makes this writer more valuable to me than most. I await the next Eleanor Wilde book with gleeful anticipation, and whether you have read the first book in this series or not, I recommend this one to you wholeheartedly.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Werewolves aren’t my thing at all, in fact I have turned down books for review as soon as I saw them mentioned in the synopsis or stopped reading books where they have appeared unannounced but after reading the first book in this series Seances Are For Suckers and loving it I trusted author Tamara Berry to keep things cozy and intriguing without ruffling my feathers. I can report that while I did learn some werewolf lore I was right.

Eleanor Wilde has set up her business in a mistress cottage on the Hartford family estate and become quite close with Nicholas Hartford III after using her “powers” to clear “ghosts” out of the Hartford castle. He knows she is a fake and is fine with that. She has clients who believe in her and buy her potions and elixirs, but when Sarah Blackthorne is poisoned she loses what clientele she did have and also becomes the number one suspect.

New in town she didn’t know that basically everyone hated the woman that was killed which eases her mind as far as the authorities but overwhelms her as her suspect list includes almost everyone she knows. She also finds herself with two young apprentices who due to another death and some missing animals including Ellie’s cat, Beast, believe a werewolf is responsible for the deaths. Ellie even starts to buy into their theory.

____

I really like Ellie and the way she finds her way in this community of characters as the story continues. She has her issues like a leaky roof and the responsibility for her apprentices all while she tries to investigate a murder. I really appreciated that Ellie’s sister Winnie is still a very important part of her life. I also enjoyed the way her relationship with Nichols is progressing. We have learned quite a bit about our protagonist but Nicholas is still mostly a mystery himself.

The plot of this mystery is complex and filled with twists and turns and a very hairy individual. The death of a neighbor’s animal was a little gory but was critical to the progression of the story. I enjoyed that the young girls played key roles in solving part of the mystery and that she got a little help from an unusual source. I was caught off guard when the actual killer was revealed. A person completely off my radar. I should have realized after reading the first book to expect the unexpected. Ms. Berry has proven to be excellent at keeping this reader captivated by the story and totally surprising me at the end.

Potions Are for Pushovers is a great addition to what I hope is a long-running series. It is very well-written and the cast of characters continues to grow and evolve. The drama is balanced by humor in all the right places and the romance is still a minor point at this point. I am really excited to see what the author has in store next. Please, no vampires 🙂

This story can be read on its own but recommend reading both books in order for maximum enjoyment.

I had read the first book in this series, and I was ready to read the next. Eleanor is an interesting character in that she is not really a believer in the paranormal but makes her living pretending to, and, to top it off, she hears her dead sister’s ghost. As with the first book, this one is very well-written, has intriguing characters, and an engrossing plot. I love how it seems there is a paranormal element to the story, but the end is very different and ties into the mystery. The only thing that I didn’t really like is that I’m having a hard time relating to Nicholas and to a small degree Eleanor. Not bad enough to really bother me, but I do think about it once in a while. Overall, this is a fun, light, cozy-ish mystery that I quite enjoyed. Recommend this book, and I received a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Cozy, with a little touch of snark and less paranormal than you might expect from a book whose lead character has settled into a quaint English village as a psychic/witch/purveyor of elixirs and potions. Of course, she spent most of her adult pretending to be a psychic to support the care for her comatose triplet sister. To protect her reputation, Eleanor Wilde becomes involved with solving the death of the most unliked resident of her new hometown. Her new "apprentices" with other engaging characters make this book loads of fun. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

This is the second book in this series, but I quite easily fell into the world and the characters. Ellie was a fantastic lead, and Nicholas as her beau was a great choice. Seeing them on page together made me want to go back and find out how they got together in the first book, because their banter was just precious. This book has a slight Supernatural lean, so I expected the ending to be more spooky, but alas, the worst monsters are human after all.

I think this series has had a solid beginning, and we can expect more great books to come. The township and characters are great, and the sleuth team building around Ellie will be unstoppable. Five stars!

Wonderful series (of 2 books). The author's use of language is amazing. I don't know how to put it in words, but the words she uses and the way she handles description (of settings & characters) and the way she pens the protagonist's inner thoughts is remarkable.

