I'm Elvira... The Mistress of the Dark, and I'm not afraid of any busted-ass old monster in this joint.

Hail Satan! 😈

I really loved the horror references in this volume. I definitely need to check out Dante's Inferno after reading this!

Reviewing the whole series, since I read all 12 issues in 2 sittings and it's all one big story anyway.

After being mysteriously thrown through time, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, finds herself on a whistlestop tour first of history's greatest horror writers, then the depths of Hell, before finally fleeing from a coven of witches intent on stealing her power for themselves.

It'd be really easy for this to just be cheesecake with no substance, but writer David Avallone injects levity and fun into the proceedings as well as some actual stakes that even Elvira can care about. There's winks and nods to everything, the fourth wall is in pieces, and everything's all just fun. There were a few little bits that surprised me (nicely), and even the artwork, all twelve issues pencilled by Dave Acosta, never veers into the obvious cheesecake. Elvira's sexy, and we all know it, and that's all there is to it. Even most of the variant covers collected in each volume are tasteful and in proportion (I say most).

The Mistress of the Dark's return to comics is well worth a look - maybe even two, if she'll let you.

One would think the idea of Elvira: The Mistress of Dark in hell would make for a fun time and fascinating read. Unlike the previous volume of the series, Avallone presents a story that feels tonally all over the place. In some parts, the titular character still maintains her signature sass. While in other parts it feels like it analyzes the meaning of life and the afterlife. That mixed tone spoils the fun that Avallone originally created in the first four issues of the series. It has some good ideas but not the best execution of said ideas.

I read the issues of this trade paperback as individual issues just for clarity.

Volume 1 of Elvira was her traveling through time meeting various horror legends. This collection follows her journey as she wound up unjustly in hell. She has her usual wit and charm as she travels through the various depths of hell, I just wasn't personally as in to the setting at characters as I was the previous volume. Still it's all in good fun and I look forward to reading the final issues of this run of Elvira.

I continue to enjoy following the profusion of Paradise Lost fanfic in the world of comics and pop culture in general in the last couple of decades. In this case, we're dealing with a straightforward winking retelling of Dante's Inferno with a cast of B-movie cameos and our titular (har har) gothic queen. I'd categorize this volume as slightly less inventive as the previous, but it's still a decent amount of lighthearted fun and cleanly resolves the plot elements from the first volume. The series as a whole remains a cut above what I was expecting.

This book captures the humor and personality of Elvira perfectly. There are plenty of pop culture, music, and literature references without becoming annoying or feeling forced into the story. Elvira even pokes fun of the comic industry and writer of the book. Highly recommend for Elvira fans.

The art looks good especially how Elvira is illustrated. The coloring however, is blah; it could use more tones and variations.

While it captures everything that is Elvira and offers a neat little thing near the end, I just wish it wasn’t yet another take on Dante...

Elvira’s crazy adventures get even wilder in Elvira Mistress of the Dark: Volume 2 – Elvira’s Inferno, a modern take on Dante’s Infero. When Elvira gets pulled into Hell when Mephistopheles comes for Faust, she has to journey through all the circles of Hell to get to Satan to appeal for her release. Once again writer Dave Acosta does a great job at capturing the Elvira character and her bawdy, meta humor. However, the concept of Hell is a little cliché and underwhelming. Still, artist David Avallone gives it a visual flare and uses some creative panel designs. It’s not as good as the previous comic, but Elvira Mistress of the Dark: Volume 2 – Elvira’s Inferno is entertaining and a bit of fun.

Everybody’s favorite bouffanted busty back-talking brunette in her black dress is back in Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Volume 2: “Elvira’s Inferno”. Writer David Avallone continues Elvira’s hellish adventures in this fun graphic novel series that pits Elvira’s wits and party pillows against the Lords of the underworld.

Everything went tit’s up in the last volume when Elvira (and her shoulder boulders) got sucked into a wormhole and found herself stuck in different time periods thanks to Dr. Faust. Now she (and her lady bubbles) finds herself in Hades with Mephistopheles and a parade of famous dead people, including Edgar Allen Poe.

She and her snuggle pups need to find a way out of Hell, immediately. In the process, she learns a little bit about Purgatory and Redemption. (Not ironically, that’s what I’ve affectionately dubbed her right and left breasts, respectively.)

Okay, boob jokes aside, this is actually an entertaining series. It is, much like Elvira herself, smarter than it looks. Avallone has a lot of fun dropping literary references and hilarious cameos. (The late drag queen Divine appears as a guardian angel.) There is, of course, the constant breaking of the fourth wall and pop-cultural Easter eggs that nerds will love.

By the way, here is a very funny list of euphemisms for boobs: https://www.buzzfeed.com/norawhelan/9...
