I absolutely loved this audiobook. I’ve read a few academy books but this is my first Valkyrie book.

Ylva wants to become a Valkyrie, make friends in high places and befriend a wolf. What she doesn’t expect is a quirky roommate, friends from other species and a connection to a wolf that could lead her down a path she can’t return from.

There are some really interesting characters in this book. This is only the beginning but the chance at love, death and magic I’m hooked.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I also got a free copy of the Ebook via Amazon. This has an engaging narrator and I felt she could easily be Ylva. Awesome start to an academy series.

I really enjoyed this book – and it looks like it will be the start of a very good series.
Thanks to “Harry Potter”, there are now many supernatural series now set in boarding school. There is often the ‘in’ and ‘out’ crowd, something (or somebody) threatening the school and the pupils, and a learning curve that our hero(es) will go through. All those expected tropes pop up here, and there are also nods to the Pern dragon books, with the Valkyries imprinting their dusk wolf familiars.
But just as you start to assume which way the story will go (because that is how it always goes) – there is a quick twist. For a start, the pupils are learning how to guide dead human souls to their designated afterlife. The school is split into three very distinct groups – depending on which humans they will be responsible for. Our heroine, Ylva, is a Valkyrie, and of course believes that the Valkyries are naturally superior:
“Why did we have to have joint classes with other elementals anyway? Shinigami were intolerable and Reapers were at the bottom of the Afterlife Assistant chain.”

She has had little to deal with elementals of other races – but after she gets over her initial antipathy towards the ‘others’, her curiosity wins out, and she learns that ‘different’ does not mean inferior (though the jury remains out on the Reapers)
“I hadn't had much contact with other elemental types beside my own. Apart from the occasional passerby, my Dragon roommate and Wood Elf classmate were the most interaction I'd had with different races.”
“They sure were all different from me. Intriguing. Their rituals and traditions were completely foreign to me and it fascinated me. Despite my apprehension and reluctance, I wanted to get to know more about them.”

There is a slow burning romance – again not an expected one – and one that does not really get underway – at least yet.
To become a top-notch Valkyrie, Ylva believes she has to get in with the most popular Valkyrie set – and avoid her school nemesis, Astrid.
“I closed my eyes, weighing the things I wanted against each other. Being popular, befriending Flavia, shining as a Valkyrie. Yes. But I also wanted to stay true to myself, to be honest in the pursuit of my dreams. Even if that meant... "I'll stick with the Elf," I declared”

In most books, Flavia would be a nasty piece of work, ready to crush anyone she deemed below her, and Astrid’s animosity would continue unbounded – but both will surprise you.
Apart from the social readjustments, Ylva notices that all is not right with the Academy. The teachers are heavily preoccupied – often absent – and the dusk wolves disappear.
Ylva also has to re-evaluate everything she has believed about the glory of battle, and the sacred duty of the Valkyrie bringing the fallen heroes to their deserved place in Valhalla:
“"Humanity has declared war on itself again." "So? They do that all the time." … "Not like this. Never like this. If they don't destroy the planet while they're alive, they'll rip it apart when they're dead."”

Is the world about to end? And what will Ylva, her friends and fellow students be able to do to stop it?
I can hardly wait until the next instalment.

Rounding down because the ending didn't feel like a real ending. More like a very big cliffhanger/teaser for book two. I would have almost preferred ending the story around the 75-80% mark, but understand how that doesn't do much to entice the reader to keep going, or hint at the larger problem that must be solved.

The story is interesting since we follow a character that is very Euro inspired and her first experience with other cultures is at this Afterlife Academy. Its a bit awkward to read her microaggressions/racism but it does feed into her eventual growth.

The romance is a very slow burn and does not resolve by the end of this first book. The love interest and the main character have some decent chemistry despite all the drama. I do ship them and hope the pining and angst will pay off later in the series.

Tape has a lot of sapphic paranormal reads that are light, fun, and feelgood. While I am not sure how this series will play out, I do recommend giving her a try with whatever series strikes your interest.

So the first thing I noticed were the mistakes.

I think the biggest issue I had with this story was the fact no race knew anything at all about other races. For example, Ylva knew nothing about Dragons or vice versa. What did they learn prior to going to the Academy? Why would they have not learned at least the basics of every race? Even stranger, Ylva’s mother has a wolf companion yet has no clue what the wolf’s purpose is. How? Did she never ask her mother? How would that have even been possible? Wouldn’t that have been something to learn about prior to going to the Academy?

