The Inheritance Clause #4

All's Fair in Love and Debauchery

Rate this book
The Templetons have inherited a fortune but there's a catch...

Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook, has the easiest of tasks. At least the rest of his family thinks so. Return to his entailed estate and remain there for two months. It should be simple…
But he has refused to set foot there since the death of his wife.
Theo will do what he must for his family. It’s just, well, he almost forgot his ward still resides there.
Lucy Jameson is all grown up. Very grown up. So much so that it is becoming distracting. Not only is she attractive but she’s determined to show him how much she’s been looking after his house. The indomitable Lucy can run a household with all the talent of a woman twice her age apparently.
Every moment around her is like torment—knowing he cannot, must not touch her.
These two months were going to be challenging enough and now they’ll be even harder knowing he’s attracted to his ward—a young woman who should definitely be off limits.

I enjoyed Theo and Lucy's story to a point. There was not much going on but I liked the banter between them as well as their internal musings that aptly showed what kind of people they were. It was romance on the sweeter side, and I would have loved it even more if the only intimate scene was either different or wasn't there at all. It was very unrealistic - sex with a virgin in a dirty pond... I honestly liked the book up to this point, but this particular scene has soured my enjoyment slightly. What made it better was the finale where all the siblings gathered together after completing their tasks and finally resolving their financial woes. Nice story except for the part where author's imagination ran wild for a second.

A good part of All's Fair in Love and Debauchery is the exact same as Novella's 1-3 of the Inheritance Clause. There are of course a few changes with characters and there storylines.

Theo Marquest of Eastbrook is the last of his siblings to complete his task of staying 2 months at Holbury Hall his families seat. His past marriage was and unhappy one. His deceased wife had problems which weren't full explained. Other then she had debauched friends and spent lots of money. She left the estate nearly broke before she died.

Theo gets reacquainted with his ward Lucy who is now 19 years old and they both are very attracted to each other. Which leads to a beautiful romance and HEA ending.

I really like that Lucy was 19 and not an on the shelf spinster. She was young and intelligent and beautiful. I wish more HR authors would write using a young women as there herione. It is more fitting for the era.

All's Fair in Love and Debauchery by Samantha Holt is book Four in The Inheritance Clause Series. This is the story of Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook and Lucy Jameson. I have read (and Loved) the other books, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Each family member has had to complete a task receive their inheritance. In this book Theo has to complete his task, which is to stay at Eastbrook Manor. Theo swore never to return to that manor. But he is in debit from his wife's spending before she died and not to mention his siblings wanting him to complete the task. But what he did forget was the ward he left there..Lucy. Lucy has taken the manor under control and worked as the mistress of the running of it and hopes to prove that.
This was a quick sweet romance...enjoyed it.

At last! Theo's story! The last of the Templeton siblings who has to carry out the terms of the will from his grandfather, or all of them lose their inheritance. It seems simple but really it seems Theo has not been doing his duty and taking responsibility for Eastbook Manor because of his bad experiences there. Now, he had to visit and stay for two months and host a ball as the will stated and that meant spending time with his young ward he had not seen in five years.
But therein lies the rub. Lucy is not a young girl anymore and has been managing the manor house and truly loves the home. She thinks he is coming to marry her off and she hopes he sees he needs her there. But Theo has a big surprise when he sees Lucy and realizes she is now a grown woman.
As they spend time together, he may decide he cannot let her marry anyone else!
A delightful novella that unfortunately ends this four book series that was so enjoyable! Samantha Holt always writes such entertaining stories that I have a hard time putting down until the end!

And so we meet the fourth and last of the Templeton siblings to complete his task to claim his inheritance. I had read the first three books, and I was not going to miss this one, which concludes the series, even though I don't particularly like ward-guardian tropes. It always feels a little icky to me, because of the imbalance of power, and it always seems somewhat a little incestuous. However, Theo hadn't seen Lucy in five years, so it wasn't so bad, and he doesn't come off as an old lecher. I did have a problem with it, but not the one I expected. It was Lucy Jameson's situation, the ward, that was problematic for me. Lucy is nineteen, she became a ward to Theo and his late wife Julia when Lucy was thirteen; Julia died one year later, and Theo left. Then from what I was told, and what I gathered, Lucy has been acting as second housekeeper, steward, and lady of the manor since she was fourteen. There are no mentions of governesses, companions, adult supervisors of any kind. That would be considered utter neglect, and the age of majority in 1818 was 21. Since this is a constant in the novella, it was impossible for me to overlook. She had a lady's maid, and that was it. It just didn't make sense.

