The hit comic book series based on Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's hilarious [adult swim] animated show RICK & MORTY is now available in its first collection!
Join the excitement as depraved genius Rick Sanchez embarks on insane adventures with his awkward grandson Morty across the universe and across time. Caught in the crossfire are his teenage granddaughter Summer, his veterinary surgeon daughter Beth, and his hapless son-in-law Jerry. This collection features the first five issues of the comic book series, including "The Wubba Lubba Dub Dub of Wall Street," "Mort-Balls!" and more, along with hilarious mini-comics showcasing the whole family.
Zac Gorman is an author and cartoonist from Michigan. He received an Emmy for his work on Over the Garden Wall (Outstanding Animated Series, 2015) and was nominated for an Annie Award for his character design work on Welcome to the Wayne.
For some reason, his webcomic Magical Game Time was archived by the Library of Congress.
This is the freaking best animated series ever and the comics are great too. Philosophic, full of black comedy, innuendos, remaking of many tropes, film ideas and creation of own tropes, social critic, unique wit, etc. As if the good concepts of south park, family guy, drawn together, american dad, bobs burger, etc. would have been even improved and mixed with all of pop-cultural knowledge about Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
While other shows are just scratching on the surface of this messy thing called human culture, Rick and Morty goes all in and combines the dirty, extreme minds in action with the building blocks of societies and cultures that make humans act as they do, may it be 2 or 2 billion. This is art, this is so great it should get all available prices, this would make the world so much better is everyone would be forced to watch it clockwork orange style, probably under some mild drugs with less, acceptable long term consequences and traumas. . Go, read and watch it immediately, get schwifty and thank me later! Just check the IMDb, Metacritic and rotten tomatoes ratings, omg, wtf, I am just drifting off in a little bit of fanboy frenzy.
The long-time potential is immense, cause the setting allows nearly anything, from just referencing, making whole episodes under a special theme, changing from extreme to philosophic, self-referencing to using the endless source of old and permanently developing Sci-Fi and Fantasy ideas.
Tropes show how literature is conceived and which mixture of elements makes works and genres unique. And look how many of them the ingenuine creators have used, they can´t even be loaded at once cause it would crash the system, they had to make subfolders to fit the greatness, isn´t this unbelievable. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...
People who can't deal with quite extreme content, violence and language should probably avoid the series. If you still haven´t watched it (you lucky, enviable person), here are some appetizers:
Can’t get enough Rick and Morty in your life? You’re not alone. Well, you probably are alone, and you’ll definitely die alone, but maybe you won’t feel so lonely with your boon companions Rick and Morty there by your side. Perhaps they’ll distract you from the realization that your meager existence is meaningless, in the grand scheme of things. That you’re nothing more than a bag of meat, sitting on a rock in outer space, completely insignificant in the face of the cosmos. That there’s no escaping the crippling, soul-crushing loneliness that’s slowly devouring you.
But hey, if you do feel compelled to cling to even the most fleeting moments of joy in your otherwise endless cycle of torment and pain, check out this comic—it’s a nice companion piece to the show!
To avoid any continuity issues with the TV series and fully exploit their artist license the creators of the comic cleverly chose to follow a Rick and Morty from a parallel universe. Although from what I’ve read, they have since abandoned that not so clever strategy, instead choosing to portray the “off-screen adventures” of the original Rick and Morty.
Even though this volume followed an alternate version of the duo, the dialogue felt spot-on. So it was virtually impossible to read this without hearing all the character voices in my head—which is one neat trick if you ask me. That fact alone made it worthwhile, even when some of their adventures were lackluster.
My biggest complaint is that they tried to cram too many stories into a rather slim package, so the storytelling often felt rushed. Hell, half of the issues even had a tiny four-page Summer or Beth adventure squeezed in at the end. I would have much preferred a single story arc, stretched over the entire volume, to all those snippets, but maybe that’s just me. 🤷♂️
But anyhow, please allow me a chance to redeem myself for the depressing way I began this review, by ending things on a positive note.
Looking back, do you ever wonder why the summers of your childhood seemed to last forever while these last few years have flown right by? Believe it or not, your perception of time is skewed. Your perception is intrinsically linked to your age, so the older you grow the faster time seems to fly. Therefore, not only does your crippling, soul-crushing loneliness have an expiration date, but it’s ever-accelerating! So, perhaps you can take solace in the thought that, if the premise of Rick and Morty is correct and we are living in a multiverse, statistically speaking, there’s a better version of you out there somewhere living life to the fullest. So, what’s your excuse, meatbag!
A decent extension of the cartoon. Gorman has the spirit of the show down if not the humor. If you're looking for more Rick & Morty between the very long season breaks to get schwifty to, this isn't a bad place to find it.
You - urp- want to be dis-disappointed? That’s how it happens. You compare the out out of an insane - a writers’ room full of clinically schizo people, hearing actual voices and shit - to the work of one writer, alone in his shitty apartment with his lonely existential thoughts, and you expect Shakespeare from one monkey at a Bluetooth keyboard?
You people, you disappoint me you giant wastes of skin cells. You should just go back to your pathetic vinyl-covered dining room chairs - that aren’t even in a real Dining Room, yo - and you should contemplate you pathetic meaningless existence until you catch an ice case of cancer and die a slow, misery-inducing death. Would you like this comic then, you sad little idiot?
Some fun one&done’s, and a couple of longer stories that get hella dark. Good.
"The best part of waking up is betrayal in your gosh dang cup!" I'm totally freaking obsessed with Rick and Morty. Has to be one of my favorite shows on Adult Swim. When I found out it was in comic form.... my heart skipped a beat and then I got driggity drunk y'all. Dan Harmon is a pure fucking genius and Shut Up, Jerry! No one was talking to you!
