Yanan Gün kitabı, çok sevdiğim Jack London'un çok sevemediğim bir eseri oldu. Kitap genel hatlarıyla iki bölümden oluşuyor. Birinci bölümde kahramanız Kanada'nın Yukon bölgesinde zor şartlarda altın araması ve onunla birlikte gelişen olaylar üzerine kurulmuş. Kendisi de gerçekten Altına Hücum yıllarında bulunmuş. Bu kısımdaki atmosfer Beyaz Diş ve Vahşetin Çağrısı gibi macera yönü yüksek kitaplara benziyordu. İkinci bölüm ise neredeyse birinci bölümden bağımsız ve aşk teması ağırlıklıydı. Bir de burada kırsaldan uzaklaşıp şehre yerleşmesi var. Yer yer doğa tasvirlerini sevsem de diğer eserlerine kıyasladığımda bazı bölümleri okurken sıkıldığımı dile getirebilirim. Ama bu kişisel yorumumdan çok vasat bulduğum da anlaşılmasın Jack London'un kalemini gerçekten seviyorum. Şu an yazarın 6 kitabını okudum ve okumaya devam edeceğim.

There are just too many things wrong with this book. The characters are so ridiculous and unbelievable. The main character, who goes by the cringe inducing nickname that gives the book its title, is an overwrought, hyper-masculine caricature of the early 20th century American male. The way that women are portrayed in the story is borderline offensive (there is a female character who is only referred to as, "the virgin"). The dialogue is embarrassing and poorly executed. Basically this is a love story about a man that leaves the wild Alaskan north to make it big in the business world of San Francisco, falls "in love" with one of his employees and spends about 150 pages not taking no for an answer. If this novel had been written in 2012 it would be written off as pop fiction/romance with almost no literary value. I found myself wanting to stick my finger down my throat after almost every chapter. Glad I'm done with it. Good riddance.

This is perhaps not his best-known novel, but it has passed the test of time better than most of the others and it certainly addresses themes that are of long-lasting interest: the ambiance of those celebrated gold-rush days, the workings and moral destructiveness of unbridled capitalism, and finally and even more forcefully the urgent necessity to protect and preserve the natural marvels that mankind is surrounded with.
Quite ambitious rags-to-riches (and back) this story has a long first part describing the adventures of the central personage Elam Harnish known by one and all as Burning Daylight because of his habit of routing his comrades out of their blankets with the complaint that daylight was burning on his way to acquiring a formidable fortune in the Klondike gold rush in northern Canada in the late 1890’s, and then how he continues his economic adventures in the even tougher world of capitalistic competition down south in San Francisco and New York, to finally discover the truly meaningful objective of his life living in the hills of the magnificent Sonoma Valley of Northern California with the lady of his dreams.
Loved Jack London's style of writing. Written in the more relaxed, vernacular style it made you feel like you were there. I had wanted to read this for a long time. I was not disappointed, other than the feeling that I wish I had read this sooner.