The story was cute, but not exceptional; my favourite remains Seth's. For those who are wondering, the extent of the "debauchery" consists of one short sex scene. It happens at a suitable time, but not precisely at the proper place, in my opinion. The three previous installments can easily be read out of order, since the four books take place concurrently, apart from this one where the siblings reunite briefly. I might have liked a bit more of the reunion, but it was fine, given the fact that it is a short novella.

Bk #1 Angel, kisses only, the only sib w/o sexual encounters.
Bk #2 Seth
Bk #3 Minerva
Bk #4 Theo

Above is the Templeton siblings list. I disliked the couple
Theo & Lucy. She made assumptions, acted w/o thinking
& undermined Theo's authority. I did not expect her to
be a lemming, but she was too bold. Theo came across as
dour, too passive & emotionally repressed (except anger).
He still held anger against his late wife, Julia, who left him
in debt. Theo as victim lacked control over his finances,
before/ after her death?

Theo & Julia took in Lucy as their ward, at age 13. Now 19,
Lucy reflected on her crush on Theo of yrs ago. He neglected
Lucy and her changing needs over the yrs. (Theo lived else-
where). Theo was in his late 20's? For some reason this man
and his ward, as adults, felt pervy together.

My favorite novella by this author, remains Julia & the Duke
(Bluestocking Brides #2).

Revised.

Theo, the Marquess of Eastbrook, is drowning in both responsibility and the debt left over from his late wife's extravagances. He is counting on the inheritance from his late grandfather to keep the estate afloat, even if he has to split it with his three siblings. But in order to receive the money, each sibling must complete a specific task within two months.

Theo's task should be the simplest out of all of his siblings, but it's still daunting for him: he must spend two months at Eastbrook Manor. Theo has nothing but bad memories left at his childhood home and had all but forgotten the young ward he left behind there. Except Lucy Jameson isn't a girl anymore and Theo can't help but notice, as much as he tries not to.

Lucy had a bit of a crush on her guardian when she was younger, but she can see he's a different man now. She wants to get to know him again now that they're on the same level and show him how much she loves the manor house and how well she manages it so he will allow her to stay and not marry her off. But as the two spend more time together Theo can't think of marrying her off to anyone, except maybe himself.

This was another quick and enjoyable read for this delightful little series. I might've liked a bit more backstory about Theo's wife and how much she hurt him, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is romantic, amusing, sweet and entertaining. Theo is normally responsible, dependable and caring, but he has been neglecting his biggest responsibility, a ward he hasn't seen in 5 years. Lucy is strong, determined, outgoing and sweet. Left to her own devices she has slowly taken on the responsibility of running the manor, and she's not interested in ever leaving. As a child she'd had a crush on Theo, that changed when he came back. First she decided that he wasn't the man she remembered, then she fell in love. When Theo went back to the family seat, a place he hadn't been to since his wife died, the first thing he sees is an almost naked woman swimming in the pond. She gets out and he can't help looking at her, then he realizes who she is, and spends the next several weeks fighting the attraction. This book, as the others in the series, can be read alone, but is better when all are read in order because it builds up the suspense.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

I loved the prior Inheritance Clause books 1-3. This book is about the eldest Theo, the Marquess. The story unfortunately is quite predictable and lacked the enthusiasm that was in the previous books. This could also be looked at as an older man - younger woman story. In the book, Theo stated he was old enough to be Lucy's father. Lucy being just nineteen is still growing up into a mature woman. It was evident that she had far to go in the way she interacted with Theo. She is intelligent, dedicated, hardworking and could run the estate better than anyone. She just needed to mature emotionally. I am glad the Templeton siblings, Angel, Seth, Minerva and Theo all found their happily ever after. Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook, has to host a ball and be at the estate for two months and the problem is he stated he would not go there after the his wife Julia died. But you have to do what you have to do and his family needs him so he goes and totally forgot of his ward Lucy who is not the person he left behind, this Lucy is all grown up and he is having feelings for her that he should not since that is his ward and he is old enough to be her father. Lucy has always had a crush on Theo and it has just gotten worse. Will they give in to their feelings or let society win?

