The retired senior vice president of the International Mission Board was known for his passion for missions, discipleship and making the Gospel known to "oral learners."

Willis was born on Feb. 21, 1934, in Lepanto, Ark. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee and master of divinity and doctor of theology degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Willis served as pastor of Center Point Baptist Church in Wilburton, Okla., from 1954-56; Sunset Heights Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1957-60; and Inglewood Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, from 1960-64.

Following his years as a pastor, he and his wife were appointed as missionaries by the Foreign Mission Board, serving with their children in Indonesia from 1964-78.

Willis devoted the first six years of his mission service to evangelism and church planting. He spent the next eight years with the Indonesia Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a professor at the seminary for two years and its president for six years, during which time he wrote the MasterLife series of discipleship handbooks that eventually were translated into more than 50 languages and used in more than 100 countries.

After missionary service in Indonesia, Willis served for 15 years with the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) in the adult discipleship department.

This was written by a long time missionary to Indonesia. This book was first written in an Indonesian language and used to teach a discipleship program in an Indonesian Seminary. It was later translated to be used in discipleship training in the English speaking world. Just one nugent in this book "... you must allow Christ to guide your thoughts. You make Christ the master of your mind by removing all obstacles to your knowledge of God and by making every though obedient to Christ."

This is a life-changing book that examines what it means to be a disciple of Christ. It's challenging but also encouraging.

This book was an awesome and challenging study. I enjoyed studying with my FCBC sisters in the God's Fine China women's ministry. Special thanks to our group facilitators! Our God is awesome. Now we must get about His business of witnessing, making disciples, equipping disciple makers and colaboring with other ministries. Come on my sisters, roll up your sleeves, we've got a lot of work to do!

If you want yourself or your ministry team to grow, this book is the best!

Avery T. Willis cuts right to the heart of the matter. Where is your relationship with Christ? How are you applying God's truths? How are you sharing Christ with others? Are you making disciples.

This is a summary of the MasterLife material. Having taken MasterLife many years ago I purchased this book as a refresher. It does give a summary of the MasterLife material. However, it lacks the passion, in presenting the material, as the original work deserves.
