The reputation of this author goes before him.
His latter job as an ex police officer with child protection services I feel add weight to his very credible novels. He writes fiction. Non of these are based on fact, but they could be as the reality and passion that John Nicholl pulls on to enhance his such addictive stories keep me hangin on his every word.

His books may not be based on topics that you may read, indeed, some may shun. Nevertheless the topics he chooses to write about are reality. They are happening around us and we can’t live in a bubble.

This story is about a bully, yes a bully, a wife beater and an ugly human being on the inside, a liar and deceiver.
A police officer. A Detective! He’s respected in his line of work and people like him.
Michael Conner.

In his private life he’s a pig in the most ugliest of ways to Kathy, his wife.
He manipulates her, he’s cut her off from family and friends. She has no freedom of movement not even when he’s at work.
Everything has to revolve around him and to his satisfaction. Yet, even when he’s satisfied he’s not.....
He’s always looking for a reason to excuse his behaviour.
Has she reported it? Yes!
But HE is the police.

Can she get help?
Can she flee? But at what cost?

Yes this will make you shudder, this will be emotive, and yes you may cringe, yet imagine if this were you?

This author tackles topics that are hard to hear, hard to listen to.
But important insights to reality.

If you’ve been in a domestic abusive relationship this may bring triggers.

It’s a story that needed to be told.
And no matter what, this author has shot high in the book charts, he has books translated into several languages, his sales are fabulous and he makes his novels available in paperback and audio. Audio is fantastic.

I’m waiting for him to write a book I DONT like. It’s a tough call!

I liked this one but I didn’t love it.
This was a originally a short story called Bully Boy and it worked well. It was compact and neat.

Expanding this story into a larger more volumed book didn’t work for me. Yes it had added on explanations, more depth but I hated the ending.
Major flop.

And I’m a HUGE fan of this authors work and always will be. I do hope his publishers take note.

Domestic noir.
Crime
Plots
Twist

Oh did I mention the twist? No?
Read it and find out.

Master of the the psychological thriller, John Nicholl builds on a previously limited release novella (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...) that offers much bone-chilling excitement as the story progresses. Kathy Conner lives the most horrible life possible. An abusive husband who bullies her unremittingly with no one who will believe her, either the family she has regularly called or the police who turn up at the door. Married to Police Inspector Michael Conners, Kathy is sure that she will never rid herself of this monster, especially when he offers such a calm demeanour to the outside world. At her breaking point, Kathy begins concocting a plan as her only way out, though it will take all the patience she can muster. Never knowing if each night Michael comes home will be her last on earth, one day Kathy takes a chance in order to free herself of his shackles and punish him for all that he has done to her. While her plan seems foolproof from the outset, it will take all Kathy has to ensure its success. A great story that reminds the reader of how addictive Nicholl can be, especially when he tosses in a wonderful twist at the end. Perfect for Nicholl fans and those who enjoy a quick-paced psychological thriller.

I remember when I first discovered Nicholl on a whim and could not put the book down. Promising I would keep an eye out for any of his future publications, Nicholl kept me on his own personal radar. Each book built on strengths from the last and this piece fits perfectly into the flow and ongoing positive development of his writing style. The story builds on a few central characters and the emotional differences between them, namely Kathy and Michael. From there, it is the slowly evolving thought processes that Kathy exhibits that keeps the reader wanting to know how it will all come to a climax, even when a pitfall almost ruins her plan. The reader goes through all the ups and downs faced by an abused woman with the desire to flee, even when she finds herself under the thumb of the abuser. A mix of short and long chapters keeps the reader hooked and demanding more. With Nicholl's past professional experience in this area, it is no surprise that he is able to write so seamlessly and presents the reader will a stellar story whose impact resonate powerfully.

Kudos, Mr. Nicholl for such a wonderful piece of work. I am truly blessed to be able to read and share your work with others and hope you have many more stories to come.

5☆ Devoured it in one night!
A Chilling Psychological Thriller!