The plot is solid, too.

(A note - if you don't like to read about harm to animals, this isn't the book for you)

Potions Are for Pushovers by Tamara Berry is the 2nd book in Eleanor Wilde Mystery series, and a unique book that I really enjoyed. I loved this book as much as her first book, Séances are for Suckers.
Eleanor Wilde moved to England, hired by a rich English man Nicholas Hartford III, to get rid of the ghosts in his family's England estate. Nicholas knows she is a fake, but wanted his mother and sister convinced. Now Ellie has established herself as the town witch making potions. When someone in the village dies from poison, she becomes the main subject. Wow, this book was so good, and I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. There are a lot of twists and turns that kept me reading. There is a wonderful mixture of mystery and humor, for a well-balanced unique story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book.

I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. Thank you.

I had a hard time getting into this book. The actions against animals really put me off. I have a hard time reading about someone hurting animals, people deserve it sometimes but not animals. I also had a hard time connecting with the main character. I am not a saint, but cheating people doesn't make me inclined to like a character.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH

I received access to this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books Publisher for this amazing opportunity.

This book is a continuation of "Séances are for Suckers". The name of this book, "Potions Are for Pushovers", is also quite original.

In the first book, Eleanor Wilde (Ellie) works as a medium, ridding homes of unwanted ghosts. The problem is, Ellie doesn't believe in any of this and uses tricks to deceive her customers into getting what she wants. One day Nicholas Hartford III hires Ellie to help him rid his family's ancestral estate in England of a ghost named Xavier. Nicholas doesn't believe in ghosts and knows that Ellie is a scam. He just wants to know who is behind it.

The first book was a delight and is among my favorites. I didn't find the second book as good as the first, but it's also very enjoyable to read and made me want to read future sequels.

Without spoiling the first book, Ellie now lives in England, in a small cottage, selling potions and known as the local witch. However, she feels out of place and has trouble fitting in. Therefore, she agrees to participate in organizing a big city event. Unfortunately, at the first meeting, a resident ends up poisoned, and the suspect is none other than Ellie herself, as the woman carried a vial of one of her potions. Ellie is then forced to investigate and prove her innocence.

As I said, the book is delicious! Like the first, it has a very clever humor and extremely captivating characters. It's cozy and you want to live there with those people. I will read any continuation of this series for sure! I recommend it.

Recomendo.

Potions are Pushovers is the 2nd instalment in the An Eleanor Wilde Mystery series by Tamara Berry. I was able to read as a stand-alone easily but recommend you read Seances Are for Suckers first.

I enjoyed the setting of the small village is Sussex England. I found the story to be fun and well-written, with quirky characters and a realistic protagonist in Eleanor. We all have flaws and insecurities , and some of us have even felt like an outsider before so I found Eleanor to be a fabulous main character. I love her cat Beast, (just rescued 2 kittens last week I could picture one of them as her familiar). Her apprentices Lenora and Rachel are a hoot as well.

The mystery was well written with plenty of twists and turns and had a steady pace, even had a few surprises. I suspected but didn’t fully figure out whodunit until it was revealed at the end.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal mysteries.

