Dear Reader,

Thanks for taking the time to check out my web site! I love the fact that the Internet makes it so easy to "talk" to readers (and to hear from them, too - my email address is below).

My favorite thing to do is read - and my second favorite is to write. Since 2003, I've been writing The Reigning Cats & Dogs Mystery Series, which features veterinarian Jessica Popper. The books also include the antics of Jessie's menagerie: her rambunctious Westie, Max; his shy sidekick, Lou the Dalmatian; aging pussycat Catherine the Great; newcomer Tinkerbell, a tiger kitten with the personality of a diva; mouthy Prometheus, a Blue and Gold Macaw with attitude; and last but not least, the silent yet seemingly wise chameleon Leilani. The newest book in the series is CROSSING THE LION.

I also launched a second mystery series, The Murder Packs a Suitcase Mystery Series, which will run concurrently with Reigning Cats & Dogs. The first book, also titled MURDER PACKS A SUITCASE, introduces Mallory Marlowe. Recently widowed at the age of 45, Mallory is still struggling to find her old self when she falls into a new job as a travel writer. In addition to researching exciting destinations, she happens upon the occasional murder - and she can't help getting involved in finding out whodunnit. The first book is set in Orlando, where she goes to discover whether or not the "old Florida," with alligator farms and pink plastic flamingoes and seashell jewelry, still exists despite the proliferation of glitzy theme parks. The second book in the series, TOO RICH AND TOO DEAD, is set in glamorous Aspen, where Mallory is trying to find out if even a non-skier can have a fun vacation.

Working on two different mystery series has been an interesting challenge. I've tried to make the two series different - but at the same time to include the same elements in the new series that readers of the original series seemed to enjoy. That means a likeable heroine, a compelling mystery with some quirky suspects and a few surprises, a touch of romance, and lots of humor. I'm really looking forward to seeing how readers respond to my new character and her adventures!

I always enjoy hearing from readers, so please don't hesitate to write and say hello. In the meantime, I hope you continue to enjoy my books!

Best wishes, Cynthia Baxter

Hot Fudge Murder by Cynthia Baxter is the second book of the cozy A Lickety Splits Mystery series. Each book of the series centers around it’s own mystery to be solved so it is possible to read out of order although some character development would be missing.

In this series Kate McKay had left her hometown after high school and gone onto college and then a career in Manhattan but when she got news that her grandmother needsed someone to come care for her Kate quickly returned to Wolfert’s Roost giving up her career. Once back in her hometown Kate decided she would follow her dream of opening her own ice cream shop to begin a new career path.

Now just weeks after opening her shop Kate finds that her tempting treats are so popular she is getting offers of catering some huge events. However, after arriving at the party hosted by fashion designer Omar DeVane it isn’t long before screams are heard and another murder occurs. When the fact a killer is one the loose starts to kill off business too Kate vows to solve the case herself.

Reading this first book in A Lickety Splits Mystery series I found myself loving the small town cozy vibe and Kate became somewhat endearing to me learning of her love for her grandmother so I really enjoyed the first book. However, getting into this second book it seemed it lost a bit of that magic I found in the first. I found myself not so much of a fan of creating a love triangle for Kate and I think the mystery was a little less compelling than the arch rival in the first book although I did still enjoy all the wonderful ice cream shop talk and the characters overall.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kate McKay is thrilled that after only being in business a short time people are booking her to cater ice cream desserts for their parties. She can’t believe she has been asked to serve sundaes at Omar DeVane’s gala. The prominent fashion designer will have many celebrities at his event and she hopes they will love the sweet treats she will be serving. She has been told Mr. DeVane loves hot fudge sundae’s, she hopes his guests will too.

When she arrives at the mansion with her best friend, Willow, her niece Emma, and Emma’s boyfriend Ethan, they are awed by the place but set up their Lickety Split Ice Cream Shoppe station and get ready to serve the guests. Things get really sticky when the housekeeper screams and Omar Devane’s body is found. Murdered by one of his guests? That has to be the answer, but who?