I am a huge fan of John's writing, he is one of my favourite Authors and as soon as i see The Girl In Red I couldn't wait to delve in, and yet again he didn't disappoint.
I devoured this book in 1day! I couldn't put it down!

If like me you are a fan of Nicholls books then you will be aware that the subjects in his books are not for the feint hearted.
What I love most about his books is that no matter how uncomfortable the subject, he has this way of drawing you in and captivating your attention, almost as if for a split second holding your breath for fear of what will happen next.

This time round we meet Kathy.
Kathy is married to Michael.
Michael is a vile, manipulative, scum bag, abusive, wife beater, he actually made my skin crawl I wanted to punch him in the face. ( honestly he provoked Anger inside me, which I rarely feel in books)
You see everyone around Michael thinks the moon shines out of his bum, because he has the perfect cover up.... he is an Inspector in the Police Force, well known, respected and trusted.

So who was ever going to believe Kathy.
Not even her Mum. He convinced everyone she had mental health.

Can Kathy ever escape?
He owns her!
She is his!
The only way she can escape is in a coffin!

Like I said before this book isn't for the feint hearted. It has graphic scenes of abuse, some reference to sexual abuse and violence.
I understand this isn't for everyone but what Nicholl does is make a big impact, it relates to the story and makes you fully invest in the characters.

I can't go into too much more detail as i don't want to risk giving away the thrilling twists to the story, and wow was there twists! So very very clever!

My only gripe was the ending. I didn't like it. But it wasn't enough to drop a star for.
The ending did bring the story to a close, but I so wanted more.
There are questions I am desperate for answers to. I'm only hoping that there possibly might be a continuation 🤞

Once again John Nicholl has written an Unputdownable psychological thriller, that really got under my skin, kept me on my toes the whole way through, cleverly weaved in twists I didn't see coming, had extremely well written and believable characters, it was gritty, fast paced, compulsive, thrilling, suspenseful and perfectly dark in all the right places.

Would I recommend reading The Girl in Red?..... without a doubt!
John Nicholl is definitely one of my favourite Authors, I've adored each and every one of his books to date.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

THE GIRL IN RED is the new dark psychological suspense thriller novel based on the novella, Bully Boy Blue by best-selling author John Nicholl, and ex-police officer and child protection social worker. It will be published by Bloodhound Books on Mar 16, 2019.

Bully Boy Blue, a fast-paced novella deals with an abusive marriage; the wife, Kathy controlled by her violent “Bully Boy” husband, Michael Conner.

But what makes this even worse is that Bully Boy is a COP…a well-respected detective…an Inspector in his field.

Kathy is like silly putty in his hands…she has no control in her life. He controls all her movements, she has been separated from all her friends and family, everything is timed and must meet his level of satisfaction. “Bully Boy” tells everyone that his wife had suffered a mental breakdown after her miscarriage and is now suffering from postnatal depression…and is now taking it out on him! What a bastard!

Connor is cruel and manipulative and these traits increase over time! Kathy is physically and mentally abused!

When Kathy tries to escape, Connor does his best to convince everyone that she is mentally ill. But Anna, Kathy’s identical twin sister, doesn’t believe it.

When Kathy learns that she is pregnant again, she realises that she must take back control in her life, for the sake of her unborn child. Her brutal husband had beat her before until she miscarried her first pregnancy. It wasn’t going to happen again…She has a plan. Kathy gets help its Anna’s help to rid herself of Connor for good.

But will Connor simply let Kathy walk away…

I raced to the end to see what was going to happen, and re-read the last few pages. This is definitely an ending that the reader will love or hate. For me I found it a little to neat and tidy and not totally credible. I now have further questions.

John Nicholl’s extensive experience provides credibility to this piece of fiction. He has an important message to share with the reader, whether they want to hear it or not. Abuse is Abuse and never should be tolerated…in any form! I applaud the author for addressing the issue of Domestic Violence, and keeping it on the forefront.

I wish to thank the author, John Nicholl, for providing me with a digital copy of this book.

