It takes a monster to catch one.ZANE WALKER-FBI, Magickal Crimes Division There's a reason the bureau sends me undercover with the worst drug cartels in the world-my magick is as illegal and dirty as the enhancers they peddle. Just the kind that "Pennies" Machnik-Dziki crime lord-likes to use on his enemies. Being his enforcer lets me keep my own monster locked up while I build a case against him. If I can bring Pennies in, maybe I can finally put the stigma of what I am behind me. But when people start overdosing on his street drugs, a beautiful witch storms in, making demands she thinks she can back up with magick. I have to make a split second choice... and the monster comes raging out.
EVER STRANGE-CEO, Strange Medical Technologies Someone has killed my father. They made it look like an overdose, but Asher Strange, the world-renown researcher of medical magick, never took an illegal drug in his life... much less tawdry magick enhancers. I run the family empire, but no one was more proud of the Strange family name than my father. A long line of us stretches back to the first days of High Magick-no way he would throw that away chasing a quick high. But before I can get an autopsy, my father's body disappears... and being a Level One mage and one of the richest women in the city means I will get answers.
Someone's putting deadly magick into street drugs... and it's killing people all over Chicago. Zane's magick is monstrous, and Ever's power brings out his beast. But she insists on finding her father; and keeping her safe has suddenly become his job-on top of stopping an epidemic of overdoses that just might be cover for a serial killer. Together, they work to stop the dark magick that's stalking the streets of Chicago... and try to keep their own secrets from consuming them both.
Ever Strange is the first book in a new paranormal romantic suspense series from bestselling romance author Alisa Woods. The first three books in the series (Ever Strange, Mercy Strange, Verity Strange) follow the three Strange sisters, each powerful witches in an influential magickal family embroiled in a mysterious plot to change everything about the magickal world. Part urban fantasy, Legal Magick takes place in an alternate Chicago where High Magick returned in 1859 and is now integral in every aspect of the legal-and illegal-world. Each book is a standalone romance.
Ever Strange By: Alisa Woods Narrated by: Lance Greenfield, Brooke Hayden A mage witch looking for justice for the murder of her father gets tangled up with the illegal magical drug mob and saved by an undercover cop that happens to be an incubus. They have to work together to try get get the bad guys and find her father's missing body! Hot, action packed, great characters, and loved the magic!😁 Narration was terrific!
I thought this an amusing, if shallowly developed, story. I picked it up because the blurb inferred that the male character used sex magic and the female one was a billionaire. I thought that subverted the norm, where woman are usually associated with sex and men with financial power. The book didn't really utilize it in any significant way though. The characters were actually pretty standard. She was plucky and, yes, rich, (but still somehow innocent and down to earth, of course) and he was extremely dangerous, dark and brooding (but not actually the psychopathic killer people think him, of course).
But I did like both characters. After the initial introduction we see a softer side of Zane that I appreciated. No alpha-asshole here! And Ever saved the day with her skill more than once. So, no wilting violets either. And the whole thing is easily readable with no contrived misunderstandings or too-stupid-to-live drama to complicate things. But the plot is pretty thin, the world basically sketched out, and and the whole thing more more fluff than depth. But I'd read the next book if it was put in front of me.
Ever is a high level witch who gets into the middle of an undercover agent's assignment. Ever gets involved with a drug lord after her father dies of a suspicious drug overdose. When his body disappears she is determined to find out what happened to him, and she knows Pennies is involved. She did not mean to get caught by his thugs while surveying him and she definitely doesn't understand the sudden lust filled dreams. She is a powerful level one mage, but she is no match for an incubus. But once she discovers that Zane works for the Magical Crimes Division of the FBI and they are investigating the numerous OD deaths and disappearing bodies, she is all in. She is new Magic. Zane is old magic.
Zane is an incubus. His mental magic sucks the sexual fantasies and wants right out into the own when he unleashes it on someone. He can literally suck them dry, and they will actually enjoy it. Unfortunately, his monster wants him to do just that over and over again. It causes him to vibrate with energy, and too much can make him drunk with power. If it wasn't for his control and his ability to bring down the bad guys he would have been locked away a long time ago. His current "boss" is a drug lord named Pennies Machnik and Zane is having a hard time getting the goods on him, at least with enough evidence to convict him of something. This is surprising considering the man is a simple with no magical ability. Everything starts to go to hell when the woman shows up to yell at Pennies and demand he tell her where her father's body is. What is going on? Forced to use his power on her to save her life he brings her home with him to protect her.