Sadly, the public draws the line between the murder and Kate’s shop. The press has camped out in front of her shop and isn’t there for the ice cream. Could this murder thaw her right out of business? Leaving her shop in Emma’s care she embarks down the path to find the killer herself, making Wolfert’s Roost’s Detective Stoltz very unhappy.

Cindy Baxter delivers another delicious mystery for her readers to enjoy.

Our protagonist Kate McKay is one busy woman. Running her shop, developing new and unique flavors, and tracking down a murderer. Her old high-school boyfriend Jake seems to be quite jealous when Hudson Valley Adventure Tours opens across the street from Lickety Splits and its owner seems to be interested in Kate. A good old fashioned romantic triangle in the making. Kate’s grandmother is getting a little restless at home and has started visiting the Senior Center and having some grand ideas. I really enjoy the way Kate and her Grams evolved from the first story and throughout this one. It is a natural progression and not forced.

The murderer has to be someone at the party which could mean a lot of suspects but the focus quickly narrows down to just a few. There were some wonderful twists but I made my decision of whodunit early on, I just needed the motivation to fall better into place. I did enjoy all the work Kate put in to investigate and had fun following along.

As in the first book in this series, Ms. Baxter’s descriptive writing style drew me in. Not only the people and the places but the ice cream. Being allergic to nuts I was sad to see all the recipes with almonds but love the direction she is going with Lickety Lite. If you don’t have ice cream in the freezer when you start reading this book, put the book down and go get some. You will be wanting a scoop or two before you get through the first couple of chapters.

I really enjoyed this story. I am excited about the next story with both Kate and Grams having some bright ideas.

This is the 2nd in the series. I read the first one and the third one. Kate her niece Emma her best friend Willow and Emma boyfriend Ethan all work in Lickity Spiit Ice cream shope. Kate was the manager. Willow had her own job but she helped (Kate the owner of ) out sometimes encouraging Kate that her concoction were all yummy and every one Absolutely loved all her flavors. Kate so far handcrafted to kindergarten kids which were Ice cream clowns of strawberry vanilla and chocolate topped with cone hats gumdrop faces and hair with colored sprinkles, a 40th birthday party a local art gallery for women's social who made Ice cream concoction with 3 flavors of Ice cream 🍦3 kinds of syrup, a mound of shipped cream and a whole lot of mixing like m& m, nuts, chocolate sprinkles fruits, bacon ,marshmallow, peanut butter chips, pretzels, popcorn and potatoes chips and she hosted Chamber of Commerce Metting. But this was the first time she ever catered to a well known celebrity and all his rich friends for 75 people. The man Omar clothing designer , a model named Gretchen and the Pippa an editor for Flair a fashion magazine right up with Vogue, Elle. A man that was his confidante Frederick and Mitch his manager. Kate was very nervous but her employees encouraged her. All was having fun with her Ice creams concoction. But somewhere in the house Omar was found dead with a scarf wrapped around his throat. Everyone of These people had hidden secrets. These books I Love because there are unique flavors that Cynthia describes. Like Peanut butter on Playground, Honey Lavendar, Pear and Blue Cheese, Hot Cakes with butter maple icecream, Chip Coach Potatoe icecream . And they are evens facts and histories about icecream . Like 2017 longest Ice cream sundae, and about the fact about Ben and Jerry Cherry Garcia Ice cream made up for Jerry Garcia the singer for Grateful Dead. And how photo shoots has mashed potatoes for Ice cream on sets. It is a fun and interesting and some Laugh Out Loud moments. Love these

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Kate is a strong kind woman and she loves her ice cream shop. There is nothing that she would not do to make it successful. So when someone dies at a party that Lickety Splits is catering, she takes it personally and vows to find the culprit. I really enjoy spending time with Kate’s core group of family and friends. I have to say that a love triangle is not my favorite thing and I hope Kate makes a decision soon. Who will she pick?

