The Welcome Retreat is a wonderful gift. I believe it is a huge part of why my current parish is vibrant, active, and engaged as a community. The book is a wonderful deep dive into a spiritual formation process that will truly lead you closer to Christ if you follow the process.

However, within the book there are holes in helping the team through the retreat planning process. Little things like the Formation Leader meeting with Witness givers each week doesn’t get more than a sentence in the book. I had to email Dynamic Catholic to figure out what that actually entailed. I feel like each team role should be explained in greater detail, rather than having the same exact brief description in 2 different places in the book. It would have helped tremendously in delegating jobs and tasks if the descriptions were longer and more thorough.

There are also issues with the Welcome retreat model itself - asking the retreat participants to go from 8 AM to midnight on Saturday is honestly unrealistic - our women were completely exhausted by 9:30 pm. This is just one among a few hangups I have with the model itself. That being said, the retreat is an amazing, transformative experience. This is just a review of the book itself.

There are SO many things this retreat and this book get RIGHT. But you need a team who is committed, creative, passionate, and willing to work together to really do it well. While the book is great for the formation process, I wish it was a bit more thorough to help the team pull off a successful retreat.

A good first edition. This book made running our semi-annual retreats—which have been occurring for more than forty years—easier to do than the old manual did. The book focuses more on evangelization and church growth and less on interior life and personal relationship with Christ than I would prefer, but our team got a lot from the process and the book even as it is.

An excellent guide to lighting a fire I thought was dormant. Recommend a welcome retreat for anyone desiring a closer relationship with Jesus and becoming a better version of yourself.
