Rate this book
This book will help the reader whether they are a concerned parent, a friend, an employer, a counsellor, sports coach or a doctor. It will enable the reader to understand more about suicide, and most importantly to know how you can help someone who is suicidal. Being a True Hero, is full of possibilities for recovery and the sheer number of options for help will astound many readers.

Being a True Hero is the result of over 10 years research. The author effortlessly merges scientific research with real world examples. This book takes complex scientific information and presents it in a way so that anyone can understand it. More importantly he shows that no matter how bad the situation is there is always hope and always options for things to get better. The author shows that there are also many options available for people who have been told “there is nothing we can do for you.”

There is no one cause of suicide, Michael carefully takes the reader through the many possible causes, from depression, anxiety, brain injuries, psychosis, lack of sleep, loneliness, failure and many more. Reviewers have said this book is equally helpful for the parent and a GP.

Suicide and mental illness are uncomfortable topics, yet, Michael gently guides the reader through these difficult subjects, in a remarkable way that leaves the reader feeling empowered and hopeful.

"Michael writes about mental illness and suicide with compassion and hope. His book is useful for people who have personal experience, the people who love them, and professionals who work in the field. It is serious, at times funny, and references up to date research."
Kay O’Connor PhD, counsellor

"I recently asked a friend I was concerned about if he was suicidal, it turned out he was - and needed help. Without the information in this book I never would have had the confidence to do that. The material in this book could save many lives." Thomas Saywell, Youth Worker

Wow, this was an intense, and yet eye-opening read.
Having never really experienced any kind of mental health issues in my life, the last three years have seen it touch my family on three separate occasions, with devastating results.
Reading Michael's book not only opened my eyes to a problem that is endemic in New Zealand, but how to recognise and respond to signs.
A well written book that is without doubt intended for anyone and everyone to read.
For parents, teachers, leaders, business managers, actually no... anyone... this is a must read.
It doesn't take a hero to reach out and help, but it does to save a life.

An informative read I think many would benefit from. Being a True Hero offers helpful advice and insights into the why’s of suicide, and more importantly, how we can help prevent it.
I found it most useful in describing some of the varied forms of mental illness and how you might notice signs of these in people you know. There is good advice in here on how to approach the topic, what help you can offer etc
There’s an extensive reference section for anyone wanting to read further on these topics also, which I think will be a valuable tool.