The setting is homey and the ice cream shop seems like someplace I would like to visit often. Some of the ice cream flavors sounded yummy, others not so much. I have to say that reading about all of the flavors that Kate makes and is thinking of making got a little tedious and a little tiresome, and I love ice cream. That is only my opinion and other readers may not agree with me.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy ready. The author is very talented in creating suspense and I thought that the mystery was well plotted and well paced. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery and I am looking forward to reading the next book when it is released.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Lickety Splits ice cream shop owner Kate McKay is looking forward to a busy summer of creating new ice cream flavors and delectable creations. She's even picked up a catering job at the estate of wealthy fashion designer Omar DeVane. Apparently, the celebrity designer's favorite food is hot fudge sundaes! While his entourage members are somewhat rude, Kate is struck by Omar's kindness which is why she's horrified when his housekeeper comes running to the party to announce Omar has been strangled to death! OMG! When tourists fail to flock to Woolfert's Roost, Kate worries about her shop staying in business. When other local business owners report a drop off in business, Kate feels it's up to her to solve the murder quickly so they can all get back to business.

Well, this story started off nicely. I really loved the ice cream making but Kate thinks about ice cream ALL the time. She eats it for breakfast (some days skipping meals all together and surely that will balance out the calories?) and dreams up new flavors whenever anyone else mentions food. If you're not THAT into ice cream, don't bother. I liked Kate's relationship with her niece Emma and how that subplot is developing. I also liked the progression of Kate's friendship with her ex-flame Jake. I even enjoyed the party at Omar's and celebrity watching. What I did not like was the investigation. There's ZERO reason for Kate to investigate. She hasn't heard from the police so she assumes she's not a person of interest and she also assumes they haven't solved the murder yet. She thinks she can help the investigation along because.... she "helped" solve a murder once before? Her investigation unravels at rapid pace as she becomes more and more reckless. It becomes very cartoonish and Kate ends up being TSTL. This story is only marginally better than Hannah Swenson. Only because the dialogue is less inane and there aren't any Baking for Dummies recipes at the end of each chapter. The recipes are included in the back.

Kate is TSTL. I do like her kind heart and she means well but, there's just not much in her head besides herself and ice cream. She loves her grandmother enough to pause and ask where her grandmother is going all dressed up but she barely notices when a hot guy flirts with her. Kate is very compassionate towards Emma and allows Emma to make her own decisions. I think Emma is pretty mature for 18 and she thinks of others before herself, unusual for that age. Emma's boyfriend Ethan seems about as intelligent as a flea but he reads a lot and thinks a lot about heavy things. I think he needs to go to college. He'll enjoy it and discoursing with other thinkers. That's the only thing I miss about graduate school. Grams is awesome and I truly admire her plan but I'm pretty sure many of those things are already covered. I know schools have teacher's aides to work with children who need extra help but Grams and friends could always apply for a job at a school. Kate's bff Willow is very nice. She's a yoga instructor but apparently not opposed to ice cream once in awhile. She's even willing to help Kate out in the shop. I'm sorry for her that apparently Kate is more attractive?!

At first Omar DeVane, famous fashion designer, seems very kind and thoughtful. After all, he loves ice cream! What celebrity even eats carbs and sugar these days? Upon further investigation, I see things about him I don't really like but that's more his handlers than him. He truly didn't deserve to die. My heart was broken for those who truly cared about him. Who actually did care for him and who wanted him dead? My money is on his assistant Frederico. It's always the assistant. Kate notices Frederico's "exotic" accent right away and he claims to be from Milano. An Italian accent shouldn't seen exotic even in the Hudson Valley. She lived in the City and surely worked with or met Italians. Methinks I detect a phony accent. Frederico is rude and snobby to Kate and seems controlling with Omar. I really want it to be him, but that's a little obvious. There's Gretchen Gruen, a supermodel Omar rescued from factory work in Berlin. She's cold and standoffish at first, worrying about trivial things but she opens up to Kate. Whether she's telling the truth or not, Kate isn't sure. She certainly has a reason to want Omar out of the way but he made her a star and would she risk everything by killing him? Pippa Soames, editor of Flair magazine is not your average magazine editor. She alone seems to have truly cared about Omar but I'm not sure she cared about him as a person or as a celebrity. She doesn't really have a motive for murder but I think she could have done it for a reason Kate has to discover. There's also Mitchell Shriver, Omar's oldest and closest friend, seen arguing with Frederico. Does Mitchell have Omar's best interests at heart? Mitchell is a tough New Yorker but would he kill his own friend who also happens to be his client? That seems counterproductive. He's a smarmy businessman for sure, but murderer? A longshot is Marissa, Omar's housekeeper. Why would she kill her employer? She was the one to discover the body though and that makes her a suspect in my book. She's a little too friendly and chatty with Kate to be believable. I'm sure she's being paid well to keep quiet about a lot of things. Kate dismisses Marissa as a suspect because Marissa seems genuinely fond of Omar and devastated at his death.

