Strange noises and eerie shadows are haunting Roxanne's Ruby Palace. The "ghost" turns out to be none other than the mean Princess Rudgrin, of the evil Darklings.
Jahnna N. Malcolm is the pen name for husband-and-wife team Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner. Together they've written four musicals, two movies, three CD-ROM games, and nearly one hundred books, including the popular series The Jewel Kingdom. They met in the theater and were married on the stage using Marlowe's famous love letter from "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" as their wedding vows.
Nothing exceptionally groundbreaking - just a fun story about Roxanne and her sisters confronting a villain who was staging a haunting. But the worldbuilding details have my head in a spin. This book is perfectly family-friendly as is, but some of the implications here have got me wondering about things that Jahnna and Malcolm wouldn't have been able to include. Rudgrin returns - she's becoming Roxanne's personal rival and a favorite character of mine - and it's said that her face is scarred. From what? From Bleak? From a battle? From Jemma and Regal themselves dealing out punishment? It's also pretty much confirmed that she is a full-on Darkling. Then there's the matter of the actual ghost, who is a child. Logically, I know the reason for this is that for a children's book, the main characters all being kids is a power fantasy, and I love that! But it also makes me wonder how this young girl died at such a tender age. I feel like Bleak has something to do with it, given that her family would have been in power either during or before his domination of the Jewel Kingdom. I love overanalyzing kids' book lore like this.
My big complaint is that the Red Mountains aren't explored as well as the other three biomes, and I get why - it's hard to know what to do with mountains. They did get a subterranean cavern system in there briefly, which is a must-have for a mountain biome. But I wanted to know more high-altitude rock-climbing sorts of details. Maybe in the next Ruby Princess book.
Glad we had a sister team-up, though. Always love seeing the interactions between various combos of the girls and how it strengthens their bond as a family!
This book is my FAVORITE featuring the Ruby Princess! A ghost is haunting Roxanne's castle and she sets herself on a mission to find it. Her sister Sabrina, (the Sapphire Princess) is afraid for safety and decides to help her solve the mystery. But the two of them end up discovering something much worse than a creepy haunting ghost...
The Jewel Kingdom series is a fantastic series, and each book stands very well on its own. I HIGHLY recommend them all to young girls.
This book is the best so far in the whole series. I was surprised to see the other princess' and the dragon turn away and run when Roxanne's castle was haunted. This book keeps you on your feet with its fast paced plot and exciting action. I also appreciated the exposition we get about the history of the Jewel Kingdom.
Roxemume's palace is haunted! A really bad and mean lord sent his servants to haunt her palace. When her other friends sees the ghost they freak out. Soon they were too scared to stand it any more.
