Malta is a country with a vast history. Its location in the Mediterranean Sea has positioned it to benefit powers such as Phoenicia, Rome, France, and Britain over the centuries. It was a vital player in World War II and experienced a period of reconstruction following that war. Today, it is a country with its own personality and picturesque views. This book explores the nation of Malta, touching on its past as well as its place in contemporary world politics, while providing readers the opportunity to understand the country's celebrations, beliefs, lifestyle, government, and more.
I am in love with this series of picture books published by Marshall Cavendish. The photos are gorgeous and the text is extremely readable and straightforward. It strives to be neutral and ends up sounding sometimes kinda Amnesty International, which is pretty fine with me. Various volumes, like 170 of them, cover all the nations of the world, including a few autonomous regions -- Dagestan, for instance. Oh, my word. I am a nerd to rival all nerds. FTW. FTW!! In this world of Flickr it's too easy to forget the pleasures of sitting down with a picture book and pretending to travel without ever having to leave West Oakland -- no plane crashes, no diseases, no Hotel Can't Afford Ya. Love it.
This volume, on Malta, is heaven. Great stuff about history, politics, food including a few recipes, and most importantly AWESOME photos.
As I've written previously, I'm finding it hard to find books specifically on Malta. This was published in 2000, and has some great information. I came away knowing more about the politics and language than I'd known previously.