Another new character, unrelated to the murder, is Brody Lundgren, who owns the shop across from Kate's. He's a rugged, outdoorsy, health, alpha male type and if there's any "type" I hate more than sleazy, it's him. Plus he IS a little sleazy trying to mark his territory with Kate. Jake is also guilty of acting like a dog with a bone but he at least has prior claim and knows Kate's personality and thoughts. Brody has had one conversation with Kate and spent it flirting. I don't like men who come on strong or act like morons around women they find attractive. The women aren't much better. Because Brody is attractive, they're all batting their eyelashes, even Emma who is devoted to Ethan.

I already cancelled my hold on the next book in this series. I'll pick it up again as an e-book when I'm desperate and have forgotten how bad the first two were. I did enjoy this second one more than the first but only a little bit.

Detective Stoltz must be the stupidest detective ever if Kate solved this murder before him. Surely he would have had a search warrant to go through the house and find the evidence? He doesn't suspect Kate this time anyway even if she's in the wrong place at the wrong time. Officer Bonano is doing his job, that's why he is cold and impersonal with Kate. She's too dumb to realize that. I think he seems like a nice guy.

I am one of those usual persons who doesn't really like ice cream. I enjoyed the history of ice cream found at the beginning of each chapter. I felt that too much emphasis on the various ice creams several them sound terrible.
Kate is catering to a glamorous party hosted by a well-known designer. During the party, the host is found is found murder. The news media arrived in town but the fall leaders are not coming to the area. Kate decided to investigate. Will she find an answer before she joins the designer? I recommend this book, the second book in the series.

Review:

Second in the new Lickety Splits Mystery series, this novel reminds me of all the reasons I like ice cream. This unique shoppe of handmade, hand-designed ice cream is a fabulous setting for a cozy mystery. I enjoyed meeting the characters, who are well-rounded and defined. While I had a good idea who the bad guy might have been, it was still a very challenging tale of murder, danger, and surprises.

Kate’s ice cream store, Lickety Splits, has only been open a few weeks when she is hired to cater a party at the weekend home of Omar DeVane, an internationally-famous fashion designer whose favorite food is hot fudge sundaes. When she asked his personal assistant, Federico, what they are celebrating, he said Omar’s life. And a fabulous one it has been for the gentle, down-to-earth man that Kate, her best friend Willow, niece Emma, and Emma’s current boyfriend, Ethan meet the night of the soiree. Federico and Omar’s business manager, Mitchell, leaves a bit to be desired, but his housekeeper Marissa is friendly and helpful as can be. That’s why, when they heard a scream, and Marissa came running into the party crying that Omar had been murdered, it was such a shock. At least to everyone except who killed him.

This is the second time a murder has occurred where Kate is, and Detective Stoltz is less than happy to see her again. He interviewed her first, then when realizing she was there on business only, let her leave. Unfortunately, with the death of such a well-known man in their community, summer tourism came to a screeching halt. Not only is her shop effected, but the entire business district. If business doesn’t pick up soon, the shops will lose their primary income for the year. It’s time for Kate to get involved with solving the murder, whether she likes it or not.