"Ruf des Goldes" ist eine interessante Mischung aus Abenteuerroman, Zurück-zur-Natur und Kapitalismuskritik.
Die erste Hälfte des Buches sind 5 Sterne wert. Die Abenteuer in der Wildnis, der Kampf mit der unbarmherzigen Natur die der Protagonist Burning Daylight mehrmals nur knapp überlebt, sind unglaublich gut erzählt.
Der Protagonist selbst ist eine Spielernatur, anfangs sucht er die Grenzerfahrungen in der Wildnis Alaskas und entgeht nur knapp dem Hunger- und Kältetod. Langsam, aber unaufhaltsam gewinnt eine andere Abenteuerlust die Oberhand, nämlich die des Goldrausches am Klondike. Daylight investiert in Grundstücke, geht hohe Risiken ein, verliert Geld und gewinnt dafür umso mehr. Sein Einsatz lohnt sich, indem er seine Investitionen aus einer gewissen Bauernschläue heraus tätigt. Ohne Bildung, sondern lediglich mit dem Spieler- und Pioniergeist der frühen amerikanischen Siedler ausgestattet, schafft er es zum Millionär. Ein Aushängeschild des amerikanischen Traums und der Möglichkeiten die sich im Amerika des 19. Jhd. einfachen Leuten bot. Nun, reich werden kann zwar jeder, aber eben nicht alle. Es muss immer jene geben ,die für den Reichtum anderer arbeiten. So gibt es eine interessante Schlüsselszene in der Daylight beschließt nie wieder etwas mit den eigenen Händen zu schaffen oder zu erarbeiten, sondern von nun an zu planen, zu organisieren, zu verwalten und andere zu bezahlen um die körperliche Arbeit für ihn zu verrichten.
Die zweite Hälfte des Romans ist leider deutlich schwächer.
Daylight ist das Spiel um Landgewinn in der Wildnis und Goldabbau zu langweilig geworden und er beschließt die große Spielwiese der Börse zu betreten. Er zieht in die Großstadt, betritt vollkommen unerfahren das große Spielfeld, wird hereingelegt, nimmt sich seinen Anteil und noch mehr zurück, bis er schließlich zum großen Börsenhai und Unternehmer aufsteigt.
Die Abenteuer in der Natur sind vergessen, er baut Muskeln ab, wird beleibt, alkoholabhängig und hart. Die Finanz- und Großstadtwelt lässt ihn in kurzer Zeit hartherzig und grausam werden, etwas das die raue, feindselige Natur Alaskas nicht erreicht hat.
Jack London schildert eindrucksvoll wie das Loslösen von den eigenen Wurzeln, das Anhäufen immer größerer Summen nur unzufriedener macht. Denn wie Daylight am Ende erkennt kann er sich mit seinen Millionen nicht mehr Freizeit erkaufen, im Gegenteil, je reicher er wird desto mehr arbeitet er und desto weniger kann er das tun was ihm wirklich Spaß und Freude bereitet. Der innere Spieltrieb zwingt ihn jedoch dazu immer weiter zu machen. Bis er auf eine Frau trifft die ihm geschickt den Spiegel vorhält. Ab hier ist aber leider auch die Luft raus, denn die Liebesgeschichte zieht sich sehr in die Länge.
Die Beziehung der beiden ist an sich ganz interessant, da Daylight mit seinem Vermögen vermeintlich als überlegener Teil gilt. Während die Frau, als seine angestellte Sekretärin, gerade genug hat um sich und ihren Bruder zu versorgen und davon abhängig ist, dass er ihr Gehalt zahlt, ist sie jedoch eigentlich die Überlegene. Mit ihrem Ja oder Nein kann sie Daylight ins Glück oder ins Unglück stürzen. Er verhält sich meist wie ein unerfahrener, schüchterner Schuljunge während sie sehr selbstbewusst auftritt und erstaunlich emanzipiert wirkt für einen Frauencharakter aus dem 19./20. Jhd.
Daylight erkennt schließlich, dass er mit seinem Geld nichts mehr erschafft sondern nur noch Geld anhäuft um des Geldes willens. Der Entschluss sich einfach zurückzuziehen und mit seiner Angebeteten in eine Hütte im Wald zu ziehen, wirkt da etwas fehl am Platze. Zumindest wenn man das Buch aus sozialistischer oder kapitalismuskritischer Sicht liest. Da Jack London zeit seines Lebens in einer sozialistischen Partei aktiv war, kann man das Buch nicht ganz ohne diesen Hintergrund lesen. Aus diesem Aspekt heraus, wirkt die Lösung doch etwas mager. Man entzieht sich einfach der Verantwortung und nimmt sich ganz aus der Gesellschaft raus. Zum einen natürlich verständlich wenn man als Börsenmakler und Großunternehmer einfach nur noch seine Ruhe will. Daylight zieht jedoch nicht in eine kleine, verfallene Hütte sondern kauft sich ein riesiges Grundstück mit Wald, inklusive Bauernhof und geräumigem Holzhaus. Das kann er natürlich nur durch seinen Reichtum, seine Aussage dass ihm sein Reichtum also nichts gebracht hat und er ihn nicht zum Leben braucht, wirken vor diesem Hintergrund schal und heuchlerisch. Denn er verschenkt sein Geld nicht oder spendet es, nein er behält es natürlich damit sie sich das ruhige, einsame Leben im Wald leisten können. Zwar kehrt er zurück zur körperlichen Arbeit, aber ein Kampf ums Überleben wird es nicht werden.
Wie man dieses Ende auch deuten mag, mich hat es etwas enttäuscht. Zusammen mit der zähen zweiten Hälfte, würde ich hier nur 2-3 Sterne vergeben. Aufgrund des starken ersten Teils und vielen anderen, interessanten Aspekten, ist das Buch für mich auf jeden Fall sehr lesenswert.