Grandfather Knows Best💞

Theo🐺🍆🌋 is the oldest of the four grandchildren who must all do their assigned task in order to inherit. He is the Marquis, and responsible for the fortunes💰 of the family and the title.

Unfortunately, his deceased wife had nearly bankrupted the family with gambling🃏 and lavish spending💰 before she died. Because of her, he hated his ancestral home in the country.
Theo🐺🍆🌋 has not returned home in five years, although he has left his ward, Lucy💃, there to grow up alone with only servants.
Grandfather's will demands he return there and live for two months to fulfill the terms of the will.

Lucy💃💋 is all grown up Now and Theo🐺🍆🌋 knows instantly he is in trouble! How can he be infatuated with his ward? It will be a scandal if it is found out!

ARC Received from Booksprout🌱
I also got The book with KU.

The angst factor is fairly low in this book and there aren't any kidnappings or criminals involved. I really enjoyed this quick adult Regency Romance💞.

I did like the characters of Theo and Lucy. Lucy has taken over the management of Theo’s house in his absence and just wants to stay there, as she loved the house. Theo wants to see her married and then he can leave a house with unhappy memories. However, the pace of the story was a little slow for me. I did like that all the siblings gathered together at the end. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Minus :
Theo's relation with the ward is akward to me i couldn't shake it off my mind

Plus:
The fire in the house was a surprising plot twist because i thought something would happen during the ball they organized

And the book was short and i like short books especially ones with little to no plot

Angel sneaked quietly into the room, hoping no one would notice how late she was as the lawyer shuffled through papers, looking nervous. Her deceased grandfather’s house would go to her mother – since grandfather had no sons. Then the reason for the lawyer’s sweating became clear. The grandchildren would inherit money but only if they fulfilled certain terms and within a period of two months. If they failed their tasks, the money would go to Mr. Hastings, a beast of a man who dishonored their cousin and ran off with a nursemaid! Everyone was outraged and felt he deserved absolutely nothing! It was a good incentive to complete the assigned tasks!

Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook, eldest of the siblings receives his task. He is to return home to Eastbrook Manor, a place of bad memories and pain, the family’s ancestral home which he has avoided for 5 years since his wife Julia’s death. He loathed the place, despite its beauty. He is required to stay for two months. At the completion of this time period, he is to plan and host a ball in celebration of a successful completion of all the tasks required of each member of the family. In truth, he hopes his inheritance will bring the estate back from the near financial ruin caused by his wife before her death.

He decided to walk through the woods to the estate while his driver went on ahead. He had totally forgotten about Miss Lucy Jameson, his ward who still resided there. As he came out of the woods, he saw her emerge from the pond in a white slip of fabric that was wet and plastered to her body. This would be a very long two months living here!

Lucy, like others in the household staff, had assumed Theo was there to marry her off. She loved her home and didn’t want to leave it, even with the promise of a husband and new home of her own. She wanted to impress Theo with her care and efficient running of the manor house. Her organizational skills are exemplary. But as the two spend more time together and get to know each other, Theo’s mind is not set on marrying Lucy off to anyone else as he begins to want a life with her for himself.

This is such a wonderful series! Each has started out full of pre-conceived notions that would be completely turned around as each person grew and matured within the experiences provided to them. It was such a joy seeing how each character handled their challenge. Join in the fun of this wonderful story and see the wisdom of their grandfather in the tasks he set before his grandchildren to put them on the right path in life. I will truly miss this series and hope perhaps the author will give us follow-up stories on how each family member is faring now.

