Charlie Rhodes is living the high life… at least for her. She lucked into a new apartment, her boyfriend Jack is attentive and sweet, and she’s about to head to the Big Easy to hunt for zombies.
Yes, a multitude of dreams are about to come true.
Charlie has never been to New Orleans and she’s in awe of everything she sees. Jack is determined to make sure she has a good time, which means authentic food, music and haunted tours. He’s happy just to be with her as she investigates the city.
The one sore spot of the trip is the talk of zombies. Jack doesn’t believe they exist. Charlie and their boss think it’s possible. Oh, yeah, and dead bodies are rising all over town and no one can explain why.
Charlie is at a crossroads in her life. She has magic at her disposal and the people in New Orleans might be the only ones with answers as to why she is the way she is. The question is: Who to trust? The closer Charlie and Jack get, the more she realizes she has to tell him the truth. She’s running out of time, though. She needs to protect the people she cares about most and solve an unthinkable crime. She has no idea how to do it.
New Orleans is a magical city and Charlie is a magical girl. She can’t hide forever, though. The truth will come out with at least one person… she just has to survive long enough to explain her side of things in the aftermath.
That’s not a given in a world where the dead are rising… and trying to kill everybody they come in contact with.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
As usual the story is pretty decent. Charlie is a fun character, but Jack is horrible. He treats Charlie like dirt, acts like a petulant child, constantly insults and belittles her both in public and in private...and she is fine with it. He is extraordinarily narcissistic, manipulative, and passive aggressive. I get that Charlie is young and doesn't pick up on it, but I am glad they are not real people because this is clearly an emotionally abusive relationship...Further, he is so immature that he has the inability to just keep his mouth shut when he does not agree with what is being said. For instance, every time Chris says something along the lines of zombies, Jack responds with, "I don't believe in Zombies"...EVERY. SINGLE. TIME...His character is so displeasing and repulsive I wont read another book in this series and I have read them all.
I keep reading these because they’re easy and fun, but I swear... If Jack becomes any more of a controlling creep... I want to like him, but he’s such an ass.
This is a paranormal cozy mystery series, and I loved this one. For the last 4 books, Charlie has been hiding her abilities from her friends and boyfriend. In this one, the boyfriend finds out. FINALLY. I'm so glad that part is out of the way. There are also tons of hints about the direction of the rest of the series. I'm looking forward to more.
This one is about zombies in New Orleans. Real ones. Charlie works for a private agency that investigates the paranormal, looking for proof. But she's paranormal herself, looking for answers, hiding in plain site. Great characters and dialogue. I love the relationships this author brings to life. I've slammed through more than a dozen of her books in a row (the author is extremely prolific) and I'm looking forward to reading even more.
The Undead Uproar begins when Charlie and Jack are called away on a case, this one is in New Orleans, and zombies are apparently walking around town. Jack doesn't believe, and Charlie knows something odd is going on. She must do what she can to figure out how to tell Jack her secret before their relationship goes too far, but that may be more difficult than she thought.
This one was really good. I enjoyed what happened in the end, and I can't wait for more. The only downside was it seemed others new more about what Charlie really is and no one wanted to share with her, and then I felt what she did in the end was sort of a let down, or maybe I just didn't get it. Other than that, I thought it was really funny, and a great read!
I loved it! Amanda M Lee did it again! I love her books and this one was no exception! So Charlie and Jack are moving her to an upstairs apartment when they get the call the team has a new case to investigate. The team is heading to New Orleans, there have been different cases of people that were dead to be walking the streets! So, once they get to New Orleans Charlie seems to be the center of the attack with the Zombies and the Police seem to think she had something to do about it. How will Charlie and Jack's relationship move forward will Charlie find out more to what she is or the limit of her powers? Check this one out!
This book didn't pick up as quickly as I thought it should but I'm glad half way through it really did. I did not see it coming. The alley scene could've been better described and perhaps had more explanations but overall, it served its purpose and made for a good ending.
Awesome read fast paced and lots of action and fun, romance abounds between Jack and Charlie, we learn about Jack's friends and Charlie is coming clean with Jack and can't forget the zombies
Okay, I'll start with what I didn't like... The story ended!!! lol I so wanted it to keep going and going I mean we were in New Orleans for goodness sake, there where ZOMBIES, Zombies, and Charlie were finding more about herself sort of and it finished waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to soon for my liking.
Jack is excited by Charlie's enthusiasm for life, I find that really sweet and endearing... I have to say I sighed for more Millie and less Laura but hey that's my wish for every book I was really hoping for a Zombie to bite Laura but damn it didn't happen...lol at least she makes sure life is never boring and gives me some laughs.
I am enjoying the slow build-up to finding out more about Charlie, I love that Jack knows about her magical side now and honestly I can't wait for Chris and Hanna to know it will make future investigations a lot more interesting... As for Laura being important to Charli's future, I'm praying at some point Charlie needs a sacrifice and Laura's it bwahahahaha...