В същото време той постепенно започва да губи себе си, да пие все повече, да става все по-зъл към враговете си и все по-самотен и затворен към всякакви човешки отношения.

Бях забравила напълно за какво става дума в книгата. Да, има неща , които не са ми интересни , но толкова увлекателно пише автора, че не мога да спра да чета. Не случайно , книгите му са вечни.

The first time I started reading this book, the character Burning Daylight turned me off so much that I set the book aside and read something else. I decided to give this a second try, finish the book, and then provide an opinion.
The story is split into two books. The first shorter book describes the live and times of Elam Harnish or Burning Daylight as a young he-man of the great north west. It describes his incredible accomplishments. His strength and endurance are legendary and super human which is a bit much for me but may be appropriate to a younger audience. The story begins by introducing a character in the first paragraph known as "The Virgin". I don't believe her name is ever disclosed but I don't believe any woman would allow herself to be referred to as "The Virgin". The way the characters talk to one another is ridiculous to me. This being said, Daylight's antics are interesting to read. This story line is so similar to Smoke Bellew that it's really hard to remember which stories go with what character.
At any rate, Daylight wins his bundle of cash from the gold rush and cashes out, in order to live the good life in San Francisco, which is when Book II begins. Book II's story line is more believable and has Daylight pitted against the most unscrupulous of business men but of course Daylight being the he-man he is, is able to out smart his business associates at every turn. As the story progresses, Daylight's health deteriorates due to his sedentary lifestyle but he is able to increase his stash from 11 million dollars to 30 million dollars. Daylight comes to the threshold of accruing 100 million dollars in assets but throws it all away to become a rancher in Sonoma Valley. This turn of events is due to obsessive love disorder (OLD) with Dede Mason, his comely office worker.
I suppose this story is supposed to be romantic and poignant regarding the accumulation of wealth but to me it was ridiculous. No one would just throw money away to this degree. Heck he could have just taken the 11 million dollars he got from the Klondike and been comfortable for the rest of his life but he decides to gamble further in the business world. I personally believe that money is not the root of all evil but it's the lack of money which is the root of all evil.
The other thing that struck me as ridiculous was Daylight's inability to have a normal relationship with women. He was so shy and withdrawn that he was unable to talk to women in any way and largely ignores women through the entire story.
In all, I don't recommend this story. I believe it to be one of Jack London's worst efforts but he may have been shooting for a different audience. They actually made several movies of this but no remakes past 1928 thankfully.
The story is split into two books. The first shorter book describes the live and times of Elam Harnish or Burning Daylight as a young he-man of the great north west. It describes his incredible accomplishments. His strength and endurance are legendary and super human which is a bit much for me but may be appropriate to a younger audience. The story begins by introducing a character in the first paragraph known as "The Virgin". I don't believe her name is ever disclosed but I don't believe any woman would allow herself to be referred to as "The Virgin". The way the characters talk to one another is ridiculous to me. This being said, Daylight's antics are interesting to read. This story line is so similar to Smoke Bellew that it's really hard to remember which stories go with what character.
At any rate, Daylight wins his bundle of cash from the gold rush and cashes out, in order to live the good life in San Francisco, which is when Book II begins. Book II's story line is more believable and has Daylight pitted against the most unscrupulous of business men but of course Daylight being the he-man he is, is able to out smart his business associates at every turn. As the story progresses, Daylight's health deteriorates due to his sedentary lifestyle but he is able to increase his stash from 11 million dollars to 30 million dollars. Daylight comes to the threshold of accruing 100 million dollars in assets but throws it all away to become a rancher in Sonoma Valley. This turn of events is due to obsessive love disorder (OLD) with Dede Mason, his comely office worker.
I suppose this story is supposed to be romantic and poignant regarding the accumulation of wealth but to me it was ridiculous. No one would just throw money away to this degree. Heck he could have just taken the 11 million dollars he got from the Klondike and been comfortable for the rest of his life but he decides to gamble further in the business world. I personally believe that money is not the root of all evil but it's the lack of money which is the root of all evil.
The other thing that struck me as ridiculous was Daylight's inability to have a normal relationship with women. He was so shy and withdrawn that he was unable to talk to women in any way and largely ignores women through the entire story.
In all, I don't recommend this story. I believe it to be one of Jack London's worst efforts but he may have been shooting for a different audience. They actually made several movies of this but no remakes past 1928 thankfully.