This book is part of The Inheritance Clause series. I had already read Minerva's story, so I was familiar with the premise. This series does have an excellent concept, by the way. Their grandfather has died, and rather than will his heirs their money directly, he requires his grandchildren to perform a task to his lawyer’s satisfaction. These tasks are highly individual and meant to challenge the particular person. Clearly, the grandfather has known each grandchild well and wants each of them to find hidden strengths and talents. Theo, the hero of this book, appears to have the most straightforward task. He just needs to go back and stay at his country manor house, the seat of his marquessate. He hasn't been back since his wife's death; it is filled with too many bad memories.

Go back he goes, as he wants his inheritance to prop up his foundering estate and keep it out of the hands of a reviled relative. His ward, Lucy, who has lived on the estate this whole time, is no longer the young teenager he remembers; she is now a young woman. In his absence, she has gradually taken on the role of mistress of the house, not just handling household details but taking care of matters on the estate along with the steward, settling disputes among the tenants and the like. She is determined to stay in the house; not knowing any better, she fears he is there to marry her off. She loves his home and wants to stay there and remain in charge of it until he remarries.

The author did a fantastic job showing Lucy's motivations and fears. She has no clue that Theo now sees her as an attractive woman. He's trying to distance himself from her because he doesn't feel his attraction towards her appropriate, but she sees his actions as disapproval of her and what she has done for his home estate. She wants to do nothing more than impress him with all that she's done so that he'll let her stay. Her insecurities, especially because she is doing such an excellent job of running his estate, are endearing.

Will Theo accept his changed feelings towards his ward and let her know? Will they continue to grow as he comes to know her? How long will she fear being married off and sent away?

I enjoyed the previous book in this series and found this a delightful read as well. If you enjoy Regency romance, you might find this book--and the series--as delightful as I do.

I received a free copy of this book, but this did not affect my review.

Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook is head of the household and while listening to the will decreed by his grandfather along with his siblings is pretty much shocked. According to the will each person much complete a task to the lawyer’s satisfaction or their share of the inheritance shall be forfeit. Theo’s task is to return home to Eastbrook Manor. In and of itself the task is not hard but for Theo it is, for Theo has not been back since his wife died. When Theo goes back of course he is filled with dread and is unhappy to be there. Theo sees his ward Miss Lucy Jameson, swimming in the pond so the meeting was a little awkward. Lucy was left there at the Manor and has been running it pretty much all by herself with the help of the staff. Theo does not find the girl he left five years ago but a beautiful young woman instead. As Theo gets to know the alluring Lucy he can’t help his attraction to her despite him trying to avoid it and her. All Lucy wants to do is stay at Eastbrook; can Lucy convince Theo that she is needed there and manage to win his heart or will Theo send her away just so he can avoid love?
This is definitely a delightful story despite the sad beginning, the troubles the family has and what they must endure to keep the inheritance. Yes some of the tasks seem strange and maybe to understand fully the extent of everything it might be helpful to read the others in the series since this is the fourth book. There were also so many vague things especially since no one in the family really seemed to know about Lucy even though she has been living at Eastbrook since she was young. Even the lawyer didn’t know about her which seemed odd. Lucy was a strong cheerful independent heroine but she seemed too modern and didn’t seem to fit into the mold of a regency miss especially since she ran the entire household and everyone including the tenants listened to her. Sure she was likable to a fault and Theo was enamored of her even though he was much older than her. Of course Theo’s age was never really disclosed maybe to prevent some repellant ideas of the two being together. Plus his treatment of just dumping Lucy and never seeing her was off-putting to begin with anyway. Still the story is a short but enjoyable read!

ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE AND DEBAUCHERY is the fourth book in the Inheritance Clause series. They will need to be read in the order of release.

The four Templeton siblings will each inherit a fortune, but they must each complete a designated task assigned by their late grandfather. The old man must have been very shrewd indeed, because each of them have been given tasks that suitably force them to embrace their lives. Theo’s task should have been the easiest – go and spend the two months assigned for the tasks at the family estate and plan a ball to celebrate his siblings’ success when it is complete – except that he had all but forgotten about the ward he had left behind. Little Lucy isn’t so little anymore!