The relationship between the girls seemed forced, in my opinion. Their interactions up until Ryoko finds out Ylva only wants to be friends was just friendly banter. There was nothing flirty about their interactions. It was like with her constantly thinking about what kind of relationship they had, Ylva was forced, in a way, to fall for Ryoko. Since they were roommates, it was the natural course.

I’m not a fan of stories that leave me with questionable writing or tons of unanswered questions.

In the end I couldn’t finish. I imagine Ylva will end up realizing she's a lesbian, if not... I just felt like there was too much going on in this story that wasn't explained very well.

Questions/Comments:

I couldn’t help but notice Pickles was referred to as it, he, and she.

Ylva had arrived at the Academy with three duffle bags and two “massive” suitcases. My thinking is that when a detail like this is mentioned a good while after the character arrived, in this case, why wouldn’t it have been mentioned prior? As it reads, she arrived with no problem. She went to the dragon at the reception desk to check-in and there was never any mention of her arms/back being full of bags.

“She pulled up her eyebrows.” I can’t say I’ve ever heard a description of someone raising their eyebrows this way.

Ylva watches Ryoko make the potato salad. There’s mention of the ingredients going into the recipe, mayo being one. Yet, when Ylva’s at the dinner party, she can’t help but notice there’s mayo in the potato salad and thinks that’s a strange ingredient. When asked what was in the recipe, she doesn’t really seem to know.

Ylva tells the popular head girl that she wants to “Serve. Odin, warriors, the world.” Isn’t that her purpose as a Valkyrie? What else would she have done after graduating?

Ryoko is making a rice dinner when Ylva arrives. Ylva again watches her cook, sitting down next to her. But when Ryoko is finished and questions Ylva about her wolf bite, she has to “shuffle” over to Ylva. They were sitting next to each other though. There was no shuffling needed.

Ryoko offers Ylva some ointment for her wolf bite. “Did I want some weird oil on my wound?” When would an ointment ever be described as an oil? Maybe a cream or paste, and it could be described as being greasy, but not an oil. Yet, when she gets the ointment that was made from herbs and plants (kind of the same thing), it’s described as an oily substance. I don’t know. This may be stupid but there are certain things, like this, that just scream out to me because it just seems like a questionable thing to say.

Prior to heading over to the Barn, Ylva is lying in bed. Her eyes are used to the dark, yet she couldn’t see where the wardrobe was…

The Valkyries in training need to imprint with a wolf. What happens if they do and they don’t graduate for whatever reason? I remember the head lady telling them that they had a limited supply of pups as well. That would make me think the imprinting would happen closer to graduation, not the first week.

There are a few areas in the story in which those in training to become Valkyries are referred to as simply being Valkyries. See, this is another area that stood out to me. They’re in training, they aren’t already Valkyries. For example, when Ryoko wants to touch one of the pups, Ylva tells her that she needs to get the Valkyries permission first.

I found it strange that the author referred to Ryoko’s sweater as a jumper when her sweater had been referred to as a sweater several times prior to the jumper comment.

Ylva wakes up in the infirmary. “I slipped off the bed and placed my feet on the cold ground.” Where were her shoes if she can feel the ground is cold? Why wouldn’t she have looked for them prior to heading back to her dorm?

“Ritsled” was used when Ylva was in the Barn. “The hay rustled and ritsled under our shoes…”
Strangely, this doesn’t seem to be a real word as I couldn’t find anything on it.

Strangely, when in the Barn with Ryoko, there’s mention of how the pups will get red eyes when they’re older… even though when Ylva looks at her pup, his eyes are red. Then, later on, she thinks of him and his blue eyes.

Ylva has just befriended Pickles and she asks Ryoko of Dragon beliefs, then decides she’s unsure of what Ryoko is acting like she’s offended Ryoko even though she had learned why they had to bunk together earlier and that Ryoko was a Dragon.

Ryoko realizes that Ylva hasn’t been flirting with her. Ylva feels guilty and wonders if she should just marry Ryoko out of awkwardness. Huh?

She’s been so focused on becoming a Valkyrie that she hasn’t thought about love… or who she’s attracted to? That seems strange given the fact she doesn’t seem to know very much about anything.

Ylva wonders why any of the teachers would go out of their way to help her find the wolves. Ah… Why wouldn’t she have just told her teacher, especially when so much time (months) go by?

Why would Ylva think that Ryoko (a first-year) could help guide in the Veil when she’d been considering third-year students who were more experienced?