J'ai beaucoup apprécié le premier tiers qui se déroule en Alaska où on suit le personnage principal qui est un chercheur d'or expérimenté et respecté. On découvre ses conditions de vie et son ambition, ce qui était vraiment intéressant et prenant.
Pendant le deuxième tiers, on suit notre protagoniste vers la ville. Là, il va investir son argent pour tenter de s'enrichir encore plus. C'est assez personnel, mais la façon dont gérer ses affaires et les magouilles financières m'intéressent assez peu, si bien que cette deuxième partie m'a moins emportée.
Enfin, le derniers tiers nous propose une romance qui m'a très peu convaincue, car l'homme insistait beaucoup. Bref, j'ai trouvé que le récit prenait une tournure assez répétitive et prévisible.

The Russian literary scholar and translator Vil M. Bykow says that Elam Harnish, the role model for London’s hero, is said to have actually read Burning Daylight: "In his opinion, the book was like the weather in the north: sometimes great, sometimes terrible." I can only agree to that. The best part is the Alaska plot, and the description of Burning Daylight’s entrepreneurial career in California (somehow an anti-Ayn Rand ante litteram) still makes a good story. However, the hero’s life after his redemption from capitalism (and alcoholism) and return to a pre-capitalist unity of people and nature comes close to a bucolic shepherd poem.

This is essentialy a story about a man's journey to find out what is important in life. Along the way he develops strength and vitality, loses it in his quest for fortune and power, then eventually gives up his worldly trappings for a return to his vitality and to gain the woman he loves.
Jack London occasionally spends a little too much time generalizing and describing for my tastes, but the story is good and the narration well done.