I enjoy the this authors writing so jumped at reading this £1.99 purchase of his extended short story, approximately 200 pages. I received an exciting story that pulled me along wanting to find out more, but also a surprise I didn't expect.
Kathy is not happy she is married to Police Inspector Michael Conner who is a bully and spends his life manipulating and controlling her. He tells everyone that she is mentally ill and restricts her movement from their house. She is not even allowed to contact her twin sister Anna without Mike's rage flying out of control.
When Kathy learns that she is pregnant, she decides that she must finally escape his clutches and take back her life. She had miscarried previously due to Mike's beatings and is determined that this won't happen again. She has a plan but needs the assistance of her sister Anna to get Mike out of her life once and for all.
Well written and the kind of story that has you frantically turning the pages to read more. All through the book you are rooting for Kathy, willing for her to succeed. My only hesitation is the ending, not quite sure it is what I wanted.
Overall exciting read by a consistently good writer.

Kathy is a brutalized woman. Her husband is a tyrant, a bully, and he loves to use his fists. Kathy is not only physically abused, but mentally as well. She can never do anything to suit him.. be it cooking, cleaning, and answering his demanding questions. He tells people at work that she is mentally ill ... still suffering from a miscarriage some time before. He does not tell them that it was his fists and his boots that caused the miscarriage.

Why not go to the police you might be asking. He 'is' the police. She tried once to report him and she paid dearly for that 'mistake'. She won't do it again.

Following an assault by her husband, she finds herself pregnant. She swears that she will not lose another child to her husband's rages.

Begging her twin sister for help, she comes up with the perfect way to get out and get even.

You know what they say ..... the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

WARNING: Due to the graphic descriptions of physical and mental domestic abuse, this may be a trigger for some readers.

It doesn't seem right to say I "enjoyed" this book, considering the subject matter. It's quite explicit and I couldn't help but cringe when reading certain parts. I was certainly rooting for her to get out and run. And get out and run she did .... but what kind of life is it when you're constantly looking over your shoulder?

I can't say I liked all the characters, but I'm sure they were written that way. The people who don't or won't believe her ... her own family ... and especially her husband's fellow cops.

I did not especially care for the ending ... it seemed a bit rushed, a bit unfinished. The ending was definite, but It did not feel credible .... I wanted some answers to my questions.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological drama. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I read The Girl In Red in paperback version. John Nicholl is one crime author I can't live without reading his books. There's always that feeling of fear when I seem to grind my teeth wondering what's going to happen next in John Nicholl's books. I read the short version of this paperback that was only 55 pages, now I've read the whole version of this story. It's a frightening read Kathy Conner is married to a bully, Police Inspector Michael Conner, he is a control freak who kicks his wife. There's only so much Kathy can take, when she plans an escape from him. This sad story brings us to what is happening in the real world, there are husbands in real life that beat their wives, and they may stay with their abusive husband in fear of their husband may find them. I'm a huge fan of domestic thrillers. I'm longing for the next book by John Nicholl.

I was so excited to hear that this author is releasing another book. Each book I read by him is faultless. The Girl in Red is no different.

This author likes to push the limits. In this story he writes about a bully...he can certainly write a fantastic story.
The bully is a well respected Inspector in the force, Michael Conner. He's a bully at home to his wife Kathy. Physical and mental abuse is a daily occurrence for her. When she finds out she's pregnant she knows she needs to escape so she asks her twin sister to help her.

Can she really escape from this nightmare?

Another great story by this author. I applaud him on writing about domestic violence. It's a subject that needs to be written about. Seriously can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

Oh dear, swimming against the tide again. I did actually read the novella Bully Boy Blue (not realising it was a novella) which the author expanded on for the novel. I thought the novella was much tauter and overall better. I didn't review it as I don't normally read the damn things. I really enjoyed Nicholl's first book White is the Coldest Colour but his other releases have not impressed me as much. I think that's because he tends to belabour things and there's too much repetition. This book fell away in the last third or so, basically part 2. For a synopsis - there's plenty of other reviews out there but I think most of you get the gist.