I was worried I was not going to like it. But oh-boy i was wrong! It was such a fun easy read. I wanted to kick Ylva in the ass sometimes though, especially how she hurt Ryoko. Ylva is spunky, sassy but also a little annoying. But hopefully this relationship of theirs will change in the next book/s. Because honestly Ryoko was adorable, polite and cute and her Dust Bunny(?) was so cute, I mean – Pickles? Come on! Do not get me started on Hyde, Ylva`s Dusk Wolf. So cute! I can just image – I hope he gets reunited with Ylva, or else i`ll be incredible mad.

This was an incredible start to a new series! Ylva is starting her journey at Afterlife Academy, the school for training afterlife assistants, in hopes to become a Valkyrie. Nothing is like she thought it would be- a wood elf is training to become a Valkyrie instead of a Reaper, she has a dragon for a roommate, classes are getting cancelled left and right, and the dusk wolf and her pups go missing. Human death is at an all time high and every student’s studies are accelerated even though most first years are unsure or not knowledgeable about what they’re being taught. I really enjoyed watching Ylva grow in this book from being prejudice to accepting of other elementals. Her relationship is a very slow burn and rocky with Ryoko and I hope to see things turned around with more growth in the coming books. Pickles, Ryoko’s pet dust bunny, was completely original and I loved every scene that she was in! I can’t wait to see what happens next on Ylva’s journey and seeing the mystery unfold!

Arizona Tape’s first book in The Afterlife Academy series - Valkyrie 101 is a fabulous beginning to this new series.

As Ylva’s story develops her life at the academy is anything but as straight forward as she might have thought, whilst she trains to become an Afterlife Assistant.

Valkyrie 101 has an original twist on an academy style story and I loved the relationship building between Ryoko and Ylva.

I highly recommend Valkyrie 101 and can’t wait for Valkyrie 102.

I was so caught up in the story that I had to download the next one immediately. I love the characters and the story is so original. I really started to think about the afterlife and how this might work. Get imaginary. The narrator was very good as well. I just can’t wait to start the next book.

A real experience!

Ylva has arrived for her first year at the Afterlife Academy. Ambitious, she is ready to get to training to become a Valkyrie but things aren’t quite right at the Academy and it isn’t only Ylva who notices. With the teachers acting aloof, and rising demand for human souls to be collected, Ylva finds herself on the brim of adventure when she starts navigating Academy life, and when she finds she might be the only one who can help with the ongoing issues, Ylva learns there is more to her destined future than she imagined.

A thrilling fantasy story packed with adventure and magical wonder that I just loved. With every chapter of this story I was more and more enthralled. The goings on at Afterlife Academy were mysterious to say the least and I was completely intrigued by Ylva, her peers, and her rivals. Life for Ylva was more and more exciting, yet scary with each chapter and I got very invested in all she was trying to achieve.

Ylva was one of those characters, ambitious, confident but clueless. She had no idea what was waiting for her, in the Academy, in her friendships, her relationships, and when she created tension between her and her roommate due to her missing signs of a mutual attraction, it just added to all the drama, created amazing tension, and complicated the issues Ylva faced even more. She really had quite the dilemma and she had to handle things sensitively, learning that friends were more important that just having the ones with the right status.

It was such an exciting read that I am definitely looking forward to reading more in the Afterlife Academy series and can’t recommend it enough. It covers so many amazing areas, urban fantasy, magic and even perfect for Young Adults too. If you aren’t sure about paranormal fantasy stories, this would be a great one to start with because I guarantee you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did.

This was an exciting start to a new series with an intriguing premise. Every student in the Afterlife Academy must learn how to collect souls from the recently departed to usher them onto the afterlife, but there are several types of roles they can take which are mostly dictated by race. Ylva is studying to become a valkyrie she is a Wind Child. There are also others like Reapers, Shinigami, and Wood Elves. The races are mostly separated in the school, but there is some conflict caused by things like Ylva’s roommate is a Dragon (studying to be a Shinigami) and there is a Wood Elf in the Valkyrie program. So Ylva has to learn more about the other races and compromise with them.

This is also a lesbian romance with growing attraction between Ylva and her roommate, the Dragon Ryoko. Ylva doesn’t seem to have considered her own sexual orientation before, so it comes as a shock to her that she’s developing feelings for another girl… particularly one of another race. This pushes Ylva to grow outside of her comfort zone and think about life from other people’s perspectives.