Я перечитал эту книгу 12 лет спустя после первого прочтения в 2013 году, 23-летним юношей. С тех пор, я её уже забывал, но иногда возвращался в своих мыслях к ней. Сейчас же, перечитывая в 35 лет, с большим жизненным опытом и мудростью, мне было интересно отметить, как сильно я разделяю представления Элама Харниша о бизнесе, капитализме, жизнестойкости и женщинах.
Тем более было интересно читать эту книгу, потому что я узнал, что Джек Лондон её написал в 34 года, т.е. будучи почти моим ровесником. Интересно отметить, какая широта кругозора у него была в эти года: знания работы золотодобывающих приисков на Аляске, подробные представления о работе Нью-Йорской фондовой бирже, глубокий анализ механизмов работы капиталистического мира.
Читая таких именитых авторов, я всегда во многом воспринимаю их текст за истину в последней инстанции, я всегда ищу какую-то практическую пользу, даже в художественных произведениях, так и здесь, особенно в 23 года, я читал эту книгу и относился к её тексту с пиететом, как к чему-то, что является неоспоримой и несомненной правдой.
Сейчас же, в 35 лет, я читаю и понимаю, что это всего лишь мнение одного человека, его перспектива, его позиция, сложившаяся, как и у всех, ввиду его собственных жизненных обстоятельств, набора генов, предпочтений. Это позиция Джека Лондона. Тем не менее, она была мне близка в 23 года, она также мне близка в 35.
О чём книга?
Книга о трансформациях, переживаемых главным героем. Он – выдающейся витальности (любви к жизни, животной силы, желания жить, ума) молодой золотоискатель (29 лет) на Аляске. Он ищет золото сам и сам ковыряет землю киркой в надежде найти большое месторождение и его застолбить. Когда у него это получается, он создаёт бизнес-предприятие, подряжает людей, строит дома, дороги, успешно разрабатывая первое месторождение и получая большую прибыль. Потом он проворачивает это несколько раз и за несколько лет становится долларовым мультимиллионером. Это период золотоискательства.
Потом он переезжает в начале в Нью-Йорк, а затем в Сан-Франциско, чтобы играть, как он говорит, в другую игру: игру бизнеса. Он замечает, что здесь нужно также нужно бороться, только не с природными обстоятельствами и слабостью собственного организма, а с другими людьми, нужно лишь выучить правила и законы этой новой для него игры. Он принимается за это: изучает рынок, правила ведения бизнеса, даже берёт курсы английского и этикета, чтобы полнее вписаться в новые для себя обстоятельства и не выглядеть чужаком. Он живёт своим простым трудом, на натуральном хозяйстве, работая только тогда, когда ему нужны деньги. Это конечно, радикальная хуйня.
Это не проигрыш, а отказ от игры (как и монашеская жизнь), ведь он заметил, что, даже играя он теряет себя. Впрочем, сейчас пишу это и мне кажется, что европейские пенсионеры так и живут: они перестают играть на пенсии и если им повезло накопить деньжат за жизнь, они просто начинают их тратить.
Тема 4
Внутренняя трансформация: мужлан золотоискатель => воротила бизнеса => потерявший себя миллионер => мудрец, смогший отказаться от своих богатств ради простой жизни в деревне со своей любимой женщиной.
В третьей и заключительной части книги главный герой осознает, что истинное удовлетворение приходит не от власти и богатства, а от простых радостей жизни и искренних человеческих отношений. Именно поэтому он решает засыпать золотую жилу, обнаружившуюся на своём участке, т.к. опасается, что погоня за её разработкой заставит его опять потерять себя и свою супругу.

"Radiosa Aurora", questo era il soprannome dato ad Elam Harnish, un cercatore d’oro che nonostante i suoi soli trent’anni era già considerato un veterano dello Yukon, un uomo forte, sprezzante del pericolo, intelligente, ben voluto, coraggioso e con l’amore per le scommesse; sarà proprio perdendo una di queste che, per ricostruirsi una fortuna, si metterà nuovamente sulle tracce dell’oro e con la sua visione nitida del futuro riuscirà ad arricchirsi e da semplice cercatore diventerà un grande proprietario di miniere e di terreni edificabili che poi venderà per spostarsi nella "civiltà" di San Francisco e New York, conoscendo grandi magnati, imparando a giocare in borsa e compiendo grosse speculazioni, tutte cose che a lungo andare modificheranno, peró, spaventosamente la sua persona e logoreranno il suo corpo e la sua anima.