Zane and Ever are abut the most unlikely pairs to match up. He's from old magic considered dangerous and illegal. She's from new magic and almost royalty in their world. When their paths cross and Zane saves Ever from being murdered by a power hungry madman, they are both trying their best to keep their distance from each other or entirely different reasons. Zane because he feels he could drain her dry of her magic and kill her. He's not spent so many years battling the monster within to end up killing an innocent. On the other hand Ever is terrified that she's going to shoot Zane so full of her wild magic that he will implode when he can't absorb any more. She's already living with the guilt of having killed one man she loved and is not going to do that to Zane. Unfortunately they need to catch the person spreading deadly magic street drugs in the city. They also need to keep their secrets from each other, only it may be sharing their secrets that allows them to survive the onslaught of the mad serial killer dumping bodies outside the FBI headquarters each day.
I received an ARC for an honest review. Love the start of the series and look forward to reading more.
As a fan of Alisa Woods this book was definitely a turn in writing for me. The cast are not shifters but seem to be at least have dual natures. Think magic meets non-magical and the simplest don't like the status quo.
Zane beast of burden is one even the magical community detest. Why Ever's burden is extremely dangerous if not controlled. Chaos should be her middle name.
The author has done a great job in keeping the story line moving and interesting with this new series. Looking forward to reading the next book
Great start to a new series. This is a paranormal mystery with plenty of romance. Ever and Zane are great characters with lots of depth. The story has plenty of drama and intrigue and as the story progress it gets more and more intriguing. I really liked it.
Enemies-to-friends-to-lovers between demonic FBI agent and CEO witch while on the run from magic enabled drug dealers. Super creative premise and characters.
Ever is a very strange mage out to find out about her father's death. She never dreams she will run into the incubus Zane and a mob mess complete with missing bodies. It's a great mystery romance filled with danger, turmoil, magic and twists. The story hooked me from the start and I instantly fell in love with the characters. The plot is original and dynamic and will leave you craving the next book. I volunteered to read this book.
Great book to kick off a new series. Ever is a high level witch who gets into the middle of an undercover agent's assignment. Zane has no idea what to do with her, but he needs to stay undercover. What happens when you mix a high level witch and an incubus? A wonderful story that you need to read. I volunteered to read an advanced copy of this book.
Zane is an undercover FBI agent & an incubus. Ever is a witch. She gets caught in a situation that could get her killed, but Zane saves her. They end up teaming up together for an undercover sting on a drug boss that Zane has been trying to take down. I won't give any spoilers tho.
This is not one of my faves from Alisa. It has a really interesting plot with well-developed characters. I found the first few chapters slow & hard for me to get into, but I ended up enjoying the storyline. It has plot twists & surprises along the way. It has a HEA but it ends on a big cliffhanger with more unanswered questions. I rated this down since it started out slow & I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into the storyline. It deserves more than 3 stars but not a full 4, but that's just my opinion. Pick this one up & try it for yourself.
Ever Strange is an urban fantasy. Ever is a witch, who gets involved with a drug lord after her father dies of a suspicious drug overdose.
Zane Walker is an undercover FBI Magickal Crimes Agent. He has unusual skills which make him ideal to send out on the worse cases. Zane meets Ever when she is caught spying on a dangerous drug gang's business.
Missing persons, bodies left for the FBI and a cat with attitude are just some of the things you'll read about in this book.
I picked this story up after reading this author's paranormal romances. However I didn't enjoy this as much. I found the story dragged in places, particulalry the last third. There was also room for another round of editing, to take out repetative words and cliched expressions.
Wow. I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. I am not even sure why. It is a great piece of world building for one thing. In this world most everyone has magic of some kind. Some have powerful magic drawn from the earth. Some have powerful mental magic. Some have many gifts and some have just one weak talent. Then there are the simples, they have no magic of their own.
What the hell is going on? Forced to use his power on her to save her life he brings her home with him to protect her.
Ever Strange knows that there is no way her intelligent, powerful father overdosed on drugs. When his body disappears she is determined to find out what happened to him, and she knows Pennies is involved. She did not mean to get caught by his thugs while surveilling him and she definitely doesn't understand the sudden lust filled dreams. She is a powerful level one mage, but she is no match for an incubus. But once she discovers that Zane works for the Magickel Crimes Division of the FBI and they are investigating the numerous OD deaths and disappearing bodies, she is all in.
Find out what happens when an Incubus and a powerful witch decide to work together to bring down the bad guys.
