Oddly, the beginning is much better than the latter articles, in my opinion, though the book focuses almost exclusively on the british music industry, which is a bit of a downside. Also, what a poor title.

I cannot imagine writing a book in 1988 and stating with a straight face that "the rock era is over." There are some occasional gems in here ("record buying is my only cure for depression" and "John Lennon didn't have such a great youth. For as start he lived in Liverpool") but is overall just wrong about its thesis. "Media Culture" by Douglas Kellner does a better job of synthesising a critical account of media with subcultural analysis imo.