Kate and her high school sweetheart, Jake, have a tentative friendship growing after his disappearance on the night of their senior prom. It seems he wants to revisit their former relationship, but she’s not sure if she is ready to do so. When Brody, who looks like a modern-day Viking, opens Hudson Valley Adventure Tours across the street from Lickety Splits, he shows an interest in her. Suddenly she has both men dropping by the house, and both are like dogs circling a bone. Hopefully Kate will choose one or the other quickly and reduce the tension in Grams’ home!

The characters are well-defined and most are very likable. Kate, while a great businesswoman and former PR executive, doesn’t always think things through. When the town was crawling with cable and newspaper reporters, she begins to answer questions about the murdered man without finding out who she was speaking to. She takes risks on her sleuthing trips, especially when nosing around the home of the late fashion designer. Overall, though, due in part to her love of ice cream, I do like Kate, as well as Willow, and Kate’s beloved Grams. Grams might be my favorite person as I see her make amazing changes throughout.

Watching Kate and her friends search for the killer was exciting. The plot twists revealed few possible suspects. I was surprised to see the ease with which she was welcomed by Omar’s supermodel and the editor in chief of a leading fashion magazine; both seemed to be genuinely nice women who shared information providing great clues. When Kate’s life is threatened, she finds one of the most telling clues, leading her to put herself in even greater danger. I was somewhat surprised at who the real bad guy(s) turned out to be, so well was deception played. I highly recommend this deliciously-designed mystery!

Hot Fudge Murder by Cynthia Baxter has readers visiting Wolfert’s Roost, New York. Kate McKay owns Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe, and she has been hired to cater an event at fashion designer, Omar Devane’s estate, Greenway. Two of the guests include fashion model, Gretchen Gruen and Pippa Somers, editor of Flair. The evening is rousing success until they hear the housekeeper screaming and stating that Omar is dead. Detective Stoltz quickly arrives on the scene to take charge and question the attendees while Kate’s handmade ice cream melts. The next day, journalists descend upon the town and send the tourists fleeing. If Kate is to save her fledgling business, she needs to solve Omar’s murder. In between creating new ice cream flavors and a delicious, light sorbet, Kate talks with various people from Omar’s life to learn the true story about his rise to fame. Can Kate solve the crime, or will the killer put her on ice?

Hot Fudge Murder is a breezy and humorous cozy mystery. It is the second book in A Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe Mystery series, but it can be read alone. Everything a reader needs to know is included in Hot Fudge Murder. Kate McKay opened Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe six weeks earlier and the shop has been doing well so far (fingers crossed). Catering a high end event for Omar Devane (loves ice cream) will introduce Kate’s shop to a higher end clientele and, hopefully, provide her with more catering opportunities. She did not anticipate the host being murdered during the event nor the vast number of journalists who would overtake the town. Kate is worried if the murder does not get solved quickly, her ice cream shop will go under from the lack of customers. Cynthia Baxter is a descriptive writer which provides readers with details they need to visualize the story. Kate questions various suspects and looks around Omar’s home in the hopes of identifying the killer. There are a limited number of suspects which makes it simple to solve this whodunit. I did find that Hot Fudge Murder slowed down in the middle with the pace picking up towards the end along with the action. Romance is in the air as Kate has two men interested in dating her. I sincerely hope the author will quickly nip the love triangle in the bud. Kate’s niece, Emma is having romance troubles of her own and we get to hear about every single detail. I would have preferred less romance and a more complex mystery. I did like the change in Grams and her idea involving the seniors from the local senior center. Hot Fudge Murder is filled with delectable and some unusual ice cream descriptions. Kate is always coming up with new flavor combinations which has caused her pants to become uncomfortably tight. I like the historical tidbits on ice cream at the beginning of each chapter. There are recipes for ice cream, sorbet and hot fudge sauce at the end. Hot Fudge Murder is a lighthearted cozy mystery that will leave readers craving a frozen sweet treat.