And seriously the New Orleans setting was awesome, well described and certainly brought the story to life in many ways.
A very entertaining Cousy mystery/urban fantasy series. A great cast of characters with very entertaining stories. This is one series in a multitude of series written by the same author. In a world that has normal humans in our world alongside a magical world that was alongside of us. Charlie who has realize since she was a child that she has some magical powers but is not sure of who or what she is. Find a job with a supernatural investigation Group in a large foundation that since I’m out to investigate supernatural occurrences. She figures she can hide in plain sight while learning more about the supernatural world and maybe herself. There are seven individuals in this group that goes out and investigate. On occasion the different series cross over into each other and mingle the different characters. Check them all out you will not be disappointed and will always be entertainedg Group in a large foundation that since I’m out to investigate supernatural occurrences. .. all convene to keep the Legacy Team on their toes.
Laura, still on the attack, is determined to win Jack, Jack is determined to keep Charlie wrapped in a blanket of protection, Chris is determined to prove that zombies are real and Hannah is struggling to come to terms with her scientific research and the evidence in front of her, Millie and Bernard are the only two who don't feel under pressure.
As the dead keep rising and appear to be following Charlie the detective on the case is showing an unusual degree of interest in her.
The Voo Doo practicing Madame Brenna, the Voo Doo vixens who send Charlie's mouth out of control, the Hoo Doo Loa Tam, the crossroad demon Harley and Papa Legba it's all proving a whirlwind of activity and it's hard to see the fake from the real in a city full of multiple kinds of magic.
With a couple of Jack's old platoon members close at hand to help the pair and Charlie making friends as only she can the biggest difficulty might be keeping her powers under wraps.
Charlie and Jack are really enjoying getting to know each other better exploring their new relationship when they and the team are sent to New Orleans to investigate the appearance of several Zombies roaming the streets there. Jack as ever is skeptical as to the existence of anything supernatural even after he and Charle run across one of the walking dead while out for a stroll. Charlie meanwhile seems to be targeted by these reanimated corpses as wherever she goes one turns up. She and MIllie visit a few Bocurs trying to find answers, but the people they meet seem more interested in Charlie and her magic. Events are building to a dangerous crescendo in New Orleans and it looks like Charlie's not going to be able to hide her special talents from Jack for too much longer, that's saying that she's strong enough to survive what's coming.
A terrific read, even if you don't like zombies like me
Awesome. What a terrific read. Alright I'm really not into zombies and normally avoid books about them but I have to admit I loved this. A powerful plot of voodoo, hoodoo, brujas, zombies, loas and a girl who seems to be something even more powerful than them. The characters are unfurling like a bud to give us a fuller picture of them, their fears and relationships. They have come to New Orleans due to reports of zombies. Her relationship with Jack is still new and although she wants to tell him about her magic she scared he will dump her. A voodoo queen, a detective trying to isolate Charlie, zombies rising from the dead, a crossroads demon, Papa Legba and a new turn in their relationship. Will they find out who is raising the dead? Why do they want Charlie? What will Jack do when he finds out the truth?
Charlie Rhodes is such a hoot! I seriously couldn't wait to get my hands on this book after finishing Lee's The Megldon Mix-up... I needed to know what happens next! Lee's books are like a Cozy Mystery and an Urban Fantasy, all rolled into one, and they completely satisfy two of my inner cravings at once! Jennifer Jill Araya gives us another outstanding performance as she navigated us past the pitfalls that Amanda Lee threw in the way of her characters! This time, Charlie and the team find themselves in New Orleans looking into a possible zombie uprising, and they're actually confronted by, yeah... you guessed it, Zombies! Charlie of course uncovers so much more in her efforts to solve the crime... like for instance a Crossroads Demon, and Papa Legba... but ah, ah, ah... I can't give it all away, you'll need to grab the book to find out what happens next!
The series is a pretty light/easy read. Paranormal aspects were stronger in this one than in the previous books. Charlie shows much more of her powers in this one also. Her dilemma - which has been pending for the last 4 books - is how and when to tell Jack about her abilities. The relationship definitely grows stronger in this book. Cons for me are the continually repeated comments throughout the book. I think in a matter of pages characters referred to Charlie and/or the relationship with Jack as "cute" more than a dozen times. Charlie would think or talk about something and within a page or two it would be discussed again - verbatim. Many aspects of Charlie's background are extremely reflective of other AM Lee books. Editing errors and other aspects noted can make the storyline frustrating to read.
Amanda M Lee is a new all time favorite author. She has a way of drawing you into a book and getting your feeling involved. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. I love Charlie Rhodes and all of the other characters. I can't wait to read more of this series and how she gets other characters from other series into the mix. Can't wait to see where Charlie goes next.I have never laughed and cried reading a book as I have reading hers books. The only other Authors that have manged to do that are Nora Roberts, JD Robb, Catherine Coulter, and Richard H. Stephens. Would love to find more that can do that.
