Fun Concept

This book has an interesting framework. Basically, a young boy texts to different historical figures, learning more about them and their cultures. Since kids are so tech savvy, they would probably like the idea of texting with someone from historical times. In this book, young Alex texts with Cleopatra. She even shares a picture of a statue of herself when Alex asks what she looks like. I thought the texting “voice” of both characters sounded a little too similar, and at times, the Cleopatra character sounded too much like an encyclopedia. It would have been more fun if it were truly conversational. I would love to see more photos or illustrations, either in a text or just on the surrounding pages. Page after page of text bubbles can look a little boring and not catch the eye.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Texting with Cleopatra is an appealing and easy to understand way for your child to meet some “living” history

Geography and history are more fun when talking to someone who lived them, and chat sessions are a familiar format for kids.

Get hooked on history and biography together with your kids
