On the surface, Toriko looks like your average shonen manga along the lines of One Piece—right down to the stupidly confident, overpowered hero with a bottomless stomach. But it's that last feature that matters the most, since Toriko focuses on the titular hero's quest to build the ultimate seven-course meal by (of course) fighting the most dangerous and delicious monsters on the planet. This first volume took a while to grow on me, but once I noticed how much Shimabukuro embraced the core concept—Toriko lives in a house made of candy, for crying out loud—I was completely on board.

Toriko obviously draws a lot of inspiration from One Piece: It's the same sort of freewheeling travelogue that's essentially just an excuse for the author to draw cool stuff. But the manga's focus on gourmet food definitely helps this story feel unique, and while Toriko may seem sort of flat in the beginning, we learn a little more about his code of ethics as this first volume wraps up. The art could be a bit better, as Shimabukuro's action scenes don't quite carry the weight that they should, but I really enjoyed this introduction to Toriko's world. Definitely looking forward to how the author explores it further.

This was a really fun first volume.

A bizarre manga classified as gourmet, featuring a world with gourmet hunters like our main charcater, Toriko. They scout and hunt the dangerous and rare ingredients for gourmet chefs and restaurants, for a price. That includes a lot of monster hunting and great adventures.

I loved the art, the adventure, the introduction of a big arc/goal that we'll seek through the series (Toriko building up his perfect menu), and the cast of characters ranging between the bizarre and funny and wholesome. I'm sad for the lack of female characters, but this is a shounen manga, so any females will probably appear later, and probably will be for eye-candy purposes. I'm waiting to be proven wrong.

Toriko is Goku if his quest was food and not power. My guy just wants to eat the rarest most delicious foods in the world and nothing can stop him. I really like his core quest, making a perfect full course meal up to his standards. It’s an easy read with funny characters. I’d say the unique imagination of this world with fantastic beasts and ridiculous food is the best part.

Toriko is a gourmet hunter. He hunts rare species to make in to gourmet meals. He is sent on a mission to hunt a garara gator with a gourmet chief. They kill the garara gator and end up eating all of it there because it was so good. Then they end up going on another adventure to got retrieve a special fruit for the same company. They had to fight so apes and the end up only bring a piece of the fruit with them because it was so big. Toriko was the offered a 5 course meal by the company and ate all of the food they had in stock. He even ended up getting a piece of the rare fruit. The book ended with Toriko going on a new adventure to retrieve a puffer whale.

Toriko is a courageous guy, but he sure is a glutton :'P

The types of food is interesting to see though.

And isn't his house great? It's practically the house from the nursery rhyme Hansel and Gretel! "D

This time, I read Toriko. This manga is typical battle manga. I like battle manga so I was looking forward to read it. However contrary to my expectation, it doesn’t make me excited. I don’t like taste of picture so much and I felt this manga is made for elementary or junior high school students. It was too young for me.

I think this should be read by people who like strange but interesting stories. I read this book and loved it it was so exciting I anted to read the next book and then the next.anyone could read this book but if you think cooking is interesting and fun like I do you'll think this is so interesting and you would have never imagined.i would read this over and over if there werernt over books after this because everything was exciting.

I was so in to he whole book he hardest part was to pick a favorite because it was between he ending and the beginning, at the beginning the two main charters meet which is so significant and funny match I thought it was so great to be able to hav them meet in the story. The ending finished the book and also lead the book to the next which I thought was great instead of cliff Ganges which I hate.If you like the part in the middle I would say all of it was interesting so he's middle couldn't be my favorite.
I would say the writing style of this author was great because I like how the end like I said befor because this author made the end interesting and able to stop and read but also able to put the book down after your done so you could read the next. The book had all these colorful charaters that I thought was great even the side charaters had a small story that as interesting . I hope to read the next book and write a review about it like this to praise it because I really like the style it was written.

This reads to me very much as a post-"One Piece" manga - Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro shares Eiichiro Oda's taste for grotesquerie, giant animals, and an overdriven action-led art style, and the two series have even crossed over. But Toriko's eponymous lead begins this story as an absurdly over-powered boss-level macho-man, with a deeply simple motivation: he wants to kill and eat the strongest beasts imaginable, in a world rammed with them. (This sheer excess of monsters also usefully dodges any conservationist concerns).