I requested and received an Advanced Reader Copy from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Potions are for Pushovers by Tamera Berry is the second An Eleanor Wilde Mystery. Eleanor “Ellie” Wilde is asked to be on the town fete committee by Rachel Hartford (replace her mother) and, of course, she agrees. At the meeting, Sarah Blackthorn collapses and dies. Inspector Piper stops by the next day to see Ellie because one of her potion bottles was found on the victim who died from poisoning. It was an attraction elixir which was not meant for consumption, but there was nothing that would harm an individual if they did consume it. Unfortunately, Ellie must discontinue making and selling potions until the case is resolved. Ellie has no choice but to investigate to clear her name and save her livelihood. Potions are for Pushovers is the second tale in An Eleanor Wilde Mystery series. It can be read as a standalone for those who have not read Seances are for Suckers. Ellie is putting down roots in the village, and her business is taking off. I like the descriptions of Ellie’s cottage and the charming village. There are a variety of quirky residents. Eleanor is a likeable character who is smart, observant and friendly. She wants to make friends with the residents of the village which is one reason she agrees to be on the fete committee. It is unfortunate that the unlikeable Sarah Blackthorn drops dead and suspicion is cast upon Ellie. Nicholas Hartford III, her boyfriend, is still an enigma at the end of the book. I just want him to share the details of his life, but I believe Nicholas likes being mysterious. Nicholas’s sister, Rachel is kind and has become friends with Ellie along with Annis, the vicar. The mystery had a disagreeable woman as the victim which leads to multiple suspects. While it is not hard to discern the killer’s identity, it is fun following Ellie on her investigation. I like the paranormal element and would like more of it. There is a little gore in this book, but it is minimal. The pacing could have used a little work. I found it lagging at times. Potions are for Pushovers is perfect for those readers who enjoy lighthearted, humorous cozy mysteries with a hint of paranormal. Potions are for Pushovers is a cute paranormal mystery with a pig problem, gossip galore, an irritating inspector, cat conundrum, and a vexatious victim.

This is one of the most delightful paranormal cozy mysteries I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading! Our heroine, New Yorker Eleanor Wilde, is slowly settling into life in a bucolic English village after the events that originally brought her here in the first book in the series. She’s taken up the position of village witch, selling magical elixirs and potions to lovelorn locals—all nonsense, of course, as she’s a charlatan through and through. Necessity caused her to embrace the life of a con artist, pretending to psychic abilities that she absolutely does not have. What she does have is a heart of gold and a faith in the power of the mysterious to gladden the soul, as she goes about her sometimes secretive business in the village:

I grab my handy fence-fixing bag on the way as well as a few flax flowers I keep perennially growing in my garden. It wasn’t just Mr. Worthington I sent to the evergreen crossroads; I make all my clients plant flax seeds in that location as part of their rituals. It totally freaks them out when they pass by to find fully grown flowers where they placed their seeds only a few days previously. Anyone with knowledge of horticulture would be able to tell that the soil is loose and the roots haven’t yet taken hold, but that’s a risk I’m willing to run.

Besides, it makes people happy. To see living proof of magic, to believe wholeheartedly in the power of something miraculous, is more therapeutic than a lot of so-called medical remedies these days.

While rituals and potion-making are helping her make ends meet, she’s starting to worry that she’s not integrating as well into village life as she should be. The wealthy Hartfords who originally hired her to rid their castle of a haunting are firmly in her corner, but not everyone else seems to be taking to her. Vivian Hartford decides to help by volunteering Eleanor for the village fete planning committee. But when one of the other committee members drops dead at Eleanor’s very first meeting, the rumor of poison quickly spreads, as does rumor that Eleanor was the person responsible. Series: An Eleanor Wilde Mystery - Book 2
Author: Tamara Berry
Genre: Cozy Mystery/Paranormal
Publisher: Kensington Books
Page Count: 288

New from Kensington Books comes the second book in the “An Eleanor Wilde Mystery” paranormal cozy series, Potions Are for Pushovers by Tamara Berry. This is a book readers won’t want to put down.

The first book in this new paranormal cozy series was a strong debut, exciting and original, the second one even more. Eleanor is a fake physic who has moved to a remote area in England to start a new life. Using her ability to read people and make natural herbal remedies turned “magic potions” keeps money coming in and a roof over her head. Having her dead sister speaking to her has almost made her a believer in what she knows to be bunk. But when murder comes calling, and her sister's voice goes silent, and her beloved cat goes missing, she jumps into action to find a killer. The fact that the killer may also be a werewolf doesn’t matter.

The character of Eleanor is charismatic, intelligent, and easy to like. Other characters such as her boyfriend, Nicholas, niece Rachel, or any of the other ongoing characters in this paranormal cozy will have readers thrilled, intrigued and genuinely happy as they turn each page.