Steel your nerves for this dark tale of survival at all costs from John Nicholl, who never shies away from sensitive topics, raw justice or the twisted ways that Karma can be served up in a completely believable way.

THE GIRL IN RED is a tale about abuse, deceit, bullying and the desperation of one battered woman who will go to any length to escape and survive. It is the ugliness of one human delighting in being inhumane to someone who should be his most treasured friend and lover. Expect to feel the tension ratchet with each page turned. Feel your gut twist, your frustration and sheer anger boil over and to understand how the events of this story fell into place.

John Nicholl writes in bold strokes and it can be uncomfortable, but it is also thought-provoking and a shocking reality check that abuse happens and it takes something monumental to give the abused a reason to say, “I have had enough, I deserve better.” Will it be too late for Kathy? Has her own mind been warped so badly by Michael that she will never truly be free of him, no matter what?

Adult fiction at its best, no holds barred, no sugar-coating, well-written and very unsettling, THE GIRL IN RED is magnetic in its presentation and chilling in its conclusion! You may even find yourself thinking you would do the same thing...

As a psychotherapist I am always bound to read John Nicholl’s novels through that lens, as well as being drawn immediately into the narrative. The Girl in Red is no exception. His portrayal of a woman worn down by coercive control and escalating sadism is chillingly accurate. People who have never experienced this particular brand of bullying directly, or second-hand in the position of therapist or social worker, might ask the question: “But why didn’t she leave?” Often in real life that question is asked too late on, when violence towards a partner has crossed a line too far. In this novel the author reveals to us a woman whose spirit is cowed but not entirely destroyed, though her mental health veers understandably towards the erratic instability that goes along with desperation. How can she extricate herself from what the reader will increasingly react to with disgust and horror, spurred on to discover the answer? The storyline is cleverly contrived to keep you enthralled, and had me again and again thinking: “Oh no!” as it unfolded, wondering, guessing, and dreading where it would ultimately lead. I read the final third of the book at a gallop, eager to reach the denouement. The ending was not entirely satisfactory for me, nor as compellingly convincing as much of the rest. Because of this I shaved off one star from what would otherwise have been a 5* novel, although that’s a personal take, and I nevertheless thoroughly recommend it, especially if you like your novels to have psychological veracity as well as being intriguing, gripping, and chillingly memorable.

Michael Conner is a well-respected Police Inspector. When his wife Kathy complains of domestic violence, nobody believes her as Conner has made sure her credibility is non-existent. Only her twin sister believes her. conner is quite an evil character. I was pulled into this story by the end of the first chapter. This is a dark and twisted read. The escape plan that Kathy and Anna make stretches your beliefs just a little bit. I never knew what direction the plotline would take next. This is a gripping, thought provoking, and well written book.

John Nicholl does a fantastic job describing domestic violence, the motives, the emotions, etc. Having worked with domestic abuse victims and perpetrators for twenty years, I can tell you that the author gives a very realistic portrayal. If you suffer from PTSD or have problems when reading about abuse issues, you may want to steer clear of this one. BUT, if you enjoy a fast-paced, page-turner with a lot of suspense and a twist or two, you'll more than likely enjoy this one. I did.

This started in hair-raising conflict. Be warned--it could he triggering for domestic abuse victims. It certainly was for me. Nicholls had created a vile, evil character in Officer Conner that will turn your stomach and boil your blood. It's an emotional read that rocked me. So real, so disturbingly authentic. You won't be forgetting this suspenseful read anytime soon.

This was rather different from other books I have read by this author. The story centres around Kathy Connor who has been receiving increasingly violent abusive treatment from her husband, police Inspector Mike Connor, ever since her wedding day. His bullying and cruelty has become more and more sadistic until Kathy knows she has no option but to get out permanently or die at his hand. Mike has seen to it that no one, not even her own mother, believes her except her twin sister Anna by spreading stories of her mental illness and unbalanced nature whilst making himself out to be a martyr to his wife and marriage. Enlisting Anna's help she formulates a plan that will either save her life for good or leave her forever looking over her shoulder. Mike is a despicable character, wonderfully described so that I really loathed him and desperately wanted him to get his comeuppance. Kathy came across as so near to breaking point which gave her the strength to fight back eventually. The book is a real page turner - just when you think you know what will happen, events turn on their head again, and I raced through it in a bid to find out what happened in the end. It is definitely an ending that the reader will love or hate, either finding it most satisfying or a little bit too incredible. But then it is fiction after all, and either way I think most readers will enjoy the ride. 4.5/5.0 rounded up.