This set-up is played with joyful silliness - Toriko's main attack is a martial art that turns his hands into a knife and a fork, for instance. But it allows for more than just the very obvious beast-fightin' action setpieces. There's also tips on food preparation, sprinkles of science and chunks of animal psychology, all of which makes Toriko marginally smarter than it looks, and ultimately boosts its entertainment value a bit too.

-7.5/10
-The art style is STUNNING
-A mixture of hxh and food wars if I had to describe it
-The fights are poorly done and feel lackluster
-The food and atmosphere of the manga are really it's best asset
-I'll continue to read this however through my local library

What can I say? Dragon Ball Z with even more muscle and earthly superpowers. And actually has a meaningful underlying philosophy, though made cool with the gourmetization of all things.

Hilarious.
Toriko hunts dangerous food. He constantly eats food. His world is food.
His goal in life is to develop the perfect meal for himself.
The search begins.

Not going to lie, the entire reason I picked this up is because I’m a gigantic fan of Hunter x Hunter. They have gourmet hunters for a very brief time in that manga and I thought it would be interesting to see those kinds of characters more fleshed out. According to the internet the two series are not related but the gourmet hunters from both of the series might as well be the same thing.

The manga follows the main character with the same name as the series. He’s an interesting fellow but everything about his character is so exaggerated I find I have a hard time taking him seriously. He’s designed to be completely over the top on purpose I know but there is such a thing as being too over the top. Komatsu is an interesting “sidekick”. I’m looking forward to seeing how is story plays out. I’m also super interested in seeing more about Igo and the gourmet scene in the series. There has already been a lot of detail about it and I look forward to learning more about this company and how he gourmet world works.

I love the art in the book. It has an interesting style. The art for Toriko is ridiculous but I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to look ridiculous. And I love he different animals and plant types they came up with for the series. You can tell a good amount of thought has gone into them and the capture level system central to the gourmet hunting system. The highest level so far has been 10 but I looked it up and apparently the system goes all the way up to 100. Going to be interesting to see way stronger creatures later.

Overall I highly recommend this for all anime fans and fans of the genre it’s in. This is suitable for all ages in my opinion, even though it does have a little animal violence. Looking forward to the next volume.

Story 3,0/5
Zeichenstil 4,6/5
Charaktere 4,0/5
Gesamt 3,6/5

This is a long series, so I'll have to come back and update this review once I finish it up. So far, I'm really liking it!

The mangaka fully commits to the concept of a world where food is enjoyable to a degree that is just downright mystical. There are things said to be so delicious that one cannot blink, forgets to breathe, begin to endlessly drool, and make one's body cry out as if one's been reborn.

Toriko is one of the foremost 'go-to' guys when it comes to gathering these outrageously-scrumptious ingredients, which are often found in some of the most dangerous places or come from some of the scariest lifeforms imaginable. Every Gourmet Hunter in this universe is trying to build the menu of their dreams and Toriko is certainly no exception to that rule as, crossover anime special aside, the guy eats more food than Goku or Luffy could even dream of — the guy takes 15kg/33lb dumps, for crying out loud!

The jokes in this series have been great so far, but I've found there's a shocking depth laying beneath it all. This series is surprisingly philosophical at times and has excerpts like "clear fish breeds no fish" from renowned works... I didn't think I'd be contemplating much of any with a series like this, but I finally see why a character like this could be so loved while flying completely under the nose of most people outside of Japan.

I'm excited to read the rest.

Not good not terrible.

This manga is fun, but there's not much depth. It's also pretty crass. At one point a bartender's pants are sagging way below his butt because he pooped in them earlier and hasn't bothered to change. I like how Toriko uses knowledge of ecosystems to help him hunt though. The explanations are fun and interesting.

Very fun. Cliche shonen manga and got wordy at times. But really fun read. Awesome world building too, if you really want to read a story for its world, this is the one for you. Definitely one of my favorite fictional worlds. I’d love to go on these magical adventures.

Toriko, a demon gourmet hunter, goes after the rare Rainbow Fruit that is guarded by giant Troll Kongs.

The idea of this - Toriko is trying to figure out the dishes for his ultimate meal - is fun but it looks like it's more focused on battle after battle. I'm ok with not continuing in the series.