HOT FUDGE MURDER, the second book in the Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe Mystery series by Cynthia Baxter is a sweet mystery with lots of yummy, cold treats to whet the reader’s appetite! I greatly enjoyed the way the author starts each chapter with a historical blurb on ice cream. Not only was it entertaining but it was educational. I was also intrigued “watching” how the protagonist, Kate McKay, puzzles over flavor combinations to create new ice cream flavors for her shop, Lickety Splits. So many unique flavors and most of them sound divine! While the ice cream and charming shop provide a relaxing, inviting setting, it’s not long before murder intrudes, disrupting a party Kate has been hired to cater. Worried what it might mean for both her fledgling business and her town’s tourist trade, she knows she must step in and find the killer before financial ruin becomes a reality. Kate isn’t a sophisticated investigator, but her determination to ask questions despite her reluctance is sweet. While I figured out the killer early on, there was a twist to the story that I didn’t expect. This provided great satisfaction to a light-hearted read.

I enjoyed Ms. Baxter’s descriptive voice which helped me visualize the settings and the characters so I felt like I was right there experiencing what Kate was experiencing. I also loved Kate’s relationship with her ‘Grams’ and her niece, Emma. They have an adorable closeness that is heart-warming. She also has a great sidekick in her best friend, Willow. Opposites, they complement each other and provide opportunities for good dialog. The author also sets up potential romances for Kate in future books. Personally I hope she steers clear of the over-done love triangle and allows Kate a realistic relationship. However, one of her potential suitors is from her past and I thought it was a clever way to learn some of Kate’s backstory. While I haven’t had a chance to read the first book in the series, HOT FUDGE MURDER is easily read as a standalone. Ms. Baxter provides just enough information to help the reader connect with the characters without detracting from the main plotline. I look forward to seeing what happens next to Kate and seeing what delectable ice cream flavors she comes up with in future releases!

I was provided an advance copy via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My first job was at a Baskin Robbins, so Kate's new ice cream shoppe, Lickety Splits, reminds me of those days with one exception - Kate dreams up and makes all the ice cream combinations with fun names. Her biggest catering job so far opens the story. Providing a hot fudge sundae bar at one of Omar DeVane's homes is quite the honor, as he is one of the most well-known fashion designers in the world. He is also gentle, kind, and personable, a middle-aged man sharing a good time with business associates and friends. It made no sense, then, when a couple hours into the party, his sweet housekeeper Marissa ran, weekping, into the party to tell everyone that Omar had been murdered, strangled with one of the ties he designed.

Kate has helped solve one murder already since opening Lickety Splits - what is it about ice cream and murder? When the tourist season comes to a screeching halt for her and the Hudson Valley town, it is time to start finding out who could have killed the designer.

I like Kate's creativity and her ability to start over when leaving a lucrative Manhattan PR career to return to Grams' home to help take care of her after she falls and - thankfully - doesn't break anything. Grams had raised Kate and her sister after their mother died, and she dearly loves her. There are times she seems quite impulsive for an accomplished businesswoman, but her risks usually pay off without harm. She tends to find some of her best information through these risks. I hope she makes a decision quickly on which of the two men interested in her she will pursue and put an end to the almost nightly drama when they both make unannounced visits.

This mystery has challenges and a couple red herrings, but I had narrowed it down to one of two possible people. There were still surprises in store, and overall I enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next one. I also look forward to seeing what Grams' creativity will bring about - which is all I'll say about that! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys intriguing cozy mysteries, ice cream, and close family and friends.

Hot Fudge Murder is the second book in Cynthia Baxter’s A Lickety Splits Mystery series and is a fun and easy read. The characters are well developed and likable. This is a clean read, with an interesting mystery and sprinkled with humor and a touch of romance.

