I met him at the end of my sword.

Not the most romantic of introductions but it suited us. We're both warriors; he's a lord of the Wild Hunt of Fairy, and I'm an extinguisher—a psychic soldier trained from birth to protect our world from his kind. Attraction arced between us like lightning. I saw it in his eyes, watched them shift from frigid silver to molten metal. Despite all of that, I knew it could go nowhere. Fairies killed my mother and her death nearly destroyed my father. Then there's the fact that extinguishers don't date outside our society. A human would be bad enough, but a fairy? That's not just frowned upon, it's forbidden. We cannot be together. It's impossible. And that's fine. I've got bigger things to worry about. Like my new charge: a dryad who just informed us of a fairy plot to exterminate the human race. I'll focus on her and ignore the wild thrumming of my blood every time I look at him. I'm a professional; I can handle one arrogant, annoying, stubborn, dangerously sexy fairy hunter who won't stop staring at me as if I'm already his. I'm not one of his delicate, Fey ladies, longing to swoon into his arms. I carry an iron sword and iron is poison to Fairies. If he gets too close, he'll be the one swooning.

Why am I hitting this streak of really shitty books these days?

This was another book that had the potential to be really great but this fell short with one main fatal flaw.

Well, actually there were several.

Let's start with the author ignoring a lot of the mythology surrounding faeries. There is a significant amount of lore around these beings and there are several tried and true rules that you sort of have to follow when dealing with their stories. It's sort of like having a vampire that doesn't suck blood. If you don't follow these rules, are they really faeries? The ones that stand out are 1) You don't accept food from faeries. 2) You don't make deals with faeries or express thanks because they can use that against you. 3) Faeries stealing human babies and leaving changelings.

Every single one of these was left out.

It didn't feel like you were dealing with faeries. There was no trickery or anything. They were just pretty and immortal and had superpowers. So you have these perfect beings with very few downsides or flaws. It doesn't make for very compelling character building. If they are already perfect, then what is the point of the book?

Also, the description of everybodys' eyes. Look, I get it. Everybody is a special little unique snowflake.

However, having fucking stars in your eyes makes you a goddamn anime character.

This book makes fun of Twilight but it is doing the exact same fucking thing. Especially since the main character really isn't much better than Bella Swan. She's pretty, unique, all the men love her, and super talented at like, everything!!!! She's not relatable at all and I was not able to connect with her.

Moving onto the worst part of the book, in my opinion.

The insta-love.

At that point, I was over it. All these characters had done in the book was make out and bone. There wasn't a development of a story line there. There was no chemistry. It was like the author was forcing it upon the reader and I definitely could have done without it.

This had potential but these flaws really did ruin it for me. Or I'm just picky and crazy. That being said, I couldn't read this author's other series either so maybe this style just isn't for me in the long run.

First let me say that this book is free, in ebook edition, every 10th of the month, on Amazon (ex. 1/10/17). Fairy-Struck is the first book in my second series, The Twilight Court Series. I was well into my first series when the idea of a true fairy's tale came to me. I wanted something gritty, yet vibrant and full of fantasy. A tough girl's fairy tale. I also wanted to be true to the old myths about fairies, bringing in stories from around the globe, while putting a new twist on them. I came up with the idea of an old war between humans and fairies, ending in a truce which must be enforced. Seren is one of the human enforcers, an extinguisher, called so for their ability to extinguish the light of a Shining One (another name for a fairy). She's strong with a quick wit, and a tough facade hiding a caring nature. Although she's an extinguisher, a psychic warrior who monitors the fey, she doesn't know as much about the Shining Ones as she thinks. Seren leads us through the hidden world of the Fey as she herself uncovers their secrets. The book begins with two courts of fairies; Seelie and Unseelie. But it goes so much further than that. There is intrigue and espionage, assassinations and war, monsters and magical men, deep seeded hatred and immortal love. I hope you'll enjoy the roller-coaster ride into the world of the Twilight Court.

