I thought Esther, Ruth And Jennifer would be an OK thriller - fast but shallow fun, with plenty of tough-guy heroics and dialogue. But actually it's much more than that. Jack Davies has fashioned a thoroughly engaging, densely-poltted siege story (the hijacking of a huge North Sea oil rig, in fact). But the best aspect of the book is the super characterisation. In particular, the character of Rufus Excalibur ffolkes is brilliantly done - his courage, his eccentricities, his no-nonsense approach to the job, and so on, all imprint themselves on the reader's brain. The villains are well-developed too. There are a couple of points where the story sags very slightly, but on the whole I was pleasantly surprised by the book and found it a very enjoyable read.
This is a wonderful adventure written by a talented storyteller. For those who are movie fans, this book was made into the motion picture "ffolkes" starring Roger Moore and Anthony Perkins. Well worth reading!
3.5, rounded up. the novel on which the film "ffolkes" (or "north sea hijack" or "assault force," depending on where and when you've seen it) was based. since the author also wrote the screenplay, both works parallel nicely. the book reads like an expanded version of the film, fleshing out backstories and adding details.