At first, I was skeptical about this when I read about the whips Zane used on himself but he explained it to Ever so I was okay with it after that. AND he only whipped himself once to control the Incubus monster inside him.
Anyway, this wasn’t your usual romance, which is why I enjoyed it so much. Yeah, they had sex BUT it didn’t overpower the story-line. It was about a drug that people were overdosing on, only they weren’t, AND the dead who were disappearing from the morgue. Ever’s father was one of them that was supposed to have OD’d and disappeared but Ever wasn’t just going to let it go. Zane was an Incubus FBI agent who ended up working with Ever, so that’s how that came about.
It was a very good story and I will definitely read the second book when it comes out in May.
There was explicit sex in this but not until about 90%. And the F-bomb was used 89 times.
As to the narration: Absolutely perfect. Yeah, it had 2 narrators and they took turns, instead of her doing the female voices and him doing the males, but it was all wonderful. Lance Greenfield did a great job, but Brooke Hayden was phenomenal. She whispered and yelled and really sounded like she was crying a couple of times. I had never listened to her before but I will from now on.
backlog, so I was excited to read this new series from the moment it was mentioned. This is the first book of hers I've listened to (I read a bit of it, but mostly listened) and I have to say I'm well pleased to have purchased it.
I really enjoy audible books being done in duet (either true duet or by chapter like this one) so I was majorly excited to find this was done that way. For clarity, each chapter is written from either Zane or Ever's perspectives and the narrator is different for each character. I find it makes listening to a book much more immersive when each perspective has its own voice.
Mr. Greenfield's performance was highly enjoyable and I look forward to future books he might read. Mrs. Hayden had great inflection but she had very little voice variation between characters. Far from bad though, I still enjoyed her reading. She did mispronounce a few words that made me giggle. Chaste being the standout. But she gave good emotion and energy, so 3.5 stars at least. :)
The story was immersive and the world building well though out as I've come to expect from Mrs. Woods' works. The world is essentially ours just a little in the future but in which magic is an every day part of life and pretty much decides the hierarchy of the world. Zane being an Incubus was as much fun as I hoped. Don't get me wrong, he was definitely a dark and damaged character, but he was also thoroughly fleshed out and extremely captivating because of it. Ever was a similar level of broken in a different way that made them a perfect fit. They're journey to discovering that really made this book the romance it is.
The overarching story plot was not completed in this, of course, as we still have two sisters yet to get stories for. The idea of drugs and crime trying to change the world isn't new, but the spin on it in this is definitely a new take. I won't say more so I don't spoil anything, but suffice to say this is a crime drama/magical/romance story that also brings in family as a strong element. Also, know that it's definitely steamy and 18+.
This is a suspenseful adult paranormal- action-romance with both likable and horrible "monsters". All set in a universe much like our own with the addition of magic users, meaning there are both good and awful individuals in both the magical and mundane groups. There is still fear, jealousy, greed, corruption and so on, but there are also the honest, kind, loving and noble who still work toward making the world a better place. Magical talent doesn't solve all problems just as much as any mundane skill or knowledge can, so it is still a matter of personal character and their choices that makes a person who they are. Being magical or not just gives people more factors to cope with in various situations. It also adds to the possibility of danger (at times) in some circumstances. Some characters' talents have also made dating and family life that much harder as evidenced in some of the memories or flash-backs for the main characters. This isn't a shinny, fluffy "Small World". If that is what you are looking for, move on. Neither is it a dark gritty Apocalypse, but somewhere in between. It's a world filled with possibilities, opportunities, and risks. Just like our own world is. Our characters are written strong enough to find happiness where they can. Are we readers brave enough to do the same? Can we turn our mistakes into the tough lessons they were and choose or act better next time, or will we let failure rule us, never to rise above it? That is my take-away. Maybe you'll get something else out of it.

Zane Walker is an incubus and works for the FBI as an agent. He is currently working undercover in a deadly drug cartel trying to work out the source of the enhancers that they are peddling. The a beautiful with storms in making demands that she thinks she can back up with magic forcing him to make a split decision to save her life. Billionaire witch and scientist Ever Strange discovered that her father was murdered and not the overdose that it was made to appear (Asher Strange was a world-renowned med-magick researcher and would never take drugs like that). Before she can get an autopsy his body has disappeared so she is determined to get some answers. Someone’s putting deadly magick into street drugs which are killing people all over the city. Where Zane’s magick is monstrous, Ever’s power brings out his beast. But when she insists on finding her father keeping her safe has suddenly become his job (obsession) which is on top of stopping an epidemic of overdoses that just might be cover for a serial killer. Together, they work to stop the dark magick that’s stalking the streets of Chicago but can they keep their own secrets from consuming them both?
