First a bank robbery in Peachtree City…and now a dead body in Brooks? Business is booming at Mary’s new sweets shop in the small town of Brooks. So much so that she’s able to pay her grandson Tripp a nice little paycheck for helping out. Unfortunately, when they head to the bank to deposit his check, Mary and Tripp get caught up in the middle of a bank robbery gone awry. Then a few days later, Officer Preston and Tripp discover a dead body in Lake Horton! Looks like Mary and Officer Preston are going to be back at it again as the detective duo try to figure out who did it…and whether or not there’s a link between the two cases. With all that’s going on, will Mary be able to help Officer Preston figure out the cases? And keep the shop stocked full of her latest hot item – mini key lime pies?
Maisy Morgan is a retired nurse and single mother of a set of pre-teen twin boys. She has been an avid reader since she was a child. After retirement she tried writing and found mysteries fascinated her. Some of her best work came from real life stories when she had worked in the ER. Patients who find themselves in unplanned and serious situations didn't mind sharing their stories with a kind face that is willing to listen.
The plot and characters were interesting, but damn, did this need an editor! Preferably one who speaks English and understands the significance of the Mark Twain quote, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter - 'tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning."
Mary and her grandson Tripp are getting adjusted to their new hometown of Brooks. The sweet shop business seems to be booming and Mary has decided to pay Tripp for all of his hard work. When they head to the bank to deposit his check, they find themselves in the middle of a bank robbery that soon goes wrong. Two of the robberies are shot dead, but one escapes with a bag full of money.
A few days later Officer Preston and Tripp go fishing and discover a body in the lake. Imagine Mary and Preston’s surprise when the victim somehow has ties to the bank robbery. Now the duo team up once again to solve a mystery before more bodies turn up.
My favorite parts of this series are the characters. Mary, a 50-something grandma, who finds herself raising her 14-year-old grandson Tripp. Officer Preston, the small town police officer that is starting a budding friendship/romance with Mary. Cindy and her young daughter Hannah, who have become close friends with Mary and Tripp. Then there is Draco, a strange and quirky young man that befriends Tripp. This new series has the perfect mix of humor, mystery, storyline/plot, quirky characters, and a lot of adventure.
Another great read. A plot that will have you wondering who, how and why (although i did have my suspicions on the mastermid) greed, revenge and murder mixed into a plot that is also filled with some of the heartbreaks that families can cause by their narrow-mindedness and throwaway remarks. Loved the way that the two are blended into a smooth read whilst the characters are a mixed bunch of different ages that display the arrogance that youth knows all. A trip to the bank should have been a quick trip if not for the fact that she and her grandson now find themselves in a bank robbery situation. Luckily apart from two of the three bank robbers no-one was badly hurt even if one robber got away. Now there is a manhunt going on but Tripping and Preston are still determined to go on their fishing trip. That is until a body bumps into their boat. The body of a man they saw only a short while ago. Fights, money, the unexpected arrival of her ex-husband, three teenagers determined to have their own way and a shoot out. Will they all come out older and wiser but physically unscathed?
Key Lime Pie was a fun weekend afternoon read. I enjoy the books in this series. The main characters (Hannah (in wheelchair), her Mom, Mary, Tripp, Officer Preston, Drago and his family) are very interesting and well portrayed. The action is busy in this story - both a bank robbery (while Mary & Tripp are at the bank) and a murder. Are they connected? Will Mary and Officer Preston work the case together? Lots of twists in this plot. The killer may not be who you suspect! If you are looking for a good cozy, I recommend this one.
Didn’t want this book to end! Mary and Preston are such a great team solving murder mysteries together, they are a great pair of characters. The kids are so fun in this story from Draco and his quirkiness to how they all help each other like only best friends do. The author does a incredible job of plotting the murder, adding into the story the dessert shop and Mary’s history with her family. This book will pull you in from page one and will have you sorry it’s the end. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Things are always happening, bad things, even in small towns. First, a bank robbery while Mary and her grandson are at the bank. Then a dead body is floating in the lake while Officer Preston and Mary's grandson, Tripp, are fishing in a boat. Though Mary owns a sweet treats shop, she always is helpful to Preston in solving crimes as she previously was an investigative reporter. This is a great story just as the first book in the series. It's very well written, thrilling, and totally entertaining. Highly recommend.
This is a fabulous book. There is so much going on, including the bank robbery/hostage situation and a body being found. There is something else major that happens, but I will let you find that out for yourself. I enjoyed the closeness between Tripp, Hannah and Draco. They are the kind of friends I wish I had had growing up. I laughed a lot while reading this book I think it was the laughs that kept me up all night, reading to the end. I can't wait for Book Three in the series!
I like the plots of the books but they need some editing. I gave the first book five stars and overlooked the flaws. However, there seemed to be more in this book. There are also some continuity issues. In one scene Hannah is in her electric wheelchair at church but then later in the same scene they cannot do something because she is not in her electric wheelchair.
Ex-husbands and twins play roles in this second book in th series. Mary and Tripp become closer and Preston becomes closer to both. We meet Draco’s family. Of course there is a murder to solve and there are hints Lily may be part of the next book. A good solid read.
I love Mary and Tripp’s relationship. They are a wonderful family that gets involved in unusual projects. I love the friendship between Cindy and Mary and like the one with Tripp and his friends. Preston is a good friend to them. Hope the next book comes out soon. The key lime pies sounded delicious.
I love the characters, the morals throughout the entire story. It was a surprise ending for me, which was great because a lot of time I can figure it out. Can't wait till book three.
I enjoyed Sweet Revenge, the first book in this series, but was disappointed by this second book. I noticed several editing errors and also got tired of all the 'smirking' looks by many characters.
A good little read. It's a story about Mary who moves to the small town of Brooks with her grandson Tripp, to follow her dream and open a sweet shop (cakes in the UK). All goes well until there is a robbery at the bank and then a murder. It's East read and made me smile.