I enjoyed learning about all the Valkyrie classes and magic. The wolves, which act like partners or familiars to the Valkyries, were especially fun and cute. There is a mystery at the heart of the plot, but it doesn’t make much progress until the very end. The story ends on a cliff-hanger to be resolved in future books.

It’s mostly a light, fun read with cute lesbians and puppies. The writing isn’t particularly skillful with occasional errors in grammar and continuity, but not enough to make me want to stop reading. I will probably pick up future books in the series soon so I can find out what happens next.

I picked this book up for free on Kindle. It was on a list for a Fantasy 'Stuff-Your-Kindle' Day. This book initially caught my attention with its 'Sapphic Fantasy' label. I was ultimately disappointed and ended up DNFing the book at about 15% completion.

I tend to read halfway through a book before DNFing it. This book nearly threw me back into a reading slump I just pulled myself out of. The main character makes some horrifically racist remarks about a non-Valkyrie line student in her class and towards her Japanese-Dragon roommate. I'm not sure how I feel about the division of classes by species/race and Ylva's determination to reinforce stereotypes and traditions as this norm is disrupted. The excuse for Ylva's racism is that none of the races know anything about each other. I don't understand how that is possible when everyone (including the parents) attends the same school with other races/species at some point in time.

The main character is an absolute airhead and judgemental as hell. I get it, she is technically a high schooler, and some high schoolers suck, but Ylva is downright unbearable. She's mean-spirited, dumber than a bag of rocks, and comes across as incredibly racist. She justifies her "weird feeling" about her Dragon roommate Ryoko to justify her casual racism even though the author tries to allude to it being a crush.

There were a lot of grammatical errors and inconsistencies in the beginning of the book. I understand that this is a self-published (through Tape's indie-press). In the day and age of spellcheck that can catch the most minor errors and inconsistencies in writing, there really is no excuse for the number of mistakes in this book.

Frankly, I cannot get into this book. I have read so much YA Fantasy, but this one failed to capture my attention. I don't understand why and how this book (and the whole series) maintains a 4.0+ rating. Maybe the books get better. Perhaps Ylva becomes a redeemable, likeable character. I guess I have an automatic turn-off for whiny, racist FMCs.

This is a really, really good first book in a series. It's based on Viking and other fantasy type beings and situations and involves a school that various groups attend. There are those who plan to become Valkyries, those who will become Reapers, Elves, Dragons and others.

They are also divided by jobs as Valkyries will carry the souls of the honored dead to Valhalla, Reapers will harvest souls and there also guardians, angels, banshees and Shinigami.

That becomes one theme in the book. Another theme revolves around Ylva, a woman who will become a Valkryie and Hotaru, a Dragon who is basically externally physical human but with a form of scales, who are roommates. Their is a lot of misunderstanding on Ylva's part and her relationship with Hotaru is very complicated and doesn't always work out.

Then there's a third theme and this involves something going terribly wrong outside the school, resulting in very little actual teaching being done, students left to learn on their own and when there are classes they jump directly form what should be an introductory form to an advanced form.

Being a school there is inevitably bullying and a lot of it gets directed Ylva's way. There's also a time of bonding with wolf cubs who will become the companions of the Valkyries and for Ylva this doesn't go well, to say the least.

Behind all this, though, is something even worse going on and what happens then is even wilder.

This is without doubt one of the best introductory books to a new series that I have ever read.

This was my second time reading a book that involved Valkyries but the characters were definitely more authentic and variety in general. There were dragons, wind child, reapers and it's definitely interesting for me to see how all these creatures were living together in an Afterlife Academy. Unfortunately, I don't see any of them dwelling together or learn more about them in this book. Is it because it's the first book, I wonder. Most of the characters were hostile to one another so it was tough for me to feel some sort of connection.

The main character Ylva is the kind of girl who wants to make her mother and family proud. All her life she's only been surrounded by her own species so at the first ten chapters of the book, she was really reluctant in making friends with other species and she fell on the 'racist-like' scale and I found her super annoying at some point. But glad she warmed up to her elf friend and dragon roommate after the tenth chapter. She is also quite adventurous in an irrational and spontaneous way which often leads to disaster and till the end, Ylva kind of became a one-dimensional character to me. I wonder if these traits of her will gradually change in the second book because it kind of puts me off some times. This book ended in a cliffhanger when we just found out what was about to happened and maybe I should give it a shot on the second book.