this one was such a wild ride :) and yet I had the best time reading this book :) in the end I gave it 4 stars and will definitely pick up the sequel to see where are we gonna go from here… and then we shall see ;) yes, it was ridiculous and yes, a lot of the time things were happening way too fast both when it comes to events and surprising twists, as well as character development or building all sorts of relationships and connections… and yet… ;) it was hella entertaining :) it fit perfectly to the mood I was in when I picked it up and I liked that it wasn’t taking itself too seriously… it starts as more of an urban fantasy / paranormal kind of a story, and then we hit a bit of a twist around 30% or so that makes it more into like fantasy-fantasy sort of a book :) Seren is a pretty good main character, but she’s definitely one of those “special little snowflakes'' who are just so unique and powerful… again, it wasn’t annoying to me, but I know it’s a trope some people don’t like… I will definitely give the sequel a try and see where it’s gonna go, but I’m not gonna lie… Amy Sumida has a very entertaining and fast paced writing style and she might be the perfect author to pick up between more serious books :)

This was good but not great.

Fairy-Struck had a great synopsis and I was ready to dive into a fun, reverse-harem, bad-ass fairy story. However, this book didn't actually have much reverse-harem stuff at all, and I almost can't see why it was classified as a reverse-harem novel. The characters were ok but kinda a bit too good and mighty, and I also didn't like the (one) love interest too much.

Still, this book was entertaining and free, so thanks to amazon kindle and the author for that!

i enjoyed fairy-struck, so don't get the wrong idea when this starts off sounding bad...

well, first i thought the lead character sounded much younger than her supposed 26 years. um, that could be because i recently read a paranormal "sky high" kind of thing... (it CAN'T be because i'm getting old...!) BUT later in the story i really started to enjoy her really snarky attitude.

secondly, i was looking for a book/series that would deal with the culture and society of the fae, somewhat like the laurel k hamilton meredith gentry series, but without so much sex. and looking to AVOID the 'surprise, you're really a long lost fairy princess' schtick.
oops.

BUT, this one was a really good 'surprise, you're really a long lost fairy princess' story, because it was NOT some angsting teen, and because it was a snarky older-than-a-teen fairy hunter. i mean, seriously? "fairy twilight princess"!? feel free to roll your eyes, because the main character does, too.

(sorry, but i suck at remembering names.)

(typo cop says book was well-edited and without memorable errors, if any.)

This story begins when the heroine gets a strange job from the Fairy council to assassinate one of their own. She knows this is very odd and that something is not right with it. But, she must continue on with her father's wishes. However, when the truth comes out her whole world will be thrown out of wack.

This was very good. I enjoyed the plot line and I really liked the main characters as well. The only thing that sort of worries me is the heroine will be cheated on. I don't know this for sure, but I'm scared it could happen and I hate that. But, I will keep reading and crossing my fingers that it won't happen.

Boring. Nothing interesting happening, I feel like I've read better versions of this story many times before. Zero sexual tension, plot has no urgency or sense of impending doom. I stopped 50% through because I just didn't care enough to read any more.

It was for free on Amazon!

It was ok. I liked how unique the world is and the writing is good as well. But i didn't connect with any of the characters and was kinda bored. I might read the next book in the series to see what happens next but i'm not sure yet.

When I started reading I thought the story would be a different one, so that was a surprise. All in all, the story was quite good, but not great. I love it when the feelings of the characters are expressed in a way that I feel with them -this unfortunately did not happen here.
It bothered me a little that several of the characters accepted huge changes a bit too quickly. For instance

So there is a peace between the humans and the fae that is maintained by councils. Seren is an Extinguisher and she carries out punishments to fae law breakers. Soon she finds out that her life is a lie and her true destiny lays in faerie with her real father.