This is an emotional and chilling read. I knew from the very first page that my life would be on hold for a good few hours while I devoured it's contents. Manipulation, abuse, power, lies.... mixed together with love and courage. All the ingredients for an engrossing read. A well respected man of the community, a Police Inspector who's once loving, caring wife now has very serious mental issues, but his love and support for her is honourable and commendable. But what really does go on behind closed doors? Has his wife the courage and the means to escape? Only one person believes her, the uncondition love of her twin sister... but is she crazy after all? A real page turner right to the very end. A great book and highly recommended.

This was a four star read for me up until the end, which was so far-fetched and fortuitous that even I couldn't ignore it. The story is a horrific tale. The abuse heaped on this woman was unspeakable. Her husband was worse than a monster. She was failed by so many people along the way. She was so beaten down by her husband and her situation that there really was only one way out. All in all, it was a really good story. Clever and twisty. But so many things had to line up at the end, and I started seeing them a mile away. All I was left with in the end was a pained expression on my face and one of those stupid cartoon bubbles with the word "SERIOUSLY????" written in it floating over my head.

What another excellent book by John Nicholl. Not an easy read as it contains significant domestic violence and the perpetrator is in a senior policing position. I experienced physical domestic violence in a relationship in my teens and as I was gripped, reading I was shouting in my head what I would do. I finished the book in 2 sittings, would have been one but stupidly started late at night to read a couple of chapters. I should have known better having read all of John's books which I couldn't put down.
I absolutely didn't see the ending coming either. Another smashing John Nicholl book.

Another brilliant psychological thriller which had me all fired up. Police Inspector Michael Conner is a vile manipulative bully who controls his wife Kathy in the most horrific way. However, he shows a different side to his colleagues and Kathy's family, playing the caring husband. When Kathy comes up with a plan to leave him she enlists the help of her sister who knows full well what a pig he is. The plot is unique, well written and the ending is amazing.

From the off, we meet a very engrossing main character, Kathy. Kathy is being abused - physically and emotionally, by her husband who just happens to be a police inspector! Along the way, we get glimpses of a very strong, but wounded woman who is determined to live.

I don’t believe in spoilers, but I will say that the book full of twists and, although very dark in places, is an extremely clever piece of writing - the ending blew me away!

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

Oh wow! I thought "The Student" was an uncomfortable read but it has nothing on THE COP! True to form, Nicholl wastes no time in plunging the reader straight into a confronting first chapter which only got worse as the story unfolded. The subject matter is dark and is certainly uncomfortable to read with plenty of trigger warnings for those who have suffered domestic violence. Nicholl's villain is a vile hateful character that makes your blood boil with every word that spews out of his mouth. He has an innate knack of creating the types of characters that really get under my skin more than anyone else ever has...which speaks to his skillful writing and unique style.

Kathy Conner thought she had married that man of her dreams but instead what she got was her worst nightmare. Her husband Michael Conner, a police inspector no less, is a bully who has broken his wife down little by little over the half a dozen years in which they've been married. He controls her every movement, she has no friends, he has separated her from her family and everything she does must meet his high expectations and standards...but then, they never do anyway...even when they do. He belittles her, abuses her, beats her, dehumanises her and laughs at her every misfortune by his hand. She is trapped with no way out for Conner has ensured that no one will believe her should she call for help. After all, he's the respected police detective and she is just a silly woman with mental problems.

Conner uses cruel and manipulative measures to control Kathy so that she will never leave...to be at his mercy forever. He owns her. And when she tries to escape, he convinces everyone that she is mentally ill, crying tears that have his colleagues and neighbours eating out of his hand. Even her own mother believes the lies he has constructed! The only person Kathy can turn to is her twin sister Anna.

