Daphne's Ghost

Daphne's Ghost is a light-hearted, romantic tale that centres on the ghost of the famous author, Daphne du Maurier. It is set primarily, as you might expect, in the depths of the Cornish countryside and abounds with amusing situations and quirky characters, especially so that of Daphne's ghost. Although her ghost is central to the story, this is not in anyway a ghost story in the true sense of the word. For a start, it is more comical than scary, as Daphne's very un-ghost-like spirit likes to engage incarnate humans in witty conversation, play footsy under the dinning table and enjoy a glass of champagne, or two, whilst smoking a cigarette.
The story begins with London writer and gourmet cook, Selby, who has recently settled in Cornwall. Following a hilarious incident, which results in Selby meeting not only Cornwall's most eligible bachelor, Simon Rashleigh, the quiet and unassuming present-day owner of 'Menabilly,' but also a host of other colourful local characters - living and dead.
This engaging and well-written book is highly entertaining with a plot that flows along at a cracking pace. Daphne's Ghost is a book that any Du Maurier fans will be sure to love.

September 26, 2019Our local bookshop, Bookends of Fowey, had this book in the window this summer and I bought it looking for something to read over the summer. I devoured it in one go and so had to go back and buy another if her books. Sadly this is apparently DL Baylis' first book, so I didn't buy another book. I reread this one cause I couldn't get the characters out of my mind and wanted to spend more time with them. What fun I had the second time around as I already knew the story and could pick up details I hadn't noticed the first time around.
The story is about the ghost of Daphne du Maurier returning to her old house Menabilly. I won't spoil the story but she has a problem and needs help from the living. It's a love story as well as an adventure with twists and turns and also a bit of a mystery. I liked the foody bits too as one of the characters likes to cook. A splendid read for anyone who loves Cornwall and Daphne du Maurier.

This is a cracking read. Impossible to put down, it is at once funny and poignant - bringing together the indomitable (but not frightening) ghost of Daphne DuMaurier with a contemporary and affecting love story. Set in Cornwall, the writer has an uncanny ability to evoke a sense of place, with great love and tenderness.
The story concerns a writer who has escaped a rough love affair and London life to settle near the peaceful town of Fowey. Her past in is interwoven - best explained by her fantastic cooking skills of delightful Italian recipes.
The book deals with food, love, jealousy, ghosts, writers and ultimately the power of a remarkable writer (Daphne) to come back from the past and change the present.
I cannot recommend it more highly.

I was given this book by my mother this summer and I couldn't put it down. For anyone who loves a good story with a fast pace, this book fits the bill. The Ghost of Daphne du Maurier comes back to haunt her old house so she can finish something she left undone. She first meets the present inhabitant when he's seven years old right after the death of his mother. Daphne becomes a kind of mother to him through the years. As a grown man though it's not always convenient to have a Ghost hovering around and the two have a real barney when she interferes in his life. It's also a love story between two writers. Local Cornish characters add colour and humour and I have to say I was sorry when the books ended. A really good read!

Not really my kind of book but I can see the attraction for a writer to conjure up the ghost of a famous writer like Daphne Du Maurier. The story gives an insight into the life of Daphne and the vehicle in which it is portrayed . . a love story . . is pleasant enough. I really liked the idea of unpublished scripts containing ideas for numerous stories not published in Daphne’s lifetime then being written by someone else! What a find! On the whole I thought it was a very imaginative book and rather different to the usual ‘ghost’ story.

Loved this! A heartwarming ghost romance, amusing, and a real page turner. Set at her old home Menabilly in beautiful Cornwall the story centres on the ghost of Daphne du Maurier who calls on two writers Selby and Simon to help her finish the novel she began writing before she died. To achieve her goal, she encourages a romance between them. When a femme fatale appears on the scene threatening to disrupt her plans the mischief begins and danger follows. A charming and entertaining read. Leaves the reader wanting more.

Amazing book, very well written by the author.Definitely a must have book, it's heartwarming, entertaining, makes you smile, laugh while reading it and at the last part of the book I can't help myself to shed a tear...its absolutely touch my heart with the beautiful love story .Highly recommended.