I liked the start of this. I like the background, the world building, and I liked Seren. Then she went to Faery and things got weird. She accepted the fact that her mother not only cheated on her dad once to conceive her but she maintained an extra marital relationship up until her death it seems. That was just really messed up and I couldn't understand her lack of outrage. Then the whole scene with her cousin/forced betrothed happened and I couldn't continue. He goes from being a sadistic pervert to crying for his mommy and somehow is convinced that Seren is his mother.....umm yeah. Everything I liked about this just went out the window,

What did I expect for a Kindle freebie?

A fast read. Shallow. Perhaps "chick lit.?" Definitely a fairy tale where the fey are not especially good fey. The author likes her characters to have sex. Except for that, I'd almost characterize this as YA, though to be honest, I really don't know what puts books into the YA category.

First person point of view where all the males that the heroine meet are "hot."

Ten books in this series? You have to be kidding.

So Fairy-Struck is about a human extinguisher names Seren, who has the abilities of both her families.
Seren has all these very strong gifts that she believes she got off her mother and father, which is true, except her father isnt really her father. It turns out that Seren is Princess of the Twilight Kingdom, a Fae Kingdom. The same species shes spent her whole life training to kill, when given the orders.

The book follows Seren on her journey to discover who and what she is, along with getting to know her biological dad, and her lingering feelings for the super hot noble fae Tiernan. She also has to deal with her crazy new family who are dead set on killing her.

I wasnt sure if i was going to like this series, so i put it off for so long. I really regret doing so, it was actually captivating, interesting, funny and hot! I loved reading it!

The first few books are just one on one romance, but it is designed to be a Reverse Harem.

I am being generous with the stars because it has major potential, decent characters with their own personalities and issues, Sumida not only took bits and pieces of previous Fey lore but also added her own to it. I'm on the third book right now and forgot I needed to do the review for the first..so here I am. Nope it hasn't gotten any better in my opinion. The issues I had with the first book are still very very present, my main issue and it's one that makes me skim over many many pages instead of actually reading...Sumida puts so much description into people, clothing, places, lights, buildings to the point of wanting to pull my hair out...yet the sex is the least descriptive thing, the fighting isn't even as descriptive as a damn building. But I'm not a quitter and am really hopeful that the series gets a little better (less descriptions of stuff explained in previous books would be nice...they aren't that far apart.

This was an enjoyable slow build reverse harem. There's one love interest currently, but you can guess who at least three of the others.
The MC Selene is quite impatient and a little impulsive, and very good at kicking butt. There's a little bit of banter in here for levity, and the trickster-type characters too.
It starts as an urban fantasy, then moves to pretty much straight fantasy over in the fae lands. Quite a bit happens in here, but it just seemed to drag for me. I do find with UF books I tend to not enjoy the first book as much as the rest of the series, so it could just be me.

I really enjoyed this fairy book. I know some people don't like when authors change things up but I do. I love when they make things uniquely theirs. I know most fairy stories only have the two courts but I have read some with several others added (including the Twilight Court included in this tale). I loved that the Twilight Court were the peacekeepers. The characters are fun and I enjoyed reading their story. Overall, I enjoyed the story and I will definitely read more of the series.

Tough one to rate...

In all honesty, I'd given this one 2 stars if it were not for the fact that the author has a really good writing style. So I tried to be fair.
That being said, this one didn't cut it for me. The best I can say is that it seems to be a Young Adult novel that tries to be an adult fantasy novel? Two main things that distracted me constantly were:
1- my hopes for a good intrigue constantly crushed
2- the attempts at erotic scenes that were merely weirdly worded romantic hotness of some kind where we're left in between and not knowing what to make out of it. Bleh...