"Radiosa Aurora", scritto da London nel 1910 è un piacevole libro che vuole far comprendere quanto spesso la cosiddetta civiltà assetata di potere e denaro sia in realtà molto più "selvaggia" che la natura stessa, questo romanzo vuole essere un messaggio e un monito per chi legge, il sapersi accontentare delle cose semplici, delle piccolezze, l’apprezzare l’Amore e i sentimenti in favore del denaro, oggetto fine a se stesso ma che puó rovinare anima e corpo delle persone, è il tesoro più grande.
Il libro é ambientato alla fine dell’800 e principalmente su 4 "palcoscenici", le distese innevate dello Yukon, San Francisco, New York e la valle di Sonoma e se nella prima parte ci troveremo alle prese con fiumi ghiacciati, piccole cittadine minerarie, cani da slitta, setacci, polvere d’oro, incidenti di viaggio, saloon, freddo pungente e privazioni, nella seconda saremo al cospetto di grandi investitori, salotti, speculazioni, macchine fiammanti, alcool, cene sontuose e affaristi senza scrupoli.
Avendo letto molto di questo scrittore, mi sento di affermare che probabilmente Radiosa Aurora risulta essere il protagonista meno "simpatico" e umano dei tanti che London ha saputo regalarci, poco "umanizzato" e approfondito nelle sue sfaccettature tanto da non rimanere quasi per nulla impresso nella mente del lettore, a differenza invece di Dede, la segretaria di cui si innamorerà che, attraverso le sue affermazioni e il suo essere scostante, risulterà, secondo me, decisamente più "a fuoco" come personaggio.
Il racconto è praticamente scevro di dialoghi se non in pochi passaggi e la storia si sviluppa quasi sempre in terza persona, cosa questa che probabilmente porta ad empatizzare poco con i personaggi che mano a mano si incontreranno durante il racconto, la stessa velocità della narrazione risulterà scostante lungo tutto il racconto, se infatti nella prima parte, molto più avventurosa, ci troveremo davanti a ritmi più sostenuti, la seconda risulterà decisamente più lenta ma mai capace di annoiare proprio perchè densa di significati e di emozioni legate allo sviluppo della storia d’amore fra i due protagonisti.
"Radiosa Aurora" pare quasi ricalcare, anche se in maniera più enfatizzata e romanzata, gran parte della vera vita di London, anche lui infatti fu un cercatore d’oro (con peró scarsa fortuna), si innamoró e sposó in seconde nozze una donna (anche lei come la protagonista femminile del libro, dattilografa e indipendente), ebbe problemi di alcolismo e come il protagonista del romanzo si ritiró in un grande ranch.
Ho trovato questo romanzo di London abbastanza particolare, quasi "in bilico", meno a fuoco di altri suoi scritti e nonostante scorra bene alla lettura non risulta essere così iconico come altre sue produzioni, ció non toglie peró che meriti di essere letto e gustato per la sua piacevolezza.
Ma il richiamo delle origini e un amore nato quasi per caso con la sua segretaria lo faranno tornare piano piano sui suoi passi.