Katherine “Kate” McKay recently returned to her childhood home in Wolfert’s Roost, New York, a quaint Hudson Valley village, to help her grandmother who suffers from arthritis in her knees and had taken a fall. Kate loves any and everything related to ice cream and opened the only ice cream parlor in town, Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe. Her best friend and yoga instructor, Willow Baines, helps in the ice cream parlor, along with her niece, Emma, and Emma’s boyfriend, Ethan. Jake Pratt, a high school flame who’s running his family’s organic dairy, and Brody Lundgren, who just opened Hudson Valley Adventure Tours, are both vying for Kate’s affection. Lickety Splits was hired to cater an event honoring the life of Omar DeVane, a famous fashion designer, whose favorite food is ice cream, specifically fudge sundaes at his estate for upward of seventy-five guests. Things are winding down, and Kate is pleased that things ran smoothly and the ice cream treats were a big hit when heard a scream rings out. Marissa, Omar’s maid, comes running into the room, with the terrible news that Omar had been murdered, apparently strangled with his necktie. Detective Stoltz and Officer Pete Bonano of the Wolfert’s Roost Police Department are on the case, but all the merchants are experiencing a lack of customers since the murder and Kate decides to follow in the footsteps of her childhood idol, Nancy Drew, and investigate on her own.

This is the second book in the Lickety Splits Mystery series by Cynthia Baxter.

Wow! How fun was this book? Murder with a side of ice cream and hot fudge!

Kate McKay used to work in the big city at a corporate job and now is in a small town making up her own ice cream flavors and serving them to the public. Then a famous fashion designer gets killed at his local residence and nearly all the business downtown has come to a stand still. While she is waiting for customers to come in, Kate decides to solve this murder and make all the business come back into town. She was there that day Omar’s body was found. She knows, sort of, the key players in the mystery and has her mind set on being a sleuth. But maybe this sleuthing thing is not as easy as she thinks it is. Finding the killer proves to be a challenge, if not, physically dangerous.

In between her new sleuthing duties, an old high school love interest has put his hat in the ring for her affection. Their past is not the best and she doesn’t know if she can trust Jake or not. Then there is the new business owner, Brody across the street who opened a sort of “choose your own adventure” type of shop. What fun the future books will be with these two vying for Kate’s affection.

I really enjoyed this book. The text flowed naturally and I was sucked in from the very beginning. I look forward to whatever new mysteries come upon the people of Wolfert’s Roost!

If you love cozy mysteries, definitely give this one a shot. It will be yummy to your tummy and appease those cozy mystery inklings we all seem to crave.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

This is the 2nd book in the series and I really enjoy this series so far plus I love ice cream.
Kate's new ice cream shoppe is open and ready with new flavors but where are the customers and tourist to Wolfest's Roost. Kate and her team catered an ice cream social for fashion designer Omar DeVane. Everything is going great and his guest love the ice cream. When things are beginning to finish up Omar's body is found and it is obvious that he was murder. The police take it as a normal murder and do a no rush job, but Kate sees what it is doing to her business and all the businesses in Wolfest's Roost. Until the murderer is found no one will make any money because the tourist are afraid to come, so Kate decides to do some detecting herself. Can she figure out who killed the loved fashion designer before someone kills her? Great mystery and well written. The author keeps the story and characters moving and changing to keep your interest. Enjoyable book.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this cozy featuring an ice cream inventor!

Kate is invited to scoop at a fashion designers party which would be great but the poor man ends up murdered! (Sadly, not by a hot fudge sundae.)

Kate decides that she needs to solve the case.

It's a fun mystery with interesting characters and potential motives.

I had not read the first book in this series and though I still enjoyed it I think I would have slipped into the story much better had I had a little more background information. I loved the small town vibe that the author was able to invoke and felt connected to the characters. I didn't love the relationship developments though and they were distracting from the main plot. Overall I enjoyed this series and intend to go back and read the first book!

I enjoyed getting to know a little bit about brother and the apartment that he still lives. I love all unusual flavors of ice cream that Lickety Splits make.

Eh, I just could.not get into the book, the plot or the characters. The book just didn't peak my interest. I think there is probably an audience for this book, I am not it. I do typically love cozy mysteries. I just am not a fan of this one.