I loved this story which had a great mixture of a mystery and a romance as they struggled with and then gave in to the undeniable attraction between them both. Thankfully they had dangerous powers but they actually appeared to cancel the danger out when they were together. Well written and easy to read - I was addicted to the story and could not put it down. Contains some sexual content.
I really enjoyed this book and is the first I have read from this author, but won't be the last.
Ever Strange is a high society Level 1 mage with powers she is too scared to use to their full extent. Zane Walker is an undercover FBI agent and incubus with very strong, highly dangerous, highly illegal magic. He is an a mission to uproot a treacherous drug cartel and Ever is on a mission to find her "dead" father after his body goes missing from the morgue after a supposed drug overdose. When Ever stumbles into a meeting between Zane's drug cartel boss and the boss of another cartel, Zane has to stop her from being killed the only way he knows how - by using his mental incubus powers.
He takes her away from the situation under the guise that he is going to use and abuse her, but really he is trying to save her life. Once she realises he won't hurt her, at least not physically and not mentally again, they begin to work together to find the answers they are both looking for. Along the way they also find something else they didn't realise they were looking for too!
I loved the characters in this book - Ever was strong, powerful with her magic, determined, yet still had a vulnerable side that she didn't want to share with anyone. Zane was gorgeous and scared of his powers in his own way too, but accepted they were part of who he was - he was definitely not going to let them control him!
Looking forward to reading the rest of this series and meeting Ever's other sisters!
Ever Strange is a fun read written by Alisa Woods. I didn't know what to expect from this book really and just kind of stumbled across this book and was rather pleasantly surprised by this book. The author came up with a rather interesting concept that was different from most magic books I have read to date. She comes up with an imaginative world where magic is common and people without magic are just the ones with the short end of the stick, but will it stay that way?
Meet the Strange family, or Ever Strange. She is not your usual heroine and she is rather interesting. I enjoy getting to know her and the author does a great job letting you into the world of Ever. Ever sure makes a lot of bad choices and I often wonder "really?" but I do get it because she is driven by the fear for her father.
Zane is not your usual hero either. He is strong and masculine but he has a lot of inner demons that he is fighting the entire time. He too makes some decisions that make you wonder but I also think some of these are in order to make the book work.
There was a part where I was like "duh, I saw that coming" but the author actually had a great way of resolving it and making it less of a I can't believe she did that kind fo moment. She actually resolved it to make it more realistic and not like a stupid move, so I really enjoyed that aspect about it. Now I really want to read the other two books to find out what happens to her sisters and see who the evil "genius" behind all of this story is.
So, you’ve read all of Alisa’s books! You know exactly what to expect? Well, this story is a different tale altogether. Imagine a world where High Magick exists. It’s built into your genome if you’re lucky. If you aren’t then you are a simple! The dregs of society! And who wants to be a nothing? Ever is the rich daughter of a medical tycoon who refuses to believe that her missing father is dead! She tracks him through a drug trail, after all the empire that he built and she now runs, is the foremost medical research laboratory in the country. Zane is a succubus. His problem is that, if he starts to drain anyone of their magic, they end up dead and he ends up drunk with magic and unable to operate. Because he caused a death when he was young he worked hard to control his power and joined the FBI’s Criminal Magick Department. He is presently working undercover with the top crime syndicate in the city controlled by Pennies. Pennies is a simple and doesn’t want to stay that way. He only has one rival who he has arranged to meet to discuss a merger. It is this meeting that Ever stumbles into. Zane realises that her life is now in danger and decides to help her. The story becomes more and more complex and interesting as it goes on. Zane and Ever have an attraction to each other although it looks like their worlds are too different. Very well written Alisa.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I re-organised my shelves and managed to delete some favourite books, so this is a re-add. It's too hot to figure out a more detailed review, sorry!