Stepping onto the grounds of the Afterlife Academy, Ylva is ecstatic. She's always wanted to be a Valkyrie like the other females in her family. At the school, students learn to help human souls pass onto the next phase. She's determined to be the best there ever was, but it's a bumpy start when her roommate turns out to be a dragon and a peppy elf tries to befriend her. Plus classes keep getting canceled and the teachers are whispering about things Ylva doesn't understand. She's going to solve the mystery, though, but will doing so end with her needing a guide to the afterlife?

This is a great start to this urban fantasy academy series. Ylva is a bit stuck up at the beginning, but her biases soon crumble as her eyes are opened to the world beyond the culture of the Wind Children (which she is). I especially love Ylva's Dragon roomie, Ryoko, and the wonderful descriptions of her. There is romantic tension between them, but Ylva doesn't know what to do with it. It's sweet and not rushed, and I can't wait to see where their possible relationship may go in future books. There is a lot happening on many layers, and I love the concept of a school where supernatural beings go to learn how to help human souls carry on to their appointed afterlives. I wanted to hug a dusk wolf no matter how fierce they are, and the dust bunny is just plain adorable!

Lighthearted YA college fantasy book highlighting troubles of humanity at war

There are 9 books in the series and it’s highly addictive, you’ve been warned. Ylva Helgudottir enrolls at Afterlife Academy, wanting her wings, her own wolf & the keys to Valhalla. Afterlife assistants learn all there is about afterlife care and death and assisting the souls in the Afterlife Academy. Tbh, I didn’t like Ylva at the beginning due to her attitudes towars other species, but she grew on me. I loved the idea of someone being flexible on the dying and that Valkyries have their own shadow wolves. Though Ylva’s age is never mentioned, the book is very YA - high school cliques & bullying, coming of age discovering one’s feelings etc. I loved how the author dripfeeds the Nordic myths&legends & constructs her own universe of it by mixing in repaers & dragon & fae. There’s FF flirting with potential for romance in later books. An enjoyable read, might look up the other books after the summer reading challenge & clearing my current tbr list (or else the books on my tbr will go all meme-y on me). Ends in a cliffhanger to guide you to the next book, Valkyrie 201. 4.5 stars.

Recommended for lovers of YA high-school and college fantasy, Nordic & Celtic & Germanic myths&legends and FF slow-build romance with teen self-discovery.

****I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy****
So this is a good academy to start. It has intrigue, a little mystery, some bullying and a confused girl. The main character is Ylva and she is going to the Academy for the afterlife. She has been wanting to become a Valkyrie since she was little. She wasn't born in a noble family and feels that she has to accomplish a lot to bring pride and recognition for her family. She makes friends with a Dragon, Wood Elf and other Wind Children. However, it seems that she approached things wrong and messes up. She also has never been in a relationship, so she doesn't realize when she is flirting or being friendly. She has a hard time trying to distinguish the two. Once she realizes that she has made a mistake she does try to rectify the situation. But will it be too late for friendships and maybe love. Guess we will have to wait to find out. She also stumbles across another predicament, that no one seems to know about. Can she do what is needed to be done to come out alive? This book builds up and leaves you wanting more. Can't wait to see what happens.

Ylava of the West, daughter of Helga, a fierce Wind Child was determined to become a Valkyrie. She starts at the Academy to begin training to help souls pass over after death. To be a great Valkyrie she needs a Dusk Wolf to be a companion and sort of familiar. She is determined, driven and has so much to learn. But things at the Academy are not going as smoothly as possible.

Arizona Tape has created an amazing new series filled with a multitude of great paranormal characters and interesting situations. As the storyline progresses, the reader learns about the concept of helping souls from different cultures. She weaves her tale, of a young girl trying to become a Valkyrie, using creative dialogue, descriptive scenery, interesting, highly complex characters and many unique and varied twists and turns. The result is a paranormal drama filled with action, suspense and emotional drama. It is a well written book and I can not wait until I get to read the next instalment.

This is the first book in The Afterlife Academy series - Valkyrie 101 is a fabulous beginning to this new series.
The author has created a very interesting world in this series.
Ylva has been accepted into the Afterlife Academy. She is single-minded, ambitious and still growing into herself as a woman.
Strong characters which are very well written.
Great story line and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

The Worst Witch meets the TV show Legacies

SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: non-human character, out of your comfort zone, not a romance, possibly other categories

I enjoyed the above mentioned TV shows, and that made it easy for me to enjoy the story. The mix of mythologies and their beings associated with death was another interesting facet. However, I had an issue with the MCs supernatural discrimination/speciesism. The character's and others' attitudes reflected the intolerance of the different species at the "death" school. There was a little tolerance, but not as much acceptance towards the end of the story.