This is another work featuring The Legacy Foundation. In this instance they are going to New Orleans to investigate possible zombie sightings. It turns out zombies had been seen while a detective believes they are just a hoax.
The group visits cemeteries and they find an empty tomb. The female demon that works with her says she doesn't think zombies are real so you have totally different views about the zombies.
At least until zombies actually start showing up. But, are they real zombies or something else? There's also a really neat ending to the events.
Really interesting. I loved the story and the New Orleans theme had me a little home sick but was great. The side bits on Charlie and Jack were fun and liked the possibility of more about her last coming to light. Papa Legba reminded me a little of Zoe's "Bob" (I think Bob is what she called him since she couldn't get his name right).
I'm really looking forward to reading the next book. I recommend this and all her other books under this name and under Lily Harper Hart.
I enjoy all of the series and books by this author. However, this series is quickly becoming my favorite! I really enjoyed this book in particular for the character development, the books have a stand alone mystery, but the main characters remain throughout the series. The plot was interesting with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep us guessing and more information to keep the reader looking forward to the next book in the series. Another hit! Highly recommend if you like cozy mystery with paranormal topics/characters and a lot of snark!
Wow, wow, wow!!!!! what an amazing book. This has got to be the best yet so far in the series. The ending of the book was fabulous and can't wait for the next book in the series. The gang get called to New Orleans where there are incidents of dead people wandering about. There is so much happening in this book that it keeps your interest right til the end. I didn't want the book to end and just wanted to read more. It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here now that someone else has discovered Charlie's secret. Fabulous read!!!
Once again the legacy foundation are out in the world looking for things that supposedly don’t exist. Chasing zombies out in New Orleans can the dead really be raised? Does magic exist? I love the relationships developing within the team, I even like Laura (in a book rather than real life) the different characters in the team fitting together despite their differences. My only problem with the book as always is that it ended and I will have to wait months for the next instalment!
There are some excellent parts to this book but a few truly disturbing aspects are: 1) How controlling Jack is re his relationship with Charlie 2) How much of a bully Laura is towards Charlie and her sexual harassment towards Jack .... I mean who would allow that toxicity in a workplace to continue?? 3) Jack always shoving his beliefs down everyone's throats. Why the hell is he working there.....seriously. I really enjoy this author's work generally but these dynamics/relationships are abusive.
Amanda M Lee is one of my favorite authors. Her Charlie Rhodes series is becoming my favorite. Her characters in this series are very well fleshed out. I love Charlie and Jacks relationship. While there is a little snark, it’s not overpowering.
I’m glad the secret is out! Looking forward to reading more of their adventures together and with the other Legacy Foundation members. Added bonus...this book is set in NOLA. Where else can one find so much magic?
I really do, but one thing I don't frustrating across Amanda M Lee's books is how the heroine is always so insecure and how she always thinks her boyfriend is going to leave her. I like the books a lot but would definitely like them better if I didn't have to roll my eyes all the time at how often she thinks Jack is going to leave her even after he tells her multiple times he's there to stay.
Probably the best instalment in Charlie's series so far. I absolutely love the team dynamics and I think this s something that Amanda M Lee does exceptionally well, that cast ensemble, warm fuzzy feeling. Charlie learnt a lot about herself and the story was definitely on the darker side. Proving herself capable and competent, Charlie got a little fed up with Jack's over protectiveness but their relationship end delightful and fun.
I choose this rating because I love this series. Monster hunters who can't love it! This book is about zombies in New Orleans. I am very glad others seen them. I'm also glad Jack knows Charles secret. I can"t wait until the next book. I wasn't joking when I said I love this series it has monsters it has good characters you like reading about. Well except Laura one obsessed member of the team.
Amanda M. Lee is an amazing writer with a wicket sense of humour and awesome imagination! Every series I've read from her is magical! It's that book that you have a ridiculous hard time to put down when u start it! The undead uproar was not a disappointment ! If you are into quirky , magical , intriguing stories, definitely read her books! You won't be disappointed!
Amanda M Lee is an amazing writer. I love all her books even though they seem to have the same formula of characters each set is totally unique. I started reading about Charlie in order to calm my fix between books but I've fallen in love with her as much as I have the Winchester witches. My teenage daughters love these books as well. I just can't seem to put these bogs down. They are very easy to picture.
This book kinda blows the whole story line wide open. It's actually kind off impressive that it took until book five to do it. Oh, sure, there were some hints in book four, but everyone was being too cagey to come right out and say it. Apparently, the denizens of New Orleans don't really do subtle. So, Charlie will have some extra incentive in future investigations and Jack will have a steep learning curve. It should be fun.
I enjoyed this book the most I’m the series so far. It progressed. Charlie’s unknown magical heritage storyline dramatically and in a satisfying way. I thought the setting was perfect, the mystery du jour was engaging, and the ending satisfying. I am still annoyed by Laura’s character... but feel more reassured there will be some resolution to her petulant plot line after some sage words by (new character) Tam. Definitely recommend!