Then Kathy discovers she is pregnant again and rather than risk Conner beating the life out of her unborn child, she instead devises a plan to take back control of her life. Enlisting Anna's help but without confiding in her, lest Conner discovers her plans, Kathy must rid herself of Conner once and for all.

But will her plan work? Or will she pay with her life?

OMG! This was one tense read from start to finish. I was so uncomfortable reading it I had to put it down - yes, just as I did "The Student" but this one was way more uncomfortable! But for different reasons. The brutality is confronting and Nicholl holds nothing back. I was literally squirming whilst turning the pages. Part of me wanted to just race to the end to find out how it ended to save myself the discomfort but I knew I would be doing myself a disservice because Nicholl is such an accomplished writer I would miss out on so much. I so wanted to see Conner get his comeuppance! My only complaint is I didn't get to the full impact of it. Still, this was Kathy's story.

And then there is that ending. WOW! Where did that come from? I did not expect any of that! Maybe a little far fetched but hell, it was pure genius. Such a masterful stroke to turn the tables as he did. And here I was wondering how it was all going to end? I'm still shaking my head in disbelief...just wow!

Throughout the abuse scenes between Kathy and Conner, I couldn't help but draw parallels to that of "the doctor", David Galbraith from that trilogy. Galbraith treated his own wife with the same contempt and cruelty, I felt as if I was re-reading Galbraith's scenes again. The similarities were chilling. And both men were incredibly hateful.

I have to say Nicholl has done it again. He is a pure master at psychological thrillers which torture me each time I read them...and yet I go back for more. Why? Because he is such a brilliant writer. His storylines are compelling, his characters are hateful and pitiful in equal measure, he has the innate ability to draw you in completely and then spit you out at the end with a shocking twist! And best of all, his thrillers are fast paced thrill rides with relatively short snappy chapters which just keep that pace moving. Everything I love in a thriller.

If you have not read John Nicholl yet, I have to ask why not? I urge you to go out and do so! He is one hell of an author that I only discovered some six months ago and he is now up there as one of my all-time favourite go-to authors.

I would like to thank #JohnNicholl, #NetGalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #TheCop in exchange for an honest review.

I confess to being a fan of John Nicholl’s since I read my first DCI Gravel thriller, and I regretted the end of the series. Oh, ye of little faith, Sarah!

The Girl In Red opens with Kathy in a terrifying situation. She’s pregnant, her husband is violent, and he’s kicked her and deliberately caused a miscarriage in the past. So? There are refuges for women in this situation – help, advice, and protection. Dial 999 girl!

Kathy’s husband is Police Inspector Michael Conner, so who is the young constable going to believe? Vague suspicions based on a new-recruit course about domestic violence aren’t enough with his career at stake. The only one who does believe Kathy is her twin, Anna, but will she collude with Kathy’s desperate escape plan?

As always with John Nicholl, the reader is privy to the thoughts of several characters, the good, the bad, and the deluded, and it makes for a tense, electrifying, story. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, or are a fan of superbly-written whodunits, don’t hesitate to buy a copy.

this kept me thoroughly entertained all the way through the ending was predictable and the characters dialogue seemed unrealistic and forced which was its biggest weakness i felt so bad for kathy and her situation felt so real because this kind of stuff happens in real life its so sad i hate mike so much ugh i would recommend this if you are looking for a quick easy suspenseful read i would not call it a pscyhological thriller it was not complex enough for that like i was hoping but it was a decent suspense read im glad this was recommended to me

Thought Provoking.

This book is about an abuser, I am reluctant to use the word man. He hides behind his position of power and uses it well, as do others in this world. During the telling of the story you may want to look away, but that’s what people do and this is why women remain in such situations. I urge you to read about Kathy and be enlightened. By opening our eyes and being aware, we might just prevent this happening, even to one of our friends and family. Congratulations to the author for weaving such an emotive and thought provoking tale.