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Yet another wild and wicked ride from Alisa Woods, this tale will have you questioning the world as we know it. Ms. Woods certainly has an imagination beyond any limits I have known, and she puts it to excellent use in this "off the wall" tale of the paranormal with a delectable twist. She has given us Ever and Zane, two characters who couldn't have been any more polar opposites, yet for some reason, they click. On a mission that nobody else would even consider, Ever is out to find her fathers' body. What she does find will not only throw her through a loop or two, but knock her off her feet while he's at it. Zane, on an undercover mission, could never in his lifetime, which was forever, have predicted he'd meet the one and only who could tame his beast. But when it came to either blowing his cover, or saving the woman, he would have to think quick on his feet or everything just might blow up in his face...literally. An awesome start to what promises to be another excellent series from this very talented author. I received a copy of this book and am giving my honest opinion
Interesting and entertaining! The narrators do a good job, and I liked that there was a male and a female narrator. This story felt unique to me, and I enjoyed the premise. Zane is an incubus that works for the FBI, he is currently working undercover to gather evidence to catch a bad guy named Pennies. There's some bad drugs killing people and it's looking like there may be a serial killer on the loose too, so Zane's job is about to get much harder; especially when Ever Strange gets caught up in the mess. Ever's father supposedly died from the bad drug and his body has gone missing from the morgue, so she's out to find out what the heck is going on. She ends up in a very dangerous situation. I'm not a huge fan of the incubus angle because I don't like the whole sex magic scenario. Also, I didn't like the sex worker talk, but luckily the story didn't go too much into that. I loved the action and how the story unfolds; it made for a fun read. The story feels a little on the gritty side, which I liked. There is some romance, but I would've liked for there to be a bit more in the end. Overall, very enjoyable read! Looking forward to more!
This is something new in the way of Alisa's stories and at first I wasn't sure what would be happening here.. but I liked it. Ever and Zane being tossed together out of sheer necessity starts us off on a train wreck of ins and outs. These two, I swear they are like danger magnets. Though that seems to work in their favor.
Ever is one of those women that stands on her own two feet and doesn't back down. So when her fathers body disappears from the Morgue, she's on a mission to find out how and why. She will face off with the biggest jerk in town, putting herself into danger without ever knowing it.
Zane, a man of many coats is undercover, working a case that will either make or break the bad guys. Undercover usually isn't that big of a job but for Zane, he has a unique set of skills that are put to use. Skills that Ever happens to walk right into.
Now the two of them pair up to take on the bad guys and stop a killing spree, all while staying alive. This is coming harder and harder when every corner they turn lends them into the lions mouth, so to speak.
I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book!
Ok, I admit I wasn’t sure about this book but after I read the blurb, I found myself one clicking the preorder. I like Alisa and her paranormal books generally but as I said uncertain about this one. Well I should have known better.......as it was awesome 😎
Ever’s father supposedly OD’s and then his body disappears....poof. She is now trying to find out where his body has gone, so that she can prove his demise wasn’t because of drugs. When she unfortunately stumbles across a drug cartel’s meeting....oops😇
Zane is an undercover FBI agent and when Ever shows up unexpectedly, rather than getting the evidence he needs to shut down the operations of this drug cartel, he decides to save her life instead. Through this meeting Ever and Zane strike up an unusual relationship with heaps of chemistry and sparks of Magick❣️
A not to be missed first book in this series and I look forward to Mercy’s story next...hopefully with Arrow?
Curious-er and Curious-er! A Wonderful Suspenseful, Dark, Romance.
I’ve read several Series by Ms Alisa Woods and have always enjoyed the stories/worlds she’s created. This is definitely a darker series than I’ve read from her in the past. Although the h and H (Ever and Zane) reach their HEA in this book, it does end in a cliffhanger in as much as there’s more to the larger Series Story then was handled in Book 1. I look forward to reading the complete series to found out the rest of the “Legal Magick” story. Three things I’d like to point out: 1. I have to say that the lead up to the explanation of Zane’s magick was masterful. I had no idea what was coming! 2. Her reference to “Witchipedia” made me LOL!! 3. Finally, I sure hope to see more of Ever’s cat, Salem, in the rest of the series, she was hilarious!
I received and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this marvelous, paranormal mystery romance & it is an excellent start to the new series. The story-line and plot is intriguing, well-thought out and written, it makes the reader wait with great anticipation for the next book in the series. The characters have complex personalities that occasionally results in verbal confrontation but at other times they entwine fairly well with each other. There is: a high-level witch searching for the truth (Ever), a undercover agent & succubus (Zane), FBI criminal Magick Department, crime syndicates, twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, danger, enemies, violence, conflict, threats, secrets, deadly magic street drugs, undercover assignment, wild magic, a special feline/cat, verbal conflict, deceit, betrayal, spells, devious plans, manipulations, conflict, explanations & some steam.