Lucy is soft. Lucy is sweet. Lucy is determined to continue living in Eastbrook Manor. She loves her home their and has done a remarkable job of managing it in Theo’s absence. She does not want to be married off. Even better would be to claim the Duke she crushed on as a youth.

I loved the more innocent and playful feel to this story. It fit the spirit of Lucy. The relaxed and warm tones were the perfect ending to this series.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via BookSprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

The four Templeton siblings' grandfather has died & they stand to inherit a fortune but there's a catch each has to complete a task.
Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook, the eldest sibling has the easiest of tasks. At least the rest of his family thinks so. All he has to do is return to his entailed estate and remain there for two months & then host a ball. It should be simple but he has refused to set foot there since the death of his wife Julia. Theo will do what he must for his family. It’s just, well, he almost forgot his ward still resides there. Lucy Jameson is all grown up. So much so that it is becoming distracting. The indomitable Lucy can run a household with all the talent of a woman twice her age.
The final story & just as delightful as the other stories. Theo has been the rock of the family striving to wade out of the debt his late wife Julia racked up. Angel, Minerva & Seth have tried to economise but Theo feels it’s his job to revive the family's fortune. Lucy always had a teenage crush on Theo but six years on her feelings haven't change just deepened. The pair are attracted to each other & whilst they know it’s inappropriate for a guardian & ward to fall in love some things are meant to be. I loved how they skirted round each other but couldn’t keep apart. An engrossing read that I read in a sitting, well portrayed characters & a well paced story all added to the enjoyment
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

The fourth story in the Templeton inheritance series is about Theo, the oldest sibling and the Marquis of Eastbrook. His task is to go home to Eastbrook Manor, the family’s ancestral home. He must stay two months and plan and host a ball at to celebrate the successful completion of all the tasks. It has been over five years, but Theo will go back and complete his task. He hopes his inheritance will bring the estate back from the near financial ruin his wife caused before she died.

When Theo arrives at Eastbrook, he must become reacquainted with his ward, Lucy Jameson who has grown up to be an intelligent, beautiful young woman. She is outgoing, friendly, and happy. She knows and loves the estate and the house and never wants to leave. She has taken good care of the house and estate in his absence. As they spend time together, Theo fights his growing attraction to her. Lucy loves him and wishes he felt the same about her.

Their two months is up. Did they complete their tasks? Will Theo host a celebration ball or a consolation party? Which, if any, of the siblings found love? This book, this entire series, is engaging and heartwarming. The characters are great, different, but with one trait in common, devotion to family. This story is well-paced and easy to read, full of adventure, humor, and romance. The epilogue is just right to bring the series to a close. I enjoyed Theo’s story (and the others) and recommend the book and the series.

Synopsis:

My Thoughts:

Not as exciting as the first three books.

I liked the whole series however this final book just seemed predictable.
I was not enamored by the characters and not at all surprised by them.
Books one and three were the best of this series.
This final book gets 3.5 of 5.0 stars from me.
Sorry guys but this could have been much better.

An entertaining series in which four siblings discover that their beloved Grandfather is far more devious than they could have anticipated. Leaving his grandchildren an inheritance with a proviso throws the four Templeton siblings into disarray when they discover the tasks their Grandfather has set before them. In targeting their weakest spot, it shows just how in tune he was with his grandchildren, and ultimately the outcome proves just how perceptive he was.

A huge burden sits on the shoulders of the Marquis of Eastbrook, with an impoverished estate caused by his late wife's wilful and reckless ways, and the care of his mother and siblings. Although he is aware that his brother and sisters take care not to drain him, it will still take years before he can declare solvency once again. The task set before him by his Grandfather will go a long way towards taking care of the deficit, but it means spending two months at the estate he vowed never to return to after his wife's death. Returning to his childhood home comes with mixed feelings, but discovering that his ward has grown into a beautiful young woman takes him completely by surprise. Aware of his responsibilities toward Lucy Jameson, Theo keeps his distance from her, only to discover that Lucy considers it her duty to ensure that he is well cared for. Despite the age gap, the feelings between them run deep, if only Theo can get over the hang-ups in his life.