Hot Fudge Murder by Cynthia Baxter is the 2nd book in A Lickety Splits Mystery series, and another fun addition. Kate McKay has left her high powered job in New York to return home to care for her grandmother and open up her dream shop selling ice cream. Kate and her Lickey Splits staff has been hired by a world-famous designer, Omar DeVane, to serve ice cream for the rich and famous. When Omar is found dead at his party, Kate must find out the truth. I really love this book, and can't wait to continue Kate's adventures in the next book. Not only is this book fun, it has a great mystery also. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. If you love fun cozy mysteries, I recommend this book.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The description is quite detailed and can drag the story down. I felt bored all the way through, the characters are flat and dull, the main character is created for wish fuffilment and I just couldn't relate to her. There's a mistake on page 225, the word that is repeated twice.

The first chapter of Cynthia Baxter’s Hot Fudge Murder efficiently brings readers up to speed on the characters while beginning the action of the new plot. Kate McKay, owner of Lickety Splits, is hired by fashion designer Omar DeVane to cater an affair at his vacation home, throwing her into the world of the rich and famous. His favorite treat is hot fudge sundaes which Kate is glad to provide.

There is a murder at the event, and the important tourist trade in Wolfert’s Roost plummets, threatening the business interests of Kate and other locals. Kate begins an informal investigation in an effort to save her town financially.

Hot Fudge Murder has two potential love interests for Kate; they are in and out of the plot as Kate interviews suspects. Another character is Emma, Kate’s niece who lives with Kate and works for her in the ice cream shop. Also on the Cream Team are Willow, a yoga instructor and Katie’s best friend, and Ethan, Emma’s current crush.

The fashion world setting is interesting with some humorous elements such as when a fashion model appears clueless as to where she should look in a kitchen to find ice. In her world it was always provided in a bucket. Character-suspects include Omar’s personal assistant, his financial manager, an elegant magazine editor, and his favorite model.

Kate does most of her investigating through interviews—with a little deception thrown in. Consistently, as she is talking to other people, Kate’s mind is tossing around ideas for innovative ice cream flavors. A few sound like winners, but many sound disgusting (e.g. Pear with Blue Cheese). I think they are included to be outrageous and showcase Kate’s creativity Occasionally, however, that aspect of the story seems overdone.

Hot Fudge Murder is fun. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Kensington Books for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

As a child I enjoyed our local ice cream parlor, it was a treat to go there with my family and struggle to pick out a wondrous creation from the menu. I'm still a lover of ice cream. Oh, the flavors - sigh. If I lived near Lickety Split Ice Cream Shoppe, I would be there so often I would have me own seat. This series is a classic cozy set in a small town with a young woman who has left her job to return home due to family matters and decides to start a new chapter of her life. When I need an escape, this is what I need. While this is the second entry in the series, it hasn't suffered from the slump some books hit.
Kate has started her ice cream shoppe and has become so popular that she is hired to serve her ice cream at a very swank party. That's great for her business. That is, until murder joins the party and the resulting bad press threatens to melt her business into nothing. Kate dives into her investigating knowing that her future is on the line. Along the way she has to juggle her love life and her family life. A love triangle wasn't in her plans.
The setting and the characters along with a well crafted and satisfying mystery made for a nice escape. My only problem? I kept wanting to raid my freezer for more ice cream, none of it, alas, as good as the ice cream sold at the Lickety Split Ice Cream Shoppe.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is the 2nd book in the "A Lickety Splits Mystery Series" by cozy author Cynthia Baxter.
Thank you for the ARC to the publisher and to Net Galley . My review opinion is my own.
I loved the first in series with the charming ice cream shop, her beloved Grandmother and the picturesque small town. This reader enjoys the description of running a small ice cream shop and the wonderful treats created by the owner.

In the next in this fun series its six weeks after the grand opening of Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe. Owner Kate McKay has been invited to a local mansion owned by a wealthy fashion designer to create her sweet treats for his event. When he is found dead during the party the murder proves to have many interesting possibilities of suspects. However when business is off at her shop due to the murder and talk in town, Kate knows she must take action to find the right suspect and get her business back to normal. She has to enter the world of high fashion and along the way meets many unique charcters. Suspects abound and soon Kate is on the right track but may be placing herself in danger.

This is a enjoyable cozy that I enjoy to conclusion. The sleuth was well crafted and interesting to conclusion. I like Kate as a main charcter and look forward to the next in series.