It's hard to believe that this was one of the big bestsellers of 1910 and one of London's most successful novels (according to Wikipedia). Imagine a cross between Frank Norris and Zane Grey and you'll have the general style, although I'm not sure London's style is any better than Grey's. The novel is in three sections. Section 1 is a Klondike tale with Elam Harnish, better known as "Burning Daylight" because of his enormous vitality, described in superman-like terms. He drinks and he dances and he gambles and he digs for gold. He's able to drive dog teams so hard that he tires out three Indians in one trip. This part reads like James Hendryx, a pulp action writer of the 1920s, author of such gems as Yukon Gold. In part 2 Burning Daylight decides to take all the millions he's earned in the gold fields (he's bought up lots of claims, hired men to dig for him, and set up drilling machines and water conduits so he's cornered the market) and moves to San Francisco where he becomes as hard charging a businessman as he was a Klondike man. At first he's gullible and taken in by sharpies, but he learns and becomes enormously successful, wreaking vengeance on those who have fooled him, including rich robber barons, three of whom he holds at gunpoint. He has no friends and thinks little of everyone, even those he drinks with. In part 3 love enters the picture. Daylight has been a man's man and afraid of women. He eventually falls in love with his stenographer who is very efficient and a splendid horsewoman. She won't marry him because he's too wrapped up in business, even though he has $30 million. To show her that he can do good with his money, he decides to expand and improve the city of Oakland, building homes, improving transportation, creating a port, etc. But this takes all his time and Dede won't marry him, if all he ever thinks about is business. Although he has just about successfully navigated through a financial panic, he gives it all up, marries her, and moves to a ranch in the Valley of the Moon in Sonoma County where he can live by the work of his hands and enjoy nature. At the end he discovers gold on his property, but decides to cover it up so that he can continue to live the simple life.

These books are my earliest memorymemory in adventure genre . this paticular novel i started multipal times and found it rather boring.... But for nows it was an imporant read, since in myself fed up with the city life

When Jack London is at his best, he is a great writer, but he cranked out a lot words over the course of his career and his quality was not consistent. Burning Daylight is a good book where London's simple style is put to good use in portraying the simple, high energy, charismatic hero. There is a lot to like here - particularly the Alaska story in the beginning of the book and the description of life on the hero's ranch in London's beloved Glen Ellen at the end. But there is also a lot of cliche -- stereotyped characters and situations that lack originality and that drag down the overall quality of the book. And I found London's treatment of the world of big business to be less than completely satisfying, certainly not at the level of Dreiser's "Financier" which I read earlier this year. But ultimately Daylight is a character you just can't resist. The force of his personality effectively pulls the book along and makes it a fun read.

Interesting insights, shallow story
I like the criticism of the search for money that doesn’t bring fulfillment. And I’m even willing to give it a pass on the unidimensional portrait of women - one girl is simply called “The Virgin” - since the book was written a century ago,
But I cannot get over how unrealistic the characters are. Burning Light is a guy that Luck decide to bless and everything he touches turns to Gold. He rarely has a set back, and if it happens, it’s short-lived. He always wins again his enemies, doesn’t take no from a girl as an answer and the story would be better if it was more realistic. Good insights that you have to dig deep to find - like the gold described in the story.

This was a mixed bag for me.
The opening section I absolutely loved. Daylight in Alaska. Barely surviving. Gambling on gold and winning big.
Then came Daylight in San Fran and this was good, but not as good as in Alaska. He was out of his depth but still gambling.
Then he gets really rich. I didn't like this bit, and I don' t think we are meant to. Daylight losea who he is.
Then we get the romance which I really didn't like. This was going downhill
Then Daylight goes to the valley and I was back to really enjoying it.
It was certainly a journey.

this is the narrative of the Klondike that I thought i would find in call of the wild! excellent read!
it got a little wordy in part two, and I sincerely wondered at times when it would end, but I did enjoy it immensely

I love Jack London's way of writing, He knows how to slowly weave a story. This book started out as a rough and tumble story of the "gold rush" in Alaska, and ended with a very soft and sweet love story. I listened to it on Librivox .

Loved this book. I was used to his short stories, and I didn't realize the trove of wonderful novels he wrote. It's a man's equivalent to Pride and Prejudice for a woman. I've read P&P twice, so some women may like the book too. That's not great logic, but take it for what it's worth.

A good Jack London Yukon adventure tale gets mucked up with a truly sappy, unbelievable love story and some horrendously naive anti-capitalist politics. Best to read the first part (107 pages) and then stop.

Thrilling story which follows development of main character. Searching for ideals in life. It was focused on psychology of the main character but it also gives fundamental questions about the goals in life and how to fulfil one’s potential. I was reading it at one sitting.