I spent a wonderful afternoon reading this delightful book and enjoyed it just as much as the other 3 books in the series. In the first 3 books, we see Seth, Angel and Minerva doing their part in completing their tasks in order to get their part of the inheritance left my their grandfather. This time it's Theo's turn and his task is to return to his family's estate, Eastbrook Manor, and spend 2 months there. Easy peasy, right?

Theo hasn't been to the estate in 5 years because of bad memories of having spent time there with his late wife who practically depleted all his money. In fact, he had completely forgotten that he had left their ward, Lucy, behind! Lucy is now 19 years old and has become a woman, which he can't fail but notice!! She has practically been running the household in these last 5 years and never wants to leave it, she loves her home so much. She is worried that he has come back to marry her off and make her move away. She had a childhood crush on him years back but now that soon turns to love. They come together so sweetly and naturally, I thought it was quite beautiful.

This is the fourth book in the Inheritance Clause series but also works well as a standalone novel. (But you really should read the other three books too - they are fantastic!) This fourth book is another charming historical romance - this time involving the oldest sibling, Theo, the Marquis of Eastbrook. Once again the author has created a wonderful tale full of romance and hope, with two engaging characters I fell in love with immediately. Theo is a fine gentleman, steadfast and serious and a stickler for the rules, but being the Marquis leaves him with little or no time for frivolity. Lucy Jameson, his almost-forgotten ward, has grown into a beautiful, smart and intelligent woman, with a joy for life that is contagious. When fate throws them together after years apart, the sparks fly! Their journey is full of frustrations, misunderstandings, secret desire, a touch of humour and, of course, steamy romance. The author’s talented writing once again brings this era to life and takes us on another delightful romantic romp. Absolutely brilliant!

If you are able to read this book without using much thought, it's good. Unfortunately there are a lot of things that don't make sense. Like that the heroine swims in the pond in her shift. She doesn't seem to wear, or bring, clothes, towel, or a maid. Then there is the time the hero, from a distance, sees a fire and smoke coming from the manor window. He unhooks the carriage horses and rides bareback back to the manor. I'm not a horse person, but that is quite a stretch. When he gets to the manor all of the staff is outside, looking worried...even though they don't even notice the heroine is still inside. Good thing the hero got there and told the staff to fetch the sand buckets. After that we went upstairs, found our heroine, had a short chat, brought her downstairs then rallied the troops to start fighting the fire.
If none of that distracts, you should know that there are also some editing issues. I will admit that my grammar is not as good as it could be, but several times incorrect words were used. This is not the author's best work.

This completes Samantha Holts’ series on the Templeton siblings. Theo goes home to fulfill his love ask and comes upon a water nymph in the form of his forgotten ward Lucy. She he has grown into a woman he is attracted to and he doesn’t know what to do with that. Once again the author has done a great job of taking readers on a light hearted and fun journey with her story. Lucy and Theo dance around each other until they can no longer resist the feelings they have to each other. She also then brings all the siblings together to tie up all the loose ends and remind the readers of what each task was and how it was accomplished. Well done!

This was good ending book to the series and it wrapped up all loose ends that finalized the Grandfather's requirements in his will. I have enjoyed all of the siblings in the previous books and Theo, Marquis of Eastbrook did not disappoint me in the final book. He was a good and honorable man and was the only sibling who kept his task a secret; which was part of the terms of the will. He is tasked with returning to his country estate, which he hasn't been back to since his wife's excessive spending and then her death. Lucy is 19 yrs old, Theo's ward that came to him when she was 13 yrs. old, and has stayed at the estate running it for the last 5 years. I loved both of the characters but was a little disappointed in the age difference. I highly recommend this book and series!

This is the fourth book in The Inheritance Clause series and Theo's story. As we learned in the first three books Grandfather has passed and left some stipulations in his will. If each of the grandchildren want to get their inheritance they must complete a mission. Theo's requirement is that he has to face his past and return to the estate he shared with his deceased wife. When he is at the estate he finds Lucy. Lucy was a child the last time Theo was there and now she is a woman and has been running everything at the estate. You definitely have to read the whole series to get the full effect of Grandpa's will. I really liked the concept of the story and this book is a great conclusion to the series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