The victim is perfect, not liked by anyone, and a hateful person. The killer may not be a big surprise, but readers will keep going back and forth in indecision. This book is delightful, cuddle up with a glass of wine, a roaring fire, sit back, relax and lose yourself within the pages type of story. The plot in this paranormal cozy is all original, with a great many clues throw around that keep the story fresh and full of possibilities.

The writing in Potions Are for Pushovers is smooth, professional and easy to read. The situations the main character gets into are both funny and heartfelt. This is a paranormal cozy that readers will enjoy without feeling as though it is just the same book as previous additions to the series with a different title. I am pleased to recommend this book and series to all readers.

So. Most of this I liked. The characters are cute and funny. Ellie is smart, her love interest is a good guy, the village is quirky. The mystery was a little weak--and I mean that more from the sense that the motive was weak (I didn't fully understand the motive. I understand what the motive was supposed to be, but I don't understand why it triggered a murder).

However, there was one thing I really, *really* didn't like and because of that, I've downgraded the rating.

The pig. The poor pig that is brutally killed early in the book, its heart ripped out of its chest? It's a pet. It's quite clear from context that she is more than livestock. Now, because of the other missing and murdered pets in the book, it is assumed that the pig is part of that trend, done in by the murderer. Great, because the murderer is caught & will be punished--and for killing kitty cats and this pet pig, (and, okay, a person), the murderer should be harshly punished!

BUT. That tiny element of horror and injustice ruined the book for me.

I liked the characters enough that I may try more in the series, but I have little time to waste on cozies that don't actually catch and punish criminals, and I include pet and animal killers firmly in the criminal class. Shame on the author.

POTIONS ARE FOR PUSHOVERS by Tamara Berry
The Second Eleanor Wilde Mystery

Deciding to stay in England Eleanor Wilde reinvents herself from ghost banishing psychic medium to local witch, selling potions and elixirs. Opinion of her is mixed in the village, but she has regular customers as well as a young girl who decided to become her apprentice as part of a school project. But when the village battle-axe keels over in the church hall after accusing Eleanor of giving her the evil eye, business comes to an abrupt halt. When her apprentice suggests a werewolf, Ellie scoffs. But there are signs signifying werewolf activity and local animals are disappearing. Feeling the inspector thinks her guilty Ellie aims to prove her innocence and get back in business, werewolf or not. After all a spell from a charlatan witch won't fix that leaky thatched roof!

POTIONS ARE FOR PUSHOVERS examines possibilities. It also deals with the desire to fit in...or not. Ellie has always been transient, never in one place for long, with few attachments. Aside from a connection to her siblings, she's a loner. But despite this rough, "I don't want or need anyone" we see that she does care and wants to fit in and have people like her. The book also looks at the importance of perception and how others see you, and each other.

I laughed at how Ellie got two apprentices she never wanted or needed and admire the exuberance of the two young ladies. Lenora is a great addition and I hope we see more of this bright girl. I absolutely love how the girls' research led to the possibility of a werewolf. Sarcastic humor and surprising depth of character are the hallmark of this series, along well placed barbs and eccentric behavior. The somewhat snarky comments and behavior is refreshing, especially as we see the goodness in the characters slowly sneaking out.

POTIONS ARE FOR PUSHOVERS is a delightfully complicated village mystery awash with community and societal expectations. There are lots of surprises along with a shocking ending that leaves me anxious to see what is in store for Ellie and the village!

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

5 stars, must-read.
Before I start, I gotta rant today about this novel. So let me start.

BEST NOVEL ON EARTH, I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LOVE IT MORE THAN ANYTHING ON EARTH. BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES TO THIS ONE. ITS AWESOME, FANTASTIC, MIND-BLOWING, HATS OFF TO THE AUTHOR.

As you all have probably guessed I loved the book. It was a fantastic blend of romance, mystery, thriller, fantasy, craziness and excitement. This book has a simple and basic starting with an introduction to the characters and some reference to the first book but you dont need to read it to enjoy this one.

The characters, the ideology, the framing, the writing… One day, this book will be a cosy mystery classic, take my word on that. I don’t know why they call this a cosy mystery, it had more twists and turns than a normal mystery does.

