A rich dude buys an Italian villa. It has a great view. Owners buy the house and disappear. There is a locked door in the cellar...

I would put this more in the Poe school than the Lovecraft.

Creepy short story, like a politely written 'torture porn' scenario. Used to be a 'Weird Tale' which I noticed thanks to scrolling through Lovecraft back issues. Always wondered what the story was, found it on Gutenberg press. Very pulp, which is no bad thing...and very gruesome!

Did anyone else's sympathy lay with the clotted mass of red and white that lay on the stone floor? Fabulous little tale.

This was kinda gross. I initially rated it 2 stars, because the writing was fine, but the content has left a bad taste in my mouth, and I don’t want to read it again.

A delightful story. It has the kind or realism I enjoy. When you read it be sure to nosh some well buttered toast with raspberry jam.