I believe that the author was trying to relate it to current phobias and intolerances, but for some reason, all of it bothered me. The characters were young adults, and it's possible that their species cliques just reflected younger people's disrespect towards others similar to nowadays. I liked the rest of it enough to buy the next book, though.

This book had an interesting vibe and a main character very complex. Raised in prejudiced environment but confronted to the fact that maybe the others are not so bad, in additions with new challenges, Ylva grows a lot in this first book. That's the point I liked the most: this opening of mind as we turn each page. Of course, I loved the world and characters building too. I mean dragons, elf and magnificent but dangerous creatures with a complete background given by small touch at key points in the text? It was really well written without being a boring encyclopedia. Only downside: the lack of explanatio as to why no men are Valkyries and their roles in the wind-children people. And then there was the plot’s secrets giving a dark ambiance to the academy of After-life Assistant. Are you ready for some accelerated course in Valkyries role?

After reading some pretty 'heavy' books I felt like relaxing with a more laid back one so I got this free from Amazon and wow did I luck out.
Don't think Harry Potter. Ylva kind of reminds me of myself on my first trip overseas from the US to Taiwan and when I say the US I mean the rural deep south US too many years ago. Well I was expecting, I don't know what, maybe Bruce Lee, certainly mysterious people but what I got was nice ordinary folks doing ordinary things, earning a living, paying taxes possible nicer food though but disappointing in a way. This book shows Ylva growing up from a not very nice person to a better albeit imperfect (aren't we all) one.
The supporting cast is nicely done and the romance is powder waiting on a spark but not ruining the story.
On the strength of this I have gotten the next three in the series and am looking forward to developments.

I started the book, feeling like I really wanted the main character to be put down a peg or two...she was rude, full of herself and just a plain pain to watch. As I progressed through the book, she calmed down, admitted that she needed help and opened herself up to new experiences. I could totally get behind a character like that!
The storyline is amazing and original - the writing is at a professional standard, the characters are intriguing and the events of the book kept me on the edge of my seat.
I really look forward to reading the next book and quietly hope that Ylva recieves her reward for working so hard on her goals.

Pure escapist fun. In this book there’s a lot of telling rather than showing, but that seems normal in UF. It also made for an easy read which is nice after reading a complex and prose dense novel like Girls of Paper and Fire.

I did enjoy this story but I would be lying if I said that there wasn’t much of a plot. There is one, but the story moves at a weird pace. Of course, this is an introductory book so I’m sure the next one fills in some blanks.

This book felt like a prologue than it did an actual book. So I am excited to see who Ylva ends up with.

There are a few punctuation errors in this book but it’s not distracting. This was pretty solid.

I love Valkyries so I was quite excited to see Arizona Tape's academy book is all about Valkyries. I love the classes and learning about the veil and Valhalla. We head to The Afterlife Academy with Ylva and find her training to become an afterlife assistant is not quite what she was expecting.

I love the side characters and seeing the difference in the Wind Children, Dragons, and Wood Elves. The budding friendship/relationship between Ylva and Ryoko is so sweet. Pickles the dust bunny is so adorable, I want one of my own. There's a lot packed into this quick read that left me eagerly awaiting more.

Valkyrie 101 is an interesting and original storyline. This author has created an amazing world filled with intriguing characters and a story that pulled me in and had me on the edge of my seat. Ylva wants to become a Valkyrie and she gets her chance once she's enrolled at the Afterlife Academy. This paranormal story is filled with drama, mystery, action, rivalries, suspense, new friendships and so much more. I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Say you wanted to write a book on Norse mythology. You always wondered how the Valkyries came to be and knew how to do their thing. Clearly you would need someplace for them to be educated - hence the Afterlife Academy. Now you need to wrap this story around something, how about "Mean Girls" and struggling to come to understand Lesbian life. Now you've got the story. Throw in some Dust Bunnies and some Wolves to bring in the cute factor. Tell it well, which she does, and you have a story.

Unfortunately it ends just as the action becomes interesting.

Interesting

It took me a while to get around to this book. I actually purchased it a while ago. And while scrolling my TBR not sure what to read, I decided to give it a try.

I should have read it sooner, I actually enjoyed it. Even though I don't know what is happening between Ylva and Ryoko, I hope they can work things out between them. There obviously is a connection between them, but with the problems happening at the academy, who knows what will happen.

On to the next book.