As an unabashed Rick and Morty fangirl, imagine my surprise when I realised that R&M comics exist. So I grabbed the first copy I could lay my hands on (not unlike Morty grabbed Jessica's little Morties) and boy, was I amazed?!
Also, ? In Bird Culture, this is considered a dick move.
Alsox2, 4 stars because, It's just Rick and Morty! Ruh-ick and Morty and their adventures, Morty! Rick and Morty forever and forever, 100 years, Rick and Morty's things! Me and Rick and Morty running around and... Rick and Morty time! All day long, forever... all- a hundred days! Rick and Morty forever a hundred times! Over and over, rickandmortyadventures.com. www.rickandmorty.com. www.rickandmortyadventures. All 100 years. Every minute, rickandmorty.com. www.100timesrickandmorty.com. <3 <3 <3
It was fun to dive back into the crazy world of Rick and Morty and there were short funny stories on other family members here and there. Very nice read and I am looking forward to reading the next volumes of the series.
I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
If you are like me, you can't get enough of "Rick & Morty" and their blend of gross, hilarious, existential adventures through space and various dimensions.
The comics came out between season 2 and 3, probably to help the rabid fan base pass the time a little easier. The drawings are not as sharp as they are in the animated series, which is why I docked a star: it makes the whole things feels a little bit rushed. But it is as hysterical, weird and perfectly timed as the show. It is a perfect companion to what just might be the best thing on TV.
While not as good as the tv show, this graphic novel is a great substitute for fans of the Rick & Morty who are impatiently waiting for the next season. The dialogue felt very similar to the show, full of irreverent comments and dark humour. I particularly enjoyed the "shorts" featured at the end of this volume.
Most TV to comic adaptations suck. This one is not so bad and I could see the writers getting better as this title goes on.
What really helps this comic is the conceit of "infinite timelines" that Rick and Morty have. As a result, the comics can focus on a Rick and Morty from another dimension and not have to worry about their stories clashing with "canon" of the TV series or any developments that occur their. This frees up the writers and the readers equally, since we do not have to wonder where any of this would occur within the framework of the show.
I recently discovered and binged the three seasons of Rick and Morty on Hulu. This comic is not quite up to the show's standards, but it's a nice way to pass the time until a new season comes.
Rick and Morty Vol: 1, was different teehee. This isn't going to be a long review because there isn't much to say about this first volume. Will I read the sequel? Sure. It is silly and was easy to read.
Rick and Morty are a strange pair. Rick is Morty's maternal grandpa. Morty calls him by his first name which is strange. He also calls his father Jerry, by his first name. I haven't seen Morty talk to his mom so I'm not sure if everyone is just on first name basis.
Rick is a scientist/inventor who has the ability to cross dimensions and times. He knows aliens. Not sure how or why all of this happens and why the family is totally cool with this. Morty is 13 and Rick's side-kick. They have a pretty good relationship in the fact that they care about each other. Oh and Rick is usually drinking, buzzed, drunk or a clone.
I haven't seen the t.v. version of this graphic novel, but I am curious to watch it. If you like silly adult humor and sci-fi I'd try out this series.
This has pretty much the same feel as the show. It doesn't really get into the same level of dark humor as the show, unfortunately. Each issue is its own self contained story, for good and for worse. If one doesn't work for you, you can turn to the next one and maybe that one will. It's like the show in that regard.
The only story I didn't care for was the one where Rick was like a farmer with alien orphans tending his crops. The ending was pretty strong but the issue overall just wasn't that interesting.
It's a recommend if you love the show and want more of this world. So far, there weren't any in depth side plots containing the rest of the family, though.
How to pass time while we wait for the next episode to come? Well, why not read the comics based on the hit show then and this one definitely hit the same notes but obviously the animation is better with sound and everything but it is still nice to enjoy the story in a different format. I loved reading the volume the second time around and o tell you the truth I hardly remembered reading this and it was lucky that I got to read the book again. I shall be continuing the next volumes soon and then would just Keep on Reading.

A great first volume, I love the TV show, and this was on the same level, I could hear eat of their voices as I was reading it, "oh jeeeez I dono Rick" ha!
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
This first volume of the Rick & Morty comic book series is pretty good; it's a property that translates well to comics, and Gorman's humor is pretty much right in line with the show. There's actually a bit of metacommentary in it that feels a bit TOO aware from Morty, but that's only a minor misstep. There are a lot of ideas here, but a lot of them don't get the time they need to develop (the idea of the prison labyrinth could have been a volume on its own, but it doesn't even fill a whole issue), and the use of a copycat creature is a cheap out that gets overused. Still, the art is pretty much spot on, the humor mostly works, the dream story works well, and most of the shorts make good use of their limited space. All in all, a good start.
Do not expect the same kind of humor that you get in the show, (even though it tries hard to deliver and it shows) and overall it's ok to read with nothing exciting or that much fun happening, you're not going to laugh or anything, it's just ok and I guess some scenes fun to read.
Hoping it finds its footing and it's going to get better with the next one!
I'm sorry but this captures about a fraction of what the TV show contains. The jokes aren't really very funny and most of these "stories" don't even have an ending or any kind of resolution. It wasn't egregious or anything and it took about 30 minutes to read from front to back, but as supplementary material, this added almost nothing.
I really enjoyed this comic and glad that it still has the same smart humor that the show has, but I will still say that the show is better. But it’s at least a good way to tie fans over through the long wait for season 4.