So, to the intrigue mostly: lots and lots of potential, great great characters (even though they're all very cliché, chiseled from the mold of perfection and so on...). The problem is everything is flat out easy, the political intrigues that should take place are not really developped, the dire situations are resolved with a snap of your fingers in a few lines, and we're left with something a 10 year old could follow along happily without any wants for anticipation.
I was ready to throw the towel after 10% in the book. Kept plowing, hoping for better stuff later on but never found any pace or original element to fuel my hopes after that. There was almost a moment around 70% in, with Serena's "duty" to become an ambassador between the human realm and Fairy. That woke me up for a hot second. And then this fell flat too. Urgh!!! I really wanted this series to work for me, but nope. Disappointed.

Also, what's with 20% of material being a bunch of previews??? Okay, cool, I get to discover the author's series... But that was a ton of added unnecessary material...
That being said, the God Hunter series seems promising? I'll see how I feel about giving it a shot.

Marginally better than Godhunter

After reading the other reviews I was sure that I was in for a treat....I was wrong. The characters were not very well developed and Seren's reactions were unrealistic at best, patently false at worst. The world building was ok if you went into the story understanding the basics, but it was all tell and no show. The author whines at the end about being a "poor self-published author" and asks that we forgive her writing mistakes, but all that's required to fix them is grammar check and critical reading. If an author cannot manage even that, how much respect do they truly have for their readers?

For those who compared this series to the Merry Gentry series by LKH, you couldn't be more wrong. Yes, they are both RH set in Faerie, but that's it. Do not read this book expecting the same level of writing, you will be sorely disappointed.

Fairy Good

Unique story with fae. Characters are good but could be more, world building is well done, suspense, action, unique surprises and romance. Some areas have a little much on descriptions but still a good read. I hope the next book is better.

I so badly wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t.
1. What happened to Seren and her original dad? – what? She wasn’t upset? Or does she change dads like she changes underwear?
2. What happened to the Brandon? (Was that his name?)
3. Does Seren even like Tiernan? Because it doesn’t seem like it.
4. Is Seren mother Teresa?
5. So, you can talk about fairies getting raped and whathaveyas and uncles wanting to “fuck” their niece but you don’t want to give a wee bit more detail with Seren in Tiernan??
I honestly could go on and on and on, but I have already wasted a day and a half reading this and I got nothing left in me.

This was a freebie for me and I wasn’t sure what to think of it. I hadn’t heard of Amy as an author before and I am addicted.

I am so glad that I got this book and that I gave it a read. I was very impressed with the storyline and the characters. Good and bad characters too. Both make the story so interesting and intriguing.

There's action, there's romance, and there's a ton of girl power. It's fun and kept me reading...and yet, it missed on some marks too.

As an Extinguisher, it's this MCs job to make sure the fairies behave when involved in the human world. This girl lost her mother to a bunch of fairies and has developed a hate for them. When a raid leads her to a potential fairy threat that could wipe out humanity, she goes against her better judgement and protects a fairy to escort her to the council. She also runs into the leader of the Wild Hunt...a super hot fairy who can't take his eyes off of her. Soon, it becomes clear that attacks are directed at her, and a fairy wants her dead.

This book is exciting, has tons of potential, and definitely keeps the tension high. It weaves with plots, adds magic, and mixes in a delicious mix of fairies. There's power, there's romance, and there's intrigue. And yet, there are holes which keep it from becoming super great. The first would be the instant love. Every guy (who matters), sees her and wants her...or promises his never-wavering loyalty. They flirt with her, love her, and she finds each one super attractive. Now, this is also sold as a reverse-harem, which demands that some of these characteristics exist...but it was a bit overboard and I would have liked to see more reverse-harem going on, in that case.

Secondly, this young woman pulls off every amazing moment perfectly. She doesn't have any learning curves when she discovers her powers, and all problems she faces are solved the moment she lifts her pinky. I find such characters difficult to connect to and lacking a little arc, but it wasn't nearly enough to make me put the book down, either.

And then, there are some story holes, where problems or circumstances dissipate a bit too quickly without enough reason that they do so.

But to say this isn't worth a read would be wrong too. I enjoyed it quite a bit most of the way through and definitely found it entertaining.
