Nature artist Gordon Morrison has created a brilliantly illustrated and informative portrait of the American bald eagle. The main story is told with full-color pictures, taking the reader through the eagle's life cycle - the chicks hatch; are protected and fed by their parents; go through various plumage phases; learn to fly, fish, and hunt; and eventually leave the nest to begin their own families. On each spread, paralleling this main presentation, is a more in-depth and detailed look at the eagles' anatomy, behavior, and habitat. Readers of all ages are sure to gain a new understanding and respect for this majestic and powerful bird.
I gave this informational text five stars because it is just that well written. It contains so much info about eagles and would be perfect to use as a research text for a project.
Another beautifully illustrated nature book written for children. All mine enjoyed this very factual book and we have requested more of his work from the library!
This is one of those books that is better off left unjudged by its cover. With the beautiful type of artwork on its cover it slightly suggests to the reader who isn't paying attention that there may be a story about bald eagles in the following pages that one can read and enjoy before continuing to expand upon the subject if one is interested with other books. Instead the book is its own reference book instead of one that a child can read for educational entertainment.
Although the story is presented in a semi-fictional telling of a bald eagle family the reader is also left with a bunch of random facts. Although I love educational reading this just ended up in my opinion to make the book cluttered since you would be following the major plot of the story and then have to read all the extra nonfiction at the bottom of the page, which although providing you with more information wasn't the type of information to keep a very young child's attention span for long.
The artwork was beautiful and captured in the smallest details the bald eagle for the reader. Although there were also black-and-white sketches to the trivia that was found added to each page it didn't leave the reader distracted from the actual illustrations found within the book.
All in all this book as an informational resource is a really good book for children interested in the bald eagle and what it takes to be in their life throughout the stages of their life. Otherwise for the youngest of audiences you may either want to skip over the extra pieces of information or even better yet look for a book that is more directed in being educational yet fun and/or brief at the same time before moving onto this book.