I am literally dying to read the 3rd book. I can’t wait for it. I loved this book. I read 65% book and forced myself to sleep at 4 am in the morning, then got up and finished the rest of the book from 65% to direct 100%.

I was obsessed with it. Dying to know the killer and all the suspense revolving around it. This is a real mystery with much cosiness and less stress, but I was stressed to find out the murderer and trust me till the end, I was totally wrong about the murderer and was actually shocked to find out the real one. I can’t write anymore or I might spill out some secrets of this book but this book has some great characters and is a classical piece of work.

Madame Eleanor is trying to build her life in an English village. Ring the town witch makes things interesting for her, but she truly wants to be accepted for herself. When a local woman is murdered, Ellie finds herself doing her best to help solve the murder, which leads her to discover missing animals and what appears to be a werewolf loose in the village.

As Ellie sleuths, her beloved Nicholas does his best to help her, though she is so self reliant it’s hard for her to accept his help. Through the course of her investigation. Ellie comes to find some villagers she wants to know better and build friendships with, but first she needs to find out which one is the murderer and which one is the werewolf...all before her own number is up.

I have read both books in this series and e joy seeing Ellie setting down roots and pushing behind her comfort level to become part of the community. Now to see her open her heart even more to Nicholas as she further establishes herself in the village. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

A well written and plotted mystery with characters that I grew to like. I hadn't gotten around to reading the first one first, but this worked well enough as a stand alone. I really got a kick out of Lenore and Rachel being Ellie's apprentices. I hadn't guessed the killer but it made total sense at the reveal. Ellie's cat Beast had gone missing, and while she feared the worst, what really happened had been something adorable which I won't reveal.

The only drawback for me with this book was that I'm not a fan of present tense writing which imho, takes too much extra brain power to convert it to normal tense. For me, present tense was a very awkward read. Again, it's only my opinion, and as you can tell by the star rating, I didn't let it keep me from recognizing a basically good story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a hardback copy of this book that was sent to me by Kensington Publishing, and my opinions are my own.

Elenor is turning over a new leaf, okay, not all the way over. She’s moved to England, living in Nicholas’ home village and set up shop as a witch. (Well at least she’s no longer ghost hunting). Peddling herbal love potions to try and keep a roof over her head, literally, Elenor is once again embroiled in a mystery what village meanie is murdered and possibly with one of Ellie’s potions. With rumors of werewolves, ghosts, animal sacrifices and Ellie trying to keep two teen mentees under control with their werewolf obsession, she has to solve this murder before becoming the next victim.

The books are light, fun, with an independent main character trying to figure out her place in the world and her relationship with Nicholas. There’s a touch of paranormal with her being able to hear the ghost of her dead sister, and enough clues and misdirections to keep you guessing on the real culprit.

It was an interesting book. It's a bit different in the characters, professions and location of the usual cozy mysteries. I enjoyed it. I did find that it was slow in spots. I liked the idea that the apprentices were investigating werewolves and the main suspect certainly seemed to fit that category. I was very surprised by who the bad guy was as he didn't really appear much in the rest of the book. I'd like to see the relationship between Eleanor and Nicholas develop a bit faster. #PotionsAreForPushovers #NetGalley

Potions Are for Pushovers is one of the most unique cozy mysteries I have read. Protagonist Eleanor Wilde is a fake psychic, yet this is one heck of a paranormal mystery. Tamara Berry's understanding of human nature creates an intricate psychological murder mystery while, at the same time, allowing all things to mirror back to the main characters. It hits you at many levels, and is funny while being smart.

Really about a 3.5. Intriguing premise with a prickly but plucky heroine, a fake psychic who solves people's problems. Had some problems with the prospect of dead animals so I put it aside for awhile but made it through. Nothing graphic, mostly mentions of dead animals-- well except for one. Liked the character development.

Another terrific entry in this fun (fake) paranormal series. Nicely narrated.

My favourite cozy mystery book.
The humour was so good and so does the romance between Nicholas and Eleanor.
I just love how eccentric she is.
I felt the murder was little extended rest it was good.

This was a fun book. Very different kind of series, but really interesting and really fun read. Very surprising twist at the end. Loved it!
