I'm Clark Cavanaugh: mind reader, bad-ass investigator, and half-fae with questionable taste in guys.
Just when I think life at the Crimson Court is finally calming down, a cunning stranger gives me an ultimatum. If I don't find and kill a rogue vampire within three days' time, my secret will be revealed to the world. Balor, my alluring fae prince, will finally learn the dark truth about my past.
Basically, I'm being blackmailed.
As if that weren't bad enough, the fight for Balor's throne is on. He needs my help, or he could lose his Court forever. But helping him means risking everything...
Now, I face an impossible choice. Do I stand by his side? Or do I run?
Jenna Wolfhart spends her days dreaming up stories about swoony fae kings and rugged blacksmiths. When she's not writing, she loves to do CrossFit competitions, rewatch Game of Thrones, collect Taylor Swift vinyls, and drink far too much coffee.
Jenna has always had a passion for writing, books, and publishing. Previously, she worked for an academic publisher in New York and then completed her PhD in Librarianship, focusing on young adult fiction.
Jenna now lives in England with her husband and her two dogs.
This is the third book in this series, and it is by far the best. Clark is such a great protagonist, and I am warming up to Balor. Not that I don’t like him, he just seems so distant. Events in this book changed that, however. Speaking of events in this book, we finally find out about Clark’s past and it’s a doozy. And, to be fair, the mystery wasn’t half bad either, even if it was a plot device to bring about the events at the end (which were also fascinating). This is my favorite series by this author, and I am so anxious to see what is going to happen next. I highly recommend this book!
I like this series and I still plan on finishing it; however I’m not too pleased with part of the direction of this book. I really like the tension between Clark and Balor and I’m tired of authors introducing other potential romantic interests in the middle of a series. It makes me think less of the main character when she supposedly has deep feelings towards Balor and yet is consistently fooling around with some random character for bullshit reasons. The whole thing reminds me of YA novels and the need to insert love triangles into every novel. I like my characters loyal. Even if they aren’t in a relationship with the romantic interest yet, I still can’t respect a character that says she feels one way and then does things like that. It honestly left a sour taste in my mouth towards the rest of the series. I was happy to finally find out what Clark was hiding and the significance of Balor and the Crimson Court to her secret, but I have a hard time enjoying the novel when that overshadowed a lot of the good in the novel for me.

The way Jenna writes about Clark makes the story feel very relatable with your heart bleeding for her dilemmas in life. Clark feels like such an ordinary woman, yet so original and special that no one could replace her. This is something Balor has to deal with as Clark’s light feet are on the run yet again. Her thoughts sway on her future being in the Crimson Court or if it is in solitude and on the run to be able to protect her secret. As a patron vampire shows up and demands blood, Clark has to take one of two decisions; either kill and keep hiding her secret or run and hope to be far away from Balor as the secret is unleashed. What will she do? While trying to get to grips with her Fae-Shifting ability, she runs out of time and finds herself in an even bigger problem. I love the Paranormal PI File books and this instalment didn’t disappoint. This is a highly recommended read.
Ok, what happened to Maeve? Are they just leaving her undead or did I miss them finding a sorcerer to turn her back? And if Clark can only read thoughts, what is stopping a person from thinking lies? And why doesn’t she use it more often, not just when commanded? I’d be like, that person is acting suspiciously - let’s see what they are thinking. And if she had just come clean to Balor, then the entire community wouldn’t have known about her past. And why, oh why would a grandmother send her only living relative to the same town/area as the ‘wronged party’ that is out to get her? Also Matteo’s son was killed and he isn’t filled with rage, wanting immediate vengeance? Seems a vampire would be a little less likely to listen to her explanation. I don’t know. This story just didn’t sit well for me, but I will try the next book.

Things seem to be turning around for Clark: she's getting a chance to figure out her shape-shifting, she settling into the Court, and maybe, just maybe, she has found some sort of balance with Balor and their possible romance. But then she's blackmailed and her worst fear, the truth about her past, might be released. The alliance is coming undone and Balor's throne is in danger. Can things get much worse?
Of course they can. There is action, more political intrigue, some questions answered and some heart-break. I can't wait until the next book comes out to see what happens next.
Clark Cavanaugh is running out of time. She has a secret that Prince Balor of the Crimson court would kill her for, so when a smooth talking vampire appears out of nowhere and blackmails her into killing someone to keep it she has a problem. Whats a girl to do? Intrigue and conspiracies roam wild in this instalment as everyone seems to be trying to unseat the uneasy truce between all the supernatural species, but when Clark is hauled before the vampire court on murder charges who will be there for her? Totally recommend reading this series!
This was really intense. Actually I had to stop at a point to be able to read further, the story was so high on a peak. Seems that Clark really rubbed on me, I felt her fears, felt how unsure shw she was and in the same time how strong and determined. The plot also was really strong and had its twists, we are closer now to Clark's other side and we know more about her past and also about Balor. The ending? Strong as well. I need the final book already.
I have read the other two of these books and quite enjoyed them. That being said...this has by far been my favorite. You finally learn so much about Clark. You come full circle in her fears and doubts, of what makes her afraid to let he guard down as well as her powers. I am on pins and needles waiting to the next book! This us an awesome series that just seems to be getting better! Keep it coming and thank you for writing such a great story!
Absolutely loved this book! Tons of intrigue as Clark and Balor try to save the alliance between the supernatural factions of London. A black market ring to bust up, prisoners to save and Clark’s worst fear her secret is revealed. Fabulous story! Can’t wait to see what happens in book 4!
This story continues the trials and tribulations of our heroes. They are beset by problems with vampires and shifters as they try to solve a crime group with stolen werewolf blood - a poison. Clark also has to co e face-to-face with you deep, dark secret. There is a lot of action and good character interaction.
Betrayals and secrets come to light stirring things up in this third installment. I had a hard time putting this down wondering which direction things would go. So much happened I’m excited to see how things play out. I certainly can’t wait for more!
This is a really enjoyable series, the page counts are a lot shorter than I typically read, but I am actually enjoying the heroine and I am interested in continuing the series.
Holy cow! Gah! Clark! What a crazy rollercoaster! From helping the vampires then the shifters and then to be on trial. Wtf?! Ronan...heyyy lol ready for the next book that's for sure!
I absolutely love this series. Clark is amazing and and the forbidden romance between her and Balor has me on the edge of my seat. I’m so glad that I finally know some of what Clark has been hiding. This is such a wonderful series and I can’t wait for the next book.
This book allows us a peek into Clark's past. We discover her secret as well as her shifter form. Therevwas tension throughout of will she tell Balor or will she be outed. How will he reacted? Overall a great book that leaves me wondering what will happen next.
Well. I know something bug was coming, but I didn't think that was it. I love a real surprise twist. I'm pretty sure we're gearing up for Clark being the next Morrigan, but that's pretty cool too.
But isn’t that always the way? I’m glad we finally found out that secret. Now we can move on to her others - her dad, the ravens, the allure, and there’s probably more the author will throw our way. I’ll enjoy catching them.
I have been waiting on this aspect of the story!!! One of my biggest questions answered but still even more questions now!!! I am so ready for the next one!
I read this series based on a recommendation and I am so glad I did. The way Jenna Wolfhart has unfolded the storyline over the first 3 books is nothing short of AMAZING!
